Oxtail dinner special and hash n rice
Alex I.

While driving through Elgin, we happened upon the hidden gem Ronnie's Ribs -- and we're so glad we stopped! If you're looking for small-town charm paired with incredible flavor, this is absolutely the place. We even had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Ronnie himself. Hearing a bit about the experiences that inspired him to open the restaurant made the visit feel even more special. We tried the oxtail plate (an occasional special), and it was incredible -- super tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat. The mac and cheese was perfectly cheesy and salty in the best way, and the rice n hash was packed with flavor. Ronnie also let us try some brisket with his vinegar-based BBQ sauce. The brisket was succulent with really unique spices, and the sauce paired with it perfectly. If you're passing through Elgin, it's definitely worth the stop.

Blink and you would pass this place. No indoor seating, just outdoor picnic benches. An unassuming exterior with friendly service that attracts the masses so it intrigued me. So tonight we got to go in anticipation of why people line up for this place. Definitely not the ambiance, so that leaves the food. It did not disappoint in quality or quantity. Ribs that fall off the bone, perfectly seasoned, covered in a sumptuous sauce perfectly sweet and savory. You see , it smelled so good we did not make it home to try this barbecue delicacy. And we got the last rack of baby backs available till 7. I was always told a restaurant doesn't have to be fancy to be good just serve quality. Apparently judging by the crowds at Ronnie's others see it the same way.

I haven't been to Ronnie's in several years but decided today to get lunch. I ordered the brisket dinner and a 1/2 chicken dinner. The chicken was great. Came with a nice sized 1/2 chicken, roll, Cole slaw, bbq sauce, green beans and rice with hash. My wife asked for the chicken and said it was great. Very good tasting and the sauce is excellent. She's not much of a. green bean fan done the southern way so she gave them to me...and they were great. I liked the Cole slaw (sort of a KFC type). She had a dessert that was some type of an apple baked bread...excellent. I thought my brisket was sort of too well done. It was good, but I was a little disappointed. I've had his ribs and they have been great, but this was my first try at the brisket. I did like the hash/rice. Baked beans were good. Next time I go back I'll try the ribs again or the chicken. Service was fast.

Ordered 2 smoked chickens, full of flavor & cooked perfectly

Best smoked chicken I've ever had, full of flavor & love in every bite! The vinegar based sauce on the side complimented the chicken very well. The smoked Mac and cheese was also delicious. Can't wait to come back and try more of their amazing menu

I LOVE barbecue! And this place definitely fulfilled my cravings. It's a cute little shack in Elgin and the lady at the window was so sweet. She was able to answer my questions and make sure my order was right. The only disappointment was they were out of turkey wings. We ordered a brisket dinner with hash and rice and green beans, chicken wings, and half rack of ribs with sauce on the side. Let me just say first, the brisket was so tender and the green beans were perfectly done. My bf said the hash and rice was perfectly made, exactly how it should be. The chicken wings and ribs had the perfect smokey flavor and their homemade BBQ sauce made it all taste better. I was never crazy about SC bbq sauce cuz I don't like mustard but I'm starting to get hooked on it. It was sweet but not too sweet and the perfect amount of tang. I'm so glad I stopped here for dinner.

This unpretentious shack, which offers only outdoor dining, sits alongside the road in Elgin, a few miles north of interstate 20. And With a google rating of 4.6 on the strength of 243 reviews, and an equally high rating on Yelp, this has been our sleeper in South Carolina for quite some time. The price point is pretty good: $21.48 purchased a quart of hash, and a rib sampler. The single rib was huge and meaty (membrane on), with a light and pleasant rub that allowed the flavor of the meat to shine. This is a really good rib. The mound of chopped pork that accompanied the rib was beautifully sauced ... but the hash is superb ... so much so that my original order of a pint turned into a quart! You should give this one a try.

It makes absolutely no sense how good this food was. And AFFORDABLE!! Rib dinner plate is 9.99 on Fridays and Saturdays and it took me all day Saturday to finish all of this. 3.5 juicy, meaty, ribs. Coleslaw, hash and rice, baked beans, and a slice of bread. For another $1.00 throw in a can soda to wash this down. The hash and rice had a distinct taste to it. A little vinegar-Ry, a little heat, but something about it made me kept eating it, Lolol! Ribs were tender and juicy. The meat melted in your mouth. Even included an additional cup of sauce. I didn't eat the coleslaw, was just too full to try it. It's a take out type of spot and there is a small patio area off yo the side. Or a park area nearby if you want to pig out in peace. Friendly staff. Very professional. Ribs are worth it!

Gyromania is a good lil Greek restaurant in Elgin, in the same building that was the HWY55. Great food, service us good, they need to work on cleanliness. We've been here 3 times already a 1 out of the 3 they were really busy. However our last time I seen 4 tables needing cleaned they had 3 girls who take orders 2 of them were not busy, so I'm nfs who cleans tables but apparently not the ones who takes your order. So they needed spoons & knives, they had forks, but the food was pretty good. This time I got the gyro on Pita and Greek ff good stuff. My honey got just the gyro on Pita. Yes we will go back. I just hope it's got clean tables.

Midwood Smokehouse... WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?!…read more Imagine me singing like the Campbell's commercial because BABYYYYY! I am absolutely appalled and ashamed that we visited Columbia back in September and somehow missed this goodness! All I wanted was a simple sandwich after leaving Family Day on base... Opened Yelp, and BOOM! Midwood Smokehouse appeared. Six minutes away? Oh, AND it's in a shopping center with Whole Foods? Say less! The original plan was takeout. But here comes my mother-in-love... "Lady T, you want to sit down and have a cocktail?" Well, don't mind if I do! I'm still mentally somewhere along the Mediterranean coast, enjoying my Aperol spritz era, but this time I settled for a gin and tonic... And let me tell you about our bartender! The moment he set that glass down, I could smell the gin! Now, I know how that sounds, but listen... I'm in my white liquor season, and he understood the assignment! Perfectly made! Enough to give me a little buzz before my Whole Foods adventure. Nothing over the top... just enough to remind me that he was NOT playing! But let's talk about the establishment itself. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was evident. The young man at the entrance politely directed us toward the back to place our takeout order. The gentleman who assisted us was equally pleasant, mannerable, and professional... he was also our bartender. During our conversation, he shared that he's a youth pastor, which genuinely warmed our hearts. Many prayers and blessings to him as he continues his pastoral journey. Something else stood out... THE REGULARS! We noticed customers coming in who were clearly familiar faces to the staff... And honestly, we've observed that at several establishments during this Columbia visit. There's something special about a place where the staff knows its customers. That speaks volumes! Now... THE FOOD! Because BABYYYYY! We returned to the hotel with our order, and let me tell you... THE BAKED BEANS!!! Listen, I LOVE a good baked bean, and these right here?! FREAKING PHENOMENAL! Somebody needs to explain why I was sitting in my hotel room contemplating ordering another serving! CLOCK IT! The burnt ends? GOODNESS GRACIOUS! Juicy, tender, beautifully seasoned, with just the right amount of crisp! Not burnt to the point where you're tasting charcoal, but that perfectly executed exterior that complements the tenderness inside. Somebody on the grill and/or the kitchen KNOWS what they're doing! The mac and cheese? Okay, now... It was good, but it wasn't taking home the trophy. I'm personally not a fan of shell pasta for mac and cheese, and I would've loved a little more cheese and creaminess to give it that rich finish. It held its own, though! We're giving it an honorable mention. It didn't miss... it just didn't win the award and that's ok... this little league where everyone gets a ... The hush puppies? Delicious! Listen... I probably need to leave bread alone, but clearly that wasn't happening today! Absolutely delicious as well! Overall, Midwood Smokehouse deserves a ROUND OF APPLAUSE! TENS ACROSS THE BOARD for the overall experience! From the hospitality and atmosphere... to the bartender's cocktail craftsmanship and the phenomenal BBQ, this was such an unexpected treat... And the fact that I haven't even told my husband I'm considering another baked bean order... well, that's between me, Yelp, and the Lord!

My inner voice…read moreof confidence, the one that says "it's gonna be great," was already humming before I even stepped inside. At first glance, I wondered what exactly this industrial looking neighborhood had to do with good food. Still, I parked, walked in, and was immediately greeted by the unmistakable aroma of meat that had been slow smoking all day long. A very kind older lady welcomed me and explained that the buffet was all-you-can-eat for just $17. That sounded easy enough. I grabbed a plate and began my journey down the line. There were the staples: rice, collard greens, fried okra, hush puppies. Then came the showstoppers. A massive tray of mac & cheese, golden fried chicken, barbecue chicken, and pulled pork that looked like it had been tended with care. Oh, my. Off to the side sat squeeze bottles of sauce and ketchup, flanked by potato salad, cole slaw, and two varieties of pickles that added a crisp counterpoint to the richness of the meats. I ate far more than I intended, but every bite was worth it. The mac & cheese was excellent, very cheesy and full of flavor. Maybe not quite as good as when Mrs. K. blesses me with her recipe, but still, excellent. The barbecue chicken was moist and seasoned just right. The pulled pork was some of the best I have had, with a few larger pieces mixed in that gave it texture and depth. It was so good it really didn't need any sauce at all. If desserts were offered, I didn't see them. A small scoop of banana pudding would have tied the whole experience together in a perfect knot. Even without it, this was a five-star meal in my book. Yum, and then yum again. [Review 1512 of 2025 - 1366 in South Carolina - 25063 overall]

Schuler's is a buffet style barbecue and all you can eat. Their pulled pork is their best meat. I wasn't really impressed with their ribs though. Don't get me wrong, the were pretty good but I certainly wasn't blown away. Their fried chicken is good but again not much different from most buffets in South Carolina. Their collards are nice and they do offer hash. If you're thinking corn beef hash, it's not that. It's a BBQ or liver hash and it's definitely an acquired taste. I usually put it over rice if I get it. Hash was highly popular in South Carolina for many years. It can't hurt to try it as Schuler's is actually pretty good. Not my favorite barbecue in the area but it's cool place with great people.
