Customer service is non existent and when you are at the cash they are so rude and basically told me to go to Home Depot

I was trying to buy Canadian. We don't have many choices when it comes to building supplies. I went to RONA because they used to be Canadian (owned by an investment firm out of New York) I visited the store to purchase paint for doors and trim, as I was looking for better quality paint than what I had. A clerk assisted me by showing me three options, and I chose the mid-range paint priced at $48, as it fit my budget. While the paint was being shaken, I noticed a sign advertising 30% off SICO Endurance, which would have been a better-quality paint at a lower price of $42. I asked the clerk if I could switch to the discounted paint, and she called the manager. To my surprise, the manager refused to allow the switch because tint was added to make it white. I ended up purchasing the original paint because I needed it for my project, but I left the store feeling disappointed and frustrated. This experience has made me reconsider where I shop for my renovation needs. When I got home I sent in a complaint and they offered me 10% off my next purchase. I felt it to be an insult. So I phoned customer service, they offered me a $10 gift card. That at least brought the cost down to the sale price. But I'm still stuck with crappy paint. You would think customer service would be more of a priority during these tense political and economic times. read more

Would not recommend. I found online that they had in stock 40 pieces of live edge wood, treated and varnished for $100 each. Upon traveling there they told me that I have to order them online as it's not in stock. (So I traveled for no reason, and could not inspect what I will buy/get). So I ordered it online and it took 1 week to get ready. When I went to pick it up, it looked decent and the edges were warped in cart-board so I could not inspect the edges. To my unpleasant surprise, when I unwrapped it home, it was bummed on the good side of the edge and had a deep scratch 3-4cm long, 0.4cm deep and 1cm thick. Upon contacting to ask for a partial refund or replacement, with the hopes that we will figure a fair solution and that I would avoid wait an other weak to get an other piece that I do not know if it would be good or not, they offered me 10% discount ($10). Upon negotiating their final offer was 15%. Returning it would cost me time and gas plus I would have to wait an other weak to get a new unknown quality piece or I would have to do further research to find it from someone else so I decided to accept their messed up offer. I will not buy anything again from them due to that. I feel that this is ridiculous as no-one would like a broken $100 piece of wood that would reduce the quality of their project. read more

Shop here all the time with no issues. Tonight was the worst service. I had a question for the lumber department. Albeit I came in 15 min before close, I don't want to be told by the clerk that I better hurry up as they are going to close. 15 min is a damn lifetime. I proceeded to drive through into the lumber yard and the two boys paid no attention to me as I cane in. I sat in the car waiting as no instructions were given me in what to do when I got in there. I then got out of the car to look at the dimensional lumber sizes for myself. The two guys then chatted to themselves for 5 min while the clock ran down and right at 7:55pm close the door behind my car but didn't say anything to me. Not they were closing, not if I had a question, not what time they were open tomorrow...nothing. The then proceeded to partially close the bay in front of my car. So I guess that mean they were closed. I drove away as both guys were at the front bay waiting for me and as I drove through they looked away. I know this is location is under private owners and not part of the chain so I like supporting it. But all this neglect for 15 min...ya I'm fired up. Figure it out boys....you made me feel very unwelcome in that 15 min before close. read more

I hate this place and will never be returning again. Full of arrogant men, never have enough cashiers open. Men barging ahead to cash ignoring the one central lineup and then saying, "I don't know what she's trying to say" when advised to go to the back of the line. Every time I come here I am being humiliated. I ask what I want to do andI always get a response "why would you want to do this " I was asking if I can connect a miter saw to a vacuum and then guess what the response was! "Why would you want to do this"- we cant help you.and after paying in the drive through I was stopped again for 10min for inspection of my trunk. Felt like a thief again. It's a place with several old man, grumpy and "old school" if want to do something your way they will tell you it's not the way it should've done and will rant and then tell you- we can't help you unless you names product you want..... Off the main road, unless you know the main roads like me lol. If you're ripping 60km here, it's easy to miss. Near the tracks. One of the older locations, maximizes its space with an upstairs, for bbqs. Kicking some tires on track lighting here, surprisingly a decent selection. Not as much as Home Depot or Canadian Tire but some good designs here. read more

What a horrible place to shop.... It feels like a complete do it all by yourself store. There is ZERO help at this location -the exception is the one older guy that works behind the counter in the east end of building -apparently, he went to some upper level, super secret customer service course where they taught him not to be afraid to step out from behind the counter to help out. Today I went there for wire... I walked up and down every electrical aisle several times. Never had anyone ask me if they can help me, the two employees that were flapping their gums to each other about whatever was way more important that any customer service. I went to the front cashiers at the store to request help in the electric section, I heard the page as I walked back to the electrical section, but NO ONE showed up! What The actual!... What does it take to get help in this store? Two days prior, I am in the same store looking at hardware with a friend, we agree that if only this piece of metal had one more bend in it it would be perfect for our needs. So we took four metal pieces and as we pondered where to get a vice to bend these metal pieces, I spy a slit in the RONA shelving that might do the trick. We inserted the metal into RONA's shelving and with four long minutes of heaved and groaning we actually bent the metal into the desired shape. One down, just three more to go. Do you think anyone wearing a RONA vest asked what we doing or if they could help? Nope, you're on your own! We took our severely bent (not too straight) pieces of metal to the cashier to pay (I have no idea why we even pay anymore), and of course the cashier doesn't bat an eye or even comment about ringing up four badly bent pieces of metal. Back to today, as I was checking out I told the cashier I hated this store because your own your own as no one is hired to help customers. I told his to pass this information on to the manager. I doubt he'll even do that, because that would mean leaving the safety of his cash register. Next time I go there I swear I am going to gas up a chainsaw and start turning big lumber into small lumber. After all it's a free-for all, no one cares. I used to like RONA because they allow dogs in their stores (I don't have a dog, but like to see them because the alternative is leaving them in sweltering cars), but I think it's time to make the switch to dog-less Home Depot. I went to the store to get a BBQ which the website said was in stock. Ignored as we looked around as the two workers hung out chatting behind the counter. I approached one of the guys for help, turns out he was JK Simmons doppelgänger from the movie Whiplash - and I must've just ruined his day. He was not impressed I wanted to buy something. Heaven forbid he has to look it up on the system. "we don't have it". And he doesn't bother helping us find a different one so we left. As I left I smile and say "thank-you" to which he glares at me and responds with "ok". Ended up going to the other Rona in North Vancouver where Wendy helped us. She was very helpful and went out of her way to ensure we got what we needed. I'd recommend going that route. read more

I consider myself fairly handy and seldom need help when doing a little DIY. But there are still times when I go to that big box hardware store and I need a little help to find something or ask a question. At Rona it always seems I need help to find help. You should not have spend more than 5 minutes looking for staff and only to queue up behind others just to answer a simple question. Come on where are the staff? When you do get your turn they always seen helpful. If they had a few more bodies it could be a pleasant place to shop. At the checkout I asked where is the bike rack? This location is on a bike route. There isn't one she replied. I pointed out it would be helpful as there were a couple of bikes chained to the gas meters. Ka-boom. Small changes can make a huge difference. read more

This review is specific to the Rona BH Allen store on West 1st St in North Vancouver. I belonged to their propane tank exchange program. I came home and a couple of weeks after I used the tank. The knob was crooked and the output was very low. I put on another tank and it worked without issue. I went back to this Rona spoke to a clerk who referred me the the shift Manager, Ben. I told him all I want to do is exchange a full tank with another full tank. Oh, not without a receipt. What? I explained to Ben my history with the store. I have purchased almost $20,0000 in outdoor furniture over the last 5 years. That didn't matter. He wanted at receipt for $28 worth of propane. Crazy! Well, Home Depot is 5 minutes from this Rona. HD has a new quality customer. Amazing how a loyal customer of 8 years is treated. It only takes one very bad experience to lose a loyal customer. read more

One star for existing conveniently down the street from our house. One star for letting our dog come in. No stars for lack of organization, management, and customer service. The thing that ticks me off the most is the labelling of the prices, or lack there of - it's like a game minus the fun trying to figure out what price lines up with some item on the shelf. There's been so many times we've ended up at the till to be wrongsticker-shocked and left unhappy shoppers. I appreciate that they have a garden centre with plants in the spring/summer, but lack of organic options bums me out. We'll keep going there so that we don't have to drive places, but man let's pick it up management, it's 2014 and competition should be fierce. read more

Love supporting Canadian companies but this Rona is independently operated and have rude and incompetent staff working there. Prices always differ from the other Rona stores, folks don't know how to look up items, and they talk down to you making it sound like you the Krazy one. Do not waste your time at this location, it's worth it driving to the 3rd store or making the trip to Park royal - Home Depot. Stay far away .... far away!! read more

I asked one person a question, who pointed at someone else and said "go ask him" and when I did, the second guy said "go ask someone in seasonal." Rona stands for" Repeat Orders Never Again" with the Idea to support local business as much as possible, I have been a customer at Rona for the last 20 + years. I have put up with bad customer service and higher prices due to their convenient location for me. But this last episode was the ultimate in bad customer service. Sunday 31st May I bought 4 Deck Chairs, besides other items, at the cost of $ 403.00 including Tax. My wife hated them and we never even opened the packaging. The next day Monday June 1st I returned the chairs, only to be told the credit card charge could not be reversed as I did not have the original and due to that they could only issue a gift card. On Monday afternoon I unpacked the other items I had bought at the same time, only to find the original receipt in the bottom of the bag. The cashier obviously put it in there when packing up my items. Another visit to Rona. On producing all the evidence, I was now told that it was Rona's policy not to process a refund once a gift card had been issued. Bad Luck Chum....... We are constantly been told to support local business whenever possible. However when comparing Rona's lack of customer service with Home Depot in Park Royal, where a refund is processed just by swiping your credit card within 30 seconds, I herewith categorically state that I will never set foot in that establishment again even if they had the last nail in town. To add insult to injury. When discussing this horrible experience with a friend, I was told that the identical chairs were available at Costco for $49.00 each versus the $ 89.00. Beware of buying tools. The guy at the key counter looks after tools and will tell you they do not sell any parts and you need to go to Westcoast Tools in Burnaby. Eg filters for belt sanders are not stocked. Why are Canadian retailers so belligerent and not customer focused? I agree with the other reviewers: it is hard to find anyone to ask for directions. It is understaffed. However, I can usually find most of the things I need, so I keep coming back, but never happily. Update: November 2013: I came in looking for a specialty floodlight. I found it in a locked case in the lighting section. I went to the information desk and cashier area, where 4 bored employees were doing nothing, early on a Sunday. They told me to go to the infamous key cutting desk and wait for the guy to open the cabinet (which is far from the key cutting desk). One other guy was waiting in front of me, upset already that no-one was there. After 5 minutes I went back to the info desk and asked again to open the case. They said they could do nothing, as they didn't have a key. So this place revolves around the one key cutting man, while 4 cashiers hang around the checkout, unable to help the customers who can't access the things they are looking for. It is no secret why the cashiers have nothing to do. No-one is buying. This is by far the worst business we have on the North Shore. Post script - I drove further east to the Rona near Park & Tilford. I went to the lighting section, and while I was looking in the shelves, someone asked if I needed help and found the bulb immediately (and it was not in a locked case). Awful customer service. We went in to buy a lawnmower. Thought it'd be nice to shop local and support Canadian companies. There was no one in sight to assist. Finally tracked a guy down who couldn't be less knowledgeable or interested to help. The mower we wanted only had the floor model left. The employee did not try to find a box or manual for a warranty/instructions and manager wouldn't give a discount for the lack of one. We left disappointed and headed to Home Depot. read more

Rude manager. I had an online order which was defective so I took it to this store to return . This Rona is closest to my home. He asked me to take it to another store to return. I said I bought it from Rona and here is Rona why I have to go somewhere else. He said because we are family operated and also we don't know how to return. He said the other store is just 10 min away, go there. His name was Mark which I'm not sure if he gave me his real name. What a horrible customer service. In a word "Horrible" The lack of in stock merchandise with bare racks, other products are in empty spaces so you don't know the price of which item, no customer service what so ever....No acknowledgement that you exist and you are lucky if you can find a Rona person in that store willing and able to help you! They treat their customers like you are a pain in their arse. They guy upstairs in the Patio furniture area won't even look at you, let alone greet you or ask you if you are looking for something....The phone rang upstairs and he didn't bother to answer it or the store page that followed...I just left. Do yourself a big favour and do not spend your money in that store...pure dissatisfaction and a real lack of interest for your business. I've experienced some of the worst costumer service in my life at this North Vancouver location. I recently bought a gas power wash unit from this store. I took it home and used it once, during that time the unit leaked gas all over the place and was clearly not working the way a new unit should. I called the store and spoke to the manager about the possibility of returning it or exchanging it and he said bring it in. After taking it to the store and expecting an exchange or a refund, they told me they will not exchange or return the unit, however they will handle the repair. I told them I do not want a repaired unit I want a new unit. (It had been 3 days since I bought the power washer) Unfortunately, the manager kept hiding behind the store policy and refused to address my concerns. He told me the repair would take 1-2 days. After seeing I had no alternative I agreed to the repair. After 2 days of not hearing back from the manager I called to follow up. After he spoke with the repair shop, he proceeded to tell me that they can not find a leak and now the power wash will not even start. I told him, given this situation he needs to refund my money, to which he still refuses. Sadly, Rona has lost me as a customer for life unless this situation can be resolved to my satisfaction. I want a refund and nothing short of that. By the way I still do not have the unit back or an eta or even an indication of what is wrong. This store gives Rona a bad name. Apparently they are not a "real" Rona and do not associate with the other Rona's..issues with returns, cannot ship to another Rona, etc. Note other review about inconsistent prices to other Rona's. They also do not stand behind what their employees tell you, so beware that they cannot be trusted. Note that they do not put their return policy on receipts, like other Rona's do. Ghost town! Sure, it's a hardware store like all of them, but what really sets this one apart is the astonishing lack of employees. I once walked the entire length of that store, and back again, calling out "Hello! Hello?" and saw nary a shopkeeper nor a customer service technician. The store was mine and mine alone, so i renamed it "Itterbits" and welcomed my first customer some minutes later, who bought nothing and who slapped me for wishing to inspect her bag. I suspect that if there were an atmosphere of readily available advice and parts directions, rather than a single old plumber with eight people all hoping to make eye contact with him so they know they are still alive, and to squeeze in a quick " where's the shit i want?", then they could draw in the crowds they claim they need to justify such a radical attention to details. read more

Staff and floor managers are good, product selection and pricing are decent. Upper management and ownership, not so much. This is a private franchise. I've done work for the store manager, who's parents own the store. He is a difficult and mean spirited person. Having talked with some of the staff in the past, they seem to agree. He's lucky his parents own the store. He wouldn't make it working at any other retailer. read more

Agree with the other reviewers. It's not a bad location, price, selection but it's not for service or booking trades. We had a positive experience getting keys cut & buying a hot tub. One of top worst experiences trying to book a service (build a drywall box around a pipe) from their HomePro. High quote, but its Rona so it will run smoothly right? Not in my experience. Took weeks to find a mutually available date. But day before it was cancelled due to illness. Rona will send someone else right? No. When he did come on another date, it was late and telling me it would take several days, also grade-school complaining about customer in line before them that morning to pick up supplies. When I phoned Rona that this just wouldn't do, the trades walked out leaving key & place unlocked and not talking to me! Super unprofessional. However, Rona did step up and give me my money back, with which I'm satisfied. But huge delay and an interest free loan to Rona. I then got a recommendation from a friend for excellent contractor who checked out on BBB and WCB sites. I had to wait for his availability but he showed up, took one day and charged a third of the price. Just say no to any service from here- go to Home Depot in West Van where they are professional, organized and communicate well (I used them 3 times, but not recently)!
