The Rodeway Inn Berkeley was converted into temporary housing under the Project Roomkey program the state launched in 2020. Residents who lived in the West Berkeley freeway encampments moved there first before UC Berkeley and the city leased the hotel to close an encampment at People's Park. I like to jokingly refer to this type of establishment as a, "Boutique Motel." In times gone past they would have simply been known as a, "Motel." But, in cases like this place, they have taken the time to upgrade the facility, add a fountain, and make the place more interesting. The problem is, (and it is a big problem), they do not keep the facility up to the level of say a Boutique Hotel once the upgrades have been made. You can see the photos I posted of the big cracks in the wall and rotting wood on the floorboard as an example. I have stayed at this Rodeway Inn two times; both for the same the reason -- all the hotels in San Francisco were booked and I needed a last minute place to stay in the Bay Area. The first time was fine. The second time, (a couple of days ago), I check into room 118 and it literally smelled like vomit. It was really overpowering and really very-very bad! This is the problem with places like this; either the staff doesn't care enough or cannot easily fix a problem so they just leave it alone and make the guests live with it. This is simply wrong! No, "Good," establishment would even think of renting out a room in this condition. If a previous guest throws up in a room, the staff and management should do whatever it takes to clean it up properly before the room is rented! What I finally did was to go to the 711 down the street and buy some Febreeze, which got us through the night. In the AM, when breakfast was served, there was also a problem. Though I never eat the free breakfast at places like this, we did go into the office to get a cup of coffee. They were out. How can you be out of coffee for your guests in the morning? That is just poor management. But, the staff is nice... That's the story. Do with it what you will. read more

I was skeptical at first when choosing this hotel for my 4-night stay. The exterior looks dated, but the rooms have been remodeled, modernized and are up to date! My room looked brand new and I was pleasantly surprised. My bed was nice and comfortable, the AC/Heat worked nicely, the shower was great(just needs a tad bit more pressure in my opinion) and the internet was average at best, but still worked good. I didn't go for the free breakfast, only for the vending machine that barely worked. That could sure use some updating itself. This hotel is roughly 3-short blocks away from the North Berkeley BART Station for your commuting needs, along with AC Transit's 51B, 52, 88, J(to/from San Francisco, rush hours only) right within footsteps of the hotel, so you have plenty of choices as to how you want to get around if you know how to do so. If you're traveling here from SFO on BART, it'll cost you $10 or so(I think $10.40 or $10.90), and from Oakland Airport, about $9.45. You also have a Target across the street that opens till 10pm, and several restaurants around the area. Some do close pretty darn early though, so keep that in mind. When I revisit The Bay Area, I'll definitely book this hotel again if the rates are right! This hotel will teach you to don't judge a book by it's cover. read more

We spent four nights here and had a very pleasant stay. We booked the room through Priceline so we got a great rate. The place is homey; not exactly modern or upscale but comfy and safe. The room was cozy and had a fridge and microwave. There is ample parking and you're only steps from your room no matter where you park. The bed was super comfy and they provide extra pillows in a cubby. The room has a heater/air conditioning unit that works great. Housekeeping was super friendy and so were the people in the office. Overall, we had a great stay and nothing to complain about. We definitely felt at home here and would come back again. Bonus: We ordered in from Postmates and the delivery was super easy because of the way the lot is set up. They had no trouble finding our room. read more

Decent hotel right on University Ave. Close to restaurants, stores. Ok, beds, well actually, pretty funky beds, not the newest. Knda noisy from University Ave. Ok parking, ok free Continental breakfast. I used to stay here before I got my service dog. But I was refused a room with him. Which is not complient with the ADA. I hope someone complains and they get fined, and have to change their policy. I won't stay here again- even if I didn't have my service dog with me! Oh, and they extort their prices on the weekends or when there is something going on in town. This is typical of big chain hotels, and vastly unfair. But for this semi dump place to charge a hundred more a night, is completely ridiculous! The owners really need to get a clue. This is highly unethical. read more

Love going to this clean little inn with company when I'm in Berkeley! Very nice people in management and the cleaning services provided are always outstanding, always appreciate that they clean in between days even when staying for an extended amount of time. Too bad zero stars is not an option. This is hands down the nastiest hotel room I have ever seen. Ended up not staying here, as it is way below standards for any normal person to sleep in. Holes in the walls, patched up and painted over entrance to the room, filthy chair, blood and make up on the blankets. Manager was nice enough to give a full refund through Expedia since explaining it is not possible to stay. This is more of a warning to let people know to not stay here. Like other reviewers here, I found this place to be a pleasant surprise. The courtyard is decorated with potted flowers throughout and the room was clean and nicely furnished, and they provided quality Neutrogena products (shampoo, conditioner, face soap, bath soap, and shower cap). The king size bed was comfortable... despite the slight noise from traffic, I was able to sleep the whole night without waking up once. The neighborhood looks run-down, but I had no problems feeling safe. The complimentary breakfast consisted of Starbucks coffee, juice, milk, assorted pastries and cereals, frozen waffles, fresh fruit, and yogurt. The price was $90 for one night. Compared to other hotels in the area, this is a bargain, especially since I just needed a place to sleep. Oh yes, and parking is free. read more

This was a very quaint little convenient place to stay in Berkeley since we are not that familiar with the city of Berkeley.we were able to visit very nice restaurant call Angeline's Louisiana Kitchen. after dinner we stopped over at The Albatross Pub on San Pablo and then came right back to the hotel,we will do it again. Blood on the floor, broken bathroom window, vandalized tv stand and hair on the bed. Do not stay here, even if the cost is low. I paid $159 for the dirtiest room I have ever seen. I met a long time friend at this motel, he did all the research I wasn't really aware of what the expect, but I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, every single staff member I encountered was friendly and super helpful, they really made the stay a great time, even when we stumbled into the free breakfast in the lobby slightly hungover, they still made us feel like platinum members of a 5 star hotel. The room was what you would expect of an average motel, except surprisingly clean, it had all the basic amenities, nothing super frilly, but what really takes the cake is how well maintained the exterior is, there are beautiful flowers planted outside of each room, and a gorgeous fountain in the courtyard, it's made just going out to smoke a cigarette an awesome experience. I requested a late checkout before we went in for the night, they told me they officially don't offer late check out but to put the do not disturb sign and they would do what they could do, and lo and behold we were able to leave comfortably at 12 with no issues. I would 100% recommend this place to anyone read more

This hotel is not clean nor up to standards. The floors are dirty, cob webs under the bed along with garbage. Windows unlocked, torn carpet, torn lamp shades cracks in the walls that are not painted. Areas of the room are different colors toilet paper in the peep holes of the doors. Toilets are very low to the floor and difficult for people with disabilities to sit on. I've stayed at a couple different hotels in Berkeley due business travels and this one has been the best and cheapest. This location is pretty central to what we planned for when in Berkeley (close to BART, UC Berkeley, & Downtown Berkeley). The rooms were clean and it has everything we needed. The staff was super friendly and helpful as well, and also recommended a great place to eat in the area. The hotel exterior was beautiful as well. I'm starting as a graduate student in the fall and had to come up to go apartment hunting--a harrowing experience in Berkeley. My choice of motel made the trip much easier. I chose the Rodeway Inn because it was cheap and had good reviews on this site. Honestly, it deserves way more 5 star reviews! In the lobby, there are several Gold Star awards from Choice Hotels, and they are clearly deserved. My room was immaculate and well-maintained. The desk staff is wonderful and courteous. (We made the drive up from Orange County and got in about 1pm, exhausted. I called to see if it were possible to check in, even though technically check-in wasn't until 3pm. They made a room up for us so we could crash, and didn't charge us extra.) As is mentioned in other reviews, the continental breakfast is outstanding. The coffee is great, the options are myriad, and everything is clean. As for food the rest of the day, there are lots of restaurants around, including Bangkok Thai, which will deliver for free right to your room! All in all, a great place to stay. I will recommend this motel to everyone who comes to visit me in the next few years! read more

I think people are overrating this place a bit due to the cute exterior, the actual rooms are just a standard decently-kept Rodeway Inn, but you can get it for 60-70 bucks on weeknights sometimes and I'll certainly concede it's good for that price in the spendy-ass Bay Area. Well-cleaned, comfy bed, good WiFi, the property is recessed quite a bit from University Ave so it's quiet at night as long as other guests aren't assbags. Excellent digital cable TV selection, way better than the usual budget motel. Rooms have microwave and fridge but no coffee maker. Starbucks coffee at breakfast is a step up from the usual motel lobby coffee but otherwise it's the usual cheap-end continental. One floor only so no worries about getting stuck with Stompy McGee above you. Relative to Bay Area pricing it's the best budget room I've seen yet in the area, and a very doable 2.5 block walk from North Berkeley BART. read more

I stayed for a day and I half and was a little glad to know that it was close to downtown Berkley and provided a continental breakfast. So, when I woke up and walked over to the lobby to have my toast with butter and jelly like most continental breakfast I was shocked to see a variety of food and fruits available for me to devour! They had sausage and egg croissants, cereal, waffles, and French toast just to name a few. The front desk people were also very helpful and even let me continue to park my car after I had checked out to keep shopping around. I would definitely recommend this place again. Facility appeared to be nice and clean. It was very attractive. However, the bias racist behaviour of the manager/owner is unacceptable. Please please please!!! All African Americans avoid this hotel. I'm a limo driver who dropped off a patron in my lincoln towncar at this hotel tonight. I was saying my good buys to my customer and the manager immediately approached my vehicle and asked me what do u need, Can I help you? I told him no I was dropping off a customer and he continued to hang around the car looking at me suspiciously. I was shocked. To add insult to injury he stared at me and my vehicle until I drove off and was on the street. He made it clear that he do not want African Americans on the premises for any reason. read more

This is a perfect, clean and decent hotel. My business partner and I were in from the Bronx and had just done a 'job' at a local establishment and were looking to lie low until the heat cooled off, and this fit the bill. What I liked about it: - The front desk attendant was nice, and he didn't ask too many questions. He knows how to keep quiet. Believe you me. - The rooms all look out on the parking lot, so you got a good clear view of your ride, and you can tell if anyones on to you. - The Bed is so thick and comfortable, despite the stresses of the job I just did, I got some great shut eye while my partner looked out. -Clean bathroom in the back with a strong toilet, if you should have a guest that needs to be temporarily restrained. -Despite this being an inexpensive hotel, the towels were soft and very absorbent, which was handy for showers and when our guest got out of hand. What I don't like about it: - Thin walls: I could hear my neighbors, and fortunately they didn't hear me, or our guest, on account of some extra strong duct tape. - No back window, so if the heat is onto you, you gotta come out the front cannons blazing. Nobody wants that. - It's on a main street, University, and I usually prefer a quieter more discreet location, but there was no traffic noise that bothered me, my business partner, or our guest. And sometimes the best way to hide out is in the middle of town. Am I wrong? In short, a lovely if not overly glamorous safe house that has all one could hope for (except for the back door / window escape route I mentioned previously). read more

I spent two nights here. While there were steps everywhere, there was also a lift, so I was able to effectively, move about with my jogging stroller. The staff was very nice, and the rooms I stayed in were also nice. The first one was a wheelchair access room. Quite large, had a micro/fridge combo, and a big flatscreen tv on the wall. the bathroom was big, had a walk-in shower, complete with showerheads and shower seats. The second room(because the first room was already reserved) was smaller, had a tub, a smaller flatscreen, and was still very nice. This place has free breakfast in the mornings,,,they had waffles, french toast, yogurt,fruit,cereals, granola bars, nutri grain bars, danishes, coffee, tea, and orange juice. Lot's of stuff. Cute little hotel in the middle of Berkeley for a good rate. Hotel management was friendly, speedy check-in/check-out process. The rooms were small but clean, and our bed was nice and soft. The only thing that wasn't fantastic (and this is a minor complaint) was the continental breakfast - only coffee, OJ, english muffins, frozen eggo waffles and french toast, box breakfast cereal, and those cheap individually-wrapped danish things. Maybe this is a little picky, but I really wanted a toasted bagel with cream cheese, or some other, more well-rounded offerings. Overall this was a good hotel, and I would stay here again if I were in the area. My new found love in B-town. It's funny how you find what your looking for by accident. I drove by the place because me and my Cuzzo needed a place to sleep for the night with the long day in the construction field. Anyhow we drove in and new we were in for a treat, the entrance is stunning with a waterfall and picnic area. The office is small and cozy where they have the breakfast and coffee set up. Does this motel fill the basic necessity of having a habitable room to stay in, yes. If you're looking for anything else you're out of luck. Our lamps provided were broken, the mattress had excessive stains on them, and the towels provided smelled odd. I think I was particularly thrown off when I went to their breakfast and they were serving 3 weeks expired bread and apples that if you looked closely did not seem right. This motel is an amalgamation of distasteful inconveniences that make you think twice about staying. Plus their TV dimensions were off and I was trying to watch basketball. Kinda weird when someone shoots and you couldn't even see them. Cheapest in the area yes, but 400 for 2 nights you would expect some decency. read more

I was taking the bar exam and needed a place to stay closer to Oakland, so I was stoked to see the reviews for this affordable motel. However, it was not what i expected. Of course, I was in a rush, so I forgot to take the "Do not disturb" sign. When I got back, I was displeased to see that I had no clean towels, and went to the front desk. I understand that I should have removed the sign, but I would expect to be able to get new linens. Well, I got 1 towel and 1 hand towel. I told him I use a washcloth, too, so he brought me exactly one washcloth. The next night, there was a bustle outside my door. I got up to see, and it was about a dozen officers and firefighters restraining an assailant right in front of my room. Well, it's the eastbay, so what can you do, right? I had accidentally broke some glass in my room. I left a sign near it so that nobody would get hurt. When I came back, the room had been "cleaned" (since I remembered to take the do not disturb sign down), but the glass still remained. I couldn't really tell that it had been cleaned. Anyway, to make a long story short (I hate it when people say that), it seemed to me that these people are newcomers to the hospitality business. Pleasantly surprised by the Rodeway Inn! My wife and I were only passing through Berkeley and didn't want to spend too much on a room for just a single night. Fortunately, we found the Rodeway Inn. The location is quite central, many local restaurants and markets are within a short walk and the price was right. The staff was courteous at both check-in and check-out. The room was clean and the climate control worked well. The amenities were very basic, but it was a comfortable stay and covered all of the essentials. It's an older hotel, so the walls weren't exactly soundproof, but the noise level was very reasonable considering the communal walkway and parking lot were right outside of the window. I imagine parking can get tight if it's busy, but there are quite a few spaces available and parking is off the main street, which is nice. The smell of the Thai restaurant cooking near the entrance to the hotel was amazing. My wife and I gave in and ate there for dinner because it smelled so good! Breakfast was very simple, but it was nice to have some juice and a yogurt before hitting the road the next morning. All in all, the Rodeway Inn in Berkeley is definitely a place we would stay at again. Certainly better than most hotels in the "budget" price range. If you don't require anything fancy, it's a very good value for the area. Recommended! read more

Stayed here for the great price and the great location. It's extremely easy to find and it's close to the BART station which is a huge bonus however there is plenty of room for parking. I wish I could rate it zero, but I cant. We checked in around 11 pm. The front desk man was so rude. As soon we entered our room, there was a horrible bad smell. The room was not clean at all. My husband and I just stood in the middle of the room because we didnt want to touch anything. Look at the attached pictures, and you will see the hair dryer which is so disgusting. There were holes in the wall. There was a tray on which there was hair. The carpet was not clean at all. There was a bin in which there was water, yes you read it right water!So disgusting.... We tried to book a room in another place, but they were all full. We had no choice to stay there and check out immediately in the morning. So we decided to sleep there. I usually take bed sheets, so we spread it on bed. We slept on the bed so uncomfortably till morning. There were alot of noises during the night. We got our last surprise when we woke up with a bedbug in the bed which was walking on me, and I was bitten in different places by it too. Immediately we got to the front desk. Emptied the room, and check out. It has to be said that they gave us the refund, but that was the most disgusting experience we have ever had. read more
