I am of an age where I could not tell you how many psychiatrists I have seen over the years, I can only say that Dr. McKay is the best of the best. He is professional, compassionate, and perceptive. He makes me feel that I am intelligent enough to have insight into my condition, and that we are working together toward a solution -- which I have found is a very rare quality. I feel valued and respected by him. Dr. McKay suggested that I get ketamine injections for my depression, which has been persistent and not very responsive to medications. I am part way through my treatments, but I am already feeling noticeable improvement. The RNs and MAs are attentive and very knowledgeable here. They treat me like a queen, every time I see them. Personally; if I have done my research (and I have), then I have no fears or worries. But I can see how the kind and reassuring manner of the staff would be a great comfort to someone who is uneasy. I did a -lot- of research before trying ketamine. When I am at Roots Behavioral Health, I feel that I am among people who know what they are doing from the inside-out. They are very well-informed and do not hesitate to answer your questions with courtesy and thoughtfulness. I feel well taken care of and completely safe with them. In my brief time as a patient of Roots Behavioral Health, I have received the worst treatment I have ever experienced from any establishment, medical or otherwise, in my entire life. For context, I'm currently taking two common psychiatric medications (bupropion aka Wellbutrin and duloxetine aka Cymbalta). Both of these drugs are highly physically addictive and cause horrendous withdrawals if you stop taking them. In fact, Cymbalta's withdrawals in particular are so infamous that they even have a name: Cymbalta syndrome. We're talking shakes, chills, sweats, dizziness, tics, palpitations, diarrhea, puking... definitely not a state that's conducive to being happy or productive or even functional. This practice dropped me like a hot potato, with no warning and no recourse, while I was dependent on these incredibly addictive drugs. And this was just the cherry on top of a long list of rude, dismissive, and sometimes outright disdainful behavior from these people. To start with, communication with this practice is nearly non-existent. If you are the type of psych patient who needs to be able to communicate with your clinician, tough luck. During the short time I was seeing one of their clinicians, the practice could only communicate with patients through an incredibly janky portal program called Klara. Klara requires three-factor authentication (not a typo) every single time you log in. Its minimalist user interface is just a plain white void with no settings or options, so it's not like I had the ability to make it any easier to use. Due to the jankiness of Klara I ended up missing appointments with these folks three separate times - twice because Klara has some kind of final step to finalize my appointment that I somehow did not see, and once because their scheduling system straight-up deleted my appointment. Three times I logged on for my appointment and nobody showed up. To their credit, Roots has since switched to an easier-to-use portal software called Athena, but this isn't without its problems, either. Way back in September they sent out messages saying that they would stop using Klara on October 1st, 2024, and that all patients would have to make Athena accounts before then. I tried several times to set up an account but Athena kept throwing up error messages. I have other doctors who use Athena and I don't have the same problem accessing my accounts with them. When I sent a screenshot of the error messages to the Roots folks, they had no solutions other than to try using my phone instead of my laptop to access the portal (not an option since I have motor skills issues that make it very hard for me to type on a phone). They also confirmed that use of the Athena portal was mandatory in order for me to remain a patient. Since it looked like this was not going to be possible, I sent them several messages requesting help in finding another med management practice whose communication options were more accessible. Big mistake. Unbeknownst to me, Roots has something in their fine print that says they will automatically dismiss anyone who makes noise about looking for another doctor. Something about "ensuring continuity of care". Seems like dropping people without a backup plan is the opposite of continuity of care, but what do I know? I'm "crazy", after all. I don't have enough information to speculate on how this could possibly be legal, but evidently it is. My requests for help finding another practice went unanswered for weeks. Instead, one (1) business day before my next scheduled appointment with Roots, I woke up to a text that said I had been discharged from the practice and that no further communications from me would be answered. They did reply to my frantic messages on Klara enough to explain about the fine print that I had violated, but stopped replying after that. And that was it. Cut loose while dependent on two highly addictive meds, and no way to get more. So now, at nearly 40 years old, I'm having to worry about crapping my pants in public due to the combination of GI symptoms from my untreated anxiety and GI symptoms from medication withdrawals. I have since found another practitioner, but NOT with any help from Roots. Avoid these people if you can. Utterly psychopathic behavior from people who purport to be in the mental health business. Extremely disorganized intake process at Roots Behavioral Health. I received 20+ emails and texts about paperwork in 1.5 days across multiple portals for my intake resulting in somebody in the office telling me to arrive early to complete the intake; yet nothing was prepared when I arrived. I had to fill out multiple forms on the spot, and my assessment was cut to just 18 minutes despite paying full co-pay. Staff showed zero empathy, and promised follow-up never happened. While I received a refund, the response was vague. Overall, unprofessional, confusing, and stressful -- not the patient-centered care I expected. read more

I'd like to start by saying that my provider is great. The office staff however is difficult to work with. I've communicated clearly regarding insurance billing with the staff via their health portal multiple times, yet they are unable to correct their mistake. I had a telehealth visit on September 17, and found out about month later that it was not billed to my insurance. I reached out to the office about this and the staff lets me know this error is due to new consent forms needing to be signed. First problem is that I was not given these new consent forms until I inquired about this balance. They stated they would not bill insurance until these forms were signed. Second problem is that I switched insurance companies in October, so my previous coverage ended September 30. I assumed there would be confusion around my insurance so I provided this info to the staff on 2 separate occasions via their health portal, stating the coverage dates. I receive a message from one staff member confirming they understand my message and will bill the appropriate insurance company. The next message I receive from the office is that they will be canceling my (same day) appointment due to this outstanding balance. I advise them of the situation and they let me know that the appointment will stand while they take care of the billing issue. I've now received a message from a different staff member letting me know my previous insurance coverage ended and they cannot bill the appointment to them. Yes, this has been stated multiple times. The office needs to communicate this with the insurance company. TBD on the resolution here. I am not paying out of pocket for a visit for a mistake that the office staff made. This should be simple fix and frankly it's clear the office staff does not communicate. I've provided all of this information in writing, yet no one is on the same page. They are trying to put this billing issue on me when I am the one who reached out to their office to fix their problem. Be mindful that they only communicate through a portal so if you have an issue pop and actually need to talk to someone with a scheduling concern, good luck getting any help or even a call back. Instead you will be hit with 125 dollar no show fee and a manager that will argue with you and lacks empathy. In the portal you will wait very long most times to get a response as well. In addition, patient abandonment seems to be commonplace here with their operations. It's truly a shame, the doctors and Clinicians are great and helpful- the people that actually run the appointments and the front staff is respectful. read more

If you're looking for affordable Ketamine therapy, this is the only place you're likely to get it in Austin. I paid a $25 copay for each session, but it wasn't physician-assisted (I don't see how anyone could speak at all, much less coherently, on a ketamine trip anyway). Still, it beats the hundreds you'll pay out of pocket virtually anywhere else. As far as interactions with staff...I find the general vibe to be professional but strangely inconsistent when it comes to warmth/bedside manner. They really wanted me to take Abilify - downplaying its awful side-effects. I felt some pressure to do this, but I consider it Frankenstein medicine. Undeniably helpful for some, but overused. As others have pointed out, they can be ruthless when it comes to collecting late charges. read more

Had my appointment scheduled for at least 2 months and then when I show up a few days after the new year, they tell me that they no longer accept my insurance. They made me wait all this time, and then told me the day before my appointment via an app notification (didn't even give me the courtesy to call) that they no longer accept my insurance and I will have to pay full price. This is unacceptable. I should have been notified weeks in advance if they knew this was their plan to stop accepting my insurance. My prescriber is FANTASTIC! The Front Desk needs MAJOR adjustment. I do not text and so cannot use Klara and have to call in for appointments and refills. I leave messages and do not get calls returned or I see on my caller ID that someone has called me but they do not leave a message. I have taken to just showing up at the office after my morning walk to talk to the desk. It's unfortunate because the other care I receive has been wonderful. read more

Poor service. I went in for an intake and was given a prescription that I was told was going to go to my pharmacy. At the time, there was something wrong with their phone system. The prescription never went through at my pharmacy and I was unable to reach the clinic by phone and there is no way to contact clinicians through their new patient portal. I was unable to reach them and after a week I gave up and sought treatment elsewhere. Strongly do not recommend Roots. Place felt like a pill mill and had I been in actual mental health crisis this level of care could have been dangerous. (I had filled all but two forms out which took a total of one minute that I missed) Hung up on me when I was naturally upset. Treat patients like trash bullet dodged. But wait there's more!! Scarlet called the POLICE on me and falsely claimed I had threatened to harm myself to harass me. Making false claims to the police isn't just wrong it's illegal. Very unorganized. Multiple issues since I started seeing them a couple months ago. I'm beyond frustrated at this time. It's hard to work on your mental health when the office isn't giving their all. Will attempt with a new psychiatrist in the office and see if that helps. The front desk isn't great either. Always rude and don't seem to listen or know how to answer questions. The only thing I'm grateful at this time is their acceptance of insurance for ketamine treatments. I'll continue to use them at this time for this only. I first started going to Roots Behavioral Health back in 2019 and had varying results that kept me going through life at a decent pace. I had reached a point in my life where I felt that it was no longer necessary to see my Psychiatrist and decided to just trust myself to see my life through. Fast forward to the past 6-7 months I relapsed and needed help immediately. I decided to give Roots another try. My new Psychiatrist Sara Burgess is phenomenal. She doesn't just push medications or try just get me in and out of the door. She takes notice of the little details and makes you feel like a human rather than a number in her daily schedule. 5/5 for Lauren 1/5 for the new systems and attention to phone calls/attention from the front desk for the last 2 months/ the TWO new systems used to track meds and communication. I see Lauren Brooks (supervised by Dr Turnipseed) to supervise my adderall rx after my PCP did a terrible job helping me. I told my insurance I specifically wanted a BIPOC femme provider. Laurent does an amazing job with my care, always validating and trusting me, giving me great care and not requiring that I come in more often than is necessary. I private pay for care and the fees were $350 for my initial one hour intake and $150 per follow up visit. It's a lot, but it's a more than worth investment to get the right care for me. Trying to find a good psych clinic is arduous and time consuming, and usually near as expensive with insurance as it is with private pay. If you can, it's worth it to pay the full fee for someone who is out of network, but meets your needs. read more

My doctor is good. But I have to say, ever since the switch to klara as the communications means I'm disappointed in the services. I give credit for the great work by Dr. Lo but some of their policies are just not customer-centric enough. From doing virtual but putting arbitrary rules on it to length between visits they insist on. And then I mean in a world where I'm trying to stay away from being hooked to my phone, making Klara the main means of communication is simply not good. If I wasn't required to give at least one star there would be no rating at all. I have been a patient at Roots for a while. When I first became a patient at the practice everything was going smoothly until the problems started to set in. When you first sign your paperwork they tell you that you have 24 hours to cancel your appointment. Seeing that they said verbatim "24 HOURS" you'd think they'd stick to that policy. Well folks, don't hold your breath because they tack on fees then deflect it all on you as if you did something wrong. I travel a lot for work and sometimes have to cancel if my flights are delayed or if my trips get extended. I always made sure to cancel more than 24 hours in advance minimum. Well I go in for an appointment recently and the front desk workers check me in and proceed to notify me of an outstanding balance of over $500 in "No Show" fees. How in the god awful world do I have any sort of debt to this practice when I followed their rules? I had to speak with my PA immediately and their office manager to get this resolved. Before talking to the O.M.;the workers wouldn't even try to help me out with it. Now they have said to cancel within at least "48 HOURS" moving forward. Oddly enough, I still have the documented paperwork that says 24 hr cancellation notice. The turnover rate for PAs is extremely high here. In the last thirteen months I've had three different PAs. Two left without saying anything to their clients. I found out my previous PA was leaving while out of the country.... no phone call just a lousy automated email. The only upside to this practice is that they will listen to you when it comes to medication regulation journey. Other than that pass on this practice and go elsewhere. Find a practice that cares about their patients instead of taking your money for a 5-15 minute conversation with your PA then you're out the door. People without insurance take my advice to heart! I use to give Root behavioral 5 stars now it's a 1 star - I started seeing Dr Robert Turnipseed because my therapist recommended him. I started seeing Turnipseed before he open up root behavioral health. Since I moved from Massachusetts it took me a long time to find a psychiatrist that actually help get my anxiety better under control he was the first Psychiatrist that instead keeping me on the same medication I been in for years suggested to change my medication all over for the first time I. A long time my anxiety is a lot more under control and he is the first psychiatrist I have met in Texas that understood why I take Xanax on a as needed bases he didn't try to cut me off. However my rate is changing from 5 to a 1 because Just recently Dr. Turnipseed decided he is no longer seeing patient and he gave me the impression that it would be temporary pause on not seeing patients. So, he suggested to see a PA and I only said yes to seeing her because it was temporary. Come to find out he definitely no longer seeing patients. I travel from Taylor Tx to see Dr. Turnipseed and at one point my insurances no longer covered him so I paid out of pocket because that how much I liked working with him. I feel like he ditch his patients especially those who followed him before he moved to open roots behavioral health. Well after a few sessions with the PA he recommended I felt like theand express it to my therapist she recommended a different PA but in order to switch I was required to talk to the ression that this switch was temporary. Also I am really disappointed Dr. Turnipseed no longer seeing patients I feel like basically ditch he basically ditched his patient. I was a patient who drove all the way from Round Rock and now that I move I travel from Taylor tx to see him and at one point my insurance won't cover Turnipseed so I continued to see him because how great of a Psychiatrist he is. After having a few sessions with the PA that was recommended to me I decided just don't like her and she is not Dr. Turnipseed. So I spoke to my therapist about this and she recommended a different PA. In order to switch you have to talk to the manger and basically they discuss as a group if it's okay for me to switch. In the end they said no well It's not right don't let a patient make the decision to switch to a different Pa especially if you don't like the person or not connecting you should approve the patient request I think it's wrong that root behavioral won't approve a patients request. As of now i am no longer a patient and I will be looking for a new psychiatrist again. read more

Roots Behavioral is a great facility. The staff is so helpful, and communication through Klara is fast and easy. I met with Sarah Burgess who helped me so much. She is professional, but still warm and caring. Anyone thinking about seeking help should consider meeting with her ( and I'm sure the other associates are just as great). Since I met with her 3 months ago, I have already experienced so much improvement in every aspect of my life based on the diagnoses she gave me. Showed up and said because I didn't fill out the forms they cancelled my appointment which is not what they told me on the phone the DAY before. I waited a month for this appointment I have an extremely busy schedule and to waste time to show up when I talked to them the day before and CONFIRMEd is inexcusable. I'm shocked at the ratings Roots Behavioral Health is receiving here. They are by far the BEST at what they do in my opinion.... I have been Dr. Turnipseed's patient at Roots Behavioral Health for a number of years now and he's remarkable. I literally witnessed this office blow up in size & expand over time to something impressive. When I 1st started seeing Dr. Turnipseed he had a nice little office by Seton Main. Roots Behavioral Health was flourishing & in need of an office that they could continuously expand, so he moved to a very nice building on South IH-35 near Oltorf. I'm guessing it has been a few years at this location now & the office itself has developed so much. He's always investing in his business by adding staff, office space, & new procedures. He stays up-to-date with Mental Health & is often the 1st of his kind to offer new "cutting edge" treatments in the Austin area. His office was the 1st & possibly only to offer state-of-the-art Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) in the Austin area. He has added new staff in all areas of expertise. They've also added a 2nd location at Lost Creek. This is literally a one stop shop.. I prefer to stay with same Dr. so I've continued to see Dr. Turnipseed as my only provider. I messed up, I cancelled an appointment & forgot to reschedule so I was in need of a new one ASAP. Roots was able to get me on the schedule the next day with a Physician Assistant. I'm grateful for the last minute "add on" & looking forward to meeting more of his staff. I'd be lying if I said I don't have Anxiety about seeing someone else though... Well, I had the pleasure of meeting one of his Physician Assistants, Lauren Feierstein "LO" & I was impressed ‍...She was so welcoming & sympathetic, "a breath of fresh air".. It made for another enjoyable visit. I'm looking forward to visiting with "LO" again next month for a follow-up. I'm still not ready to give up my Doc that I've been with for so long, but it sure is nice to know his staff is as incredible as he is & I have the option to see LO if I wish..No ifs ands or buts about it, they've won me over & I'll be sticking with them... **I hope this review is helpful to many...Give Roots Behavioral Health a chance, you won't be disappointed.** read more

I have been going to Roots for almost two years. I will admit that contacting them via phone in the beginning could be difficult at times but once you are an established patient, things get easier and it is well worth all of the intake paperwork. Their messaging/chat system is also easy and I almost always receive a response same-day. Because of the nature of my treatment, throughout my time I have seen several different providers at Roots aside from my "main" provider, Melissa. I am confident in this medical group and would feel comfortable seeing anyone at Roots for assistance at this point. When working with Melissa, I feel like the solutions we come up with are shared solutions and not that I am just being tossed medications. Her insight is thoughtful, relevant, and she clearly has a wealth of experience and knowledge when we go over my issues and solutions. Aside from my normal psychiatry needs, I have also received ketamine assisted therapy through Roots. From my research and direct experience, Roots' approach appears to be unique in that KAP is provided under medical watch and you have immediate one-on-one a therapist during and after. I have been working with Corinne and the success we have had together has been life changing. Her approach is considerate and compassionate and I never feel judged. She creates a space that is comfortable and lets me know that I am heard while providing insight, perspective, and tools to take outside of our therapy sessions. The results I've had since working with Roots has been transformational and more impactful than any previous psychiatry and therapy experiences I've had throughout my life. Everything about Roots, aka Brent Turnipseed Inc, feels like a scam. For the last several weeks their phones have gone straight to a generic voicemail, when the number works. The patient portal of their website, where you can review what you are being charged, has been shut down and not replaced. When I did see the charges nothing looked correct - and I only received payment confirmation for one session, KAP sessions were held on a stack of matts sitting on the floor, quite unexpected and cheap considering the +$600 a week they charge. Money up front, no way to contact them, no way to check what you are being charged. Better off elsewhere. read more

I did not have a good experience with Annette in the medications department. She was very rude, and then sent me a letter dropping me as a patient without any explanation. I'm sure it was because I asked to speak to somebody above her to voice my concerns. The Klara app is useless to effectively communicate with the people in the office. Terrible organization. They don't call back, even to emergency calls. They did not call back my pharmacist or myself when in crisis. They do not care about their patients, or at least they most certainly did not care about me. I met Dr. Turnipseed once for about 10 minutes before one of his revolving PAs took over.
