I originally submitted an inquiry for my daughter Stella's birthday cake outside of the business's normal hours. I absolutely did not expect a response outside of business hours. The owner, however, chose to respond to my inquiry outside of those hours, provided me with the total price, and I responded that I would like to proceed with the order. After that, I received no response. Over the next three days, I emailed twice--once confirming that I wanted to move forward, and again explaining that I was still waiting for a response and hoped to hear back because I did not want to be forced to find another cake company. I was patient and waited during the business's posted hours for a response. After still receiving no communication, I submitted another inquiry because I needed to make sure I could secure a cake for my daughter's first birthday. Eventually, I left a one-star Google review specifically regarding my experience with the lack of communication. That is when I finally received a response. Rather than addressing my concerns about the lack of communication, I was told that because I had left a one-star review, she would no longer accept my business. The response then focused heavily on her posted business hours and the expectation that customers should not expect responses outside of those hours. The irony is that this response ITSELF was sent outside of the posted business hours--the exact thing I was being lectured about. To be clear, I never expected anyone to respond to me outside of business hours. My issue was that I was given a quote, confirmed that I wanted to proceed, and then received no follow-up during the following business days despite multiple attempts to communicate. I understand that small businesses get busy, and I am always willing to be patient. But communication is especially important when someone is trying to book a custom cake for an important event with a deadline. Unfortunately, the way this situation was handled left me feeling that my business was only worth responding to once I publicly expressed my dissatisfaction. I would have much rather had a simple response letting me know whether or not my order could be accommodated. I do have to add, the owners response time since i left a google review has been SPEEDY. After expressing my dissatisfaction the owner has become argumentative. I attached our timeline of communication.. all of which were out of normal business hours, so I just assumed that she replies when she feels like. ? Or only when someone leaves her a negative review. I wasn't planning to leave a review, but I really feel compelled to share this experience. I submitted a request through Christy's website on Saturday for a cake I needed the following Friday. I didn't receive a response until the end of day on Tuesday. I also called her bakery multiple times and had no answer or response-- for 4 days! By that point, I already found another bakery to handle the cake, but had I waited, I would have been left in a very bad position. As a fellow business owner, I don't say this lightly ~ the level of communication here is pretty unacceptable. It takes legit, less than a minute to acknowledge an inquiry and set expectations. A simple "I'm totally booked out" or "I'll follow up" would have demonstrated basic professionalism and respect for a potential client's time and energy. When someone goes out of their way to find your business, fill out your form, and actively try to give you money ~ silence and negligence send a very clear message about how that effort is valued. You haven't earned a client here-- and maybe that doesn't matter to you, but word of mouth is the best form of advertisement, and that matters. My response to Christy's response: It takes less than a minute to fire off an email, or simply answer your phone. There's no such thing as "Easter Monday"-- it's just Monday.
