My first time back to Rocket Science in about a decade and it's under new ownership. What hasn't changed is the gorgeous, spacious salon and the quality and value of services offered. I never intentionally stopped coming here for my cuts, but life and its distractions happen. I was in desperate need of a cut before vacation and saw that the legendary Jo works here now so I quickly got an online appointment. I didn't need anything special this go around, just a trim and something that would work if and when I feel like wearing extensions again. In and out in under 45 minutes! I love my haircut, as well as the fact that this salon is just steps from where I live. The price is more than fair at 80 dollars, which doesn't seem like it's more than what I paid a decade. read more

I feel like I was punished going here. Like what did I do wrong? Stylist pretended like she couldn't understand a word I was saying so she just cut everything shorter with no technique or style. GLYNN is my dream come true hairstylist! as someone with very thick hair and unruly curls she is the first person in my 25 years of living to really tame my hair. She knew exactly how to cut and style it to give me lively bouncy waves and curls that need minimal effort on my part. she's a miracle worker and alsone of the sweetest people alive. although she's never colored my hair personally she has for friends of mine and the results were stunning. cannot recommendation enough!! Perfect pedicure from Miss Charlotte at Rocket Science Salon~ wonderful personalized attention to detail, she also focused on some rough spots on my feet as well as scrub and relaxing massage. Easy conversation, I felt so pampered. Super personable assistant at the front desk, we were able to be fit in as walk ins. We were served a complimentary beverage, diverse magazine selection, cool recommendations on where to head to next. Couldn't be happier with the service and locale. read more

When I sat down in Savannah's chair yesterday, I simply said, "I've been Paris Parkered to death!" That means, in case you are not familiar, I am THROUGH with boring, "safe" haircuts. I chose Rocket Science based on Yelp reviews, and Savannah because she is the owner . . . I think that's the best way to get a salon's "vision." In her words (well, I'm paraphrasing), she trained the other stylists, so they know the same stuff, but they are all very creative and have their own way of doing things. The salon itself is really nice . . . very roomy, with a lot of natural light, and furnished adorably. I agree with Jess R . . . I wanted to move in! (plus, it's much cleaner than my place is after Mardi Gras . . .) From the shampoo (which was really fun, thanks to a rousing conversation about Jeff Goldblum) to the consultation, to the cut itself, to the style, this salon is the perfect combination of fun and professionalism. And they really are so creative! I sat down, explained my hair type and "round face issues," and Savannah basically asked me, "Do you mind if I chop some of this up, and how do you feel about looking like a rock star?" Well, I am not afraid of scissors, and the one thing I have tried to beat into the heads of other nameless stylists is, "I wanna look like a rock star!" So, I knew we were set. :-) Oh, and another thing . . . every other stylist I have visited in the past few years has told me the same thing: "You can't have bangs. Your forehead is too small." (I guess that makes it a threehead?) When I told Savannah this, she simply said, "Bullshit. There are bangs for everyone just like there is a blonde for everyone." And you know what? She was definitely right in my case! She gave me the most awesome side bangs EVER, and the whole cut is just incredible. I started out with long, straight hair (almost all one length, and BORING), and now I have a cute, funky STYLE that actually flatters my face! I cannot say enough good things about this salon, and Savannah. If I didn't have a wonky event planner schedule, I would have booked my next appointment before leaving the salon. You can bet I'll be back the minute it is time for my next cut . . . FINALLY, I have found the right salon, after years of "meh." Oh, and when I can afford to color my hair in wild hues, I will be back for that too. These girls are gutsy, and they have skills! If you're looking for a new stylist, RUN, don't walk. I mean it. I can't say enough nice things about them. And check out the before and after pics I'm posting if you don't believe me! read more

Yep. I love this place. Updating my review after having now been to Rocket Science three times - all for a haircut - with a fourth appointment coming up in a few days for some funky new color. The space is gorgeous. I've been seriously considering just showing up one of these days, laptop in hand, and claiming a spot on the couch as my "office." It's a bit odd, yes, but I've gotten the impression they'd totally be cool with me squatting there to do work. Even if I don't follow through on that plan, I love Rocket Science because the ambiance makes sitting still for 1-2 hours almost bearable. (As you can imagine, sitting still is not something that comes easily to someone like me...) My first haircut was FANTASTIC, and I've decided that Kat is definitely my new stylist. She's awesome about talking me through to a decision when I come in with no clue as to what I want done with my hair. The second time I went in for a haircut, I ended up seeing someone else, and I wasn't as happy with the result. I've found that oftentimes I end up disappointed when I go to get a cut/color, but don't have a solid plan for the stylist. As a result, I end up giving vague instructions, and inevitably I'm not happy with my hair. But Kat is totally able to handle that kind of situation, and I love that she's able to help me come up with an idea when I literally haven't the foggiest notion of what I want, other than something new and different. So, two appointments in one week. Got my hair cut last night (for $49), and I'm going in later this week for color (which will be $75, I'm told, based on the partial highlight/dying the tips of my hair platinum blonde plan we came up with.) You've earned that fifth star, Rocket Science. Keep being awesome! read more

It usually takes me a while to find a hairstylist that I love. I just moved to New Orleans from Austin and was really worried that it would forever to find one I like here. Just got back from my most recent (3rd) haircut with kat at Rocket Science. It's such an enoyable experience, and I love how I look when I walk out. Let me first start off in saying what a great experience I had here. The environment was comforting and fun, all the stylists were down to earth, and I definitely left at the end of the day with a smile on my face. I'm in the process of growing out my pixie cut, and getting my mullet tamed was the main reason in booking this appointment. My hair is at an awkward length bellow my ears and above my chin, and since I'm growing it out, my hair stylist, Andrea, ensured me a cut that was pleasant to grow out and yet still complimenting to my face. She also did something I thought I would never be able to pull off in 100 years. We dyed my hair purple, and trust me, words cannot express just how much I adore my new color. She kept my roots brown to make it easier to manage as I grown out my hair, and I'm just in love with the finished product. It took roughly 2 &1/2 hours for my whole cut and color, but time just flew by with there being so many friendly faces to talk to. The end product is just want I wanted, effortlessly vibrant purple with shades of silver. I just cannot expressed how wonderful it turned out. I can't thank Andrea enough. read more

I felt lucky to be squeezed into a cancelled appointment to get a trim before a trip. Several inches of hair, a dry cut, and being visibly devastated later, I have a dry, unruly mullet. I told the stylist I didn't like it and she said it would "grow out nicely" and that hair is a renewable resource. I'm going on my honeymoon, I look like Joe Dirt, and my wallet is about $70 lighter for it. Enter at your own risk. read more

New to New Orleans, and was looking for a reliable place to get my acrylic nails filled. After digging through Yelp reviews at other salons, I decided to make an appointment with Paris - and was not disappointed!!! Make sure to make a reservation because she is the only person who does nails (acrylic or not) at the salon, but she was awesome! Paris was very friendly and welcoming, and professional at the same time. She was quick, and did a fantastic job. If you have acrylic nails, you know it can be hard to find someone who does a good job shaping and filling the nails, especially at the cuticle. Additionally, I also get gel on top of the acrylic, which again, Paris was very clean and professional about. I really couldn't find anything wrong with the way she did my nails - and I'm very picky. I only got them done yesterday, but the nail beds look like they're going to grow out very nicely, which is one of the most satisfying parts of finding Paris! Additionally, she has a large collection of regular and gel nail polishes, and she is always adding. Last but not least, you can't beat the price! $30 for a fill and gel, which, in my book, is a steal. I will certainly be back!! read more

Best. Salon. Ever. No, really. EVER. I'm visiting NOLA from NYC, and knew that my calico/hodgepodge/mess of layers of colors (including BLACK) needed professional help, so I looked up listings for salons that might be particularly adept with color correction, and I landed on Rocket Science (way to go with previous reviews, kids). From the initial phone call with Savannah, to the "Welcome! How about a beer?" [correct answer = yes], to the consult and careful lightening work with Keely, to the cut from Shannon, I was in expert, fun, sweet, smart hands the entire afternoon. I've been to a LOT of different salons and stylists over the years, for color, cuts and more, and I do not actually think I can recall an experience where I felt more at home than Rocket Science. Oh, and my hair looks killer to boot. Boom. read more

Nice salon in the Marigny area. I'm still fairly new to New Orleans, and any lady can vouch for me, finding a new hair salon is tough. I have to say, though, I was pretty pleased with my services here. I appreciated that I was able to make an appointment the evening before rather than having to wait weeks to be seen. They offer a nice selection of cruelty free products which I think is great. Davines and Kevin Murphy products are all displayed neatly in addition to a few other brands. I walked out with a great cut and color that I didn't hate and my hair smelled beyond amazing. They are a bit pricey, but in my experience, you get what you pay for; a trip to the salon is no different. read more

I typically don't leave reviews but I felt compelled. Rarely do you find a regular professional who's company you actually enjoy when you go there. Nobody likes dentists, does anybody even see a doctor anymore, and don't get me started on mechanics. But coming here is a breath of fresh hair. They're knowledgeable, polite, funny and everyone knows their stuff. I never really go in expecting anything less than a great cut and they've never failed. I used to just walk-in, but now the Lady Keeley has the keys to my head. She can do whatever she wants to my hair and every-time I'm sitting in that chair I'm thinking man what's it gonna look like; but she never fails. I always get complements post cut, and find myself excited for my hair to grow. And frankly that attention to detail, you can't put a price on. read more

It's always a little scary to go to a new salon. Being from out of town, this place was recommended to my friend and I. Both of us had absolutely perfect colors on our root touch ups. Brittany got an exact match on my friend's red hair, and Daniella did a truly amazing job with my hard-to-handle thick curly blonde hair. Not only was the final color great, but she totally fixed a weird orangey band left by the last stylist at home. Daniella is a miracle worker! The salon is adorable and pleasant, great product ranges, definitely coming back. read more

I have had great experiences at Rocket Science. I am only in NOLA part time but have gone to Rocket several times when my travel schedule doesn't afford me time to get a cut before I travel. The staff is very friendly, the place is incredibly clean and well maintained, and my stylist Keeley has given me some of the best haircuts I have ever had. She does a great job of listening to me and cutting my hair the way I want. There are some reviews here that say this place is expensive - I have a bit of a different perspective not being a FT NOLA resident, but the prices are very reasonable compared to what I pay elsewhere. I recommend Rocket to anyone looking for a great hairstyle in a great environment. Keeley is the best so ask for her!! read more

I used to love this salon, and I want to still love it but after multiple bad experiences I have to go elsewhere and recommend others do the same. Maybe it depends on which stylist you get. I did get one fabulous cut here but otherwise every time I leave I don't have what I wanted when I came in despite extensive communication and photos. My last straw was taking my 15-year old step-daughter in and having her come home crying with a cut that looked nothing like the photos she had taken in and a head full of sticky hairspray. And to add insult to injury the cuts are very expensive starting at $75 + tip. For that kind of cash every stylist should be making sure that people are happy with their hair. I really was excited to get my hair cut at this New Orleans salon that everyone rants and raves about. I went to a new stylist that just moved here. I don't want to trash her she was very nice I just have a few issues. My cut is nothing like the four photos I brought in My cut is uneven AF My cut doesn't suit my thick hair or hair's texture My hair is so flipping short I can't do anything to it much less trust another person with a scissor I have never hated a cut this whole heartedly in my entire life. I still can't look in the mirror without shedding tears. Worst 49.00 plus 10.00 tip I ever spent. Do your research on stylist please. read more

I can't tell you all the agita that comes with talking about my hair. Let's suffice it to this: Humidity is not my friend. From the moment I saw sullen and surly junior-high aged girls walking down Canal Street with wigs borrowed from their Mama 'cause their hair won't do right from April-October, I knew I'd have problems down in the Big Easy. Cut to Rocket Science. This funky sliver of stylistic goodness lies in the Marigny, where Savannah and her crew of professionals work their magic. And by magic, I mean free-flowing, swinging follicles that don't frizz in the heat and/or moisture that falls from the sky. It's given me the strength to keep growing my hair out. When someone asks me, 'Is that YOUR hair?' then I'll know we've achieved ultimate success - I can't wait. read more

I went into the Rocket Science Beauty Bar to get my set of acrylic nails removed, I walked in and Jeanne (Hope I spelled that right!) Was able to squeeze me in. She was great! The set I had on was thick, cracked and uneven on some nails. She was able to take most of the acrylic off with soaking in acetone and filing/buffing it off. She was so gentle and did not hurt me at all! In the past I've had a salon peel off my nails and I didn't know any better at the time. Jeanne made sure she wasn't leaving me with screwed up weak nails. And even though I took the acrylics off my nails still look healthy and not all chewed up. Jeanne was careful and spent about an hour on my nails! She was only going to change me like $10 or $15 too! I gave her a $20. She also sent me home with the acetone she had used on me as well as some buffers so I could work on my nails more at home. In addition to what she did for my nails, I loved chatting with her during that hour. I'm just visiting New Orleans for the week and we talked about the history of the city, the best local bars, and how different the lifestyle is here as opposed to other cities. She was knowledgeable and humorous. If I lived in the city this would be my regular stop for hair and nails! read more

2 years after moving to New Orleans, I finally find someone who knows how to deal with my stick-straight blah-colored hair. Yay for Savannah! She was exceptionally helpful, especially since I had no idea what to do with my hair. All I knew is that I wanted a change in style and some highlights. After discussing it for a while, we came up with a plan, and she went to it. The highlights look great, and so does the cut! It's still stick straight, but now at least has some personality and texture to it... and it's definitely far from blah-colored. Love it!!! I'll be back. Oh, and you can book appointments online, so that's a plus. Also, note that they will be moving to a new location within the next month or so.. read more

I decided to come here to cut off permed hair (better known as a BIG CHOP) they turned my nervous transition into an almost spiritual awakening. Katherine gave me the best hair cut I've ever had. Love this place. Love it. LOVE it. After letting my hair grow out for one too many months, I went loking for a salon to give me that new style that said "hey, look at me!". The one I found gave me a style that said something like "hey, look at that poodle dressed like a lady!" So I turned to Rocket Science for help... and I got it, in spades. When I walked in for my scheduled appointment the person I was supposed to be meeting with was still busy with another client. Rather than making me wait, another stylist (Katherine) offered to cut my hair right away. She was fantastic! She listened to what I wanted, made me look amazing, and did it in under 30 minutes. So I've waited to write this review because it pains me to give a bad review to service places, but it's easier to get over a bad meal at a restaurant than it is to get over a disappointing hair experience. I went to Dara based on the reviews I read on Yelp for a cut and color. She was very friendly, personable, etc but she did not cover my grey hair. When I booked the appointment online I said I needed my greys covered. When I was in the chair I pointed them out again. When I left they were still there. I called two days later after contemplating writing a scalding review on Yelp, but figured that wouldn't really help my hair situation, nor would it get me my money's worth. I think I spoke with Savannah the salon owner and she told me to come back and they'd fix the problem by using another formula and/or applying heat to set the color (like most places do). I almost considered buying a box of color and doing the roots missed myself. She told me that she didn't suggest I do that, so I made an appt to come back after a trip I planned. My hair was supposed to be perfect for my trip and it wasn't. So, I went back yesterday and Dara covered the stubborn grey hair by applying a stronger formula to my roots, no heat. I wasn't about to tell her how to do her job. But I did speak up when she nonchalantly applied the color around my crown without looking to make sure they were all covered. I had to insist that she missed some because she didn't part my hair at the front to look for the rest. She finally got them after I directed her where to apply the color more thoroughly. This is was the moment I decided I wouldn't be coming back to this salon. The staff seem young and not as professional or as skilled as the place I'm used to going. I gave it two stars because they were professional enough to right this wrong. read more

I GOT BANGS! they're so now! Everyone at this place is a genius and they should be the first hair salon in space. I was super worried about getting bangs and cutting my hair shorter and now I basically am just about to sign my contract with Pantene Pro V and Victoria's Secret. Dara is amazing. Erin is a sweetheart. I want to be friends with all these girls but they are way too cool for me. Great location and my sister went a few days later to get her hair ombre'd and they did a FANTASTIC job. I am a crazy person about my hair, I'm super protective and nuts about it and I can safely say I will never go anywhere else. Also, if you go get the Chi Pearl Complex serum it smells like angel farts and will make your hair feel like a unicorn tail, which if you have ever touched a unicorn tail, you know is really soft and luxurious. read more

Dear Savannah, Erin, and Melissa: We love you. For Erin M.'s wedding party "ladies getting ready at the salon together" staff, we really couldn't have asked for a better experience or better stylists/cosmotologists. Seriously cool ladies. Rocket Science reminds me of a less snobby Milio's (Chicago), or a bigger, less metal Hair Metal (Brooklyn). All of the ladies are tattooed, have crazy colored hair, and/or know what it IS. They did a great job of turning us rufians into pretty Southern belles for the wedding - and of avoiding the inevitable bouffants we would have received elsewhere. Erin's hair looks seriously amazing in all of her photos (so did mine and bridemaid-Erin's, but especially bride-Erin's). The most awesome thing was that while we each had various appointments, bridesmaid-Erin and I didn't have makeup appointments, and cosmotologist-Erin (there were so many Erins... so... many... Erins...) took us anyway and did an absolutely beautiful job in no time at all. Everything was just so casual and easy breezy - and these ladies at Rocket Science are performing miracles, all like it's no big deal! Oh, and it was INCREDIBLY reasonably priced. Everyone we worked with was professional, sweet, and entertaining. Even though we all came from up north and had never set food in Rocket Science in our lives, we may as well have been their friends already. It was super comfortable and super fun. I was explaining to Melissa, who did an amazing job with my hair, and Savannah, the owner and bride-Erin's stylist, that my hair had just been cut and colored at Hair Metal here in Brooklyn, and they admired it genuinely and gave suggestions about retaining the red, a difficult color to keep. They were totally professional and helpful. When I left (the Erins had gone in search of jambalaya of course), cosmotologist-Erin told me to make sure we all stopped in next time we were in New Orleans. This, people, is why I belong in the South. They're seriously the coolest, sweetest people of all time! If I could give more than 5 stars to Rocket Science, I would. If I lived in New Orleans this would definitely be my salon. Thanks sooooo much ladies, we will definitely be spreading the word about your awesome. xx read more

I was in New Orleans from NYC for my wedding. Abby did my hair and Erin did my makeup. I was very nervous as we only communicated via emails (me being in NYC and arriving two days before my wedding). Both the owner Savannah and Abby emailed me a few times answering my questions and instructing me on how to prepare my hair, what to wear to the salon that day and where to get some flowers for my hair..My now husbands only request was - please dont let them make you look like its not you haha. Well both ladies were AMAZING!! I really dont have a lot of hair.. its past my shoulders but its very thin. Abby did a fantastic job. I brought with me some mini white roses and she just came up with the most beautiful retro style. She was kind, gracious, happy and she got the talent for it!! Erin did my makeup. She listened to my concerns and made me look like me haha. They are not expensive - (me coming from NYC where I would spend over $500 probably) $150. They called for a taxi and made sure I am good until I got in it and drove away. My husband loved the hair and makeup :) We are planning to move to New Orleans and I will be seeing the ladies all the time as I am in love in them!!
