So you know those places you went to as a kid and hold a fond memory so no matter what they are awesome? The Root Beer Stand is one of those places for me. I am not talking about 5 star food here but its nostalgic to me and so many memories as a child that no matter what, it will always be great. When I was a kid you could go up there and get a root beer in this little mugs that were miniature versions of a beer mug, I always thought I was so cool drinking out of those. I don't think they have those anymore but seriously if they did I would order a small one just for the memory. I always order the chili dogs, which is not the top chili you'll ever get with dehydrated onions (if you want them) but again... I love it for the nostalgia. The buns are steams which I actually really love. They are not giant hot dogs so even for me it takes like two sections to down 2 hot dogs, but I am always in such a hurry to eat them. The Root Beer Stand is such a big part of Kalamazoo and Portage history that while in town (and it's not winter) you have to stop in. I know I'll be home in another month and I am for sure stopping in again to get a few chili dogs and a root beer float.

I grew up here in Portage/Kalamazoo and we went to A&W when there was a laundromat behind them. Or we would stop in there after swimming or playing hard at Milham Park... When I came back for a visit in 2009, and this was the first place I stopped, when I took my first bite I got flooded with so many wonderful emotions, so much so I wasn't so surprised when I felt tears, happy tears, rolling down my cheeks!

Never seen this place so packed but it's good!!! Worth the wait!!!!

A great stop for a snack. The best root beer, ever. Just a classic hot dog drive-in. I stop in every summer. Did I mention they have the best root beer, ever? They do!

This is a local treasure. Basic, cheap, dependable hot dogs and roof beer. Car hops, homemade chili sauce, grated onions are all just right!

To have her join our table and tell us all about her passion, process, and story of opening shop made me realize what a special find this place was. Authentic, classic Chicago dishes, bursting with flavor, and exceeding all expectations. She even gave us samples as she was talking us through the menu. We ordered a chili dog (10/10), pizza puff (10/10 and with classic Italian marinara), fries with cheese sauce (10/10 with a delicious homemade cheese), and the Chicago dog (10/10 and tasted just like one from the Windy City). Oh and also the Andes mint chocolate brownie!! It was so delicious that it got eaten before the photo! Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu! Definitely give them a try!

She makes everything herself and sources her ingredients from Chicago. If you are looking for authentic Chicago food, this is the place! Today, I ordered the Italian Beef with giardinera peppers, baptized. I personally love my sandwich soaked in the au jus. The beef is tender and thinly sliced, and perfectly seasoned. The au just is freaking amazingly delicious. I highly recommend coming here for all of your Chicago food cravings.
