The Deluxe and Traditional options for tacos create good options for different appetites. It can be crowded and they can at times "sell out" of capacity for takeout so plan ahead if it is tourist season on the island. Great little reassurance in Freeland. The menu is pretty straightforward, and each item offers a selection of protein or vegetarian options. I ordered the basic tacos with chicken with a side of chips (beans are an option as well). Three little chicken tacos came on the platter, each a little bigger than a street taco, and loaded with well seasoned and perfectly cooked chicken. I used both the red salsa as well as the green habanero. Perfect size for a tasty lunch. Although I'm not a fan of the order, pay (with tip option), sit down, then wait fir your food to be delivered to your table, the quick and friendly service made it palatable. Most of the food is really good but a bit more pricey than expected for the portion size. They offer a group of tacos per order but you have to order only one kind, even though there are several flavors from which to choose - no mix/match. The soup was inedible, I thought, and so did our guests. A bit embarrassing as we'd told them it had great tasting food. Loved the fact they kept the pineapple with it and there was a side of beans. There's only two salsas to put on it, a red one that's mild with a smokey flavor and a hot green salsa which just tastes spicy. There's an outside communal patio that they share with rocket taco. Coming from California, I don't think I can give a fair assessment of these tacos. I did try three traditional tacos including carnitas, fish, and beef. I was hoping the fish tacos would be the star of the show because the shop was located by the water, but unfortunately they were my least favorite. The fish tacos were too sweet for my liking. The carnitas and beef tacos were packed with meat. I wish the carnitas were fried and a bit more flavorful. Overall, this place satisfies the taco craving but perhaps not my favorite. read more

I really do not understand how they are at 4 stars. Either I came on a very off day or others really are ridiculously generous. Perhaps there is just no competition here? I got the chicken tacos with pinto beans on the side. The food looks very fresh and there is a lot of meat given. The problem is there is zero flavor present. Nada. It's like they use no spice at all. I tried using the beans in the tacos. Nope. The beans have a tiny flavor but not much. I tried adding the red hot sauce. Just a hint of smoke flavor. I even tried the hot tomatillo sauce. It's hot but no tomatillo flavor. Nothing. I would like to score them higher because the place is clean, fresh and well-priced. Check out their taco salad. It's huge (about right for the price charged) and has good flavor. The only issue is the salsa. During my call in order the nice server asked if I wanted salsa with the salad and I said yes, a couple since I like salsa. The salsa containers (there were two, thanks) are teeny tiny! The ones that hold maybe two tablespoons! This for a full plate size salad? Really? Come on. We popped in to place an order to go here when we were visiting friends last month. The services was fast and friendly. I got the sweet potato and black bean tacos based on a previous review that said they weren't spicy at all. I was so glad I got them! I don't do well with spice and there was very little heat. My stomach had zero issues with them and they were so very tasty! I can't remember what my husband got? But he loved it. My husband and I have been customers for years. We have raved about the taco salad with griddled cod, al pastor, carnitas, and amazing margaritas at this cute little shop across from Payless. Until today... What the hell happened? I get my salad, it looks beautiful! Presentation on point, and I dig into the rubberiest unseasoned piece of fish. It died of freezer burn, no amount of coaxing is going to revive flavor or texture. You may as well have put a dog treat in the salad. The raspberry lemonade margarita could use some work too. Rocket Taco called the police on me while having lunch there with my adult daughter. Apparently, as I was at the counter taking in the overwhelming cognitive load that is their handwritten chalkboard menu, I apologized for having to slowly scan the menu offerings and explained that it was our first time. "Our first time" -- Some sick person with an overactive imagination perceived me as having ill intentions and that my adult daughter accompanying me may be in a compromised position; a 49-year old man was there to make "our first time" special with salty tacos and a bland margarita. Eww. Concern from this person(s) lead to the manager calling the police and an awkward and unwelcome visit by an Island County sheriff's deputy. The officer had my name, which could have only been provided by restaurant staff from the debit card transaction; providing this was a violation of my privacy. The deputy was also rolling his eyes the entire time because the claim was ridiculous -- a total waste of county time and resources. He mentioned the basis of the call was someone hearing me say it was "our first time" and getting really uncomfy. I live in Kitsap county and have been coming to Whidbey Island for decades, and yes, this was our first time to Rocket Taco. It is certainly our last. I'm not sure whether I'm more disappointed in whomever took absolutely nothing and ran with it, or that the management did no due diligence to see if the concern was valid or baseless before calling the police. We were an hour into our 6th annual Dadventure Week where my daughter and I do overnight kayak trips to islands, rock climb, camp, hit old haunts and all the dairy freezes we can find and this is how we start. What a warm welcome to Rocket Taco, welcome to Freeland, welcome to Whidbey Island!! On the other hand, as the father of a daughter I do appreciate that someone was willing to say something if they saw something. What the person saw in this case was a ridiculous waste of everyone's time, has created bad will for Rocket Taco, and was a terrible start to this edition of Dadventure Week. So fresh, so delicious, so filling - yum! Rocket Taco is our go-to for tasty flavorful tacos on Whidbey. I love that they have vegan options. I recently enjoyed a 3-taco plate with chickpea/cauliflower tacos (hold the lime crema to make it vegan) and they were sooo good. The jamaica (hibiscus) drink was delish and had an herbaceous twist to it. The only thing I *wish* was that they allowed you to mix 'n match tacos. Not sure why they don't offer this. read more

When we moved to the island, this was the first restaurant we ate at. That was in pre-Covid times; you could have a conversation with loud background noise, and read lips. You could shake hands with a neighbor. You could sit down at an inside table and eat without fear of killing your self or your relatives. I love that they use compostables here. We sat outside as per requirement, wet tables, wet chairs, no heat lamps on a cold and drizzly January afternoon...missing star is because of this; if you offer outdoor seating, make it comfortable for Pete's sake. One of the few restaurants in Freeland. We grabbed lunch to go here while we were staying at an Air B-N-B near by. The place is cute and there is outside seating. There's a small parking lot. I ordered the taco salad for my friend and I got the regular salad with beef. Probably not ideal for a to go order as there are chips in the salad and it gets a little soggy. Rocket Taco is a great spot in Whidbey! My boyfriend and I come here every time we pass it. and are never really disappointed. They have a lot of really good salsa options, which is great at a taco place. The meats are really good and the tortillas are amazingly yummy. I've had better tacos in Seattle, but at very few places. My one complaint from Rocket Taco was the chicken tortilla soup. I'm a big fan usually, but Rocket Taco's is a bit underwhelming. So while I can't recommend that on the menu, I haven't been disappointed by anything else! SIDE NOTE- in pre COVID times they had corn hole and an open backyard space in the summer when I went one time with some really nice outdoor seating. The overall experience was really enjoyable, along with just the food.
