I was really disappointed with my experience at the Freehold location of Rook Coffee. My husband and I both ordered coffees, including a latte, and the experience was not what we expected at all. The latte was not served hot, which we weren't informed about when ordering. On top of that, it came black--with no milk--which is very unusual for a latte. When we asked about it, we were told that milk isn't automatically included, which is not typical and wasn't explained upfront. Beyond the confusion with the drinks, the staff came across as rude and unhelpful when we tried to clarify. Overall, it was a frustrating experience, and unfortunately we would not return. read more

I've heard so much about Rook from almost every Jersey local and I was SO excited to finally come across one to try it. But dare I say -- it isn't worth the hype? Maybe it was the fact that we were the last customers (so sorry for coming in 15 min before close!) but being rudely dismissed by staff left a bad taste in our mouth. The coffee was also very average -- there wasn't anything special to it and if anything our lattes & iced coffees tasted fully like milk. Maybe I'll give Rook a shot again in the future, but I'm definitely not rushing to have a cup of coffee from here anytime soon. read more

Solid cold brew option in an area that only had Starbucks and Dunkin - both of which I find to have terrible coffee. Went yesterday, the store was PACKED but the line moved quickly. There appeared to be a lot of mobile orders, I could see people running in and grabbing them from the counter. The menu is very confusing for a first timer. I'm still not sure what I ordered. The cashier was SO NICE and helpful, she explained the flavors to me (and assured me there's no added sugar, unless you want to add it). I had a mocha cold brew with oat milk. Does that mean it's latte style? I'm not sure. Whatever it was it was good, best coffee I've had in the area so far. I'd love if they explained on their website or menu a little more detail about what you're getting when you order, because it's not clear. They have lots of cute merch, however there is no seating so it's definitely a "to go" place. read more

After my first visit at Rook Coffee, I have been dreaming about going back. The s'mores style cold brew was so smooth, yet packed a punch in terms of caffeine. With the addition of agave sweetener and oat milk, I loved how unique this drink was for a cold brew. The employee working was so friendly and helpful when I was deciding what to get. Hands down, one of my favorite coffee/tea places in central Jersey. Their beverages are always in point without the bougie prices. The service is always excellent. You are met with friendly people who make your experience extremely pleasant. It's like visiting old friends because they always make you feel good when you depart. I am sad to say there are no seats. Most people come and make their order or use their app and then grab their beverages and sometimes an edible treat and leave. Well, the ambience doesn't encourage you to sit and stay for lack of seating, it's a very calm and chill place to wait for your beverage to be made. Quick shoutout to all the baristas who work there. I was a bit taken aback when I learned that Rook doesn't do hot espresso drinks, like lattes and cappuccinos, but I won't hold it against them. However, it did make the entire ordering process complicated and time-consuming, which is unnecessary. If they're going to do coffee differently, they need an efficient way to explain it to people who are unfamiliar. Anyway, I tried the latte-style drink with oat milk, which is not extra here. It just tasted like coffee with milk in it, so I'm not sure what the style is referring to. The cup was also entirely ice, so I finished the whole thing before even leaving the parking lot. My husband got the New Orleans cold brew with whole milk, and he didn't seem to care for it. His response was "I don't know what I'm drinking." This is my favorite coffee shop in the area. They make pour over coffees and also have flavored cold brews. Be warned that they don't have espresso here, however. That being said, the coffee here is probably in my top 5. The flavored coffee doesn't have added sugar and the flavors really shine. I've enjoyed their Turkish style (cardamom, I usually ask for it over medium roast instead of light roast), mocha, and gingerbread. Their cold brews are also delicious, with flavors including mocha style and limited offerings like pumpkin, hazelnut mocha, cinammon vanilla (my all time favorite) and mint mocha. I definitely would recommend this place. read more

This is one of my favorite places to stop in when I am visiting New Jersey. Rook has extremely high-quality coffee., and I would definitely recommend the cold brew. They currently have a strawberry mocha that is outstanding. However, I do wish that there were more options on the menu. read more

Food: They're known for their delicious coffee! Had the pleasure of being near the shore when they first began opening up and their coffee was absolutely delicious- beans were roasted locally, transported to their store and grounded to make some extremely fresh real coffee. Starbucks is good but it takes away from what a coffee is suppose to taste in my opinion. Due to COVID, their way of ordering has been a bit of a hassle- some places wouldn't allow instore order/only mobile but recently (at least the location near me) has allowing customers come and order within the store! Cost: A little pricey but worth the fresh cup of coffee! Environment: These stores have always been a 'pick up and go' rather than a sit down style. Since this was how it originally started, with COVID, I feel like they have been able to adjust pretty well! Service: Always great service and great people who work here! It can definitely get busy sometimes (causing bit of a wait time) but you see that everyone is working hard to fulfill the orders! Uniqueness: Great fresh coffee! read more

Best coffee in New Jersey hands down. If I don't make coffee at home, the only place I will get coffee from is rook. They have every type of roast you could possibly think of. My go to order is usually a Guatemalan with half and half and agave and it is the perfect amount of bitter to sweet ratio and it is not super acidic. The only downside of rock is that there's nowhere to really sit and enjoy your coffee. The places are always super super clean and the staff is always a great. But I would love a seating area for the days that I just want to sit and chill in the coffee shop. read more

ok so having been a pretty regular iced coffee drinker, I try them all. It seems that a new coffee place opens just about every other week in NY/NJ area. My daughter, who is a major coffee drinker and has turned me on to many, has turned me on to Rook and I will tell you they are by far the best of them all. Always same taste, great staff, quick. This place covers all bases and checks every box. Dont waste your time anywhere else. This place is the real deal. There is only 1 issue I have and that is that it closes early (5pm). I am convinced if this place stayed open until 9-10pm it would make more money than they realize as the competition is so far behind. read more

I've been commuting down Rt 33 for the last two weeks and tired of the choice of Wawa, Quick Chek or Dunkin coffee. I googled some coffee shops along the way and came across this one. This shop is Located in a strip mall and has a cool rustic vibe. Nice selection of Cold Brew or Coffee but there are no teas or espresso options. I did appreciate they had all types of milk and they also have a bunch of branded swag for sale and bakery items. All the coffee was made to order -and I soon came to realize that's why so many people placed mobile orders. Staff was busy working but it did take about 5 minutes for my coffee so if you're used to grab and go, this is your warning you'll need to wait for it to brew :) read more

I will forever rate every Rook location with 5 stars. I admire this business so much and they are a part of my daily routine. I used to live near the shore which is where Rook is primarily located. So I tried them right around when they first opened and have been hooked ever since. I now make a point to get coffee there anytime we are visiting our parents who still live in that area. AND, I have a coffee subscription with them. So, I have 2 bags of coffee shipped to me every month, which is amazing. Even though I no longer live near a Rook (please branch out to my area), I can enjoy their coffee every day. Also, they prepare it to your liking. I have a French press so, they grind the coffee beans up accordingly, or you can get them whole. When I visit a physical location, I am always greeted by a friendly team member. The environment is always very warm, and lively. I typically order a Bigger, (Large) New Orleans Cold Brew with coconut milk, (or oat milk now that they offer it), no sweetener. The coffee is consistent and delicious. Truly the best coffee I have ever tasted. They also have incredible merch at each shop. I have a corkcicle tumbler from them with a marble pattern all over. I use it every day and I love it. Overall, I love Rook so much and will never stop talking about it. Haha! I would love to work for their corporate office if I didn't live so far away. read more

I'm a Starbucks girl, my gold card proves it. Rook is better. By far, better. Full disclosure though, it's a bit slower, as it's pour over for the hot coffees. There's a short menu which you'd think would make it easier to choose, but no. Everything is so good it's hard to decide. I think my absolute favorite is the Turkish because they put cardamom in it...but it only comes in hot. So if I'm looking for iced with personality, I'll get the New Orleans...comes with chicory, just like they make in the Big Easy. Then on top of that, they have seasonal flavors...try them all, they are that good. Why the gold card you might ask? The closest Rook to me is 20 minutes away....but hopefully there's one closer to you so you can give up your gold card. They have order ahead, reward points and unfortunately limited snacks. They also have merch. Their sweatshirts are so soft, I spent last winter in them since we were all stuck at home anyways ;) read more

Rook Coffee Roasters has ten retail outlets in Central JerZee, making it a pleasant success story in that part of the Universe. I visited their new shop on Main Street, Freehold, last week on my way back to the office after an appearance in the Monmouth County Courthouse for oral argument. The case went well, so I wanted to treat myself to a little fresh caffeine for the drive. The space was small, but attractively appointed in mostly black. There were no tables, but there was standing room along a shelf on one wall. The baristas were young and motivated, with a manager present overseeing the well run operation. A chalkboard on the wall behind the workspace described their offerings. Bins with pastries looked rather depleted by the time I arrived around 11:30, but I saw a few scones, bagels and muffins. My favorite coffee comes from Ethiopia, so when I saw Rook had some, I went for a simple pour over, or as close as they could get to it. As there was some already brewed, I went with that with room for a spot of milk. The Horn of Africa has grown java beans for a few thousand years. It is the largest export of Ethiopia. Their Sidamo and Yirgacheffe are some of the best coffees I have ever enjoyed. They are usually clear tasting with hints of lemon or other citrus notes. Sometimes a little chocolate or mocha sneaks in if from higher elevations on the shady side of the mountain. Really terrific joe. The coffee I had from Rook was not like that. It was heavy and somewhat bitter, making me suspect it was mislabeled, and not true Ethiopian single batch nor blended beans. It tasted much more like a South American or Indonesian variety, more musky and muddled. Not that it wasn't good, it just wasn't what I expected. It was obvious these folks generally knew what they were doing and my order just went astray for some reason. It happens. If I find myself anywhere near one of their stores I will certainly give them another try. This Black Crow (Rook) will remain on my radar. read more

Go somewhere else! I paid $5.70 for a 8oz coffee.. I asked for more coffee and not to add anymore milk. The barista took my ice coffee brought in the back and just added more milk... when I asked if more coffee was added he stated that I would need to pay .75cents for another once. As if the margin on coffee wasn't already profitable. Why wasnt this told me before taking my cup back? Do you think fooling people by adding more milk a good business plan? Starbucks is well known for a reason. Also your staff is working at a coffee shop.. they should take theirs hoods off and smile not look like they need a cup of coffee themselves. They never make my coffee wrong and I love that they're always really nice! I usually go out of my way to come here even though I work at the raceway mall 3min away. I'm pretty sure I still will go out of my way to come here even though I'll be working a job farther away as the staff here really makes it feel warm and welcoming. Rook is fantastic, but this location is definitely lackluster in terms of service and coffee quality. Staff are fine, but don't quite know how to brew properly. Coffee here is always more burnt than the other locations, and not nearly as flavorful. They really need to re-evaluate the training process or QC at this branch. Try any other branch before judging Rook; by far the best one being the Red Bank location. read more
