Check in window and review request

I just checked into this motel after a long and tiring day of driving and it will definitely be my last. Upon checking in, I was polite and friendly as I can be. You're not allowed to enter the office but you have to go around the corner to a dirty, somewhat sketchy window with plexi glass. I rang the bell for service and a young woman appeared, she had an expression on her face as if I was interrupting something. I told her I was checking in and she rolled her eyes and walked away and came back a moment later and said in a sharp tone, "I need to see your credit card and your id." I slipped both cards through the window and she was gone for nearly ten minutes, just leaving me hanging outside standing in front of the window. She finally returns with a form I needed to sign. She said she needed two initials, a signature and my license plate number in which she just hand drew a line for me to put my license number. I accidentally put my license number where I was supposed to sign and as I was writing she literally snapped at me in a very rude, annoyed tone, "NO! YOUR SIGNATURE GOES THERE!" I was so put off and pissed by her attitude after this that I crossed the license number out and signed my name and slipped the form under the cracked window. She looked so annoyed and just handed me my room keys and told me my room number. No thank you, no enjoy your stay, no sorry to keep you waiting, just super rude unprofessionalism. As I walked away some man then came out of the office and stood there and watched me as I unloaded my car, it was very creepy and unsettling. Needless to say, out of all the hotels I've stayed at in Monterey over the last ten years, this one was terrible largely due to how nasty the staff are. It may be affordable but believe me it's not worth it. As a paying customer, people deserve far more courtesy and respect than that. In addition, the walls are paper thin, I heard a couple verbally fighting in the room next to me and the guests above me were stomping so loud when they walked that you could hear their every step above my head while trying to sleep. Also, tons of hair was found in my bathroom. FYI there is NO BREAKFAST! Don't let the website amenities fool you, there's a note stating it's "restricted" at the plexiglass window haha. For such dump of a motel, there sure is a lot of rigid rules. In my closing, I'll never return here again, I suggest going down the street to the fireplace inn or another place that actually appreciate your business and make you feel welcome to be there. Do better Rodeway Inn.

Clearly, this room is not ready for guests

I am a frequent traveler, and the service problems here went way beyond that of the disappointments of a cheap hotel. When I arrived at the front office was closed and I had to use a side night office for all of my communication which in itself is not a problem, but the front office seem to be storing construction supplies. Having a site under construction is also not a problem, but when I was placed in a hotel room that had no locking mechanism and when I asked to change, they said no begin my problems. My room was also in the midst of construction clearly missing facings and was filthy. I did not feel safe here. I left immediately and the hotel refused to refund me given my objections. The front office staff was rude and the manager was worse.

No one cares about this establishment. I stayed here out of a spontaneous decision to stay one more night in Monterey. For $100 night, I expected just a tad bit better than this. The stairs are falling apart outside to get to the upper level. Inside the room the carpet is coming up. The bathroom sink drain has a visible monster growing inside which inhibits proper draining and creates a pool for a while in the sink. The light fixture next to the bed is complete with sparking and popping. The beds are like sleeping on sharp coils that move like an accordion. The smoke alarm goes off if you take a shower and doesn't stop. Walls are paper thin you can hear the person yawn in the room next to you. Never ever will stay here again.

    Stains on the chair

BED BUGS and DIRTY! (Update below) It's basically my husbands and my fault for wanting to save a little on the hotel. Next time we'll for sure loosen the purse strings and stay somewhere nicer, cleaner and friendlier. The room was stuffy, a/c barely worked, room was dirty, shower was gross and we found dead bugs like roaches and moths. The key card was fickle to work with, the door had to be shoved shut. There were scratches on the walls, dents and scrapes where then second bed would be, what looked to be bodily fluids on the walls and of course bed bugs. I took a video of how bad the room was but it doesn't do it justice. There was no toilet paper and when we asked for one roll we never got it. The bed was broken. The box spring was the broken part and when we layer down we would gravitate towards the center. There was a desk chair but that was broken too. Just overall gross. Yes it's conveniently off the 1 Hwy but sooo not worth it stress of actually staying there. ****UPDATE**** About three days after we returned home, we noticed bug bites all up and down our arms. Finger tips to our shoulders. They were bed but bites. We didn't see any bed bugs but they were there. We did a deep clean of everything at home and thankfully none followed us. But stay away from this place

I called the Hotel to get directions. The person I spoke to, was hard to understand..I did not speak his dialect either. He hung up on me. I asked directions at another hotel. the room smelled like stale cigarettes. The floors , wall, doors were filthy. I wiped down all surfaces. The one fabric chair was also dirty. There was a blanket over the seat..check out was at 11am. I took down one load, returned for my final one, the card key did not work! I was locked out! I went to the office window where a young man asked if I forgot something..I told him I was loading my car. He said any stay past 11am would be considered the 2nd night stay..This was maybe 5 mins after 11! Got my key and finished loading my car.! This whole group needs to take Hospitality seminars..! I paid $225. for this!? Not " economy" prices as stated!

Smoke detector was covered with a bag. I've never felt so unsafe to stay anywhere.

This is the worst place I've ever stayed. The place was so dirty, the beds broken and carpet wasn't even vacuumed. This should not be a place allowed to be in business.

    Animal scratched furniture

DO NOT STAY HERE. I've had better hotel rooms in Haiti! Just pay the extra money to stay somewhere nice around here. The room is non-refundable and forget trying to ask for help from the management... I have dogs that are more well behaved. Disappointing is a massive understatement.

I should have gone to Yelp before staying here.Check-in was through a window due to "Covid." Almost no words, No mention of the WiFi. Just initial on x's and handed key. Clerk was completely in the dark, so could barely see them, in the middle of the day. Lumpy bed that was so wrinkled I hoped it was clean. Dirty sock on the floor. The room chair was so stained I never sat there. TV was on, but not on a channel when I came in, and did not work. Could not even turn it off. Finally unplugged it to go to bed. Light bulb burned out by bed and fixture was barely attached to the wall. Mold on walls in bathroom, shower curtain was half off. All metal fixtures were rusty, and a big moldy ball of hair in the tub drain to add a final gross finish.

All the stuff found under the bed and they did not belong to me.

The hotel offers a nightly happy hour and musical performances. During our visit we had the pleasure to discover a highly talented artist by the name of Adrea, who has the most incredible voice and presence. We were so impressed by her and were very fortunate that she performed both nights of our visit. It was a performance we would have gladly paid to see, she is a rising talent for sure. I can't state how exceptional our experience was to enjoy the music in such an elevated atmosphere, relaxing by the fire, enjoying the outstanding craft cocktails by their highly talented mixologist. Schooners is not to be missed, the food is as outstanding as the ocean view! A special mention to the superior customer care provided by Pracha, a guest service manager at the hotel, who is an absolute star. This was our second time staying in Monterey and I had been looking forward to staying at this hotel someday. It was everything I imagined and more! The service was exceptional from the valet to the bellhop to registration and restaurant staff. We are also IHG elite members and we were given a room upgrade with a thoughtful card and gift for our anniversary. Our room was facing the ocean on Cannery Row with a balcony. It was a very nice, spacious and clean room with alot of thoughtful attention like providing refillable water bottles, robes and an amazing Nespresso machine. There was also a wine bar and snacks available for purchase. The hotel had a wonderful scent throughout and we enjoyed walking through the ocean vibes staircase featuring a jellyfish. Definitely look for that! We loved having our anniversary dinner at The C Restaurant, but that will be another well earned review on it's own. However, we did have two negative experiences, one was that we waited a bit too long for our car at the valet once and there was an accidental spa charge on our receipt when checking out. I still gave them 5 stars because they rectified it right away and even removed the valet charge for us, which was much appreciated. I would love to come back to this hotel someday to bring my parents and we hope you love it too!!

Toddler Notes for the Hotel: [[ Pro's ]] 1.) The room we got on the 3rd floor corner was very spacious and had a ton of room. We were able to set up a pack and play and still had a generous amount of room left to walk around. 2.) Blackout shades and see-through shades for double coverage which keeps the room nice and dark at night. 3.) Location is great as it's super close to Cannery Row, lots of restaurants, and Monterey Bay Aquarium which was our ultimate destination. 4.) Parking Garage is free and decently sized and can fit a mid-size SUV with no issues. It will get tighter if you have a humongous full-SUV though (see pictures). [[ Con's ]] 1.) So Many STAIRS. Like legitimately, there are so many stairs. I took a ton of pictures to give you an idea. Stairs coming down from the elevator, stairs between floors, etc. This is not very young kid friendly when you have a stroller, a bunch of kid items, etc. I'm not sure I would stay here again due to the amount of stairs and inconvenience. 2.) Noise Level - If your kid is sensitive to noise, be prepared to have a ton of sound machines because you really could hear a ton of things. Cars, honking, other people's rooms, etc. 3.) Shower - It did seem a bit rusty in certain places and our shower wouldn't drain so there was a big puddle the whole time we were showering. The steam also set off the fire alarm like another person mentioned. Quick conclusion - I think it's an okay IHG hotel but not very good for families with young kids. Good for the location though.

We only tried breakfast at the restaurant but it was great. The serving sizes were huge. Definitely could have split one plate between 2 people. Even the kids meal was a large portion size. I will say however, that this is not the most accessible hotel if you have a stroller or wheelchair. The lobby has an accessible lift (the entrance is at the bottom of a small staircase), but we didnt know this when first walking over. So I spent a few minutes walking around the property trying to look for a way to get my stroller and 2 kids up to the front desk. The lift is also pretty narrow. I have a tandem double stroller so I was able to fit, but I dont think I would have been able to use the lift if I had a side by side double stroller. The only other way to get up to the lobby is to go through one of the elevators in the parking garage. But if you didn't park in the garage, then you'd have to walk your stroller (or move your wheelchair) into the parking garage and then use the correct elevator to get to the main lobby. Having small kids, this was just more inconvenient than anything. Not the hotel's fault, but just not a great fit for us at this time. I am grateful that they have multiple elevators throughout the parking garage so that you dont have to walk all the way across the property to use the elevator. The hotel was also recently renovated, but the attention to detail just wasnt there. One of the towel hooks in our bathroom was hanging off our wall, the light in the hallway was crooked and was very wobbly, and there was a panel that was supposed to covering the wires from the phone that was kinda just hanging loosely. Not a big deal for us, but just things that we noticed that could've used some work. Overall, not a bad hotel, but the stroller accessibility was just not a great fit for us as a family with young kids.

So either housekeeping was being dishonest about finding it originally, or they're being dishonest about changing the bedding between guests.) And now, after nearly a month of waiting, calling, and emailing, the kindle was FINALLY mailed. My initial review still stands. What an incredibly disappointing and frustrating experience. "Disappointed" would be an understatement. Booked one night (using points) at this property and really wish we hadn't. Was charged a mystery $50 fee at check in. Then at checkout we asked what it was for, the guy working the front desk didn't have a clue and he tried to say he'd fix it "when the computers were working again." When we called his bluff by saying we'd come back in an hour, it was magically fixed. Shady! The room itself was meh... the floors were strangely sloped/didn't feel level. The real kicker here: there was no bedside table on my side of the bed (an inconvenience in itself), so my kindle was placed on the bed with me. I unfortunately forgot my kindle on the bed and didn't realize until we had checked out and were hours away. We called the hotel and were told they didn't find anything in the room. I know for a fact it was left in that room (I've double triple quadruple checked my luggage and there's no where else it could possibly be). Again, SHADY.

One of the highlights of our stay was how the hotel carried such a unique atmosphere and history. It wasn't just a place to sleep--it felt like part of the adventure. Between the ocean views, cozy spaces, and local touches, it really captured the spirit of Monterrey. And then there were the ghost stories. Whether you're a believer or just love a good tale, they add an extra layer of fun and mystery to the stay. If you're someone that believes (or not), go to the front desk and ask for the "book". It had 78 pages of first hand accounts of unexplained happenings from guests. We had a very small moment ourselves, while I was sharing what I uncovered about the ghosts with my significant other in the morning, suddenly the bathroom light just turned on. Nobody was around and they do run on sensors. Not a significant event but certainly was well timed.
