It's an annual check up & no particular issues to report. There's a bit of a wait to be called in, about 10 minutes. Daniel called me in & he's absolutely pleasant & really looks like he loves working at this practice. Waited about another 10-12 minutes for Dr. Canceko & when he arrived, he was apologetic for the wait time. My consult/visit was well my time and his concern is genuine. He did the usual: lymph node , heart lung sounds , abdominal & pedal edema checks--and truly inquired how I was doing. He listened intently. Included were the well women inquiries, colorectal cancer screening, mammograms--if Ive scheduled or had these done. It was a really good clinic visit.

Frustrating Experience with Poor Communication…read more I've been calling Keck of USC in Glendale all day to get basic information about my outpatient surgery scheduled for tomorrow -- and I still haven't received a pre-op call or any official confirmation of my surgery time. This is incredibly stressful, especially the day before a medical procedure. Some of the staff I spoke to were kind and tried to help, and I appreciate them. But unfortunately, the last person I spoke with didn't even give me her name. She was very rude, dismissive, and actually cut me off while I was still talking. That kind of treatment is unacceptable when patients are already anxious and trying to get clarity about their health and schedule. Patients deserve better communication, more respect, and basic professionalism -- especially from a hospital with Keck's reputation. I hope leadership seriously addresses the gaps in coordination and patient support at this location.

And you can bet your life that the Boyle Heights Clinic is going to aggressively pursue collection of that bill. So I need to find another primary care doctor. Which means I need to have my medical records sent to the new doctor. Which means calling the front desk. Which means that they will not answer the phone, and they will not return any message you leave. And if you call the only line that answers, you get through to the Glendale call center, but they cannot do anything with your records, which are at Boyle Heights, and Boyle Heights does not answer the phone, does not return phone calls, does not do anything that remotely passes for patient service. One star for this clinic is too high. It should be Negative One Billion Stars. If you go to the Boyle Heights Clinic, you are risking your health and your finances. Stay away, Stay far away. You have been warned.

I had my first appointment, where the doctor went over all the specifics. We set a surgery date, and I booked a room at the adjacent hotel (also USC property). The morning of the surgery, it was a quick walk across the street. The attending anesthesiologist and her fellow were very friendly. They applied the nerve block, and we had a nice friendly chat while we waited for my turn in the OR. Once that came, I was wheeled in, where the orthopedic surgery waited. I woke up that afternoon, and ready to head home post-surgery. The only negative to coming here via VA community care is dealing with the business office. They were attempting to charge me the difference from what the VA covered. Fellow veterans, if you are reading, please note: you DO NOT have to pay the difference. It's in the contract that USC signed with the US Dept. of Veterans' Affairs. So if anyone from the business office tries pulling these shenanigans, stand your ground. Please note, these were shenanigans from the business office, NOT the clinical side of Keck. The clinical side... my surgeon and my anesthesiologist, were phenomenal in their work.

The staff also wears gloves when handling bodily fluids or when touching patients. There are some hand sanitizers available for patients to use. This place is open and available with limited capacity. They are sanitizing in between patients. I mention these things in my reviews for the sake of protecting immunocompromised people like the elderly and people sick with cancer and other illnesses. COVID-19 Vaccination Proof: This establishment currently does not require proof of vaccination. While I was here in this establishment, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They also do not allow pets in their establishment UNLESS it's a service animal. Parking: The parking lot for this establishment is behind the building and it is very small. The lot does get full quickly, so you may have to find some street parking, but that shouldn't be an issue. Establishment: The establishment itself is very clean, neat, tidy, small, and organized. They recently moved to a new location, and I love everything except the parking lot because it's so small. A nice upgrade in office space. Yay! Staff: The staff here are very friendly, kind, warm, welcoming, and helpful. They accept both cash and credit cards. There is no credit card minimum. Dr. Jen, as always, is very professional, compassionate, empathetic, and knowledgeable. He doesn't rush, and he truly listens to his patients. I love that he isn't dismissive at all. And dare I say it was a very pleasant visit to Dr. Jen's office for the most part... compared to other doctor visits I've been to, going to Dr. Jen definitely won't be daunting compared to others I've been to. My first impression of the place was already a good start, with a very friendly staff and I appreciate that this place seems to keep things in order where I seemed to be the only patient in the office at the time (which is great for the pandemic situation). Dr. Jen was very thorough in my check-up and I specifically came here to also get a pap smear all at once. Very professional throughout, including his female staff member. The pap smear wasn't all that bad (granted my body wasn't cooperating for part of it but that's not his fault) and he made sure I was comfortable the whole time too. Logistics-wise, it was about 3 months out from when I made my appointment call, but I was ok with it since I didn't have an urgent reason. Office itself is in a good location. It's on the 3rd floor and you can find the entrance to the elevators next to the pharmacy. Bonus for the lab being downstairs if you need to get your blood drawn in the future after the doctor's visit, so it's nice that everything you need is in one location. There's free parking around the building and I didn't have trouble snagging a spot on a Friday afternoon.

They gave him the WRONG documents, it was the blood work papers for another patient of theirs (who is female and not even the same gender as my uncle). They were not careful and didnt check the paper before giving it to him! So he had to go back a 2nd time to rectify the situation. Unfortunately, the front desk and doctor kept claiming that no mistake was made, not checking the name on the paper and still insisting that they were right. They ignored his concern, met him with animosity, and kept insisting he was wrong. The doctor was extremely rude, dismissed him, and didnt care to assess the issue at all. They were extremely rude, inconsiderate, and brash. It wasn't until my uncle had the chance to point out the discrepancy in the names and they finally realized the issue. I can't speak of any doctor's expertise who advises that one's skull can increase in size due to weight gain which in itself was not normal. Generally, if you do not present like the textbook lab-wise and do have an adenoma on any gland in your body you will likely be misdiagnosed. You need to seek out an advanced endocrinologist who specializes exclusively in the particular gland you want evaluated, and nothing else. I would not consider Dr. Carmichael to be astute in his field beyond textbook cases. Furthermore, he has the bedside manner of someone who hates himself. All I can say, is you know your body best. If you are seeking evaluation for a pituitary issue, and you are suffering, your condition is worsening, you've exhausted other interventions and have seen various specialists to rule out other issues and none have improved your condition then you need to get a second opinion from a specialist at a Pituitary Center of Excellence (PTCOE). I know of two, Barrow and UCSF and even if your plan doesn't cover those specialist centers, you should fight to get care with them as it may be your only chance to be get proper care. Also, be aware that non-functional adenomas can still cause problems.

If you research his reviews from when he was a family practice doctor in a private clinic in West Hollywood, he was at 2 stars. Same exact complaints from his patients there. He has the fakest demeanor about him and is completely dismissive and curt. He refuses to think outside the box and gets easily intimidated by anyone who has a shred of knowledge of their endocrine disease and asks too many questions. He was dogmatic and his bed side manor was awful. If you have any endocrine issues, please go elsewhere. This guy nearly killed me by pulling me off medicine another endocrinologist put me on and completely ignored the plethora of classic schoolhouse patient symptoms even a resident rookie doctor would have known better. I will never step foot in this clinic again and highly recommend anyone with addisons or any endocrine/adrenal or pituitary issue to steer far away from Dr. Carmichael. He should find a new career.
