I don't understand why is everyone so psyched about this place. It's not terrible, just mediocre. First of all, it is true that the rooms are very clean. Small, but clean. No problem there. The service was snappy. However, there's chipping paint here and there -- fine, no big deal. The real problems are the breakfast and wifi. The breakfast is just a standard mediocre drip coffee and a bunch of junky off-the-shelf pastries from a box -- the ones you buy for $1 at 7-11. I skipped that and instead went to a very nice Fellini coffee around the corner (highly recommended!). The wifi was an outright disaster. It seems to work only with Windows 7 and Mac OS X. I was kind of able to connect, however the connection was absolutely terrible. I tried using Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. Both had the same problem. I tried different browsers - same problem throughout. Granted, their technical support did spend half an hour with me trying to get it to work, but to no avail. Again, if I can't find anything else, I'll come back. But only if I can't find anything else. read more

I wish I could rate it zero, but I cant. We checked in around 11 pm. The front desk man was so rude. As soon we entered our room, there was a horrible bad smell. The room was not clean at all. My husband and I just stood in the middle of the room because we didnt want to touch anything. Look at the attached pictures, and you will see the hair dryer which is so disgusting. There were holes in the wall. There was a tray on which there was hair. The carpet was not clean at all. There was a bin in which there was water, yes you read it right water!So disgusting.... We tried to book a room in another place, but they were all full. We had no choice to stay there and check out immediately in the morning. So we decided to sleep there. I usually take bed sheets, so we spread it on bed. We slept on the bed so uncomfortably till morning. There were alot of noises during the night. We got our last surprise when we woke up with a bedbug in the bed which was walking on me, and I was bitten in different places by it too. Immediately we got to the front desk. Emptied the room, and check out. It has to be said that they gave us the refund, but that was the most disgusting experience we have ever had. read more

Can't give this place more than 2 stars. Location is pretty decent if you are looking to get to Cal or the highway in the opposite direction. The outside of the location looks great, it seems that some one makes an effort to make the outside of this place presentable. My problems started when I got into a room. Some how I got an "accessible" room which pretty much sucks in terms of how things are laid out. There are NO curtains in these rooms just some white pvc shutters. Why is that a problem? Well at night this place is lit up with halogen lights all over the place and a combo of those lights and crappy white shutters means you could read a book at night with all the indoor lights off, that is how bright it is in your room at night. Housekeeping has no probs shutting off your AC AND leaving the shutters open so that your room is nice and hot by the time you get back to it. Housekeeping also has no probs shorting you towels. TV channels were decent. Good hot water, just dated no adjustable shower heads so you get a crap shower. They do have an outside ice machine, just get to it before everyone else empties it. Parking is hit or miss. I would like to bump this review up but until the place gets actual curtains to keep the light out at night or better housekeeping I' will proly pass. read more

I'm actually quite surprised at the other review for this place, which is pretty damming. Perhaps the place is under new ownership? The staff were friendly, easy-going, and professional. Got me checked in right away with no hassle. The room was perfectly clean and comfortable. There was a nice high-def TV with tons of channels. The bathroom was newly renovated with marble tiles and the shower was excellent. The complementary breakfast was nothing fancy but I was glad to have that. Overall, a very well run establishment. I saw plaques in the lobby with recent awards such as "Best New Hotel," which did not surprise me at all. read more

I booked online and paid a premium price for a stay at this hotel. For that kind of splurge, I expected a good experience. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The staff was friendly, the atmosphere at the hotel was pleasant, parking was easy, and it was in a convenient location, but the room just didn't feel clean. The carpet, box springs, upholstered chair, walls, and sink mirror really needed attention. And the bathtub, while shiny white, had a couple of hairs left behind. All it would take to move my one-start review to a two- or three-star review would be some attention to detail. Bring in the carpet and upholstery cleaner! Wipe the mirror clean, run a cloth over the door near the handle, and spot-paint the white walls to cover stains and keep them white. Not sure if all of the rooms had a similar vibe or if I just got a particularly not-so-nice one. Hope it was the latter. read more

I'm going with two stars because the Yelp definition is "Meh. I've experienced better". It wasn't bad at all, and it was pretty clean as the other reviews state, except for the doors, which are clearly a "blind spot" of the cleaning crew (on the inside of my room door there was something sticky and the door was pretty dirty). the bathroom, floors, sheets, etc were clean, and that's what matters. the mattress was comfortable, but instead of a real comforter they have those plasticky thin hotel blankets that aren't warm at all. the heater hadn't been turned on for a while and it was so smelly and dusty I had to turn it off, so I was cold at night. the room was small but that wasn't really a problem for me. it reminded me of the rooms of that French hotel chain Ibis: small but efficient and clean. the breakfast was like the other reviewers stated, and they don't have enough room for all the guests to sit so if you wake up late when everyone is already up you have to sit on the picnic tables outside (it's cold!) or stand. I guess there are worse motels along University Ave, and for $120 a night in that area I guess it's not so bad. the check in and check out was smooth and overall it was an ok and safe place to crash, but really, nothing special. read more

This hotel gave me Scabies. My room was a dump, so I should have figured I'd catch something here, but I checked for bedbugs and didn't find any. I never would have thought about Scabies though, and now I'm dealing with this nightmare. Avoid at all costs. read more

We stayed here for a weekend getaway. I was so happily surprised by how nice this motel is. We got there very late and when we drove into the parking lot, I thought how nice it looked and then I thought it's probably because it's dark. But the next morning, it still looked nice! I always check the room for cleanliness before I set anything down. Everything looked clean. The bathroom was spotless. I dropped something and had to reach under the sink area and found that it was even clean there! There was a fridge and microwave in the room and they offer free Wifi. The breakfast that is available is simple, but plentiful--frozen waffles and french toast, English muffins, bread, fruit, cereal.... The desk staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked how to get around the area. The BART station is about 3 blocks away. There's a direct line to San Francisco. I think it's a commuter line because it stopped running at about 6pm, but there's another line that takes you to the N. Berkeley stop. You just have to transfer once. Super easy. I would definitely stay here again. read more

I'm sorry to be the bad egg here, but I didn't have the stellar experience that everyone else did at Rodeway Inn. I would consider this more along the lines of a motel as far as quality goes.. and I could probably never give a motel any higher than a 2 star rating. Like most other motels, the building is U-Shaped... but rather than exiting your room directly to the parking lot, there is a wooden deck built around the hotel. You can hear every footstep on it. Rolling suitcases bang over every 2x4 plank. There were some kids staying there during my visit and one of them was having a great time running from one end of the deck to the other pretty early in the morning. The walls are paper thin.. literally. You can hear everything going on in the adjacent rooms and outside the room as if you were standing there yourself. I avoided having any phone conversations to prevent eavesdropping. My refrigerator had to be unplugged to avoid listening to the constant gurgling sound it made. The room was very small, with areas of paint chipping off the walls. There was only one available electrical outlet, so I had to unplug the lamp on the night stand in order to charge my phone. The floors were hardwood and tile. I guess this could be just a personal preference, but walking on a hardwood floor barefoot is an unpleasant experience for me. The room appeared to be pretty clean, but when I went to pull down the sheets and blanket I noticed there was hair on them which led me to believe that the bed was made, but the linens were not changed since the last visitor. Once I picked off as many hairs as I could find, the bed was actually comfortable and I had a good sleep. Although I was skeeved about it, I really just needed to get it over with and didn't want to go through the hassle of switching rooms or hotels. The next morning, I was surprised to discover there was no iron or ironing board. I had to show up to work in wrinkled clothing. And the water pressure in the shower was practically non-existent. Also, something very shady happened to me. I stepped out of my room for about an hour to have dinner and when I came back, the air conditioner had been shut off and the blinds were opened but I left them closed. Why would anyone be going into my room at 8PM? The whole time I was there I had an unpleasant feeling and just wanted out. Between the hair, the secret visitor and the running child outside, it left a bad taste in my mouth without even trying the free breakfast. The only things this place has going for it is the price, location and the neutrogena. read more

The location is perfect for those attending functions at UC Berkeley and is close to the highway. That is the only good thing about it. I experienced several issues with the room including the tv not working for 3 days, soaking wet carpet (was told that it was cleaned but it remained wet for multiple days), room window left open/unlocked and people coming to the door because incorrect room information was put in the motel's system. In addition, the room is in desperate need of a deep cleaning, there was dust and webs throughout. Unfortunately, management did not work with me on resolution of issues with the exception of fixing tv multiple times. read more

This place was a pleasant surprise. I'd never stayed in a Rodeway Inn before and I was expecting it to be horrible. Instead, I had a nice, clean room with a micro-fridge, reasonably comfortable bed, free internet, and free parking. Yeah, it's kind of far from downtown (the only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5), but there is a bus that stops about a half-block away and goes right up University Ave. You can walk to the BART station in 20 minutes or so if you're scared of buses (don't be). They let me leave my car in the parking lot for several hours after I checked out, too. I was happy, and considering it's a lot cheaper than most Berkeley hotels, I'd stay again. read more

this pl was pretty cool. $ was good (~$70/night) and it was v close to north berkeley BART station. there was 7-11 (open til midnite) and a cool mexican food joint literally rt across the street. the breakfast set-up was pretty ghetto but the selection was pretty awesome and it was FREE. can't complain about that, they give u neutrogena soap and stuff...even conditioner!! nice touch! the only complaint is that it was a LONG walk to berkeley campus. cuz when i called they told me it was walking distance. i guess i should have been more clear on what defines "walking distance" read more

The room was extremely inexpensive ($77/night through priceline). The hotel was quiet, clean and conveniently located. The room was cleanish as the carpet was overall clean but there was hair/dirt between the bed and nightstand that was very visable. It has free continental breakfast (cereal, packaged pastries, english muffins, waffles, fruit, coffee and juice), free internet and free parking. The staff is friendly and helpful. There are a few places to eat withinwalking distance. I would avoid the marketplace across the street and continue on to 7-11 for snacks/beverages. It is much cheaper and cleaner! The overall hotel is quiet. The BART is within two blocks on Acton and is a quick and inexpensive trip to San Francisco (about $7 roundtrip to Embarcadero Station). Although the room could be cleaner, I think the hotel is an excellent bargain. I would definitely stay again! read more

This place is such a bargain and really excellent for what it is. When we're in Berkeley we like to stay in two different places: one is a B&B for a more relaxing stay, and the second is this one. While this is no B&B, I think it's a perfectly good, clean, comfortable place to stay. The rooms are very cheap ($70-something a night!), they offer a nice breakfast in the morning, and they have friendly staff. We stayed here a few nights while we were getting some major work done on the house. Loved it. It's not the Ritz, but it's clean and roomy and has lots of the nice little amenities you don't expect for a room under $100. The breakfast was more than generous: lots of hot and cold beverages, fresh fruit, a freezer full of waffles, french toast, and the like. Front desk was mellow and cool. Completely devoid of the sketchy vibe that sometimes accompanies lower-cost hotels. When we have family and friends in town, we put them up there, and everyone has raved about it. This is literally the dirtiest hotel room I've ever stayed in compared to the hundreds of hotels and hostels I've stayed at around the world. Which is actually pretty impressive. The carpet and walls were in terrible condition, but the bedding and bathroom were clean enough, hence the two stars. There were really obvious large crumbs in the open area of the room near the desk and underneath the sink - easily reachable by vacuum should someone have attempted to use a vacuum. There were also small bits of trash in all parts of the room that couldn't easily be reached by a vacuum - behind and under the beds. There was what looked like cheese on the wall behind the bed (oh God, please have been cheese). Given the amount of garbage and potentially food crumbs throughout the room I was on the lookout for potential creatures the entire two-week stay, but thankfully didn't find anything. I left a $5 tip the first night with a note asking the cleaning person to vacuum. I've never had to actually explicitly ask for someone to vacuum my room before. They did vacuum the obvious crumbs in the desk area, but did not address the general disgusting condition of the carpet in all areas. Sigh. Pros: -plenty of free parking -really good restaurants next to the hotel -free breakfast (waffle maker, cereal, prepackaged pastries, fruit, coffee, juice machine) -microwave and refrigerator in room Cons: -cleaning staff seriously needs to learn how to vacuum and clean walls -more than once when we asked for another key it would automatically deactivate all other keys, so I was left locked out more than once. -no coffeemaker in room read more

For the price this is a nice hotel (was 80/night during the week). Reasonably quiet, free breakfast, microwave, fridge, desk, tv, parking, wifi. There's a grocery store, 2 coffee shops, beer store, multiple restaurants all within a block. Mexican food right across the street. Nice management. This place was a disappointment. There were flies and mosquitoes everywhere... even flying around the coffee and snack area in the front lobby. This did not make a good impression. When we got our keys we discovered that the front door to our room was crumbling apart around the edges. The stucco had holes in it. The carpet was filthy, dusty, and musty. The walls were dirty and had random little holes in them that were patched up with clumsily cut out squares of dry wall that didn't thoroughly cover up the holes and cracks they were supposed to be hiding. There was 1/3 of a toilet paper roll left for us in the bathroom with only one extra roll in the bathroom. The tiles around to bathtub faucet were crumbling and creating holes and space between the inner wall and the metal faucet. When we first walked in we were greeted byTHREE flies buzzing around the room, as if they owned the place. I had to chase them down and kill them. Then I discovered three huge mosquitoes ( I couldn't catch and kill) hovering over the bed. Gross! At night we heard the occupants next door screaming and fighting and crying. They kept slamming doors and banging up against the walls. Needless to say, this was disturbing and concerning. Even though the manager at the front check-in desk told us they offer e complimentary breakfast, we were too disgusted by the flies in the lobby to take them up on that offer. This place is a fleabag inn. I would not recommend that anyone stay here. read more

This cost more than I usually pay for a motel, but I have to say, it was nice to stay in a place so immaculate and pristine. The surroundings are pleasant too, with lots of flower baskets. The room was on the small side, but included a small fridge and microwave, as well as a large flat screen t.v. I thought the continental breakfast was quite decent, especially considering the last motel I stayed out only had packaged danishes and granola bars. This had those *and* a bunch of other stuff including cereal, fruit, yogurt and reheatable waffles with syrup. Because of the urban location, it is a bit on the noisy side. We were pretty far from the street, but still got some noise. I would definitely stay there again. read more

The staff was friendly and professional; my interaction with them was limited to checkin and checkout so it's hard to say more. The rooms are average motel-room size, though the bathroom is really quite tiny, but everything is clean and comfortable. The beds are pillow-top and the mattress underneath is a smidge on the firm side, which thankfully is just how I like it. The place was remodeled only a couple years ago, so the bathroom counters and shower tile is all granite, which is a nice touch. The mini-fridge is actually generously sized -- it's not one of those tiny cubes, but a good 3.5 feet tall or so. The TV is okay, carrying directv with hbo and basic channels, but it's a tube tv, no flatscreens here. Water pressure in the showers is practically nonexistent, but that's about par for the course with most motels in CA. Street noise is actually pretty minimal considering how close it is to University, though there is still a little. Soundproofing within seems to be perfect, and I can't even hear other doors opening or closing most of the time. The free wifi is really kind of random in availability sometimes, and frequently conks out (for minutes though, not hours). read more

Satisfactory budget hotel experience in a convenient location. As is often true, the facility is battered. You will want an eyeshade because the TV flashes bright messages all night.You will want ear plugs because there are lots of noises. I had trouble working the HVAC. No smoke detetector in my room. No in-room coffee maker. Etc... BUT it was clean enough and the bed was fine. Obviously it was once a sweet little motor court. I wiould stay here again, given price/location. read more

First, the CON's: There is no counter space in the bathroom, and I mean none, and there are no places to put your suitcases or clothes. No drawers, no flat space, and you almost have to turn sideways to get through the room. Tiny! Livable, but tiny. #2: NOISE!! On our second night,an entire bus load of college aged tourists arrived and screamed, and laughed, and slamed doors until 10:30 PM. They parked themselves on the steps in front of our door, and they just sat out there and smoked and drank beer. The second-hand smoke sucked in through our heater and permeated our entire room, and we don't smoke. We reported it to the manager, but I finally had to go out and confront them myself, which worked for a while, but they kept it up for four days, (but only until 9 PM after I talked to them)....Unreal. I hated being the cop, and it didn't help that NONE of them spoke a word of English, but it IS aginst the law, and no one should have to put up with second-hand smoke. I just wish the manager could have put his foot down. Little thing #3:......But one of my pet pevies are the receptacles(if you can find them) just barely work, the plug actually falls out on it's own weight. Not a big thing, but frustrating none the less, especially with the big fat cell phone chargers.. Now for the PROS: #1 The bed was the best hotel bed we could remember for a while (including @ hotels that cost 2 to 3 X's more). That alone, counts for a whole lot, as we were very busy with family most of the time, and just wanted a clean, inexpensive place to crash, that didn't kill our backs. PRO # 2: it was hard to beat the cost. Very reasonable. PRO#3: the neighborhood was very "OK". We walked around a lot, even at night. There is a nice local coffee place right in front. Also, there is a good Pizza joint, and other eating places right on University Blvd. I guess overall, it is an OK place to stay, and most likely there are not usually bus- loads of loud and obnoxious college kids. If the manager had some backbone and could have helped keep it quite, and smoke free, that would have gone a long way toward a better rating. My wife would return (for the cost AND bed), but I would not! She gives it 3.5 stars, but I am writing this--so 2.5, max!!! read more

Within walking distance of the downtown area and just a couple blocks from a BART station. The bed was very comfortable! The only drawback I found was how few parking spaces there are. For the price, this place is great. It's in a crappy area (downtown Berkeley) and don't expect a palace, but it's clean and comfortable and has everything you need. I like the free internet and free parking; I LOVE the microwave and fridge in every room, and there's directTV (satellite) to watch. Management is really nice. If you are looking for a clean room, comfortable bed, place to take a shower, and extremely friendly staff this is good place.
