Wow, this place is popular! We were there the Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend and there was a steady line coming in the door. We sat inside and forget to check out the back patio. Simple menu, either tacos or quesadillas, not burritos. They had many sodas and beers to choice from for drinks. Maybe wine? The interior and exterior looks new and inviting. I've been back several times and worked my way through the rest of the meat options. They're all fine. The disappointing part continues to be the salsas. They're odd (the green one with a dusty flavor) or one dimensional (the red). Hands down, the best tacos on Whidbey!! I have been wanting to eat here for some time and finally had the opportunity to and OH EMMM GEEE!! I had the chicken, sweet potato/black been & Al pastor tacos; that come with a side of smoky beans. Portion, flavors...genius. We always make a point to visit this local taco joint when we're on Whidbey Island. The food is good and the patio is wonderful. We were sad to see that the lawn seating is no longer available and they have removed the outdoor games (foosball and corn hole). This honestly might make us go elsewhere. Part of the experience for us was sitting on the lawn and enjoying the games. The food remains delicious, but the atmosphere + food combo was what made this place really special. This is an excellent taco restaurant. I've eaten here several times, usually getting food to go. It may not be exactly the style that abuela (grandma) used to make; but that's not what this review is about. First, and some might think foremost, the corn tortillas are excellent. The fillings are excellent too. My two favorites are carnitas, and guajillo spiced beef. For two, or more people the taco family pack is a good idea. It comes with twelve tortillas; but, you can order extra. The beans are very tasty too. If you've got a good appetite, don't ignore the tortilla soup. It's thick, pleasantly spicy, and tasty. Unfortunately pozole, which is also excellent, isn't currently on the menu at the Freeland WA location. I was really excited to get some fish tacos while visiting Whidbey Island so I looked up taco spots and landed here. Sadly I didn't enjoy my fish tacos and after two bites decided I couldn't eat them - the fish felt soggy and the coconut crema was not good. I was extra disappointed because when you order tacos here you have to get three of the same type, you can't mix and match so I was stuck with three tacos I didn't want to eat. The chips and guacamole also had very little flavor. However, my partner enjoyed his beef tacos. When I asked if they had a restroom the staff pointed outside to a very gross porta-potty set up. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food is what counts, and this place does it right! They make their own slow-roasted pork and chicken and it is delicious! Tender, juicy and flavorful meat packs a burrito so much so, you'll have leftovers for lunch the next day. I recommend you ask to have it cut in half because the pork, rice, beans and cheese was a lot for one meal. It was very flavorful and filling. I ordered a chicken enchilada which was yummy. It had the slow roasted tasty chicken with cheese. The order came with fresh, smokey flavor, baked beans, and I mean fresh because you can tell they soaked their own beans, pico de Gallo, also made fresh, and sour cream, but I think it's actually crema, but I'm not sure how to spell it. My husband ordered an Arnold Palmer. I think I spelled his name wrong, so golf enthusiast can correct me! LOL but they mixed the fresh ice-tea and homemade lemonade together in front of us to make the drink. It tasted great! We ordered and paid for it online. The food was ready for pick up when we arrived. The food from online orders is bagged and placed on a table with a receipt which has your name on it. Remember to ask for your drink as the drinks are not left on the table with the hot food. The outdoor dining was open when we arrived for pick-up. The server was very nice. Probably about as good as you're going to get for fresh and creative Mexican food. Great vegan/vegetarian options as well. My husband ordered the squash tacos and they were amazingly good. I ordered the cod tacos and they elevated them with pineapple salsa with a coconut cream sauce. Just so creative. As good as those were, I still wish I had noticed the chickpea taco special. Came here during the heat dome and it was so nice and cool in the shade! Arrived around 11:30am, ordered a salad (fish) and 3 traditional tacos (carnitas). My husband liked his tacos, and he's pretty picky about his tacos. Polished them off before I could take a pic. My salad was amazing and the grilled fish was sooooo good! The wife and I took a chance and tried this place. We were headed to the island for a weekend stay and we usually go to some other places we've learned to love from previous visits. The hostess was super sweet, and helped us decide what to order. My wife got tacos and HOLY WOW, i didn't expect them to be so good. The taco holder/container was super badass too, more places need to use them IMO. I went with a carnitas burrito and I'm not lying, the best I've ever had so far. Rocket Taco exceeded my expectations! Stopped here while spending an afternoon on Whidbey and wanting some lunch. They have a great outdoor patio with a gas fireplace, which kept us warm. I got the Griddled Cod tacos and they were delicious, especially the tortillas! Service was fast, friendly. There were lots of vegetarian options and some delicious sounding daily specials as well. We stopped by for some lunch after playing at a local park. The prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get. The quesadilla was huge! Definitely more than enough food for a quick lunch. I have only had tacos one other time that were this good since moving from LA. The Saint in downtown seattle closed which left us sad. Coming to Rocket Taco we were so impressed and delighted. I have not had a taco I didn't like and at this point I've tried them all. The beans are bland but won't change my rating because they're just beans... the pot de creme is also delicious! Stopped by this place during a recent trip to Whidbey Island. Good Yelp reviews had me waiting for something special. I was not disappointed! Had the carnitas tacos, which were outstanding. Came with a cup of pinto beans, equally delicious. But here's what was truly amazing: Their premade margaritas! Now, "ritas" can be a bit tricky to do well, and lots of places make them either too sweet or too tart with lime, or add too much (often cheap) tequila. Rocket Taco has figured out how to make the perfectly-balanced margarita. This might be one of the better ones in the Pacific Northwest! Their menu includes many other intriguing options to order on future visits. Give this place a try, and if the weather's nice, dine "al fresco" on their patio. This is definitely on my "go to" list for Whidbey, and based on this experience, I am already planning to visit their sister shop on Capitol Hill. You should too! :-) read more

Ohmygoodness this place is a hidden gem!! I had been craving fish tacos for a few days (I'm 27 weeks pregnant, don't judge me ) anyways with Cinco De Mayo I couldn't find anywhere cause they were either sold out or the lines wrapped around the building. I decided to try this place out since I was in the neighborhood. I was hesitant at first especially when they told me the fish was grilled, they had a pineapple salsa, and coconut dressing ( it didn't appeal to me at first) let me tell you though, they DID NOT disappoint! I took one bite and was completely blown away, they were so good and all of it complimented each other so well. I'd post pictures but I ate it all, already haha. Service was great. Front counter person was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. I was in later in the day so don't really know anything about the ambiance as only one other couple was there. Food is where they really took the knock. I ordered tacos pastor (pork with pineapple). They really should not offer these if they are not going to at least try and be authentic. Nowhere in Mexico would they consider serving these with CANNED pineapple. The pineapple is meant to give a tartish sweet dimension. These were strait up sugary sweet (pineapple canned in syrup sweet). Won't go back. Really disappointing as people in my office speak highly of this place. read more

We LOVE Rocket Taco! Everything is absolutely delicious but my two main suggestions are the taco salad and the potato chorizo quesadilla. However, you cannot go wrong with any of the menu options. Normally I would veer away from a salad at a Mexican restaurant but the taco salad with carnitas is ridiculously good. I've tried most of the dishes except for fish tacos which is on my to-try list this weekend when I visit . Also, always make sure to stop by Whidbey Island Ice Cream which is literally two feet from Rocket Taco to try the double cookie dough ice cream. INSANE. The best pair.
