Brandy was the star of our last stay! She was so kind and helpful and refreshed our towels and bathroom daily! We booked 4 nights and designated a first floor room as the others were booked. The entrance is in the alley way. The key stuck in the door each time we tried to use and it getting in was difficult. The air conditioning is a window unit. There is also an iodizer that was running that sounded like a vacuum cleaner. Bathrooms are older. We didn't have an actual bathroom vanity/sink and used the kitchenette sink. The walls were pretty thin, and we could hear our neighbors often and chatter from the alley and parking lot. The beds were comfy and the room was clean! The restaurant was honestly strange. It's a steakhouse but has a lot of pub seating and tables cannot be moved. Prices were reasonable but food is served in diner style baskets with paper (not a steakhouse vibe). Severs were kind but unorganized. My salad had a lot of wilted lettuce, but baked potato and steak kabob was good. We wouldn't go back.

We had no idea where our room was. My husband looked in the restaurant to the left and saw a girl and asked if she could tell us where our room and the elevator was. She said there is no elevator and said go out back behind the hotel and take the stairs. She was obviously busy with the restaurant. Our room was upstairs and you have to go out the back of the building and climb stairs. It was pouring rain and dark out. We had a cooler, luggage and hanging dress clothes to lug up the stairs. We got in our room and my husband said $191.00 a night for this!!! We couldn't get the A/C or heat to work in the living room. There is a tiny remote and we couldn't figure it out. This must have been an old attic that was turned into rooms using blonde pine. The floors are so tilted and uneven it was hard to walk, it gave you a drunk feeling. There is a sign on your door that you can turn over that said something like clean our room so I turned it to that but no one ever came to provide fresh towels or clean the rooms. We were given 2 rough towels, 2 washcloths and a hand towel. The "closet was just a short bar to hang your clothes on. Luckily we brought some of our clothes on hangers because there was only 1 tiny hanger and it was for pants. The only other places to put clothes were in the one drawer of the nightstand. There is a picture of the inside of the drawers. There is a metal stand to put your luggage on but it was so rickety that it kept leaning so we couldn't use it. When we went to leave we couldn't get the door to lock. We have a Schlage code lock at home but it isn't like this one. I called both numbers on the sheet of paper and both went to voice mail. I texted one number, Brandy, and told her we were having problems getting the door to lock. She said instructions were on the sheet of paper. I still couldn't get it to lock. We had to leave for our function, when we got back the door was still unlocked. I texted her and told her that but never heard back. How can you run a hotel with no one there??? Two other rooms were rented by friends and family. When I asked what they thought of the hotel they just laughed. When we checked out of our room there was no one at the desk.

They gave me a 10% off discount for being a veteran. Check in is at the coffee house counter. The person working the day of our arrival was friendly, kind and professional and made the process simple and easy. Navigation into the park is a bit tricky, as it sits on a fast moving truck route highway so caution is advised. GPS takes you past the entrance and requires a Uturn when traveling from the east. If you turn at the cross over exit just before the uturn it takes you right into the park. Making entrance much easier. Gravel packed roads throughout the park are a little tight in places. A long pull through with FHU and shade trees on both sides of our rig. Split utilities, water on one side with power and drainage on the other. It made hooking up a bit more complicated but we made it work. Relatively level gravel site, a little on the thin side. I had to adjust my rig a couple times to get it where the slides could be opened all the way. Once I got the rig squared into the site it was okay. We could not open our main awning all the way because of a close tree lower branches. We adjusted again and made it work. This park has river frontage on the Salt river, which made for a nice break floating on the river one day. There are a lot of outside activities here, tetherball, volleyball, rental kayvaks, an outdoor music stage, walking trails, a boat ramp and the then river itself. Our site was fairly comfortable for our visit, the shade trees made a huge difference. There are a lot of long term campers in this park, so spaces are limited for overnight and pass through travelers. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. The highway noise is significant at the front of the property. Where we were, you could here trucks going by all night. Ear plugs or white noise is necessary to cancel the road noise out at night. 3.5 Stars rounded up for the kind desk staff and working with me to adjust our stay 01309

Very much a definition of a tourist attraction, the Mark Twain Cave in Hannibal, MO ended up being…read morea worthwhile stop for my wife and me during Day 4 of our Mississippi River/Upper Midwest road trip. The stop was one of those places where I planned as a possibility if we had time and made sense, so didn't buy tickets upfront and thus paid the full adult price ($29.99 pp) when we got there. Other tours at the attraction included a guided tour of the Cameron Cave, a trolley tour, and Mark Twain Live Show. The Cameron Cave is the sister cave of this one, kept much more in a natural state (so more appropriate for visitors who come to visit a cave vs a museum for Samuel Clemens) , only open during the summer, and has almost twice the number of passages. We bought our tickets just as the 60 minute tour was starting, so we were hurriedly ushered into the starting theater where the short movie was ending. There was one other couple in our tour, and it was nice that our group was so small. Our guide was a young man who made up for his lack of knowledge in some areas with a lot of enthusiasm. The history of the discovery of the cave was given. He guided us around various areas (some a bit tight) and showed how dark the cave was without artificial light (would not want to be down here without a flashlight)...definitely brought to life some of the scenes I read in 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer'. It also showed how children during that time would play in the cave without adult supervision... made me think of how my lack of sense of direction would have been a big problem. The cave is privately owned, and was declared a National Landmark in 1972. Part of the tour included seeing the famous people who had visited the cave as part of previous tours, leaving signatures. Our guide mentioned that 'Darth Vader' had left his mark there, but couldn't tell us who the actor was. Later I learned that it was Spencer Wilding, who portrayed the Sith Lord in 'Rogue One'...for my generation, Darth Vader is David Prowse (physical) and the iconic James Earl Jones (voice). It was a consistent 55 degrees in the cave which was a nice relief from the outside heat. We also learned how the cave was used for town meetings when it got really hot, and the places where children would doodle and pass time as their parents would deal with the town problems of the day. As we left, we entered a modern room with more information about the history of the cave as well as some small mockups of the passages. The exit led to the same gift shop where we bought our tickets. As we exited, we noticed a set-up for the Mark Twain Mining company, where kids of all ages could prospect for valuable minerals in the 'river'. We came during the low season so it wasn't running. We went to Mark Twain's home as an adult and father in Connecticut last year around this time, so was nice to come to Hannibal to see his childhood home, and experience a little bit of his childhood by coming to this cave and the tourism that surrounds it.
