The mansion is breathtaking it is unbelievable with the 100 year old details and exquisite details in every room. When you go for this tour Juan loves to share the knowledge and information about the family and the details. I don't want to give too much away because you really need to visit! But Tiffany stained glass throughout the house, leather wallpaper, and so much more. This mansion was made before its time and is a masterpiece! We went for a birthday celebration and I am so happy for this experience. Great bed and breakfast, unlike any other bed and breakfast. If you enjoy historical places, this is one to visit. This gives you an opportunity to see what life was like back in the day, from the plumbing in the bathrooms to the old light fixtures and so much more. Juan and Warren are great hosts. Upon checking in at four, you receive a tour of the home. Afterwards the hosts share a Wine and Cheese reception with their guests and afterwards you are able to explore the home on your own. There are some important things you need to know about Rockcliffe Mansion, if you want to save yourself a lot of embarrassment and discomfort on your trip, especially if you have never stayed at a B&B before. Apologies for the length, but these are things you should know. Also, be advised that some of the 5-star reviews are only about the tour. We were trying to get away for a relaxing couple of days to celebrate my birthday. We started our road trip in southern Missouri on the Great River Road, and followed it to Hannibal at a leisurely, unstructured pace, stopping at little shops and restaurants along the way. It began as a delightful trip. Our first night was spent in Ste. Genevieve in a charming old loft with a lovely host. We planned to continue at the same easy pace and arrive at Rockcliffe Mansion the evening of the second day. HERE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW: If you book a room here, you will receive more than two pages of rules and regulations, in fine print. I hate to do this to you, but you must read EVERY SINGLE WORD. You will be really sorry if you don't. I only skimmed it, and that was a big mistake. Having never stayed at a B&B before, we assumed the 4:00 pm check-in meant our room would not be ready before 4:00. Had I read all of the rules, I would have known that we were expected to arrive at 4:00 pm ON THE DOT, but not one second before. If arriving after 5:00, we were supposed to call or text. Also, there was a wine and cheese reception from 5-6 pm that we had missed, which I'm sure was also frowned upon. All of this confusion was my fault for not reading all of the rules more closely. At 4:20 pm, I received a phone call asking for our ETA, which was going to be around 6:00. We were asked to call 5 minutes before arriving so that someone could come downstairs and let us in. Since I wasn't yet aware of our serious faux pas, we were a little confused by our host's frosty reception when we arrived. Compliments on the furnishings and fixtures were mostly unacknowledged, and it seemed pretty obvious to us that we had done something wrong. Our hosts were Warren and Juan, but we didn't officially meet Juan until the following day. Warren showed us a few things about our room and bathroom that needed explanation. Coffee and tea are available after 7:30. After that, more rules. Breakfast is served at 8:30 sharp. We were told there would be a complimentary guided tour of the mansion beginning promptly at 10:00 am, and it did not feel optional. There are other tours throughout the day, and apparently we were actually supposed to have taken the one at 4:00 pm the previous day (while also not arriving one second earlier). The mansion is very old with original furniture and fixtures, which really add to the charm. Vintage photos on the walls show how the rooms looked at the turn of the century, and many of the fixtures in the photos are the same today, which is wonderful to see. With the exception of the breakfast room, there is almost nothing on the main level that you can touch or sit on. Everything is either roped off or has a KEEP OFF sign. We were told that there is absolutely no food or drink allowed in our room other than bottled water, which was also mentioned in the lengthy list of rules. There is complimentary bottled water in the breakfast room, and we were told that each guest may have ONE. After that, all that is available is tap water that tastes like the river. Because the following day was my birthday, we had brought a nice bottle of wine to enjoy in our room, but here that is verboten. I understand the reason, since the furnishings are old, but it was a disappointment nonetheless. Our room was cooled by a window AC unit, but the rest of the house was stifling. I like to sleep a little later when I'm on vacation, and I'm not a breakfast eater, but after our check-in experience, I just assumed anything with a start time was required, so I set an alarm and went down for breakfast. This is an "eat what they feed you" situation, so there are no actual choices. I tried to eat a few bites, but it wasn't very good, and it was just too early for me. After breakfast, we packed our car to leave, but before leaving we arrived promptly for the 10:00 am tour. Not long before the tour ended, I began to feel sick from the breakfast and the heat, so I had to rush to the breakfast room for a chair I could actually sit on, followed by a rush to the bathroom. My husband informed Warren that I was ill, and we left. We didn't even bother doing any of the other things we had planned in Hannibal that day, which was disappointing. At this point, we just wanted the "vacation" to be over. If this sounds like the kind of vacation you're looking for, you will love Rockcliffe Mansion. The bed and breakfast experience is obviously not for us. I'm glad we tried it, but we prefer a more relaxed, laid-back vacation, and this was just too rigid and regimented for our liking. read more

Just over 123 years after the construction of the Rockcliffe Mansion was complete, my better half and I had a chance to stay overnight in the beautiful Anne Louise's Chamber. It was an experience that we will forever remember. The Mansion sits on a hill - The highest point in Hannibal that offers breathtaking views of the town, river, and gorgeous fall foliage below. It was an appetizer before entering the doors of the Mansion. The owners, Warren & Juan, greeted us and made us feel welcomed right away. Our stay included a complimentary comprehensive and informative guided tour of the Mansion by Warren. His animation and enthusiasm bring the place to life. At the end of the tour, he brought us to our room and demonstrated how to operate the door locks, shower, and more. It seems like a "no-brainer" nowadays, but remember, this place is over 123 years old, and things were much different then with absolute ingenuity, quality, and solidness. After we checked into our room, we went downstairs to the historic kitchen to join Warren, Juan, and other guests for wine, cheese, crackers, and incredible conversation. It was fantastic getting to know them and the other guests. It was a time of warmth and laughter. Our room was tremendous - Comfortable and unique. I couldn't help but look at the pictures and paintings and reflect on the history of that family and the stories behind them all. We felt like welcomed guests of the Cruikshank family. After a magnificent night's sleep, we again joined everyone in the elegant formal dining room for a three-course breakfast prepared by Juan that included coffee, orange juice, and a variety of teas. We were presented with a plate of mixed fruits and a bowl of yogurt topped with fruit and granola. The main course was delicious and included Quiche, hashed browns, ham, and bacon. It was an absolutely perfect weekend for my girlfriend and I. Thank you to Warren and Juan for making this an indelible experience for us both! read more

Don't skip doing this guided tour. If you are on the fence, trust me and just GO! Several rooms can also be rented out as part of their Bed & Breakfast operation. This is the most intact mansion I've seen right down to most furnishings and even some clothing left in the closets. It is just stunning and the guide had great, history information about the house and original owners. It is still being renovated so the outside is in sore need of paint and the grounds could use reinventing of garden beds. But don't let that influence your decision to go inside or not. Just GO and enjoy this spectacular place! read more

Touring Rockcliffe was a highlight of our Hannibal visit! Many have mentioned Juan- he is a very knowledgeable tour guide. I enjoyed listening to him describe some of the restoration decisions- he is passionate about his work and the quality and integrity of the restoration. The top floor housed the staff and what was a large ball room. Juan himself hung the wallpaper on the walls and ceilings of the Ball Room and the Governess's bedroom. The papers are gorgeous and the design of all of the borders and details is intricate. Anyone who has ever hung wallpaper can only imagine the attention to detail that had to be applied to this labor of love. There are many beautiful rooms and details to appreciate in this house, not the least of which is the huge Tiffany window. What great hosts! They did everything possible to make our visit an interesting and comfortable experience. We learned that when the mansion was built around 1900, it featured beyond state of the art electrical and mechanical features and the interiors and furnishings were, and still are, impressive. It is worthwhile going out of your way to make this part of your road trip. The 30 room Victorian mansion is well situated on a high limestone bluff overlooking the Mississippi. I urge you to take the tour and learn about the mansion's unusual history (and near destruction). If you can, spend the night. A wine and cheese social hour on the porch and a large delicious breakfast in the dining room are included (along with the tour). We hope to return some day. read more

I am very thankful for the owner(s) to have saved this beautiful home with all the amazing history tucked inside. I am grateful they allow tours so we can enjoy it but have realistic restrictions to protect it. The idea it has so many original pieces still inside makes me nervous between the tours and BnB...but apparently they are doing a great job protecting it. I read some comment on the appearance of the outside...it is amazing and they are working on restoring it so if the outside bothers you, go toss some cash their way so they can finish it quicker. We stayed at the Rockcliffe Mansion in Mr. Cruikshank's Chamber on a Monday night late in September. There was already a chill in the air and beginning of the change of the color of the leaves associated with the fall weather. The front entrance was very impressive as we drove up to the top of the steep hill where the mansion set. We strolled up the entrance door where an interesting set of steps were available to accommodate people getting in and out of carriages. After we rang the doorbell, a very interesting gentleman (Juan) answered the door and began talking to us with a very heavy accent. We could tell that the tour of the mansion was going to be interesting and entertaining. He did an amazing job with the tour of the home and we learned a lot about the history of both the home and family. After the tour of the whole impressive home of original furnishings, we checked into our room. Then we had wine, cheese, nuts, and grapes in the kitchen (which was one of my favorite rooms) and was where we met Warren. Both gentlemen had very interesting stories about their trials and successes of restoring the home and plans for future developments and projects. We had dinner at one of the downtown Hannibal restaurants. However, it didn't compare to the breakfast that followed the next morning at the Rockcliffe. We had coffee at 7:30 am and then a four course breakfast at 8:30 of homemade banana bread, yogurt, fruit, ham, bacon, egg/vegetable omelet, fried potatoes, juices, and coffee. Wow! This is a beautiful Mansion! The mother and daughter who owned the Mansion decided to move to their house next door. They closed up their Mansion and left it sitting for 43 years. Everything in tact. The city decided that it was becoming an eye sore so they gave the Mom and daughter an ultimatum. Do something with it or have it demolished. Aren't we glad that they sold it and it is now a Bed and Breakfast and museum. The luxury of the Mansion can be seen by the Tiffany lamps and Tiffany glass paned windows, electric lighting and gold dust in the wall paper. This is a MUST SEE! read more

Our first visit to Hannibal to visit the historical sites brought us to this incredible mansion. Since we were staying the night, we thought that this would be an excellent opportunity to enjoy the bed & breakfast there as well. We took the last mansion tour of the day before our stay. The owner allowed us all the time we needed to take pictures and answered all questions we had. It is a beautiful home with great history and worth a tour even if you don't intend to spend the night. Bed & breakfast guests were treated to wine & cheese served on the front porch after the last tour of the day. This was just the beginning of the experience that made you feel like you were stepping back in time, as pleasant conversation and meeting others in a relaxing atmosphere was a great haven from the downtown bustle. The soft bed in Anne Louise's Chamber where we stayed made for a very restful night. Woke up to have a cup of coffee out on the front porch before the grandest breakfast I had ever seen served up in the formal dining room. I left well rested with a full stomach, along with some homemade bread to take with me. If you truly enjoy history, or if you just want to feel like royalty for a day, I would highly recommend this place. If we ever go back to Hannibal, we will definitely come back here. read more

Firstly, I apologize to the wonderful owners, for taking so long to write this review. I honestly thought I had written it and lo and behold, I sent some friends to the site and nothing!! So here goes...my husband and I moved to Missouri in March and we've tried to visit interesting places when we have weekends off together. My husband fancies himself an adventurous navigator, someone who can take us to local joints that are close enough to reach in a couple of hours. He found the Rockcliffe Mansion and off we went....it was a B and B from heaven, run by a couple of gentlemen, Warren and Juan, who are the epitome of what excellent hosts should be. It was the beginning of August and man it was hot...so hot and sticky that when my husband found out that we were just going to make the tour that is given daily, I decided to pass. I wanted to do it, the mind was willing, but my old grandma butt felt close to passing out. We were staying the night, but it was about 30 minutes to early to check in, so before the tour started, I told one of the owners that I was going to wait in the car. Keep in mind that it was about 90' and 100% humidity. He must have seen the white look on my sunburned face because he quickly told me it was okay to check in a little early. There are two floors you can stay on, the middle floor with the large, fancier rooms which once belonged to the original owner and his wife. The third floor is where we stayed, a much smaller room but still, very lovely room. We had our own restroom which was situated in the hall. I believe all the rooms have their own restrooms. The bed was comfortable, the floor very quiet and when the rain started, it was heavenly. That evening, the owners put out a beautiful spread of wine, cheese, and fruit. The next morning, we awakened to an absolutely lovely breakfast, delicisous and spot on. Now here's the best part, over the years we've stayed in many bread and breakfasts, some awesome, some terrible and overpriced. On top of that, once you check in for the night, you are relegated to your room for the evening...no wandering around quietly, checking out the art, taking pictures. Once the owners are done for the evening here in at the Rockcliff, you are welcome to nosey around almost all the house, except the places that are definitely off limits (basement, attic) and rooms that other guests might be staying in. We came in late from a haunted cemetery tour and were able to gain entrance quite easily. Once we were cleaned up and ready for bed, my husband decided to poke around. He went in several of the rooms, scared himself silly in one of them and came back a happy camper. This B and B is not only fairly priced, it is lovingly cared for and it shows.The owners have great pride in their establishment. Is it perfect structurally? No, she could use a little more lipstick and rouge on the outside, but the inside is charming. Please note, If you have bad knees, you may want to stay on the second floor but you will pay a bit more for your room. The showers are all clawfoot tubs so be aware you have to be able to get in and out carefully. Thank you for a wonderful weekend gentlemen, it was a delightful weekend! read more

We walked from the historic area around Main Street in Hannibal, up Bird Street to the mansion. It is mostly an up-hill walk, but it was fun and interesting to see the area. Upon our arrival we joined a tour of the mansion led by Becky. She was a wonderful guide who really knew a lot about both the house and the original family. Touring the mansion is definitely worth the $15 fee. The mansion offers nightly bed and breakfast. The grounds are beautiful. My husband and I stayed at Rockcliffe Mansion in early August 2019 for our first trip to Missouri. Not being a true "B&B Girl" I have to say it was one of the best lodging experiences I've ever had. (And I'm in the travel industry so I travel A LOT.) The house, built in the Georgian Revival style of the era is a literal historic time capsule! Our stay started with a one-hour tour of the mansion which still boasts many of its original furniture, wall coverings, lighting fixtures, bathroom fixtures, books, clothing and personal artifacts belonging to the John J. Cruikshank, Jr., family. Cruikshank was a lumber baron who built the home as a showplace for his family's wealth and hearing the story of how this mansion came to be is important to the experience you'll have. The amazing thing is how long the home sat empty and that it and its contents were not completely destroyed by looters or even the city of Hannibal! Owners, Warren & Juan have restored the interior and there is ongoing restoration to the exterior now aimed at maintaining the mansion in its original turn-of-the-century state. Warren & Juan were friendly and engaging but the best part of meeting them was the AMAZING breakfast prepared for us on Saturday morning before we checked out! And, if you're a piano player like me, they were gracious enough to allow me to play a tune on the Steinway Grand piano in the mansion's music room. read more
