Room and Board is second to none! This showroom was so helpful for us to visit in making our selections for our living room. We ended up purchasing a Metro custom sectional. Their website was really helpful for us to use in figuring out what pieces to put together for the length/size we wanted. The showroom was especially helpful for us to see the fabric options (we'd highly recommend this... colors in person can look very different from the website)! We almost ended up purchasing two recliner chairs from here as well, but ended up going with West Elm for those mostly because of price (we felt R&B's was excessive). read more

I visited the Room & Board Back Bay recently looking for a sofa but the experience was extremely disappointing. As a young single millennial, I walked around the store multiple times and sat in multiple sofas without being acknowledged or offered help by any of the staff. I even spent several minutes looking at the fabric selections without once acknowledged. It genuinely felt like I was being judged and ignored, as if the staff assumed I could not afford their prices based on my age. Don't judge a book by its cover, many millennials and Gen Z are upwardly mobile and will very soon replace Boomers and Gen X as the ones making big purchases driving the economy. What made it more frustrating is that after checking reviews online, I realized my experience is not unique. Many other customers mention feeling overlooked or frustrated with the lack of customer service in this store. It seems to be a recurring issue that staff are unwilling to engage with certain customers, which creates an unwelcoming atmosphere. For a furniture store selling pieces that can be thousands of dollars each, this is highly unacceptable service. If you are looking for a place where you will feel respected and welcomed regardless of who you are, this probably isn't the store for you. I left empty-handed and disappointed which is a shame because I did find many pieces I liked and would have strongly considered purchasing. I had an exceptional experience with Room and Board in Boston! From the minute I walked in the store and was greeted warmly by a young man, to working with Dawn to order my chair. Dawn couldn't have been nicer or more helpful and professional. I picked up my piece at the Billerica distribution center and that experience went very well also. The chair was wrapped in plastic and in perfect condition when I took a peak. The chair itself is just what I hoped for. I will definitely return to Room and Board! read more

Walked in to the Back Bay store to browse and consider purchasing a new office chair, small side tables and other furniture items for some newly renovated rooms in our house since I have an account after purchasing some furniture from the online store for which the delivery and set up were impeccable. Never have I been made to feel so unwelcome in a store!!! Avoided eye contact, and one of the employees grimaced in response to my smile and immediately avoided eye contact. Other potential customers walked in while I was there and were greeted with friendly hello's. Clearly the employees ' judge a book by its cover' and I didn't look like the kind of customer they could be bothered to acknowledge. A striking difference in attitude and customer service from the Design Within Reach store in Cambridge where I bought a beautiful chair last year. If I had known this is how they treat people who look like me I would never have purchased the bed and storage unit I purchased from them online a few months ago. Their loss!! Won't set foot in or shop in their store ever again!! Circle Furniture, Design Within Reach, Crate and Barrel etc -- all stores where I have been treated in a respectful fashion--- here I come with my hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of business! read more

This place has problems with service. I honestly think R&B headquarters needs to come in and re-train or even train the staff. The place is set up as a showroom spread over multiple floors. So if you're looking to buy a bed you have to wander four floors to find them. It wouldn't be as much of an issue if there was staff on hand; two floors of the four are unmanned. The gentleman, who seems like he may be the manager, filters/profiles who he decides to acknowledge and help, mostly middle-aged couples. I understand he's trying to preserve his time and energy, but he needs to realize 1. his assumptions are biased and he's filtering out actual buyers 2. he's a brand ambassador for the store, a high-end furniture store at that, and people deserve to be acknowledged. I rummaged through the fabric samples on my own 8 feet from this man, for a significant amount of time, who worked really hard not to make eye contact or acknowledge my existence. I received much better service at Crate & Barrel buying $12 plates. read more

Very expensive, but high quality furniture. I visited on a Saturday and the service was really great. The staff was available but not pushy and I liked that they had bottled water and bathrooms- huge plus on Newbury St. Almost everyone I talked to really knew the furniture, though there was one woman I talked to who needed to brush up on pet friendly fabrics (When I asked about cat friendly fabrics she didn't know so she took a fabric square and tested it out with her fingernails while I was trying not to laugh. Then she suggested I take some squares home and try to get my cats to scratch them to see if their nails stick! I think at this point I would have preferred she asked a co-worker instead of winging it.) But two other staff members I eventually found immediately pointed out that certain loose weaves wouldn't be good and suggested fabrics that were stain resistant. I haven't bought the couch I like yet, but I think I will probably get it. I think the best part of this store is the huge variety of couches throughout the store so you can really try all types. Bonus points for having TWO couches that fit short people. read more

Gorgeous presentation. I love R&B. I have the braided sweater rug in grey and a sofa. the awesome thing about this brand is that they don't sell furniture they sell a lifestyle. You visit their showroom and you want to move in. The staff is warm and welcoming...I have two Boconcept sofas, one in my bedroom and the three seater in the living-room. I also have several coffee and side tables. Though I am a huge fan of Bo I have never left feeling warm & fuzzy. That is the difference, O& the detail of R&B cannot be beat...they have taken care of every detail of every room. read more

I'm pretty sure the manager will insult me online since he insulted me in the store, so take that with a grain of salt. I was treated horrifically in the store, as if I were a non-person. The manager ignored me completely so I got help from another associate. I was looking at furniture but also needed a second blanket to pair with one I had literally purchased the week prior. The week prior I took one of the blankets off the display shelf and was rung up, so I assumed I could do that again. Apparently not. I was yelled at, told to WAIT, told I had to wait until inventory was checked in the back, and told if it was not in the back I could not purchase the one I was holding which had tags on it. Despite the fact I had done that precise thing the week prior. I then told the manager that and he raised his voice at me and said I was treating him poorly! WHAT. the smallest type of man is the man who feels he needs to loudly condescend a woman in public and put her in her place. I was intending to purchase an entire apartment full of furniture, I had all the measurements and names of the pieces I wanted and was just double checking. Terrible customer service. They continually lie to their customers. They've twice promised delivery windows, confirmed it by e-mails, and then their drivers don't show up. When I called after the delivery window had passed today I was told I'm the next stop and truck is a couple miles away. Driver called an hour later and was still on a ferry and wouldn't be nearby for a while. The national delivery supervisor offered to waive the delivery fee if I would wait around all day. I told him to either come at a specific time or cancel the order. He said they couldn't commit to a time because they had other deliveries to do. They've sent a clear message their time is more important than their customers time. read more

We have been waiting 10 months for a sofa. Initially we were told it would be available in 3 months, then 4, then 5. Every month we receive the same automatic email. We would have cancelled our order and bought one elsewhere, but R&B keep dangling the carrot "it will come next month." (We bought a comparable sofa from Crate & Barrel; it arrived in 3 months). While the Covid-19 pandemic caused delays, at this point it is reasonable to expect suppliers to understand their pipeline. read more

I just got my couch, which I love, and beyond that, I was very impressed with everyone from Room and Board who helped in the process. The salesperson (Michelle) who I worked with at the new store, was knowledgable and helpful. She also very sweetly got excited for me when we found that I could still get the discontinued fabric I wanted. Then, today, I was REALLY pleased with the delivery guys, Xavier and Christian (I think), who expertly maneuvered the couch up two narrow and winding flights of stairs. They came right at the start of the two hour window, took all the trash with them, and even helped me to move a a chair that wasn't part of the delivery, but that I needed a hand with. Room and Board's furniture seems very nice, but it also seems that they go out of their way to help their customers. Sometimes it's worth spending a little more money just for that! read more

Furniture must be either picked up in Billerica or delivered, at a charge of $90 for a small chair, in a week (or many weeks if you want one of the alternative colors). A nice feature of the store itself, however, is pleasant outdoor seating on a couple of different levels (no refreshments served) and a generally pleasant interior to the showroom itself. Very helpful. Matthew was great assisting me with a purchase for a lamp that was to be delivered. It's a very city concept that you cannot purchase anything in store however their delivery was great and they said if anything got stolen off our front porch in the South End they would send another without any charge. The space is gorgeous. This is extra-great for their merchandise, high quality but some are purchases that take some thinking/budgeting. My partner and I stopped in to Room and Board because I had always wanted to go in and we've been searching for the right dresser for over a year now. It was a spur of the moment decision and it was raining so the two of us looked a bit blah in our sweatshirts and wet shoes. We were worried we'd be kind of waved off due to our attire. But the moment we stepped in, we were greeted by two cheery staff members. We eventually ran in to Dawn who took the time to listen to our musings on wood types and helped us find the perfect long and low dresser I've been dreaming of. She also took the time to bond with us over mutual interests and made our experience there comfortable. We shall definitely be coming back for that dresser and maybe some matching night stands. Wanted to write an update as we ended up going back and buying a couple furniture pieces for our home. We really loved room and board's clean modern style. Their white-glove delivery service was really cheap and very professional. They were quick and set up our furniture in no time. It was a steep investment for us but it has elevated our home and we are extremely happy with our purchases. The sales people were also very friendly and not pushy at all. Next time we are looking to furnish a room Room and Board will be at the top of our list to check out before we make a purchase. read more

I needed to furnish an entire apartment and I worked with Kate Parkinson, one of the in-store designers. She was so helpful and knowledgeable, I'm very happy with the selections she helped me make. She also kept my budget in mind and did not rush or pressure me. I was overwhelmed but Kate made it a good experience. She is an artist with a really good eye. I have also been happy with the phone service to schedule deliveries and the delivery guys themselves. It doesn't take too long to get the furniture, most of it is made here in the US. Delivery: We had a custom couch delivered this past week. Even the delivery staff was top-notch. Polite, helpful, conscientious (they even took their shoes off before coming in my house-- i was BLOWN AWAY). We recently bought a new sofa and ottoman from Room & Board (August, 2019) and our experience from sales to delivery was excellent. Our salesperson, Soledad, while new to the store, went out of her way to find out what we needed and showed us several options. She was not afraid to ask for help from other associates (which to me shows strong self confidence) to make sure we had all the information to make the best choice. The delivery guys (delivered our sofa on August 28) were extremely professional and friendly. While Room & Board is a "higher end" furniture store, the quality of this sofa and the professionalism of the associates is worth the extra expense. read more

We recently purchased a full size Oxford Sofa from Room and Board in Boston. Two room and board employees delivered it. Apperantly one of the legs was missing its plastic cover at the bottom, and a huge nail was completely exposed. Not sure how they can miss this or how the delivery guys overlook such a thing! Delivery guys pushed the sofa into the wall creating a huge, deep mark that ruined a 40 cm by 40 cm area in our living room. We have been dealing with the Room and Board team since then trying to get this resolved, so far zero progress and a huge disappointment in their ownership of a problem they caused... I went to the store in Boston to explain what happened, and no one was interested to hear. They said I should deal with the delivery team. I reached out to the delivery team, who sent someone to our house. while a very nice man, he was not able to fix it at all... He tried to cover it with furniture colored sticks, where this is a large area with deep marks and completely damaged strips of hardwood flooring. I tried to get Room and Board to put my review on their website, and they have been coming up with all kinds of excuses to not do so... Last I heard was since my complaint was not product related, they had no way of displaying on their website. Now they are telling me they will schedule yet another person to come and take a look, and I have no idea why the prior person who came to take a look cannot describe. They are telling this is a process that can take a while. Long story short, do not let Room and Board into your home. We did and regret deeply. Expensive product, horrible service and a company that will not take responsibility in their actions. I have had to cove the area with rugs so we are not constantly upset looking at how they damaged our home. I have a baby and job to deal with and these guys are trying to wear us down with endless lip service and people coming to our house trying to 'cover up' a damage... We thought we were buying from an All-American company, contributing to local economy and expected decent service. Instead we ended up with massive damage and a bunch of lip service. 5 stars for phone customer service and quality: First let me say that we have been ordering from room and board for several years now. Most of our house is furnished with these products and you can not beat the customer service or the high quality of each piece. 2 stars for the Boston in store customer service: we moved from NYC to Boston recently and the in store service does not compare. We have purchased a large amount of furniture recently and both occasions we were mislead by the sales person. She did not clearly communicate the store policies, delivery dates or next steps that were taking place for both orders. I do not mind if i have to wait for my pieces because this furniture is high quality and worth the wait, however if we ask questions regarding order changes and how it affects the delivery dates the sales person should know the correct answers, not just tell us what we want to hear. We also purchased a floor sample a few months after this first mix up and the same person mislead us again having us believe that the floor sample would be delivered with our other pieces only to find out not only were we told the wrong delivery date but delivery hadn't even been scheduled yet, so we were sitting home waiting for a delivery that was not coming. This person was not clear in how purchase of floor samples works or how it affect delivery. There was no offering of information regarding options for delivery of the sofa and perhaps taking the floor sample home with us that day rather than waiting for the one day a year they do a change over which was 6 weeks after we made the purchase. We will continue to shop at Room and Board but will not be using the same sales associated. Room and Board please educate the Boston in-store staff on delivery policies and floor sample purchase protocols. read more

I was all excited to go in and buy a specific bed a friend had recommended. Even told this story to the guy on the first floor. He couldn't have made me feel like he wanted to pass me off quick enough. Then I went to the 4th Floor as he told me and The woman there could not get off her seat to show me around telling me that the beds were all over the show room. When she did get off her seat, she minimally answered my questions at the first bed. I immediately went down and told the manager that I would not purchase at this store because their customer service was way below par. I can't help but feel that maybe they treated me this way because I came in with shorts and a t-shirt. At the very least if they did treat me like this because I did not have any money then at least some of the population would be treated with more respect. read more

The showroom is amazing. The staff in the showroom are pleasant. The furniture is great quality and looks even better in-person than online. The problem is actually getting the furniture undamaged. I picked up some things at the warehouse in Billerica and it was not boxed. They wrapped it for me because I didn't want to take it in the snow, in the car, unprotected. I was perplexed. They say they unbox it to inspect it at the warehouse, which is great. But why not re-box it? I was anxious transporting it, but was successful. The other items came UPS and two out of four of them were damaged. I ordered two frames. One was shrink wrapped so tightly it took minutes to unwrap. It was perfect. The other was barely taped closed and damaged. It was like the second one was a damaged return that was just added to my order. Now it's a slow hassle to get the exchanges and labels etc to try again. The emails confirming exchanges are confusing, showing balances due. Will take up to 48 hours to get UPS labels emailed. Then wait for exchanges to be received. Then another week plus to get it a second time. It's a shame because the furniture and the showroom are incredible. It's amazing when it's finally in your home, undamaged. I was elated. Now I'm disappointed and frustrated. Low score because of the actual fulfillment process/issues at the warehouse and via UPS. read more

Room & Board is still fairly new to the Boston area but has a nice collection of contemporary items with a traditional flare, if you will. The store on Mass Ave is indeed massive and spread across four floors including living room, dining room, bedroom, home office, and children's. The staff is friendly and eager to please especially salesperson Emily who is very knowledgeable about the stores products and also ensured proper follow-up and delivery of my order. I still prefer the more contemporary style of a DWR or Montage but Room & Board is definitely worth checking out. read more
