Been going to Dr. Dale for over 10 years. After trying a few other docs around town with little success, he was the only one that came up with a proper diagnoses and treatment plan. He is happy to try multiple different and even lesser know treatment approaches until you get the results you're looking for. This man is brilliant. I could talk to him all day about non-therapy-session-related topics. E.g. peek the corner of his office for cryptocurrency mining rig. His knowledge of the esoteric details of medication allows him to find that perfect combination or brand or alternate approach. He has mentioned more alternative medications than any of my previous doctors; options I didn't come across in my research. I love doing my own research (which he supports) and as a result I occasionally, inadvertently challenge him with obscure pharmacological questions I read in a random science journal article -- but Dr. Dale is a walking textbook. Yes, he doesn't submit your insurance, but when you get to only needing quarterly med maintenance appointments, it's totally affordable. My normal BCBSTX gov marketplace discounted healthcare coverage still covers my medications, but I've also used the drug coupons conveniently included in the equally convenient auto-text you receive when Dr. Dale submits prescriptions to your pharmacy. (Also, I have noticed the "submit claim" button on my healthcare provider's website, who is constant improving their website UX -- all things considered it's possible using insurance is simple as paying my insurance bill? The money feels so well-spent I never think to investigate!) He builds you up. Somehow in a brief conversation -- that rarely feels medical in nature -- he identifies the one thing you need to hear that day and says it. Things you didn't even realize were stressing you. It's like he has intuition super powers. I seriously leave every appointment the happiest person on the planet. Comfortable and confident. Easy parking. He doesn't have a front desk person, which is nice in many ways, but I really appreciate not needing to repeat conversations about appointment times. Instead he sends you a calendar event invite reminder for your next appointment as you set it. Billing is automated. He responds to emails same or next day. The only times I've waited to see him were appointments I arrived early to. Quite an all-around efficient business he is running. I found him on Yelp after moving here from Los Angeles. Short on meds from the move, he saw me quickly without issue. I'm LGBTQ so it's always important for me to find someone who understands the culture. He has been nothing but unflinchingly welcoming. He worked with me in planning continued treatment while traveling Europe for work for over a year. When I had a boarder-line stalker ex post breakup, Dr. Dale even checked my ex's social media that month to make sure there were no bad signs. FWIW, I was being treated for depression and anxiety. Once that cleared up ASD1 and ADHD were identified to be the cause of my virtually life-long depression and occasionally social-phobia level anxiety. Today I know I have a healthy brain. I have experienced the triggers and easily moved on from them. I'm more creative and balanced. Since seeing Dr. Dale my sluggish life has started to transform, I snagged a dream job after years of interviews, I have become financially secure for the first time in my 34 years of life, better than I'd ever have imagined. I used to be a heavy drinker and today I don't even crave it when I'm around drinking. I am comfortable and no longer feel the *need* I used to feel in almost any social or public environment. When I do crave beer it is like someone turned off whatever that switch was that made me drink them so quickly and in college-life quantity. I usually forget forget I opened a beer halfway through! I am a 35 year old registered nurse that has been using my Primary Care Physicians to manage what they assumed was anxiety and ADHD for the last 15 years. I was prescribed a variety of different medications including Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Xanax and a variety of different ADHD medications. I loved all of my PCP's and feel they did their best to treat my psychiatric concerns, but I did not feel my symptoms were well managed. As an RN, I was called to help a short-staffed psychiatric unit for a few months here in the Austin area and was amazed at what I witnessed. I saw clients that were admitted who were severely unstable mentally. After being evaluated and treated with a thorough psychiatric consult, these same clients left my unit usually a week later functioning completely normal. Wow! I was truly impressed and decided it was time to pay a specialist to evaluate my own personal symptoms. I am an avid Yelper and only wanted the best. Dr Dale Hsieh has the highest rating on Yelp with the most reviews in his category, so I chose him. I mean, reputation is everything, right? My initial interview was over an hour of detailed psychiatric questions. Really? When would you ever get that with a PCP? He knew immediately that I was unfortunately misdiagnosed and therefore mismanaged over the years. Although disappointed that I was misdiagnosed in the past, I was relieved that my sense of wellbeing wasn't just a hopeless cause. My whole life, people have always mentioned how hyper I was, but I never felt hyper because I was always actually exhausted and felt like I couldn't stay on task...chasing coffee all day. I didn't FEEL hyper, but the world saw me as that. I only slept about 4-5 hours per night because I always felt like I had so much I needed to do. A list -that I was creating- that could never get done. I was frustrated, irritable, and it was getting worse over the years. It challenged relationships with my loved ones and was overwhelming to say the least. Dr Dale was very thorough and sincerely genuine. I felt like he really cared about me as a patient. It's a huge ego killer admitting your downfalls to another human being, but I felt like I could truly be forthcoming about all of my challenges without any judgement. He immediately recognized my symptoms as hypomania as part of bipolar disorder. No wonder I felt exhausted! As a nurse, I'm usually not worried about social stigmas of a medical diagnosis, but let's admit it- bipolar has a bad wrap! The official diagnosis of bipolar was actually more embarrassing than anything to officially admit to myself and my family, but I think deep down I already knew. I tend to be on the upper end (hypomanic) of the bipolar spectrum as opposed to the depressed side. My thoughts were always racing and rapidly cycling. I had a hard time focusing on my external environment because my thoughts were always going so fast, but alternatively was extremely productive. It was the rapid thought processing that made me hyperactive...NOT ADHD like my other doctors thought! No wonder Ritalin didn't help. Bipolars apparently love their hypomanic state and to be honest, when Dr Dale told me he was going to 'slow' me down I didn't want to be slowed. Nonetheless, I knew it was time to make myself experiment to see what it was like on the other side. We tried four different medications and now I'm sleeping 8 hours each night. I am calm, alert, without racing thoughts. I feel NORMAL, well-rested, content and overall well focused. If I miss my pills for over a day, my hypomania starts to kick back in a little and I can't believe I used to live in a state with such hyperactive thought processing. Although it was super productive, it is not worth the exhaustion I endured over the last 20 years (it started when I was 15). Thanks Dr Dale! I couldn't be more appreciative. read more

Doctor Dale is great at taking the time to explain things to me, he never talks down to me but he also never over-complicates. He truly tries to do the best he can and I feel a real kinship with him. I gave Dr. Hsieh 5 stars because I didn't want my review to lower his rating since this review is to give others some insight on the intake process rather than the quality of his services. Idk about others, but even though he is listed as one of the providers for my insurance, he doesn't take insurance. It's fine, I'm willing to pay cash for a good psychiatrist but then I was told he wasnt taking new patients and he has no waiting list, even though on his website it says nothing about that. In fact, his website is very welcoming towards new patients. And that was one of the reason's I e-mailed him. Was I too pushy trying to get an appt, idk, maybe. For the past few years I had been suffering from an escalating anxiety issue and what I thought was depression or bipolar ( from google research). My GP said I needed to see physiatrist, I felt it best to talk to someone who specialized in this sort of thing so I could be sure I was on the right treatment path.I asked around and many times Dr. Dales name was brought up. I think word of mouth is definitely the way to go, my friend gave me his email. This journey started in early 2011. I contacted Dr. Dale and made my appointment within that week, I told him my symptoms, (I'm sharing my true symptoms to help others that read this, because thats how amazing of a Dr. he is) anxiety, I was constantly keeping myself too busy with so many unproductive projects. I was having difficulty sleeping because when I saw him I was also diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and the pain was bothering me. The pain was also messing with my mental state. I felt awful having days that I couldn't physically do what others did. I have been seeing him for years for multiple things. Everything above and much more. I went to my first appt, and what I got was so much more. Dr. Dale is kind and attentive and is willing to take the time to explain a multitude of factors that could be contributing to an issue along with multiple routes of potential mitigation, rather than simply handing out prescriptions and sending you on your way. He really takes the time to give you tools to help you with everyday life. He listens, truly listens. He clarified at our initial interview he we wasn't the type of doctor that you see once or twice a year to "regulate" medications, but has an entirely more thorough approach that has actually lead to a few modifications to my treatment that have helped immensely. He doesn't waste your time at all, when I was at the point of spreading my appointments out longer, I felt that I was ready and he also let me know. I couldn't say enough that would express that it's clear that he cares not only about the health of his patients (from my experience), but about what he does in general. He always has something new to share about approaches, and clearly stays up-to-date with what's going on his field so he can remain as relevant as possible, unlike many doctors who find a rhythm that works for them and then simply follows that path with every patient (something I've experienced before). What I was looking for was someone to help me sort out why I was experiencing anxiety and what I got was someone who clearly cares about my well-being an is committed to finding the correct *current* treatment plan that can lead to a recovery -where the end goal (for me at least) is to eventually be anxiety free as well as drug free. Of all of the Psychiatrists I've seen in my 30-some odd year time of needing treatment, Dr Dale has made me feel the most comfortable, and the most dialed-in I have felt ever. First visit I ever had with him, he looked at the medications I was on, and how my symptoms persisted, and suggested two changes in my overall plan introducing very low side-effect support medication. To think that my insurance provider list almost prevented me from being a patient of Dr. Dale Hsieh is enough to make me crazy! Two weeks prior to my first session with Dr. Dale (as he prefers to be called), I took the first available appointment with a Psychiatrist covered by my plan. Having just moved back to Austin from Seattle, I needed to find a doctor quickly because medications I have taken for years are dangerous to stop taking without tapering off. With my medication running out I found myself at the Austin Psychiatric Alliance seeing APRN C. Watson. With three years of documented and successful treatment in Seattle for depression, anxiety, and ADHD I was blind-sided to hear the first words out of her mouth (literally, she didn't ask how I was doing or even make introductions first), "I see you are taking X,Y,Z and you are misdiagnosed and are actually bipolar. I will not be filling your anxiety medicine or your ADHD medicine. I do not *believe* in them." She didn't explain why, in her opinion, I was bipolar, and completely ignored all the work done by my Psychiatrist in Seattle. Needless to say I was desperate to find a doctor with social skills, intellect, and a modicum of regard for my psychiatric treatment history and efficacy. I left her office feeling hopeless, scared, and shamed. That's all it took to make me realize I should look out of network for a provider. After all, I only have one brain - I can afford to pay out of pocket to protect it. I left a voice-mail with Dr. Dale, and continued searching for an appointment anywhere. I am so very grateful that Dr. Dale called me back within 2 weeks, and squeezed me in to his schedule on short notice. My first session with Dr. Dale was a breath of fresh air and completely removed any insecurities I'd gained through my experience with RN Watson. He was friendly, funny, inquisitive, compassionate, and took the time to get to know me as a person. I'll never forget how funny it was for me to pronounce his last name in Mandarin (having lived abroad in Taiwan and studied Mandarin). He was quick to joke about me pronouncing it better than he could. Not only did he get to know me, but his sociable nature allowed me to get to know him too. He is humble and has a huge heart. He is invested in helping his patients overcome their psychiatric and even psychological problems. I think a wonderful one-word description for Dr. Dale is "human". During my first visit with him, I brought up my experience with RN Watson, but I could not think of her name at that time. He guessed who it was on his first try. He wasn't speaking ill of her, but in guessing correctly he did exhibit to me that: 1. he is plugged into the psychiatry scene in Austin 2. he listens to all of his patients, not just me 3. he approaches his work with a dichotomy of intellect and humility He even took out a pad of paper and appealed to the Electrical Engineer in me by drawing graphs of brain "activity" that could explain why RN Watson may have sought treatment for bipolar disorder. Indeed since September of 2013 Dr. Dale has been helping me systematically and slowly switch to medications that are often used in treating bipolar disorder. The results are better than expected. The difference was in his attitude, approach, and interest in working together to find an optimal solution for my unique brain chemistry. He did not vilify me or my current medications because he doesn't *believe* in them. He didn't vilify me or my medicine at all. He just wanted to help improve things if they were not working out or not helping with my depression as they once were. I am so grateful to Dr. Dale for his compassion, wisdom, and humility. He has shown me that there is a different approach to the doctor/patient relationship. He is an asset to the reputation and field of Psychiatry. I see a therapist as well, and Dr. Dale's acceptance, tolerance, and support of the cognitive behavioral model used in that therapy has been very encouraging and welcome. As an engineer I work long hours and some weekends. Dr. Dale is available for appointments in the evening and on Saturdays. I've never had an easier time scheduling appointments. I've had a few episodes transitioning my medication. Dr. Dale has promptly replied via email or phone to any concern I've had. He even took time to call me on his vacation to ensure we modified dosages properly, and to let me know why the episode likely occurred. One week later the new dose had me feeling normal. If you are in need of a psychiatrist I urge you to strongly consider Dr. Dale. It could be the best gift you ever give yourself. Your mind, body, and health will no doubt thank you. Dr. Dale will care about your mental health until your treatment allows you to. I recommend him without reservation. I needed to find a psychiatrist quick because I'm going to Asia soon and wanted to make sure I didn't have a major anxiety/panic attack that I'm prone to getting when I'm on vacation (especially on planes). I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Hsieh within one week and it was easy to get in contact with him. I like that his preferred communication method is through e-mail too. I was really nervous about going to a "crazy doctor," but he was really personable and easy to talk to. He seems to know a lot about anxiety disorders and even had pictures/graphs/charts to show me. I felt like he really understood my anxiety which made me feel a lot better. I specifically told him I didn't want to have to take medicine everyday (only when I have high anxiety) and he was really respectful of that. Dr. Hsieh is by far the most informed and caring doctor I have ever seen. Like other people who wrote reviews, I schedule my first appointment with him based on reviews I read online. From day 1, he demonstrated (and continues to demonstrate) his commitment to his patients but treats each of us as individuals, tailoring his care to my specific needs. I know a lot of people are hesitant to see a doctor who does not accept insurance, but he has actually saved me money over the years! He doesn't try to prescribe unnecessary drugs and believes patients should have a say in the direction of their treatment. If you do need medication, he looks at what has been shown to be the most effective and also what fits into your budget. He takes extra time to find the most affordable resources and does not nickle and dime you for every additional phone call or email. Dr. Hsieh knows how to listen and asks a lot of questions, which seems to be a rarity in any type of medicine these days. He is also eager to learn from his patients, and I appreciate his ability to establish trust and a true 2-way dialogue. He is definitely an expert in his field, and I am confident in his ability to help patients with varying diagnoses. I commend him for knowing when he can and cannot help me or anyone else. And when I need help from another medical professional, he is communicative and supportive in nurturing those relationships, too. I could go on and on about Dr. Hsieh. I've seen many psychiatrists over the years and Dr Dale is one of the best I've ever seen. I just saw him for my initial evaluation and I was very pleased.  We talked about a plan that included plenty of treatment options like medication, and other things like working out, meditation, and talk therapy. It was good to know I had so many options to help me get better. I just saw him recently and it was pretty easy to get an appointment. He couldn't schedule me for my first choice of appointment time bc he was out of town but I'm glad I waited to see him the following week. Just email him; he responds very quickly. Dr. Hsieh is the ultimate doctor to see. No other doctor is comparable. He is genuine, honest, kind, hilarious, clever, competent, etc! All the positive things a person can think of! My general physician recommended that I see a psychiatrist for my anxiety and attention issues. I researched psychiatrists in Austin and I found Dr. Hsieh. At first, I was a bit skeptical about seeing these kinds of doctors, but after I read the reviews from patients, I was encouraged to make an appointment. I am so thankful that I took that step because it changed my life. Dr. Hsieh has an immense amount of patience and will NOT prescribe anything that could potentially harm you. He listens and truly understands your background. He thinks about many different diagnosis instantly, and usually nails the diagnosis on your first visit. Avoid this guy at all costs! I saw Dr. Hsieh for several months for treatment of depression. At first, he was nice though he was constantly running late and I was made to wait lengthy times for scheduled appointments. He suddenly became very difficult. I had never been anything but nice and courteous to this doctor. I tried to reach him for two weeks because I was running low on medication. He finally contacted me to state that he was busy moving into a new house. Well, gee, sorry, but you still need to do your job. He stated he could see me on the following Tuesday at his office. This was on a Thursday. I later found out I had to work at that time and left him a message within 24 hours to this effect. I waited three days with no response. I then left a text message and a voice message indicating my confusion over his lack of response and that I was now completely out of my medication. I waited a week with no response. I finally became angry and left a message that I was no longer interested in working with him. Dr. Hsieh's behavior was not only cruel and discourteous, but also extremely unprofessional and unethical. It is considered possibly dangerous to just take someone off antidepressants. I was left with no alternative as I don't have medical insurance and couldn't afford another $250 to start up with another doctor. I felt so angry, hurt and confused as to why a medical professional would treat someone this way. I honestly never did anything to warrant this behavior. I had my first appointment with Dr. Hsieh today after being referred by another psychiatrist MD who isn't taking new patients currently. He immediately made me feel comfortable and was very in depth getting to know my history with ADD rather than just handing me a script. He also understood my financial limitations and worked out a payment schedule for the initial consultation, as well as suggesting a very affordable pharmacy to get RX fills. Dr. Dale is one of the most competent and caring medical professionals in Central Texas. I was lucky enough to find him through Yelp when I was wearing thin from debilitating anxiety that made it impossible to do anything without doing it with the utmost perfection. This wasted so much time, energy and made me a very difficult person to be around. I was short tempered, constantly exhausted even though I was sleeping 10-12 hours a night, and just a real pleasure to be around () The last 10 months we've been able to map out a plan that has quite literally changed my life and made me feel so normal without sacrificing my drive and work ethic. I didn't think I could have the best of both worlds, but I do. If you're reading these reviews (I read every single one before I worked up the courage to make an appointment) just do it. I was so nervous to admit I couldn't handle my emotions on my own, and I was so scared during my first appointment. But, within minutes of meeting Dr. Dale I was instantly put at ease. He is cool as hell and I loved hearing his stories from residency. Wonderful human being. Shows concern for all his patients and very detail oriented. Empathetic and kind, yet firm when you need to hear what you don't want to hear. Dr. Dale did for me in 2 days, what a dozen other doctors, rehab, 12-step meetings could not help me with over the last 10 years. I walked in with and had lived with extreme anxiety, bouts of depression and extreme ADHD symptoms. He offered a rock solid, proven approach.......... 30 days later my expectations have been exceeded and i have been given a quality of life I was not sure i would ever recover. My experience with my initial evaluation was far better than I expected, but exactly the approach and style all doctors, especially mental health professionals, should follow. He is an expert in his field, and most importantly there was no sense that he was an expert about me, he let me be the expert about me. He immediately recognized my concern and said he would help, which was an immediate relief. I was afraid of getting the type of doctor that is like bad tech support (insisting I need to restart my device and reading steps out of manuals). At no point did I feel like he used a rehearsed line he tells all his patients. He was empathetic, relaxed, everything from his casual clothes (which I noticed immediately and appreciated) to his demeanor, which was more like having a conversation with a friend. Once I sat down, and we start chatting, I felt more like I was in a room with a friend than speaking to a doctor in an office. Other than his books on his shelf, nothing else seemed like a strategically placed prop, even his degrees are off to the side and are kind of hard to read from where I sat, not directly behind him which might have conved his expertness/superiority (those two are often intertwined). He explained everything in detail and thoroughly. I immediately felt like he understood me. He was willing to explain details, reading me and engaging me on my level. I could tell he was actively working on building trust with me, which I appreciated greatly, too often I think medical professionals think trust should automatically be granted to them based on their achievements and title. I initially picked Dr. Dale because he responded promptly to an email about scheduling an appointment and he had really good feedback on yelp. I have to say, he has lived up to my expectations. A review or star rating doesn't do justice to how much Dr. Dale has helped me and improved my quality of life. After severely struggling with OCD for well over a decade, he was able to slowly taper me onto the right combination of medication to eliminate over 90+% of my symptoms. He routinely checks in on me. I don't feel medicated at all. And he was willing to work with my therapist to develop the best plan for me. I've never knew I could feel this good. Things are easier on my wife, I can be a better friend, and more successful at my career now that this burden has been lifted. I've been better for about 4-5 years now. read more

Dr. Hsieh fired me after one session. I don't think he is a quack, but take from that what you will. UPDATE: Downgrading from three to one stars. Based on my limited experience with Dr. Hsieh, I didn't feel it proper to offer my real opinion of him. However, since posting this review I've had people reach out via yelp, due to the fact that they had a bad experience with him and I had posted the only marginally negative review. Dr. Hsieh is a businessman, first and foremost. I've had bad experiences with in-network psychiatrists, as they can only give you so much time, and a lot of them seem to have had all their enthusiasm kicked out of them. I realize now that I should just keep looking. A year later, I am more familiar with the Austin medical community. If you have some minor anxiety issues, yes, Dr. Hsieh is perfectly capable of helping out. But so is your General Practitioner. Dr. Hsieh is nice when you are on the same page as him, and will drop you like a bad habit if you ask the wrong questions. This is not the guy you want to trust your mental health to, and I personally think that kind of attitude is highly unethical and potentially harmful. If your in-network doctor isn't cutting it, find another one. Talk to your GP, and see if he has any recommendations. My GP, who I trust, has said, "most psychiatrists in Austin I wouldn't send a dog I didn't like to". He was unfamiliar with Dr. Hsieh, so don't take that as a sleight against him. The most important thing in any doctor/patient relationship is trust. Once that trust has been breeched, progress is going to sputter to a halt. read more

I was afraid to go to a psychiatrist! I had been to one once before quite some time ago and they were quite dry. Dr. Dale was recommended to me by a friend and I started seeing him 2 years ago. He is a breath of fresh air. He spotted my issue right away (bi-polar) and slowly eased me into a drug protocol.
