My dream was to have a book inspired photoshoot and she happily let us use luminary for the shoot. This was my first time learning of the bookshop as I'm new to town and so happy to have found it. I love Cathy M. who is sometimes at the counter there. She is knowledgeable about books and everything local. A very nice person, as are they all. Of course I will get rid of books then cruise the aisles here looking for more. The selection is wide; the store is well organized and labelled by category signs hanging from the ceiling. Only one thing lacks. They need a library cat. Aside from that. This is a great little spot and the money you spend there goes to Sierra Resource Center which helps residents in need. At first we thought it was closed because all of the lights were off. But the main door was unlocked and we entered. There was 3 people sitting at the table in the middle of the store - they stared us down but didn't say a word. We wondered the entire store which was primarily books, movies/dvds/VHS & furniture, with a few odds and ends. I think my definition of "gift store" is different than theirs because I didn't see much that I would categorize in that department. The odor in this store was the usual thrift store aroma, with a splash of...something very unpleasant. We saw what looked like a music venue in the back with a few guys talking really loudly from that area. After wondering the store, we started to work our way to the front when one of the gentleman practically ran to follow us out. When we looked back at him, he pulled out his key and dangled it indicating he was locking the door behind us, still not saying a single word to us. Out of probably 5 people in that store, not a single one said anything to us. If they were closed, they should have locked the door behind them - it was Saturday late morning.... I would label this more as a used book/music/movie store. I definitely won't waste my time here again. Such a weird experience!

The shelves were brimming and there was plenty of staff on hand to help find things and answer questions. Normally, I am an independent bookstore supporter and I do still buy the majority of my books from smaller independent booksellers. Unfortunately, I haven't found an independent bookstore in Nevada -- North or South -- that compares to the likes of Vroman's in Pasadena (if you have a recommendation, I am all ears). That said, if you are in the Reno area and want a brick and mortar bookstore with a huge selection, this is the place. And they do offer some decent discounts, so keep an eye out for the books that have been marked down. I was able to pick up a first edition of Patti Smith's new memoir at 50% off!

Even though our visit was fruitless (book-wise, not drink-wise), we still had a positive shopping experience.

And I absolutely love, that I can pre-order (signed) books (from local authors) and I can pick them up, or have them shipped to me. While I have been mostly picking up signed books, over the last few months, I recently pre-ordered a book by a non- local. It was wrapped and shipped beautifully, and Word After Word Books has become my first choice for print book buying. If I can get the book here, I will absolutely do so. And downstairs is a record store. Amazing! So warm and friendly. Located in historic downtown Truckee, it couldn't be more charming.
