I stayed here for a couple of nights and absolutely loved it! It was my first official B&B experience, and it definitely did not disappoint. The host, Angela, was so friendly and helpful about Hannibal recommendations. The breakfast was great, and I felt like I was in a quaint cafe! I delayed on my review because I really needed to contemplate our experience. A very unique stay at an old mansion that has been preserved with such great detail. I was able to peek into other rooms available and there were many we wouldn't mind staying at again. We adored that each floor had a coffee table with an assortment of options. Outside of each floor was a basket of potential forgotten beauty items, such as a toothbrush or toothpaste. Always a nice touch. Downstairs had a snack and drink nook that was available at all hours. Each room had a different theme along with additional amenities, like fuzzy robes and beauty necessities. With all that being said, we only had one night away as a couple and would've loved to have enjoyed the peace and quiet, but the room next to us was rented to a younger couple with two small children. We listened to them cry about bedtime routines and were then awoken before 7am to more tears and sadness. I am well aware as a parent myself, that children are just that. Maybe the B&B should've considered renting a separate room to these guests, possibly on a different floor/adjacent space, considering we were the only two guests checked for the one evening. We were told not to worry about noise, because you couldn't hear a thing in between rooms. This was definitely not the case. We went down for breakfast at 8:30 only to be sat waiting with the young toddlers and their behavior all around the dining room. I now completely understand why other B&B's we've stayed at before have a 'no children' policy. We were expecting, from the reviews, an amazing breakfast, not two burnt pancakes with one strawberry and a handful of blueberries, served an hour past the breakfast time. The cottage was nice however we could not get the tv or sound system working. We texted the inn keeper and no one responded. The breakfast was cold eggs, toast, a yogurt parfait and grape juice. I was not impressed. This cottage is way overpriced for what you get. Also this is a very run down area. read more

Still a big fan of Garth Woodside Mansion. My wife and I wanted to get away for the weekend (this past June) and this was the perfect place to do it and relax. While staying at the Garth Mansion, my wife and I also did some tourist things in Hannibal, MO, and learned more history about the area. I do have to say, Julie and John, the owners of the Mansion, make you feel welcome and a part of their family. If you are looking to get away from all the craziness going on right now, I would recommend spending a day or two at the Mansion. This is a nice B&B and you won't be let down. By the way, breakfast is pretty dang good there. read more

A must stay! An Experience! I would definitely recommend the Garth Woodside Mansion for a stay if you're passing through this historical river city area. A hidden gem tucked outside Hannibal far enough to avoid the riff-raf. Courtyard views, historic staircase photo opportunities, beautiful decor, and stories of the author Mark Twain in the Samuel Clemens room. Antique furniture is spread throughout the building and even some of the mansions original pieces are intact. The service was wonderful as well. John and Julie are great people with in interest in building the community in their spare time. I'm glad to support such a nice couple and their dream. In the morning after breakfast make sure and grab a carrot to feed the llama and alpaca, (we had to look up the difference between the two). They are definitely a great touch to the farm. If you are looking for a place away from the normal tourist traps away from city life. Check this one out for sure! read more

Stayed at the B&B for a weekend getaway with my wife. The accommodations are beautiful and well maintained. We enjoyed breakfast each day and walked around the grounds when not sightseeing in Hannibal. The owner was very nice and friendly and touring the house overall was wonderful. We stayed in a cottage and it was quite private and relaxing. I think this is probably the best B&B I have stayed at. I highly recommend it and will definitely stay here again on future trips to Hannibal. read more

This is, by far, the best B&B in which we've ever stayed (which was February of 2007). It is a huge mansion tucked way back in the woods of Hannibal. The rooms are cozy and wonderfully decorated with antique furniture and paintings. We stayed in the Rosewood room which had an attached bathroom with a very large claw-foot bathtub that fit two comfortably. They provide an excellent breakfast. In fact, all the food they served us was excellent! They open the dining room to the public for dinner in the evening. So, even if you're staying there, you have to reserve a table. And you'll definitely want to do so. The dinner is magnificent and worth the price (which is a little high). But you're on a weekend getaway, live it up! read more

What are you looking for in a bed and breakfast? Chances are it is probably here. Rooms are cute and well provisioned. The common areas in the mansion have a lot of history to them (although you probably wouldn't want to hang out in the period furniture pieces - I always felt that I was on the verge of breaking them), and the proprietors Julie and John after a good long while doing this are professional innkeepers (friendly without being friends), and entirely competent at their functions. Breakfast, for example, is thoughtfully designed and prepared. Culinary talent is in evidence and second helpings are on offer. I'd be willing to try dinner, although we did not on this trip. The level of service is very good. The property is in a constant state of improvement. There is a decent walking trail that loops through the woods. One can view the llamas and alapacas from the dining room. There are rocking chairs to relax in on the porch, as well as a fulsome lawn at the front. The rocking chairs are one of the few places to lounge about, if rocking chairs are your thing. Better to bring a blanket and enjoy the lawn, methinks. By hiring help to clean the rooms, help bus tables, and maintain the property things are kept in good repair. Twain aficionados will appreciate the history. read more

We were given a weekend away from our girls after they had weddings 3 months apart. Garth Woodside thinks of everything from toothbrushes to the most amazing breakfasts. The gentleman who showed us around was friendly and able to direct us where to eat in town and tell us the best times to go. We were able to relax in front of the fireplace of in the loft watching tv. After a day out and about it was a pleasant surprise to return to a tray of crackers, cheese, and chocolate. We will definitely stay there again and recommend it to everyone! read more

The best bed & breakfast we've ever stayed at, without question. We stayed here many times (on average 3 or 4 a year for several years), in the mansion, and most enjoyably, in the Dowager cottage. Not only are the accommodations top-notch, the company is great (friendly and helpful when you want it, but quick to know when to leave you alone when you're looking for a bit of quiet or romance). After our first visit, we stopped even going into Hannibal and just took in the cabin, surrounding area, llamas, and interesting guests. On our last visit, I asked my (now) wife to marry me. Missing this B&B was one of the hardest parts about moving away from the area, and we still keep up with the Julie and her son Julie on Facebook, hoping to come back someday soon. read more

My wife and I recently stayed here in the Woodside room. The house and grounds are absolutely gorgeous, and both Julie and John are absolutely wonderful people and hosts.Many other hosts seem like they are just phoning it in or putting on an act, but you can tell these two are genuinely personable and enjoy what they do. Just enjoyed our 4th time visiting this historic and enchanting B&B. Started coming here years ago with my now husband, and it was wonderful as a couple's getaway. But this time we visited Hannibal for the first time with our kids - a 1 year old and almost 4 year old - and the Garth was equally as charming for kids. We stayed in one of the cottages, and my son loved going into the mansion to play board games, visiting the llama and al pacas, and just walking around the grounds. It was nice to give the kids a unique experience but also feel welcome with kids. Also, the breakfast is plentiful and yummy! read more

We had a lovely stay at the Garth Woodside Mansion with our family of five. My husband and I love learning about the history of such locations and this mansion did not disappoint. Not only is it beautiful, but John gives a wonderful tour with fascinating historic detail. The food was great and Julie was very welcoming, making you feel like a special guest in her home. She makes a point to sincerely connect with each guest. Our young children enjoyed the grounds, including the beautiful large tree swing and the llamas! EXCELLENT! We have stayed at the Garth 10 times over the years. I can't say enough about the gorgeous mansion, beautiful grounds, gracious hosts, gourmet food, and romantic atmosphere. It is a PERFECT weekend getaway. The more you talk to John & Julie the more you will fall in love with them as innkeepers. The mansion will take you back in time, slow down, relax and enjoy each other. It is like you are in a DREAM state! And the beds are so comfy they are to die for!! This is the BEST B&B we have stayed at and we have stayed at over 15 different ones in various states. We liked Garth so much we keep going back and have been there over a dozen times in the last 15 years. The innkeepers were very nice and made you feel right at home right down to the chocolate chip cookies they had waiting for you when you arrived. The rooms are clean and the feather beds very comfortable. The food is outstanding with a wonderful breakfast prepared for you each morning that is far better than anywhere else we have ever stayed. The price is not cheap but then you get what you pay for. I am more than happy to pay for the quality service and great atmosphere that you get when you stay at Garth. If you go to Hannibal you have to stay there or you will be missing the best B&B in the area! read more
