We were so impressed we went back the next night after a comedy show for a late drinks where the vibe was even more awesome !! Her drinks looked and smelled as amazing as they tasted. The atmosphere is more quiet than other places in five points. If you're looking for the party scene, then this isn't the place for you. Right in the heart of 5points, with no name above the door or any identifying markers other than white string lights hanging in the window, sits Root Down bar. The bar is very open with bar seating and a few tables and a cute sitting section in the front. There is a patio out back with tables and chairs...so plenty of seating! Bathrooms are nice, big, and clean...WIN Bar tenders are friendly and can shake, muddle, and pour you a drink with a taste like no other. I have been here a couple times now, and always get the beer. However my friends are samplers and tried the shandies and champagne cocktail ....which I did sample myself, and wow! They are super light, refreshing, tasty, different, sweet, and gone! The bar is adequately stocked for making some craft cocktails, making the area smell so fresh and full of herbs. So I really wanted to like this place. Like truly, I have seen it when i've been waltzing around five points and it looks like a pretty cool place. So I went here on a date and honestly I found this place extremely overrated and un-flavorful. We didn't have problem with the customer service as some others are speaking off. We were immediately helped and drinks were quickly poured. I ordered a prosecco with wild flower essence. Honestly the wild flower add on sort of ruined my prosecco. It made it taste very syrup like and overly sweet for my taste. The best word I can use to describe this place is sort of cold. Immediately when I entered it looked spacious and is very white. It has 3 large projects playing sort of star trek lovers delight. The candles on the tables weren't lit and it wasn't a place that felt homey or cozy at all. I felt the large projections made it impossible to stay connected to the person I was visiting with because they were very bright and took up the whole wall. I peeked at the outdoor area and It was my favorite part. It was a bit chilly on he night we were there but I felt like if they had turned on the heat lamp they had out there and brightened it up I would have much preferred the outdoor scene better. So will I come back? Probably not. Didn't enjoy the atmostphere here enough. But I am glad I stopped by and checked it out. read more

I've been going to Root Down for a few years and not once did I ever experience the RUDEST SERVICE EVER until Last night ! I was trying to explain to the bartender how these customers skipped me because I had been patiently waiting to be served a drink . So I placed my order and this red head / gold hair BITCH slammed my drink on the counter to the point it splashed on me. Then she tried to brush me off as if I got my drink so I need to go.... So while explaining to her what had transpired, she just jumped straight to assuming I was arguing with her without listening to what I was trying to say so I asked for a manager and she LIED about them having one at the time. So I decided to end conversation with her and asked another bartender for his intake on what happened and asked him for a Manager, which he gladly went to get for me .... This BITCH decided to jump in our conversation and tell me that she wants to close my tab. Didn't have a problem with her doing it whatsoever. The manager handled the situation fairly and also got my drink . She was mad that I was still there and decided to talk about the entire situation with the guy at the door and even the rude ass customer that skipped me , like she cleared something . Girl PLEASE ! This isn't a place you'd normally find me but I had a friend in town and wanted to do something fun. This was my third time here. I love the space. They have an awesome outdoor seating area that's beautiful. When we were there, there was a dj. She was choosing really random songs but I guess it's Riverside. They had three tvs playing so it was cool but it was like tearing my emotions. Friends on one, chefs table on another, and a really passionate emotional movie in the middle. I could have swore the they had more cocktail drink options but I could only find the champagne infused with flavor ones. This bar has a more modern look to it. I'm not sure if I missed something but I was told by the bartender that they did not have Yeungling nor liquor so I settled for a fancy drink with a flower in it that was a little too sweet and overpriced. Mario kart was on the big screen which is pretty cool and there's a back patio which is perfect for a beautiful Florida evening. That was my first experience here. The decor and spaciousness of this bar is outstanding and super chic. This is a great place to hang out with friends, meet new people, bring a date to, or even have a drink on your own. Sometimes I'm in the mood for something light like a pilsener or something strong like a tasty IPA so I really dig the variety of beer they offer because I know they'll always have something I'll really like. If you're not feeling beer then make sure to try the No Comply or a Lavender champagne cocktail made with some gnarly, fresh and tasty ingredients. I and my wife were sitting at the bar almost 10 mins, waiting for a bar attender to come and take our order. And finally a bar attender came and asked if we have been helped by anyone. When we said no, instead of taking the order, she said this other bar attender will come and take care of us shortly. Come on...This other bar attender never came back and she the bar attender came back again and took our order after a long wait. At first glance, Root Down seemed a bit too trendy and posh for me. After a couple of recent happy hour visits, I regret not stopping by this bar for a drink sooner. During happy hour they have awesome sangria for $3 a glass ($4 with a champagne topper). Also, $1 off draft beers. I'm not a light weight, but a few glasses of sangria had me feeling alrightttt. The space itself is really great. Very open with a nice big patio out back. No dark floors or walls here either. The friendliness of the bartenders is a nice contribution to the atmosphere as well. Although as of right now they only serve beer and wines, they still have a list of cocktails that are made without liquor. Bonus--after asking the bartender what he was stirring in a big bucket he told me it was strawberry simple syrup. He then went on to explain that they make all their drink ingredients (minus the beer/wine) in house. Overall, Root Down may come off as a bit fancy pants but I highly suggest you give it a try, especially during one of their daily (yes DAILY) happy hours! read more

Root Down is an interesting place so far. A lot of people I know are already swearing by it and I don't know why, but it certainly has some good qualities. I think it has been open since October (maybe November) and only very recently did they have any sort of signage (and it's just a window display.) Not a huge deal but dark, mostly empty bars with no signs aren't really the most welcoming. Kind of reminds me of the gin bar in It's Always Sunny. Come to think of it, Root Down also serves drinks in strange containers so it makes sense. Anyway, I've only been once so far to grab a round while waiting for a Hawkers table. They have an interesting wine/beer cocktail list since there is no liquor license but I'm not huge on those. However, the bottle/tap list is awesome and nobody in my party had trouble finding something to drink. On top of that, the beer prices were really good. We sat inside which was strange - would have joined the outdoor patio I've heard so much about, but as mentioned we were just there for a quick beer. If you are really in to motorcycles/dirt bikes go on Monday, otherwise another day may be best haha. read more

I never would have entered this speakeasy had not Vine and Craft hosted their launch event here! I visit Five Points monthly and would pass this nondescript building usually thinking it is vacant until the evening time. The Vine and Craft launch event was held on the patio and the upgrade of burgundy cushions with tassels, candles,balloon Arc by SarahLatiff-Jones, and band made me fall in love with this establishment. The patio is the perfect setting as far as I'm concerned for small group gatherings it is intimate and just enough established seating for a nice grouping of friends. I will give kudos to the bartender who was excellent in mixing our drinks and having them ready in split second time and always with a cute smile. Vine and Craft hosted their event giving each attendee two free drink tickets that allowed me to enter back into the Speakeasy section just to check it out. Now that I know about Root Down I am more prone to visit and bring friends with me for a quiet inconspicuous evening hopefully on the patio with good Jacksonville weather. I came here on a weekday in the early evening, and there were more people here than I was expecting. The space was really open and clean. We took a seat at the bar and the bartender was already helping another patron, but acknowledged us. When she came to take our order, she was talkative, helpful and pleasant. We wanted some sangria, and we were trying to decide between red or white, she suggested a mix of the two with a champagne floater and it was magnificent. It was also inexpensive. All the other patrons were friendly and willing to be sociable with people other than those in their own groups, which I love in these settings. Great new Five Points bar. My friends and I really enjoy this bar. Their drinks are delicious. The fact that they have an element of mixology, but only serve beer and wine is very intuitive. The shandy and sangria drinks are off the chain, especially for the price. I can't speak for the food, as I haven't tried it. They do it simple, it's mostly hors d'oeuvres. The atmosphere is great too. Though the bar is very narrow, there is still a ton of space. Multiple projectors, one is dedicated to a Wii U for patrons to play while enjoying their drinks, another has oddball movies and documentaries on. There is also a dance area and DJ booth. I'm not big on electronic or dance music, but the DJs are often pretty talented. The patio is also gorgeous and I imagine will be even better when the weather warms up, as they have an unused bar area that's begging for attention. All in all, if you're looking for tasty drinks, breathing room, nice bartenders who often remember you from your previous visits, and a great atmosphere in Five Points, I recommend Root Down. read more

We tried to go to a nearby new popular bar but not being able to get close to the bar to order a beer, we stepped into Root Down for a quieter drink. We were really impressed by the open space, the lavender painted brick walls, the long bar, the outside patio and the friendly bartenders. The bar did not stay quiet for long as I think everyone else had the same idea. Fortunately another bartender came in and we were attended to quickly. I love trying new things and enjoy a server who can give me suggestions and knows a lot about the drinks they serve. With over 30 beers and 3 wines on tap, I was impressed. Our bartender suggested a shandy which is made with 90% beer of your choice, a lighter one for me, fresh lemon juice, fresh made rose petal simple syrup and fresh mint. This drink was so refreshing you could drink them all day long. Even my friends who claimed they did not really like a shandy agreed this was the most delicious shandy ever. Next time we are going out at Five Points for a drink, we will make Root Down our first choice. read more
