Have been here a couple of times and wait time has always been long. But this time, I waited more than 2 hours to be seen for a routine eye exam. They need to do better on scheduling patients so there isn't a backlog of people waiting, there were multiple patients in the waiting area that had been waiting for more than an hour. Dr Parihk is great, the actual exam took less than 3 minutes. Front office needs to do better. read more

The greatest bedside manners that I have ever met. Truly charming and a lot of patience. He even took out the time to discuss my situation with my husband on the phone. There are not enough stars or words to use for Dr Gentile! He saved my sight!!!! Through the grace of G-d I was speaking with a colleague of mine who I knew had a retina problem (as I did ) 2 years early. When I asked how her eye was, and she replied "Perfect" I said give me your doctors name!!!! She gave me Dr. Gentile's information. I had an appointment on a Tuesday, and was in surgery the same week on Thursday. He did not hesitate to help me. He is caring, patient, knowledgeable and knew exactly what to do. The doctors are nice and know their craft BUT the wait time is way to long. Last visit we waited 3 hours to see Dr. Silva and we had an early morning apointment. Never waited for such a long time to see a doctor in a rivate practice. They need to get more specialists into the practice. For a private practice it seems to function like a eye clinic. Dr. Gentile is truly the best of the best. I went to 4 other specialists before finding Dr, Gentile. His protocols are absolutely cutting edge including his use of a protocol of drops to attempt to close my macular hole. While we not achieve full closure from the drops, ultimately my surgery to close the hole was much more successful since the hole was much smaller. I'm 6 weeks out of surgery and almost at 20/20 in the surgery eye. JUST INCREDIBLE! Additionally, Dr. Gentile had me go for cataract surgery prior to the macular hole surgery. Had that not been done, I would have risked having the cataract removed later and that could have reopened the macular hole. None of the other dr's were going to do that. (They were all like factories) Dr. Gentile listens and takes your concerns very seriously. He's empathetic and kind and just literally an amazing human. I'm privileged to have him as my doctor. Dr. Gentile is a retina rock star. There is simply no better retina doctor out there. He is a exceptional physician who, clearly, has a passion for his field and it shows with the quality of care you receive as his patient. His kindness, strength, and expertise are par excellence above other doctors. I first met with Dr. Gentile when I developed a macula hole last year. Dr. Gentile doesn't jump into macula hole repair surgery; instead he treats it with a series of eye drops in an attempt to close the hole without surgery. Only a cutting edge and visionary physician - one who thinks outside the box - would resort to an simpler alternative method for macula hole repair instead of surgery. Ultimately, my macula hole didn't respond well enough to close on its own and had to be repaired surgically. The efficiency of the office staff and New York Eye and Ear made the surgery less stressful. I was referred to Dr. Gentile once or twice in the past two years by my primary ophthalmologist for a consult. So I knew of him when I recently had a sudden, major emergency with my eyes. I woke up one morning with my vision severely occluded. The condition got worse daily for a week or so. I could not read anything in print (including things like addresses on envelopes or bank account numbers and so forth), and within a few days everything outdoors was beginning to look fuzzy. It seemed that I might be going blind. I made an appointment with Dr. Gentile. Almost instantly, he knew what the problem was, some kind of "stroke" affecting a blood vessel leading to my retina. He said there were several possible treatments. He said invasive surgery was too likely to result in damage to the blood vessel, but he would try a procedure that might work. He couldn't be sure. He gave me an injection and told me if there was improvement, I would probably notice it over a period of 24 hours. I came back two days later and Dr. Gentile was almost ecstatic about the results. The swelling in the critical artery had gone down and the blockage had eased. Within a day or two, my vision was restored. It seemed like a miracle. Dr. Gentile is at top of his game, the best retinal specialist, I have been told, in New York. Yet -- one might not expect it -- he is a self-effacing and modest in demeanor, professional and efficient, yet friendly and reassuring. He is the kind of doctor I admire the most, one who is not off-putting, who is personable, and who inspires total confidence because of his outstanding knowledge and skill, which is obvious even to someone with no medical expertise. I have been back for follow up appointments and treatments. Dr. Gentile says I must be watched carefully for a possible recurrence. His office is pleasing to visit, from everything to the waiting room to the examining rooms. I cannot say enough good words about the staff, from the receptionists to the technicians. The first day I was there I had to go to the eighth floor to be prepped for my treatment. A middle aged male technician injected dye into my eye, took images, and so forth. He was so nice and polite. The same goes for the woman technician who gave me a preliminary exam last week. She exhibited competence and professionalism. Dr. Gentile deserves TEN STARS. He is THE BEST. I was shocked, when I was diagnosed with an old retinal detachment in the right eye. I consulted about FIVE doctors locally in NJ but was not satisfied. Some suggested Vitrectomy while others voted for full Scleral Buckle. Since I was myopic, a full scleral buckle would have increased my eye glass prescription while Vitrectomy demanded lot of post surgery precautions My search for a good retinal surgeon ended, when I somehow reached his office in Dec 2014. He was patient, kind & answered all my queries. He was very professional in his diagnosis & treatment. Dr. Gentile suggested that Vitrectomy was not suitable for me, since I had a fully attached Vitreous jelly & there was no point in replacing it with a Gas bubble for retina to be attached. Also instead of full scleral buckle, he opted for a partial buckle which would attach my retina but would not allow my eye glass prescription to increase, since the partial buckle is local & doesn't change the shape of the eye I got my Surgery dates in Jan 2015. It was so smooth since Dr. Gentile, his office & New York Eye & Ear Infirmary were a one stop shop for all tests & treatments. My surgery was successful & the retina was fully attached. Dr. also treated my left eye with Laser to cure some weak spots on the retina. I was back to work within two weeks. After a month & a half, my vision was restored to normal without any change in my eye glass prescription I thank & appreciate Dr. Ronald Gentile & his eye care team. This doctor represents the best of all physicians. My wife had a detached retina. At first we went locally in NJ and was told by the ophthalmologist that it was too severe and would try to regain for her eyesight. Through research we found Dr. Gentile the day before initial operation by NJ doctor. We went with Dr. Gentile and he rescheduled his operating schedule to do the procedure the next day. Dr. Robert Ritch of the New York Eye & Ear infirmary blinded my wife during an operation, he then told her to get a seeing eye dog and transferred us to Dr. Gentile. Dr. Gentile couldn't restore my wife's sight, but he did restore our faith in Doctors. Dr. Gentile is a great doctor, but he also genuinely cares for his patients. He performed several operations on my wife, none of which restored her sight, but he did restore her eye to functional condition. His caring and compassion helped us survive a very dark period after we were dumped by Dr. Ritch for not living up to his expectations. I highly recommend Dr. Gentile for his skills, but also for his humanism which is sorely lacking in so many doctors today. read more

After a central retinal vein occlusion and listening to another doctor who said there was nothing to be done, I was down to barely seeing several fingers in front of my left eye. Within a couple of months Dr Gentile got me back to 20-40 sight with a relatively new program. He tells it like it is and saved my sight. But be prepared to wait sometimes 2-3 hours to see him if going in the afternoon. In my case, worth the wait. For emergencies they'll get you right in. read more

About a year and a half ago, the floaters and flashes In my left eye started to get excessive. Not only that, I started seeing double images, especially at night. My retina had been detached for a long time and because I had overlooked it so long, surgery was necessary right away. (My tendency is always to believe that symptoms are in my imagination.) Thankfully, I found Dr. Gentile. Not only did the operation repair my left eye completely, but I have 20/20 vision back...something I hadn't had in about 40 years! I have been diagnosed with macula degeneration and have seen many opthamologists over the past twenty years. There is disagreement as to my specific diagnosis. Dr Gentile did explain to me why there was disagreement but refused to let me record his explanation. I have recorded the last three doctors. This is very helpful for future reference and because they use medical language I am not familiar with. It is helpful in sharing with my wife (a doctor) and other friends and relatives. I was referred to Dr Gentile after being diagnosed with a macular hole in Jan 2018. Dr Gentile first treated my macular hole with a drop treatment that works in closing the holes in 10% of his patients. I was happy to try a non invasive program. After six weeks it was determined that the drops were not working and that surgery was required to close the hole. Dr Gentile performed the surgery on March 22nd. Almost five months after surgery and my eye is healing beautifully. My Vision has improved to 20-25 minus 2 in my surgically repaired eye. At my last visit Dr Gentile said that I should keep on doing whatever it is I'm doing as it is working. I credit Dr Gentile and God working through him for my miraculous recovery. I was referred to him when the scleral buckle around my right eye, installed by another surgeon 3 years previously, became exposed & infected. I have been his patient ever since. Dr. Gentile is fantastic. He is an excellent clinician and a joy to visit with. BUT, the office receptionist in the NY Eye and Ear office is just plain curt and off-putting. When trying to make an appointment with Dr. Gentile for a new optical prescription, I was told that the optical technician only makes appointments on Thursdays, yet Dr Gentile does not see patients on Thursdays. So, in order to get a new prescription, two visits are required. While attempting to unravel the complexities of scheduling my visit in order to come away with a prescription for glasses, I innocently called the receptionist "dear". She immediately snapped at me with a "Don't call me dear"! And then she told me that if I wanted a prescription, I should go to any optical service! Otherwise, come back twice. Those were my options. I made one appointment to see Dr. Gentile, and "IF I AM LUCKY THE TECHNICIAN MAY HAVE TIME TO REFRACT ME FOR GLASSES", stated the receptionist. I'm a recently retired Assistant Dean for Medical Education and I know my way around health care. I have relocated just a few months ago to Austin, TX after 65 years living in New York and wish to return to NYC for my healthcare because I love my physicians. To experience this sort of treatment however is really unnecessary and unprofessional. This would NEVER happen in Austin. People are nice here! I went ahead and made my appointment and plan to discuss this with Dr. Gentile.
