Salisbury Farm - So many gorgeous gourds

We loved the free hayride that dropped us off at the pumpkin patch, and the highland cow was adorable. Corn maze was pretty steeply priced but the employees were really great to work with. On this sunny Autumn day, I just needed to get out and enjoy autumn in New England. I was thinking…read more'apples, I want some Macintosh apples'. So what did I do? I went on yelp and searched 'orchards'. Which lead me to Salisbury Farm. First of all, I know you all are thinking "Johnston?" This farm is right down the road from the Scituate art festival location. It's rural. This is not the Johnston I think of (sorry Johnston). Don't let the location dissuade you. It's lovely. A small store is located in a big old barn and sells gourds, pumpkins, soap, peppers, tomatoes, mums plus some merch, honey and more. Goats and a cow named Finlay (who I am obsessed with) are located just outside for everyone to enjoy. They also have some kid sized fun things to do right there by the barn. They also have a corn maze which I was interested in doing, but wasn't sure about, so I asked 'how big is your corn maze' and was told '5 acres.' What? Five acres? No way. I'm not sure how they measure that (I'm not a surveyor) but that sounded like a nice stretch of the legs and I was all in. We were given maps of the maze with our purchase, which is absolutely necessary. Without the map I have no idea how we would have gotten through. Honestly, we passed two women, going the wrong way, who said they had been in there for 45 minutes and couldn't find the way out. They did not follow the map. For all I know they are still in there. We spent about 30 minutes in the maze (I'm a good map reader) and then walked on over to the pumpkin patch. Most of the pumpkins are at the barn, but it was a nice walk and we passed fields of strawberries (out of season in October). In the Spring I'll check back for their strawberry harvest. The sunflowers are past their prime in October, but last month you could cut your own sunflowers and I bet they were gorgeous then. The maze is not an inexpensive experience, but it is something you only get to do in the Fall and it does support a local farm, so for me it was worth it and I had fun. The corn crop this year is having some difficulty (2024). Much of the maze is tall and conceals all as you would expect. Parts of the maze however are not dense and the farm has a sign up in that section with information about their plans to amend the fields for next years crop. There are a lot of signs throughout the maze: Jokes Emergency flags to wave if you are totally lost Four emergency exits Information about Halloween and the farm. There is also a raffle with your purchase so ask at the store about that. Two picnic tables are near the entrance/exit. If you have a group this could be your meeting place if you are separated or if you have little ones, you can hang out here while the bigger ones go through the maze. Bring snacks. Enjoy the day! I did get to buy myself some Macintosh apples (for those of you wondering). We were here on a week day, so it wasn't a full tilt, weekend extravaganza. I am thinking on the weekends it's a lot of family fun in the Autumn.

I am glad I had a chance to visit before Thanksgiving to stock up on some goodies! If you've been to Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, Four Town is kind of similar, although the rustic farmhouse-chic shop does not have a prepared foods counter. However, they more than make up for it with all the amazing vegetables and fruits grown onsite. I was very impressed with the Honeycrisp Apples and Butternut Squash, as well as their wide selection of house made jellies and salad dressings. In addition to Four Town's slate of offerings, they also showcase other local vendors such as Wrights Dairy Farm's milk and cakes and Venda Ravioli's frozen fresh pasta and sauces. Four Town also carries fresh flowers and greenery that is holiday-ready - Christmas Trees and decorative wreaths and evergreen garlands. The team is friendly and offers excellent assistance in recommendations and recipe ideas- everyone we interacted with was delightful. This is a great stop along the way to lunch or dinner in neighboring Warren or Bristol, and a lovely way to spend a weekend afternoon!

They have a farm stand that's open and their apple pie is amazing! Their veggies are fresh and well-priced, and they have a wide assortment of homemade jams, jellies, butters, pasta sauces, chocolates, and baked goods. Oh and homemade soap! I got some today and it smells amazing! It really was a blast. At night, it turns into "Scary Acres" and is a haunted hayride and corn maze which I've done three times over the years and it's a lot of fun! Excellent, takes at least an hour to get through, and long lines on weekends if you don't get VIP.

The lady on the phone didn't inform me they close at 4:00pm. I arrived at 4:05 only to have what I assume the same lady come out to the lot to tell me they had closed. I get out of work at 3:30 there's no way I could get there any sooner, I understand when a business is closed its closed, but a little heads up would have been much appreciated, especially since I told the woman I was on my way 15 minutes prior to closing. Thankfully Home depot had trees left I was able to get my tree set up. Very disappointed in the customer service, and communication. I don't think I'll be going back again next year, especially after the messy fall festival.. I don't know how you can have a menu up with everything being unavailable. Also the cooks were so slow I witnessed another lady complain only to have the chef stop cooking to argue with her.. not something I want my two year old to witness. Thanks but no thanks, I'll travel out of state to get the experience my family deserves, don't want to deal with cranky people who are miserable with their job.

The apples were great quality and were delicious to eat and bake with later in the week. We parked a little far out from the entrance based on how busy it was (Sunday afternoon), but it was an easy walk. A lot of the apples that were ready to be picked and of good quality were at the top of the trees. I wish they offered ladders or picker tools to allow people to get good apples that can't be reached otherwise. Also, they had run out of apple cider donuts, which was a shame. We got some apple cider and fresh raspberries to take home, which were also both delicious. I would definitely pick our own raspberries next year if we return. We would definitely go back for a fun Fall activity each year!

I thought the layout was easy to follow and very organized. The space across the orchard was truly maximized. Rows upon rows of beautiful apples waiting to be picked. This weekend 9/15, Honeycrisp, Cortland, Gala, Liberty and McIntosh were ready for picking. My wife and I are apple feinds eating 1 or 2 a day each. We had the fridge space for cold storage so we did 1/2 bushel which hits you @ $55. We ended up getting 24.5lbs of apples which came out to $2.24/lb. Not bad for fresh off the tree. If you don't eat as many apples, it is a little on the price side because here are the prices: 1/2 bushel ($55 = admission for 5) 1 peck ($35 = admission for 3) 1/2 peck ($17.50 = admission for 1) 1/4 peck ($15.00 I think? = 1 child 10 and under) Quantity is certainly your friend here. Not an issue for us because we eat so many (enjoyed over 4 while picking em.... They were good and couldn't help myself). We also grabbed some apple cider donuts on the way out. 1/2 dozen for $11 and they're the best apple cider donuts I've ever had. They actually tasted like apple and not just straight up sugar. Heat up in the microwave for 10 seconds before enjoying and chefs kiss. Will be back here in a month! Looking forward to some fuji and evercrisp!

There were 2 types of tickets: Goat Hiker (ages 10 and up walking a leashed goat) for $30.00 each or Hiker Only (NOT walking a leashed goat) for $20.00 each. I purchased 4 Goat Hiker tickets. We pulled into the gravel farm driveway and parked in the farm parking lot by the greenhouses. There was a sandwich board with directions to the goats and a table with a waiver to complete. Shortly after 10:30am, Aidan Simmons welcomed and prepared us by running through all the instructions and rules for the hike. We choose our own goat with a leash from the herd. The goats already knew the way and at some point I let go of the leash and let the goat walk by herself. We walked the flat grass paths around the farm fields and through the forest as Aidan shared the history of her farming, the story of her goats, and some great goat facts. She is very passionate and really cares about the goats well being. We finished our hike about 12:00pm. Aidan was very knowledgeable and it was fun to see the different goats personality and them grazing plants and leaves off the trees.
