The staff were the loveliest people, and so passionate about their wines. They also do generous pours for the wine tasting, which is much appreciated! I am primarily a dry wine drinker. During my wine tasting at Rockbridge Vineyard, I sought out the driest wines they offered, but even the dry wines were too sweet for my palate. If you like sweet wine, you will love this wine! Nevertheless, I did take home a bottle of Jeremiah's, which is their wine that's made with concord grapes. It's definitely a sweet wine. I shared it with some people who love the sweets, so I didn't drink as much. Along with wine tasting, they offer wine slushies and little appetizers to purchase, like locally made cheeses, salami, crackers, chips and popcorn. The food is limited to cheese and chartreuse, but they frequently have food trucks, especially at the week end. Service was nice, but the real standout is the views of the vines. On our way home from Virginia Beach my Mr and I wanted to stop by Rockbridge Vineyard since they have both wine and beer. Something for the both us. We read the reviews and looked at their website. I was impressed with their wine list. Mostly DRY (which I am a huge fan of) and some semi sweet wines. It's only one mile off the highway exit. Once we got there I was amazed by how big the farm was. Acres of vineyards and gorgeous scenery. Plenty of outdoor seating. Both the tap room and wine room offer flights. They do not have a kitchen, however there are different varietal of local cheeses, crackers, salami, and prosciutto you can pair with your wines. We did both the white and red flight: Pinot noir blanc de noir Rockbridge Chardonnay Riesling vignoles DeChiel Riesling Rockbridge Pinot noir Extra Virginia Claret DeChiel Cabernet franc DeChiel meritage Mountain View Farms Gouda (name of the cheese we purchased to pair with our wines) My fave wines that I had to purchase bottles to take home: Pinot Noir Blanc De Noir, Riesling Vignoles, Extra Virginia Claret, DeChiel Cabernet Franc, Ice wine. I got glasses of Syrah, Reserve Pinot Noir, and the Tuscarora red. It was so nice out that we enjoyed them out on the patio. My Mr wanted to try their beer flight. They also brew their beers on site. You know that feeling when you're leaving your vacation spot, but you're still in vacation mode, so you wanna make one more stop before facing the crushing reality of going back home? Rockbridge was that last stop for my lady and I after leaving Virginia Beach, and let me tell you, it was totally worth the stop. A winery AND a brewery? To paraphrase Phillip J. Fry from Futurama, "Shut up and take our money!" The place is less than two miles from I-64, so you won't get lost getting there, and the vineyard is very impressive in its size. Inside the main building, which houses the wine tasting area and brewery taproom, is very spacious with lots of seating. Even more seating is available outside with a wonderful view of the vineyards. They also have different merch to buy and snacks if you get a little hungry while enjoying the libations. My lady and I started in the wine area with a couple flights and a cheese board featuring locally made gouda. The wines we had were: Pinot noir blanc de noir Rockbridge Chardonnay Riesling vignoles DeChiel Riesling Rockbridge Pinot noir Extra Virginia Claret DeChiel Cabernet franc DeChiel meritage All the wines were excellent and the tasting room attendant was very friendly and knowledgeable. Plus the gouda went very well with all of it. Afterwards, knowing me as a beer geek, I had to check out the taproom to see what it had to offer. They're definitely a small batch brewery, but what they brew, they really do well. The beertender was very friendly and definitely a beer geek too. They had eight beers on tap and I decided to try a flight of six: Pale Ale Hazy IPA Pilsner Mexican Lager Winter Porter Nitro Coffee Stout I was very impressed with all of them, especially the pilsner and hazy IPA. I really liked that they did howlers, growlers, AND crowlers, because I planned to take one home with us. Plus my lady wanted to bring home some wines. After we were all done, we got five bottles (Pinot Noir Blanc De Noir, Riesling Vignoles, Extra Virginia Claret, DeChiel Cabernet Franc, Ice wine) and a crowler of pilsner plus some other goodies from the merch area. I had to get out of the house! We decided to take a drive into the mountains just to clear our heads after being in quarantine for 2 months. We stumbled upon this quaint little winery that sits on a farm. It had a very rustic feel. They offered curbside wine and social distance seating. The picnic tables were scattered all around the property so consumers could have a safe distance. Of course the tasting room was closed and you could only purchase wine by the glass or bottle. I would like to say this place made me feel juman again. With out mask, sanitizer and gloves I purchased 3 bottles of wine and my cousin purchased 3. We drank one bottle while we were there. My husband enjoyed a glass of Jeremiah so we had to purchase a bottle. It was a little sweet for me. I enjoyed the Rose' it was semi-off dry and very refreshing. We also, purchased the Riesling. The owners are very welcoming and knowledgeable! The wine is cost efficient. They average at $12-$15 a bottle. They even have sales so a few bottles were as low as $9 dollars. If you're ever in Rockbridge ,VA I would highly recommend this place. read more

We really enjoyed this vineyard/brewery. It was great they had both options as one of our friends preferred beer over wine. Two of my friends got the Rose and it was so tasty - perfect balance of dry and sweet. I got one of the reds that had currant berries and it was sooo good. It was $31 which is more than what I would typically pay but I heard that was a good price for a bottle at a winery. The outdoor space was really lovely - tables on the porch and tables in the grass. Cheap wine, free tasting, and (eventually) good service. I just wish the wines were better. I hesitate to call them 'big', but at 8-9000 cases/year and 18 acres, they are bigger than many Virginia wineries. When I visited, their small tasting area was packed and LOUD. From the look of it, they are expanding or upgrading the tasting room, so only part of it was available. I tried to get a tasting, but the first person to serve me (not the manager or owner, someone else) was less than helpful. Eventually the crowds moved on and a different person took over my tasting, so things improved. The tasting menu is quite extensive, and the most expensive wine was $25. So if you're looking for a place to stock up for a party, this would be it. Unfortunately, most of the wines were middle of the road. A few of the better ones includes the very earth Meritage, light cherry palate Pinot Noir, and a smoky Cab Franc which was different other Francs I'm accustomed to. I will give a special shout-out to one wine that did shine - the $20 V d'or Ice Wine. This very rightfully placed highly in many competitions, even against more expensive wines. Unlike NY ice wines, they freeze the grapes in a freezer, as opposed to letting them naturally get iced over outside. I really don't care HOW they do it, because the result was amazing. read more

Went here after hiking the nearby crab tree falls. Lovely setting; located close to I-81 (but not too close that you're on the highway). Tastings are free (!!!) and service was decent (not the friendliest ever, but knowledgeable, quick, and courteous). Wines were actually good! And price points were some of the lowest I've seen for VA wines (as in, they were competitive with CA) AND the wine was good... win-win. I'd definitely stop back here and would recommend others visit. Very laid back setting; lots of outdoor seating for sipping wine after the tasting. Tasting room itself is a little on the small side (hence the 'efficient' tastings). This place also had toys for kids in the tasting room!! (my 2-year old son loved it) This is probably the most kid-friendly winery I've ever seen in that regards. We bought a couple bottles to take home. When we first looked a the listing of wines for tasting we were a little intimidated - their were 21 wines listed and we had to get back to Roanoke for a surprise birthday party. Lucky for us, the list was cut down to only 14 available wines ... We took part in Rockbridge County's Winter Wanderland. our first stop was the Rockbridge Vineyard and Brewery set amongst an old dairy farm. we met the owner and chatted for a long time and shared many similar stories of life. we listened to live music. took part in their holiday care of food including her delicious leek and barley soup and cheese dip and crackers. listened to live music and enjoyed being amongst the locals (obvious by the hugs to greet the owner) and also those that were also traveling a beautiful part of Virginia. highly recommend. read more

We decided to take a drive in the mountains as a way to "break out" from the quarantine and stumbled upon this family owned vineyard. We made reservations and were able to get a seat with social distancing standards and enjoy the view. We truly enjoyed the family run winery, and it was just our luck, that the owner was the one who served our wine and made awesome recommendations. They have a Rosè that's awesome and a Traminette that's not too sweet. I wish things were open, but given the circumstances, the views of the barn and grounds were enough to break us out of quarantine monotony. If you happen to to stumble across Rockbridge winery like we did, I suggest a bottle of the Vignoles if you like semi-sweet whites, the Rosè Hill Rose for a good blush, and if you are into sweet reds, get the Jeremiah (made from Concord grapes!). read more

Every single time I have come here I am treated poorly. Every single time, instead of a 'hello, welcome to Rockbridge Vineyard' I receive 'ids?'. No hello or warm smile or anything. I may look young but I am local and have been coming here for over 3 years now. This particular time my boyfriend and I stopped by during our Christmas visit home to do a tasting and received no service at all. The lady proceeded to chat up the group she had been giving a tasting while coming over to us in between conversation to just pour tastes from random bottles. Not once were we told what we were tasting or a description. After mentioning this to her the 4th time, we told her that we might as well start over because we have no idea what we've even tasted (and we actually really liked some) - she completely ignored this comment. I would like to mention the other group had five people. 5. This is not busy. And you can never be too busy to be kind. I came in for my first wine tasting ever while I was down in Virginia for a wedding. I know nothing about wine, but even I've heard that Virginia is an up and coming wine region. Though I don't have much to compare it to, Rockbridge Winery was definitely a nice and relaxing way to spend an afternoon. They had a large number of wines available for tasting, and the guy who worked there was more than happy to describe each one to us and answer our extremely uneducated questions. He was very friendly, (it IS the south), and even took us on a tour afterward. The wine wasn't cheap, but it was not super expensive either, as all bottles were between ten and twenty dollars. The tasting room is full of medals they've won, but after looking at their website I suspect those are mainly from instate competitions. After sampling many wines and building up a slight buzz, I purchased three bottles: a white (DeChiel Chardonnay), a red (can't remember off the top of my head), and a rose (Jeremiah, with a bullfrog on the label), for $40 altogether. I loved the Jeremiah, a lovely sweet summer wine! It was wonderful served a week later with vegetarian feast of ratatouille, fava bean toasts, roasted chard stems and baby green salad, all compliments of my weekly food co-op produce. I'd be hard pressed to better complete such a seasonal meal! My parents apparently were not crazy about the chardonnay, but the red was very nice, full flavored but not too bitter. If I wasn't completely broke, I would have further splurged on their delicious ice dessert wine, v d'or, but alas, for another $20 it was not meant to be. I'm not sure what would bring you out to this distant part of Virginia, but if you live in state and enjoy your wine, it'd certainly be worth checking out. read more

NC wines are notoriously sweet, and with Rockbridge being just a 4 hour drive away in Virginia, I walked in assuming we'd be tasting much of the same. To my surprise, there were about 20 bottled varieties on hand, many of them decorated. We were told they specialize in hybrids, as well as a wine produced from a grape that was native to the state (now also grown elsewhere). They do offer a wine made from the muscadine grape (reminiscent of the super-sweet wines back home); but the scope of whites was broader than I expected. Most would suit well as a table wine -- were not that complex, but pleasant and easy to drink. My husband, surprisingly, even favored the whites, not caring for the bouquet of most of the reds. The tasting was entirely complimentary and pretty informative. Our host was the wife of the owner (who mastered in wine-making [where was I when this degree came to be?!) in Cali. She was both nice and helpful. Incredibly, the wines were nearly all priced under $20. We came away with 5 bottles for under $40! The porch outside the tasting room overlooks the vineyards. I was tempted to uncork a bottle and enjoy the picturesque scenery, and if we hadn't been pressed for time I'd have done just that! read more

At first, I thought it was such a quaint, quintessential red barn farm.... until I saw the hills of vines. Oh my! Rockbridge has a shabby-chic presence about themselves that adds to the Southern charm, if I say so myself. I could also easily imagine a small party or wedding catered here. Very picturesque. The tastings were free (WUT?!?!?!?!?) and the tasting room is quite chic- decorated in wine barrel furniture, tables, stools, and bar, this place took re purposing to a new level of awesome! The wines: we discovered Chamborcin and a delicious V'dor (ice wine). So delicious! and great finds in an area I never imagined to be well known for their wines. They almost put Virginia wine on the map! ;))))))) In my humble opinion. These guys run one of the best wineries in the Commonwealth of Virginia. They're 80%+ estate grown, friendly, and run a great shop. I make an annual pilgrimage during a local bluegrass festival in September, and am always happy that I did Solid wines, solid pricing structure, knowledgeable staff - what more could you ask for? We revisited Rockbridge last fall, on a perfect, warm fall Friday afternoon, and the experience was 10 times more pleasant than the previous one. The two ladies working in the tasting room were chatty, informative, and funny. The wine was a lot better than I remembered - maybe the rather negative staff experience during my previous visit clouded my judgment of the wine. They have some wines not found in other Virginia spots, such as a white pinot noir (called "Pinot Noir Blanc,") off dry and perfect for the day we were visiting. For a winery so close to an Interstate (I-81 is only about 2 minutes away), you feel like you're in a different world here. That's what wineries are supposed to do. Favorite winery in VIRGINIA! Hands down. So I had a 2008 Pinot from Rockbridge at a restaurant in Virginia (Vintage Kitchen) about 4 years ago. I fell in love. Bought a case. Vowed I would visit this winery some day. That day was a cold blistery one in December where I visited with my husband and a couple friends. The winery itself is not overly impressive, as it is more of a laid back farm winery, HOWEVER, do not let that fool you. The wine is fantastic. The winemaker really knows what he's doing. He makes the best pinot noir I've ever tasted from Virginia. His unfiltered Syrah is excellent as well. I don't think we've ever had a bad wine here and the owners are so friendly and knowledgeable about the wines. We had to back track a bit to go out of our way and come here but I'm so glad we did. Stopped at 4 wineries on my way back from covington va. This was my favorite of the four. I guess its a little bit off whatever major highway we were one. You pull up and park. We went inside and there was a nice lady - she seemed a little hippyish - with croc sandals and all. But she was real nice. She walked us around and we looked at some grapes and then some large stainless steel things the wine goes into. It was good and all. The tour in some ways was pretty underwhelming but we were pleasantly surprised by the wines. I think we tasted somewhere between 12-15 wines. We both agreed their best wines seemed to be the whites. The tour was free (a bonus) and the place was not portentous at all. They are pretty far out from DC but I'd suggest stopping by if you are in the area. read more
