"We provide quality food and groceries to hungry individuals across our 30 county service area. Since 1982, we've distributed more than 250 million pounds of food and fed more than 14 million people." So why am I talking about them? Because I recently had the privilege of volunteering at their food bank. "Bank" should honestly be replaced with "warehouse" because that is exactly what it is. They have boxes for food and drinks coming in (by the pallet) and boxes ready to sort then boxes that have been packed up and ready to ship across the region. And this place is systemic. You have a job and they show you how to do that job as well as be available for questions. I have served at and taken groups to a number of food warehouses and soup kitchens throughout my life. This, by far, is one of the best organized ones I have encountered. The instructions will tell you, but let me say it again. Wear comfortable shoes and comfortable clothes. Prepare to sweat and know that you may have to lift up to 20 pounds. Feeding people isn't always easy, but it is always worth it. Find a way to support. *Insider's Tip -Volunteer either at the Food Bank or the Master's Table (a once-a-day meal providing location downtown). From the exterior it may appear to be nothing of worth, but trust me it is a treasure chest filled with benevolence. There is a weekly grocery pickup service, meals provided, food bank, clothing bank, community services mediation, and more. The facility is two stories and a basketball court-sized gym area. The team is collaborative in focus, which is what brought about my involvement with them, and always seeking to come alongside their neighbors. I'm talking about complete cussing and yelling at her infront of other residents embarrassing her to the point of crying. She is afraid to let the director know because others have reported this same problem and it seems like all of them stick together and lie for each other. And that isn't the only biggest issue on the staff, there is another nightmare that has been addressed MULTIPLE TIMES and has BeenVerified looked. One of the older house mothers that work here has been caught taking the blankets off these women that are undressed and ASLEEP in their beds at night and she will stand over them and just STARE AT THEM. She has touched residents and made inappropriate comments as well. THIS IS SICK. I do not understand for the life of me why this woman has not been fired yet. If you are an official reading this please help these ladies. Another thing - there is NO FOOD BEING COOKED FOR THEM ON THE WEEKENDS. The week that they opened, my child was allowed to go one day before they denied her back due to misunderstandings on THEIR part. So this is three weeks in a row I was not able to go to work. So by the 3rd week I was not paid for calling out and then as a result of not working in office for 3 weeks in a row, I was fired. When I tried to come up with a solution(only pay for the one day my child was allowed in daycare) I was ignored. Fast forward a month and a half later every single week had been paid, yet they still refused to work with me on the one week that was denied service. When told I was ultimately fired due to the lack of daycare, they said they were sorry I was fired due to them but they were still firm on needing their FULL payment. I can remember spending my youth in the gym, at the track, or just running around the area. This park is usually bustling with people and different activities. They added a pool in recent years so they are things going on there as well. There is also a senior center located here too. My grandmother would spend her days creating great ceramic artwork while she was here. I love that this place has something for the whole family to enjoy. The track is pretty large and normally filled with people getting in shape or trying to stay in shape. There is a basketball court here as well. I would spend my days sometimes watching others play and cheering them on!!! I haven't been here in years but I'm sure this place is still a great place for the whole family!!!!

While we were long-time members, a recent failure by management to handle a situation professionally forced us to withdraw before the year was up. I am sharing our experience to help other parents make an informed decision. Following a peer rumor that inadvertently involved the business, my minor daughter proactively requested a meeting with the owners to clarify the situation. Given our long history, she expected a safe, moderated environment. Instead, we found the meeting to be hostile. In our experience, the co-owner spoke to my daughter in an aggressively loud and elevated tone before she could finish speaking. The situation felt so unsafe and unprovoked that I felt compelled to physically remove my child from the room, as the owner could not de-escalate the interaction. When my husband subsequently met with the owners to address this behavior, we felt there was a complete lack of accountability or apology. Furthermore, during this discussion, the owners shared details regarding another child's past behavioral history by name. This lack of discretion left us with no confidence that student privacy is respected behind closed doors. Worse, we learned that instead of mitigating the peer conflict, leadership allegedly instructed other teens in the program to focus their grievances toward our daughter and another student. While we understand that business owners cannot prevent outside rumors, the way this peer conflict was handled felt entirely inappropriate for educators responsible for minors. While families may have a fine experience when things run smoothly, our situation completely changed how we view this leadership. In our opinion, Ft. Steam handles conflict poorly and does not maintain the level of professionalism or student privacy we expect from an educational environment. Since sharing our experience, there have reportedly been threats of legal action toward individuals and groups connected to discussions about Ft. Steam and their handling of similar interactions.
