Awesome! It's a word I don't think I've used in more than 1000 reviews, but Roka Hula exceeds all expectations. Visiting on their second night of business we encountered near perfection. I had assumed this would be an experience aimed at the tourist and convention business, like its associated restaurant Voodo Bayou (you check in at their reception desk), which is good, but not earthshaking. But Roka Hula is not just an experience, but also an amazing cocktail/tiki bar and a superb sushi restaurant. The first thing you notice, as with any Tiki bar, is the ambiance. From the creative entry (I won't spoil the experience) to the overall decor and vibe, this is a great space--calming, mysterious, and exciting all at once. The cocktail menu is expansive, and the three drinks I tried were all home runs. The gin and ginger Psycho Starlett and the complex and tart Saigon Suzy both went well with the sushi. And the Banana Old Fashioned (a complex mix of rums and a brulee'd banana syrup) is possibly my favorite cocktail of all time, a great way to end the meal. As expected with a Tiki bar, the wine list is very limited, but contains four interesting selections. The other star here is the sushi. I wasn't expecting much, because food at a tiki bar is usually an afterthought, or cliched. But this place is serving some of the best quality fish in town, and some of the most creative sushi. The Hamachi Tiradito and Salmon Sashimi were both excellent starters. While not inexpensive, the portions and quality justified the cost. Smoky Spicy Tuna Roll was one of the most creative sushi dishes I've had. Sure, we've all had dishes served under a smoked dome, but the hickory and apple smoke here was a whole other level. The Buffalo Beef on Weck Roll was also really creative, with tenderloin wrapped in carpaccio and coated in caraway seeds. Service provided by Thyas and the accompanying staff was perfect. I am not often this surprised by a restaurant, especially in a tourist area, but Roak Hula blew me away. read more

GORGEOUS BAR! To enter, you come in to Voodoo Bayou then sit in some chairs after seeing the hostess. The wall is going to VERY VERY SLOWLY turn and boom you are in Roka Hula now :) The decor blew my mind from how perfectly set up everything is. The staff was extremely friendly and had great suggestions. I love that they have metal straws here! Personally I think the prices are outrageous here. I've been to other speakeasies with better drinks and food that cost less. My boyfriend and I got 2 drinks each and two nigiri... the total came out to $110+ (there is an automatic 18% gratuity). The best drink we had was the Bump & Grind for sure! The other 3 drinks we had were pretty average and not really worth $18-20. Maybe more like $12-15. It was a solid 3 star experience because it was super expensive for the majority of our food and bev tasting average BUT THE DECOR AND THE STAFF WERE INCREDIBLE. read more

Okay the aesthetic of this location is STUNNING. Voodoo Bayou was very cool, but stepping into Roka Hula was like entering a whole other planet. The entrance to the speakeasy is such a fun and unexpected experience. The decor is top notch. The tiki cocktails were really good - I only had one since I was driving but wanted to try out more! My friend and I shared a few dishes and I think the smoked eel roll really stole the show. The shrimp was just okay and the gyoza was what you would expect. However, the pork belly rice was also fantastic - the pork belly was super fatty and crispy. We also really liked the mochi dessert. It is definitely pricy - we collectively spent almost $200 on a few shared apps, 2 drinks, and a dessert plus tip. However it's a really fun location for a girls night, date night, or special occasion. I will definitely be back. read more

Smokey spicy tuna had a great presentation but it was underwhelming as a roll. The branzino on the other hand wow. Hubby really liked the buffalo beef roll. We tried the Kobe omakase and it was yummy although I'd have gone for a bit more lobster and skipped the gold. The tuna carpaccio was amazing don't skip it we could have done without the rainbow roll as well it was fine but not wow. The drinks were all on point and delicious. Staff also did a great job despite being extremely busy. This was a great date night and I would highly recommend for a night out. read more

After we went to Voodoo Bayou, we decided to go to the speakeasy called Roka Hula. I loved the aesthetic of this speak easy. When we entered, we sat down and the wall turned and we were in the bar. This is the second visit for me and probably my last. My initial visit was a disaster. We had reservations for 9:45pm, sat at the bar and at 10:15 after not being greeted by one bartender, I was told the bar closed at 10pm! I discussed this issue with the Manager and the owner and given it was Roka Hula's initial opening weeks I decided to wait 4 months before trying it again. The service was very good from Ashley, but the drinks are way too expensive, and the ambiance of the place wears out its welcome after the initial visit. It doesn't feel like a real speakeasy as the theme is more tropical than a Prohibition setting. My one guest went through four specialty drink selection possibilities, but none were available at 10:45pm. He settled on a Cosmopolitan. I asked if any of the specialty drinks had vodka, which they did not. Ashley recommended a drink for me, but I didn't like the taste at all. Ashley was good about replacing it with a Cosmopolitan at no charge. That was definitely a nice touch. Total price for 4 drinks and the 18 percent automatic gratuity came just under $100. For me, I don't see the third time being the "charm". read more

A Hidden Gem Worth Discovering! Walked into Roka Hula on a Monday night without a reservation and was seated right away, already a win. The entrance through the secret rotating door was such a fun, speakeasy-style surprise. The vibe and decor are top-tier: moody, stylish, and totally transportive. The food? To die for. Our table ordered the pork belly fried rice, dumplings, Korean short rib gyoza, and the short rib baps, every single dish was a hit. Roka Hula is definitely a spot you can miss if you don't know where to look! We've been to VB a couple times and didn't know about it til we were getting ready to leave! I don't know if I can find the words to explain what a great experience I had here last night, but I'm gonna try! Roka Hula is inside of Voodoo Bayou, but GETTING inside is part of the fun. No passwords for this speakeasy, just a set of chairs on a revolving platform that spins you into the venue. Once in we were immediately greeted by our server, who explained the menu and the drinks. The drinks are all super tasty, though not overly strong, and if I had any pet peeve it would be that they use way too crushed ice, it clogs their thin metal drink straws, other than that though, everything was spot on. Some cocktails come in fun decorative glasses, some come with props, and one even got lit on fire!! The food was equally top notch. We had so much food! We ate pan fried gyoza, ginger tuna crispy rice, pork belly fried rice, foie gras nigiri, their smoky spicy tuna roll, and the best rainbow roll I've ever tried. Balls of Glory mochi donuts and Vetnamese coffee affogato were both equally amazing. Truly the best meal I've had in a while. I visited the spot while dining at voodoo Bayou when they first opened we were not able to try any other drinks, but this is the perfect time we came for a nightcap and were able to try some of their signature cocktails. They are very eccentric in flavor profiles each drink takes you on a different journey, I kind of like my drink straight to the point, but if you're in a mood to be surprised and like to be excited about different flavors and your drinks, this is a perfect bar for you. The bartenders were super helpful with finding my flavor profile, and were very helpful with figuring out what we liked. I would love to come back. Drink is a little sweet to my liking but over you just have to do it once! We got the following: - hamachi tiradito, delicious 9/10 - lobster roll 9/10 - buffalo beef roll, 3/10 didn't really care for this roll, a couple of them was kinda chewy and had fat in it - cucumber salad 10/10 so good! Tofu croutons! Refreshing - unagi roll 10/10 love this flavor - Vietnamese baos 9/10, soft, excellent flavors - Vietnamese coffee affogato 10/10 so fun and so good!! We made a reservation for my 40th birthday. There was a snafu with ordering tea time, which they were apologetic and we were really fine with it. But then, we ordered an appetizer and some food. We planned to course, enjoy and really take our time having a special night. All our food came minutes after ordering it on a tiny table. All of it. We couldn't eat it all that fast. Frankenstein monsters face sums up my thoughts on Roka Hula Greeting upon walking into Voodoo Bayou and told to have a seat where the wall rotates for entry. Waited 5-10 minutes in the seats before the hostess comes over and says "Actually we have a party ahead of you can you please get up and let them sit". Strike 1 Upon Entry you are met with a mutation of a tiki bar and I don't know.. a flower shop? Every table has individual lights where some are warm but some tables have them set to the overpowered super bright LED so those really took away from the ambiance. Strike 2 The drinks were decent but nothing super special as far as the recipes go. The drinkware they are served in was really the best thing about them. The food was pretty meh. Tuna crispy rice should actually be on crispy rice in my opinion and not on some mushy rice as was the case with my experience. I love going to speak easy's so I had to give this new spot a try. It's definitely a different vibe than a traditional speak easy bc it's more of a tiki bar theme. They have lots of fun drinks. I didn't order any food, but do want to come back for some of the sushi. My drink was fine- not bad, but not amazing. It did come in a super cute cup. The vibe is fun and different. The drinks were very good! The presentation of both the Tea-ki Time & Freaky Franky definitely drew us in and added to the experience. We tried a few different food options and all were delicious! Four stars for great service, beautiful decor, atmosphere, and a great time with my coworkers. The only reason I'm not giving it five stars because the drinks are EXTREMELY pricey. The specialty mugs are deceiving because they are very big, but they only fill the drink halfway, so you are not getting a full drink for the price. And the food is beyond pricey as well. It almost made me not want to order anything further beyond one drink, and I didn't. I also did not order food. But I knew that ahead of time. So if you know this going into the place, you are very well prepared. It is not cheap by any means- but the service is good, it is beautiful, and it's a one and done for me. The food here is DELICIOUS. The overall feel of the speak easy is great too. Definitely better for a date/conversations because it's a little quieter. My favorite dish was their Tuna Carpaccio, so delicious.
