Went to a small pizzeria in Dunellen Nj today to try out a slice of pizza . Rome pizza is a small but very clean pizzeria. Parking is on the street only and meter parking quarters only ! . They don't have a Hugh menu mostly pizzas. I order two slice to go they were fresh and tasty for a standard type pizzeria. They had a lot of chesse on the pizza more then any other pizzeria would put on . It's a cash only spot . It was ran by the two owners mom and son . They have been in business for over 51 years . A classic pizza place!!! We were walking back to the car after a few hours at The Break Arcade next door and saw this place. My little guy loves pizza so we stopped in for a slice. I love seeing the old school pizza place and having a little chat with the woman behind the counter finding out that they have been there over 50 years. Thats amazing!!! Any pizza place that has letter boards as menus is good in my book. The modern place can keep their damn flatscreen menus. I did feel a little bad as the place was practically empty on a Saturday afternoon. We sat and ordered 2 slices and a drink, which is a special for $4.50. The pizza was really good...Nothing beats good ole Pizzaria pizza. The prices were very fair about $2 per slice and even 20oz sodas about $1.85. I would recommend this place to everyone. But there's a bank right across the street and another bank 2 doors down (with an outside ATM) to get cash. My 5 stars is for their consistently great pizza and Calzones. Pizza places shouldn't be about the decor, or the ambiance. It's about one thing: great consistent pizza that tastes excellent. You shouldn't pay $20 or more for a pizza with toppings, or a large cheese pizza that costs $18.00 or more The pizza at Rome is made every day from scratch by the Owners. It's not a high priced pizza maker from Naples at $25 a pie. It's not a bunch of kids who have no idea what old school pizza should taste like. I order a medium cheese pizza a little well done and a large meat lovers pizza (pepperoni, meatballs, sausage). Sometimes I order the white pizza with mozzarella/ricotta. All are delicious. The medium cheese and large meat lovers pizza cost me less than $30.00. And they are worth more. The meat lovers pizza is filled with meat and three to four slices for me at 6ft 225 lbs is a meal! The place takes you back in time to pizza places from the 1970's. It's not dressed to impress, and I like it that way. It's clean, simple and has lots of tables and there's no rush to eat. The pizza is the best in Central NJ. I come from 20 minutes away and pass alot of mediocre pizza joints for these pies. I call them while I'm driving over, and when I get there 20 minutes later my pizzas are ready and waiting for me. My wallet and my stomach are very happy after having their pizza. And their Calzones are awesome too. If you want decor, and a guy from Naples making you pizza that costs $20 or more a pie and doesn't taste like old school pizza, please keep going to those places so I can simply come into Rome Pizza, grab a table and have not have to wait to have comparable as well as better pizza at half the price. We go to a pizzeria once a week and decided with all the good reviews to try Rome Pizza in Dunellen. I grew up in Brooklyn and Brooklyn still has the best pizza and bagels fuhgeddaboudit. Any way, I went with the sicilian and my better half tried a regular slice with sausage. MEH is the right word for it. Crust was nice and cheese had flavor but the sauce...the sauce..it was red and it was wet, and that's it. Maybe someone forgot the seasoning tonight. It's too far out of our way to give it a second chance so for now 2 stars is all I can give. read more

You go inside and you definitely get that neighborhood feel, its a mother and son operation and you got locals watching the news on tv as some wait for their takeout order. I can vouch for the "localness" when another patron comes in and chats with one who was sitting by the counter. The atmosphere is pleasant and so is the pizza. Pizza is not on my list of quests, though I have tried brooklyn pizza, which as a reputation all its own. The pizza is thin slice, the flavor with some variance, I did notice some herbs on it maybe oregano? But it did have a character and I would be more than willing to stop by again or order a whole pie for takeout. This write up made me think of this question? How would you describe your ideal slice of pizza? In my experience, they have been slightly salty, sour, and somewhere in the middle when it comes to taste and Im a fan of texture, when the pizza is thin slice (New York style?) not salty or sour and the dough layer has a slight crisp to it when you fold it NOT thin crust mind you..Let me know what you think in your comments? I can't believe this place doesn't have more reviews. C'mon people! We arrived at the town of Dunellen, NJ, exhausted from a 3-hour journey from New York City and hungry for some good food. Rome Pizza was one of the only options as far as we could see on the street we were on so we went in and decided to give it a try. What we got was pure amazement. We each ordered two pizzas, topped with pepperoni, sausage, onions and garlic. The garlic and onions were fresh and nearly raw on the pizza, so at first I was worried it would taste bad. However, the nearly raw ingredients were what made the pizza truly great - every bite was a bite of freshness and chewiness. It was unlike any other pizza I've ever had before. This place has a very homey, mom and pop type feel, which I truly appreciate. It seems like the owners know a lot of the customers who come in. It's great to witness a small town feel, especially when you're coming from somewhere as busy as New York City. I truly loved Rome Pizza and I will definitely visit again should I ever find myself in Dunellen, NJ again in the future. read more

Honestly, this place is over-hyped. I went with the Rome Special, sausage, pepper and onion. The slices were floppy in the middle and all the cheese and topping slid off. The distribution of the sausage was bad, mostly in the middle where the topping were falling off. That said, the actual taste was pretty good. A shame they can't figure out how to make the crust hold up to the toppings. For everyone touting this as the "best pizza in central NJ"... There is better 15 minutes away, closer to my house.
