Three stars for A-Okay. I stopped here for the Route 33 Brew Trail. Staff was nice enough. Beer was affordable (3 tastings for $7). They had Back Country food truck serving up BBQ. Just wasn't feeling it. A bit busy sitting at the bar on a Sunday evening and the beer I sampled wasn't anything I wanted to finish. Perhaps if you get there early to avoid the crowd, or have plenty of time to lounge about the grounds you'll have a better experience. Starting with sampling their very flavorful and delicious onsite made craft beer. They offer 14 craft beers from ale, IPA to saisons and even a nice cherry sour. These craft beers are aromatic and chocked full of flavor! If you want to book a table up by their tap room, I highly recommend making a reservation. Note, you make a reservation via email. However, you can also grab a beer up at their tap room and meander down to the pond. Rockmill has beautiful acres to meander, while enjoying a cold craft beer. Rockmill also offers woodfired pizzas, sandwiches, charcuterie board and desserts. On the weekends, they host live music events down at the pond. The Rockmill Brewery is such a great day trip from Cbus! I believe it is an old horse farm where they do their brewing and there are some taps inside the house. It is a really cool set up, with seating areas all around the house. And then the best part, you can just kind of hangout in the yard all day. There is even a cool little trail next to the property. Everyone on staff is super friendly. BYO snacks for a nice picnic or there is the BBQ food truck available. Don't leave without trying the brisket with the spicy BBQ sauce! They're doing some construction this year, so parking might get a little dicey while that is going on. Hopefully it's not too "corporate" when they are done! read more

No question, this is a 5 Star place. The picturesque setting of this brewery and tasting room definitely adds to the experience. On the grounds, there is a pond, chapel, and a lush green lawn with rolling hills. Inside the tasting room, the ambiance is warm and welcoming. It used to be a stable house and lots of the old wooden beams are exposed. It's rustic, yet modern, and very tastefully done. The patio was large and also had a fire pit. The day we visited, the leaves were just starting to change, and it was misting a little, so we couldn't use the patio for our tasting. The Beer. We were invited for a private tasting by Matthew, the owner. He explained that these beers were crafted to be paired with different foods, so he had prepared some cheeses and dark chocolates and Spanish almonds. WOW! I mean, really! It was amazing the way that these Belgian style beers were really set off by the different foods. These are beers that you pick for your meal not unlike you would pick out a nice bottle of wine. The beer is delicious, the service is excellent but honestly my favorite thing about this establishment is the ambience. It is just absolutely lovely, inside and out. It is such an original space with so many little nooks and crannies to tuck away and have a beer and some good conversation. It's beautiful in the summer and cozy in the colder months. This is my favorite brewery I've been to on the Columbus Ale Trail! you can get a flight of 3 beers for $7 or 4 for $10. I could drink all of their beers- my favorites are the petite saison and cerise cherry sour. My husband enjoyed their Belgian Pilsner since it was light enough before our hike in Hocking Hills. Rockmill has a great atmosphere inside and out- perfect for a big group if you want. They have many rooms, some with large tables and more comfortable spots on couches. There are tables outside and even a fire pit overlooking a pond. They don't serve food but have a food truck on site or you can bring your own food. The staff at the brewery were so friendly, making recommendations and telling us about their live music events. We will definitely be back! read more

This place totally lived up to the hype. It has so much more to offer than a typical brewery. I loved how spacious it was. You can easily find a spot to settle in without having to be too close to your neighbor. Outside there are plenty of places to sit-picnic tables, seating around a fire pit, tables and chairs under cafe lights on the patio, and tons of space to set up a picnic near the small lake. On the inside, there's a family style dining room table, a small bar area to order beers and sit at high tops, and an upstairs loft area that looked cute. The inside is so big I didn't even get the full tour. Overall, the feel is very rustic and cozy. The beer was good. I didn't have a favorite, but liked them all. They also had some interesting options for people who like to branch out with their beer choices. Some of their beers included hints of tobacco, pistachio and mushroom-very unique! You can bring your own food, but it looks like they have food trucks on the weekend, too. There was a bbq food truck while I was there that smelled amazing. This is a very cool brewery with a down to earth, kick your feet up, and stay a while atmosphere; of course the beer is great. They have a very nice indoor and outdoor space and food trucks are available, you can always bring your own food. Quick! Go here before it explodes with popularity and you have to wait months to get in for a tour! I'd been wanting to check out this place ever since I heard about it last year, and finally on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I stuffed Dan in the car and we took a drive out to Lancaster. It's about a half hour drive, nice enough on a sunny day; that is, if you can manage to navigate out of Columbus's ridiculously always under construction freeways. Once you turn onto Lithopolis from Lamb, the farm comes up really quickly on your right, so be watching for it, especially if there are cars behind you. There is a little gravel road leading to a small parking lot between the brewery and the tasting room -- which is really a big beautiful house broken up into a bar area, seating areas, and a gorgeous patio. We were greeted by a big furry white dog and a woman named Judy, who is the mother of Matt, the brewmaster, who wasn't in today. She invited us in, showed us around the house, which really feels like someone's home, and got us settled on the patio with the beer flight, a carafe of water, and some bread. It was a little warm, but there were patio umbrellas, comfy chairs, and a lovely view of the farm. We leisurely sat and sipped, discovering that the flavors of the cask aged tripel are best when slightly warm. After we finished, Judy walked us over to the brewery to get a "tour" from Dennis, her husband. This consisted of us standing in the main room of the brewery while he showed us the different pots and pipes used to brew, took us into the adjacent aging room, talked about the ingredients, let us sniff the hops and taste the malt grains. He called the brewery a "nanobrewery" since they only presently produce two barrels a day but will be jumping up to twenty in a few months because of the demand and publicity that they've been getting. He walked us out to the yard and pointed us towards the chapel, the old bridge and waterfall, the "hops garden" and the cave, all on the farm's property, so we took a stroll around. Dan dubbed it a "miniature state park" what with the hiking, rock formations, and lovely scenery. This is a great place to spend an afternoon. Since they do not have a food menu yet, they encourage you to bring a picnic or your own food. There are picnic tables, plenty of tables and seating areas in the house. We spent over two hours enjoying the beer, learning about the operation of the brewery, talking with Judy and Dennis, exploring the property and generally just enjoying being outdoors and away from the city. Great local hidden gem!! This brewery is literally inside the owners' barn/cabin home. The bar is at one end, the rest of the area is open seating: couches a few large tables open fire place - the perfect cozy niche :) A friend and I shared a flight of the local liquid. I tried the Witbier first. Spices and orange peel (I love hints of fruit). I could taste the citrus. It was good. I'm not a beer taster, but I give the owners props for a great business they have going!! The best thing about our visit to this locale? Our party of nine were never rushed. I guess Rockmill isn't really 'off the grid', but to me this place is a hidden gem! I'd been wanting to go to their tasting room for months, but it's hard for me to venture outside of 270 sometimes. Anyway, I was SO glad to get the opportunity to go out there. They have their tasting room open Saturdays and Sundays from 12-8, but check their facebook before you head out to make sure they aren't closed for a private event. The farm is easy to find and absolutely beautiful. It feels homey and welcoming there. Inside there is the bar, tables, an expansive dining room with a viking size feast table, and a full kitchen. Basically when you're there, nothing is off limits. You can do a flight, buy bottles, create your own tasting, have a guided tasting, or bring a picnic. If you'd like to have a DIY tatsting, you can email Rockmill and they'll send you a shopping list for pairings. I'd recommend this. Just say yes to the Saison with the 5 year aged gouda from Whole Foods. We were lucky enough to get an impromptu tasting from owner Matt. He's charming, generous, passionate about beer and local economy, and an overall stand-up guy. He's a great face for the business. Not to mention, the beer is awesome! I am a huge fan of Belgian style beers and their Dubbel rivals my favorite beer (Pere Jacques). Rockmill is the perfect midday outing and perfect for all sorts of events. As a frequent visitor of the Rockmill Tavern, I am very familiar with the delicious Belgians and barrel-aged renditions that make Rockmill unique. The drive is long from the West side of Columbus but it is worth it. The tasting room is a beautiful farm house with nooks and crannies to explore and plenty of cozy seating. Purchase a flight, glass, or a bottle to share and choose a seat in front of the windows on a chilly day. If it is nice out, sit on the patio or take a walk around the pond and explore the grounds. I highly recommend bringing a blanket and outdoor (or board games) for your visit. They have a full kitchen that patrons can use but people seem to pack their own picnics and camp out for the day. Give yourself plenty of time to drink and explore and definitely bring snacks!!! This is the best brewery in Central Ohio so take an afternoon to visit this beautiful place. read more

I've been meaning to make my way through the Columbus Ale Trail, and so on a trip back into Columbus from a weekend at Hocking Hills it was the perfect opportunity to try Rockmill Brewery. The place is beautifully tucked into the farmlands and rolling hills of Lancaster. The tasting room and house is gorgeous and there are new rooms and places to explore around every corner! If it's nice enough to go outside, you can sit around a fire pit or take a walk down to the pond and explore the little chapel (seriously!). You'll also get to know the pets on the property, who are so sweet and happy to be part of your experience. Bring your own food and make a picnic of it. It's probably a long trek to the nearest take-out place. I saw they have recommendations on their web site, but I bet you're better off to just bring your own snacks. Now to the beers - excellent! While I scoped the place, my husband ordered a flight and then we sat to sample. I fell in love with the War on Wheat. It's description says it incorporates almonds with anise, and it does not disappoint. The almond finish is delicious and one of the most unique flavors I've ever tasted in a beer. Then, when I went to order another pour of it, I looked more closely at the menu and saw that it's a gluten free beer! Whaaa?! A delicious beer AND it's gluten free? I'll definitely be recommending this one to my GF friends. I also really enjoyed the Petite Saison, with pistachio and honey, the Le Cheval, and the Cask Aged Noir. Go here. Do it. I went to my first tasting at Rockmill Brewery today. The amazing thing is I have ridden bike past the farm for years and didn't even realize what amazing beverages I was ridding by. A friend I work with brought a bottle of Triple to me in the spring of 2011 and told me the story of how they got started. My first sip stopped me in my tracks. I thought this is La Fin Du Monde. I was surprised to find a local brewery with the ability to make a triple that tastes like La Fin Du Monde. There is a natural spring on the farm that has a similar mineral compound as Wallonia, Belgium. And no one makes beer like the Belgiums, well until now. They say the water has no lead and a high level of calcium. I tasted the water straight from the source. Perhaps the best water I've had - even better than Britta (if you can believe that) :o). One of the owners ran into me as I was getting out of the car. I asked him about where I should go to get started and he asked if I wanted a tour. So we went into the brewery and he gave a very comprehensive tour. As this guy was talking it dawned on me - this dude has more knowledge about beer than I have about anything. They have a nice big barn that has been converted into a party house. There is a huge pond in the back with a canoe, fire pit, platform on the edge of the pond. There is a small chapel that seats 16 - yes I said it was small. There is a swing bridge that takes you across the creek that flows through the property and a nice little path through the woods. The hospitality of the owners is impressive. It was like talking to old friends that I didn't know. Their range of beers are exceptionally tasty. To quote a friend after his first sip, "This is a sippin' beer. It ain't for chuggin'". This is a beer that one savors. One must experience the nose of the beer. Allow its aromatic richness to expand your palette. Take a drink and hold it on the center of your tongue - savoir it and you can thank me later. :o) read more

I'm a Bourbon whiskey drinker and lately, I'm on the Tripel kick, so when I saw they have Bourbon Tripel, of course I had to try it, and that turned out to be the biggest "disappointment" of the day, because their Bourbon Tripel out of this world good, BUT they don't bottle it. That's like you met the girl of your dreams and she turns out to be an lesbian. Sigh... After the Boubon Tripel, I decided try the flight, Saison, Saison Super and Casket Aged Tripel. I'm not a big fan of the Saison and Saison Super,mainly because I'm not a big fan of sour beers The Cask Aged Tripel is bit too cloudy for me, but good. By now, I'm bit buzzed, so I decided to take a chance, instead of trying the Tripel at the brewery, I bought myself two bottles, one to bring back home to Texas and one to try with my brother on Sat night (who lives in Columbus). At dinner time, I pop the bottle, and let him tried it first, and he got this "you just wasted $32" look on his face and I thought, greeeerrrrrttt. Then I tried it myself, and I was like, "Are you kidding me, this is the one of the best Tripel I had" look on my face. I was seriously thinking about going back there on Sunday to pickup another few bottles. Oh the scenery is very nice around the brewery, a great afternoon get away or a date afternoon if you are from the city. We really enjoyed our visit to Rockmill Brewery. The brewery is located in a beautiful setting with a large outdoor area next to a pond. There is not a lot of indoor seating so I would recommend reservations. They had a nice selection of beer with about 15 taps. Staff was knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. Food menu was fairly limited with a focus on pizza. Our pizza order came out cold, but the staff quickly had another one made and made sure it came out hot. This is the perfect getaway. My friends and I spent the entire day here. The service was good, the beers were delicious (I had the cherry sour and a saison noir). The property itself is gorgeous, sitting by the pond talking watching dogs play. The little chapel adds character too. Inside, the renovated barn is great too and makes you feel right at home. Must visit brewery in Ohio. (East of Columbus in Lancaster) To get here you take a few winding country roads lined with corn fields and apple orchards. The brewery itself sits on a property off the road, accompanied by a large grassy backyard with a pond and lots of tree coverage. It's absolutely beautiful here. The building is a lodge with a intimate and homey feel, the esthetics are cabin-like with dim lighting, clean white walls, and exposed espresso-wood framework. There's a loft that overlooks the bar and first floor. Inside there's lots of room for seating, aside from the loft, there's a high top table and bar seats, a nook with an oversized leather couch, coffee table fireplace, and then in the "living room" space there's more tables and a sitting area with more comfy leather couches. Outside there's a gorgeous patio with 5-6 small tables. Then there's spacious grassy back yard, with a few picnic tables under the trees. The yard itself is perfect for a blanket and picnic basket. As I mentioned, there's a little pond, as well as large mature trees for shade and lots of flowers. The beer is all ordered inside at the bar area, they have the standard craft glass or they offer flights as well. The third option, if you know what you love, is to buy a bottle to share and get a few glasses. The beer menu is extensive, suitable for all pallets, hoppy and not. They lean toward a Belgium style brew and offer 13 different beers. Food wise- they had a food truck when we were there and it sounded like these come and go based on the day. We also found out they have a full kitchen open for public use, so you could bring food to cook and enjoy. This is one of those out of the way, day-trip multi-stop destinations. Rockmill Brewery does Belgian-style beers, presumably because the mineral content of the water in this part of Ohio matches that in Belgium. (So I've heard, no authority on rumor here.) Their beer is available in many places around Columbus (Seventh Son, Philco to name two), but by far Rockmill brews are meant to be enjoyed in a rustic farmhouse overlooking a lake and stream. Other folks came through, but the space is separated out very nicely (with lofts and smaller areas) so you feel like you have the place to yourself. We gathered our flights of three (Dubbel, Saison and Saison Noir for the spouse and the Trippel, Wit, and Petite Saison for me) and relaxed by the fireplace. I enjoy how smooth Belgian beers are, without all that bite that seems to be the rage now. The Petite Saison was especially nice. If you're looking to pair your drinks with food, you'll want to bring your own (I'd recommend the Harvest Moon Cafe in Canal Winchester) and give over to the brew masters' recommendations. They do have pretzels on offer if you need a little something to go with your drink. This place isn't that hard to get to, especially with the bypass (but I grew up in the area), and it's a great stopover on the way to or from the Hocking Hills. You'll be glad you did. read more

Living nearby, I've been coming to Rockmill for quite a while. I've seen their beer list grow, and watch their customer base grow. In short, I couldn't be happier for them. This is a great place in visit. Get a flight to same their brews, then get a glass of your favorite and enjoy the surroundings. They are in what used to be a barn. Great job they have done with the place. Comfortable and classy. If it's warm enough out, take your glass outside and enjoy the grounds. Walk around the pond. Look at the tiny chapel. However, they don't serve food. So please keep this in mind. You are encouraged to bring your own food. To me, I think it's a great idea to bring finger food/h'or dourves/whatever. As Rockmill's popularity has increased, so has the traffic indoors. So sometimes you might have to wait a bit for a seat. Thanks isn't bad, it is just a side effect of Rockmill's increasing popularity. Rockmill Brewery is one of my happy places, and not just because they have great beer (although they do, without a doubt, have great beer). The large farmhouse tasting room is like a treasure trove of comfortable cubbies to curl up in. Each nook and cranny has an oddball chair, piece of yard-sale furniture, set-in booth, or beat-up chairs to swallow you up and never let you get up again. There's always a spot to have some semi-privacy with your companions, as well as larger spaces where you can gather with groups. The homey barnwood feeling is accentuated by the local cats, the light pouring in the many windows, and the folksy art and decor. The bar area is relatively small; they serve only their own brews, on tap or out of bottles. They have roughly a dozen beers, with the exact lineup varying by season with certain ones always on tap. Flights are available. They do not serve food, and so encourage you to bring your own. I've seen families set up whole potluck dinners on the long farmhouse table in the main room, or spread blankets and have picnics in the spacious backyard. Ah yes, the yard. A long expanse of green grass ending in a pond and a creek for splashing. The patio is spacious with a firepit and seating. There's always a spot to put up your feet and enjoy the sunshine. I have on occasion brought my laptop down and spent the afternoon writing in a corner, enjoying beer and sandwiches, and it's heaven. We often stop here on the way back from a hiking outing in Hocking Hills. The newly-opened Tavern in Columbus is a great place to try their beer, but if you really want the full experience, you've got to come to the brewery. read more

It's hard to describe how fond I am of Rockmill Brewery. I grew up nearby and my school bus used to drive under rockmill covered bridge every morning, so when I heard the adjacent horse farm was turning into a brewery I was excited to check it out. I went with family and early with my first impression I've been so in love with RB! Immediately the owners gave us a tour of their brewery, my family and I started swinging by on Saturday nights with snacks. I grew to love it more as I realized I knew the family (small town) and got to know them more. I absolutely ADORE Judy, the owner, who helped me plan my rehearsal dinner here. I can't stress enough how perfect the location was to bring all of my out of state (and in state) friends for our rehearsal dinner. Plus, costs are low since we could BYO-food. Other reasons to love it: Spacious outdoor patio with teeny tiny chapel Nooks inside, or curl up next to a fireplace Nice people, both customers and staff Great ambient or indie tunes Kitties (Noir is my favorite) become friends Wifi Meditative vibes Animal friendly DELICIOUS BEER! Delicious strong beer! Every time I'm visiting my folks in Ohio, I try to stop by either to catch up with friends, hang out with family or just to sample whatever is on tap (and take some home!).
