Well when there isn't much around what do you do? You eat at the only restaurant open and we lucked out. It was good! You have to wait a bit because they make it fresh but it was pretty good food for being out in the middle of nowhere. Fun atmosphere and a crazy store with lots of beer. The crust was thick and the sauce was plenty. read more

One of only two places to eat near City of Rocks, but, y'know what? It's a good one! The pizza here is really good. And being that it's located squarely in the middle of nowhere, it really doesn't have to be! They also have everything else you may have forgotten. Camp stuff, firewood, snacks, and beers. Oh, the beers. They have a pretty respectable selection here, and you can buy 'em by the bottle. We ate here almost every meal while we were rock climbing in "The City" and the staff always treated us like old friends. I went here years ago and I'm just now typing this review because I'm coming back on a climbing trip soon, the stoke is high! read more

Not much food or a restaurant near City of Rocks, the Mecca for climbers! But this place has a brew selection out of site. I feel like I am in Beervana, Portland. I stocked up. Carried my brew off to our camp site. This store is 1-stop just a few things of anything you need from nuts and bolts to milk, chips and other staples you need when traveling. Rock City used to be an auto shop. It has transformed into a pizzeria, awesome beer store with a great selection, boutique locally sourced items, and a small general C-Store, providing the basics for campers at the Smoky Mountain campground and City of Rocks. We forgot coffee and Splenda on our most recent camping trip and drove clear to Malta looking for some. When we got to Rock city, we found basic coffee grounds, hooray! We inquired about some artificial sweetener. Even though they didn't have any for sale, the proprietor graciously, out of the goodness of her heart gave us a small baggie full of Splenda packets from her personal supply. Bless her for her generosity. We of course had to buy beer, and get a really tasty pizza to repay that kindness. We love Rock City, and for sure make stops there every time we go to Almo. read more

This place is really just perfectly located and fills a niche for sure. We stopped here on our seemingly neverending quest for get firewood for our night of camping in City of Rocks. Did they have any? No...they had just sold their last bundle and had more on the way in an hour or so...but we're not holding it against them. Service here was super friendly and they seemed genuinely proud of their little store. They had really good looking sandwiches made fresh on site, but we already had some mediocre sandwiches in the cooler that we'd gotten up in Declo (they ended up being pretty boring; too bad we didn't get a couple more here.) They also had a crazy awesome selection of cold beer, all available as singles so you can mix and match or just get what you need. Hubby picked up two organic beers here! They also had some camping gear and other supplies. This place was hard to track down (couldn't find the reciept from those beers to get the name or address.) They aren't showing up in most of the listings but I did find them listed here (http://iguide.travel/City_of_Rocks_National_Reserve/Eating) and picked the place out on the google street view (driving that camera car around the country must be a blast!) Finding them in person is pretty easy though, as they are right south of the City of Rocks visitors center and north of the turnoff to get into the park. They're down the side street a bit but still visible from the main road - a big red sided store and there's a Rock City sign out at the turnoff. read more

Rock City has been a welcome addition to the small town of Almo. Now locals and out of town climbers have a place to go for good grub, epic beer selection, and some friendly faces. The pizza is really good, not great, but satisfying. I live in Bend OR and there are beers here that I can't find in Bend. Lovely place with lovely people. read more

The selection of items is the best in town, they have food, beer, wine, snacks, random fun items, and a whole lot of personality! The gals that run Rock City are the sweetest! We've been coming here for just over 3 years now, several times a year, and they always recognize us! Such a great place to come with a small or big group with seating indoors and outdoors. The pizza these guys make is the only pizza I eat from anywhere! It is seriously so frickin good! Not in the mood for pizza? No worries, they have lots of other food here too! As everybody else says, great pizza in the middle of nowhere! After a day of exploring the rocks this was perfect. They were doing takeout only due to Covid, which was fine. We were staying at the Almo Inn, so got some pizza to go and it was great to relax in our room and enjoy the delicious food. Highly recommend it even if you're just passing through. The Hawaiian was everyone's hands down favorite. read more

This red barn building in Almo is difficult to miss. Actually, it's difficult to miss much in the small town... (er- village?) of Almo. Rock City is near the turnoff for City of Rocks National Reserve and Smoky Mountain Campground, making it the most accessible spot for groceries and prepared foods for campers, climbers and hikers in the area. Rock City is priced right, too. With the limited options in town and the remoteness of location, the owners could easily gouge tourists with outrageous prices (and that would be expected), but instead, they've chosen for a more just route and kept their prices competitive. Boxes of pasta and tuna sell for under two dollars and fresh fruits (apples, bananas) are $.50/$.89 depending on size. There is a pretty good selection packed into the tiny space with not only the staples, but some of the trimmings that turn an ordinary meal into something a little more spectacular. Not in the mood to fix your food? Rock City has you covered. They have prepared sandwiches waiting in the cooler and made-to-order pizza is waiting for you by placing an order at the counter with one of the friendly staff members- mostly comprised of family and a few out-of-town college students. While I didn't get to try the pizza (the place was packed on one particularly rainy evening- guess no one else wanted to campsite cook, either), we did get to see the options and were impressed. They make all their pizza dough from scratch (word is, they do on their sandwiches, too) and I have heard it's absolutely delicious. The kicker though is no matter what size you get, all toppings are included. Pile it high with ham, peppers, cheese, etc- you won't pay extra. The price was reasonable, too- around $13 to feed two hungry climbers. Note that the crust is thinner than your ordinary pizza as the owners here listened to the feedback of their clientele (climbers) who were concerned about carbs. This surprised us... we came in with the idea that we wanted a thick, crust-filled pizza. Guess we differ from the other climbers, but that's off topic. The people who work here are super friendly, as well. They remember your name and face and give you a big smile and hello when you come in the door. Even when they were busy, they stopped what they were doing to come over and say hi for a few seconds. On our last day in town, we made sure to swing by to let them know we were off- it was almost like they had become friends. We chatted for a few minutes and then promised we'd get some pizza next time we were in town since we had missed the opportunity. After hearing such great feedback on it from the locals and people who have visited, we knew we had missed on something great... in fact, that's the one regret Steve still says he has on the trip so far. If you happen to be in need of camping or car supplies, this is your place as well. Fuel for your camp stove is here as well as car parts and supplies. Supposedly, the owner can also help you fix some of the ailments your car may have, though he wasn't on hand when we stopped in the camping/car section. If you need to know the five-day forecast, this place has it on hand. Guess what I'm saying is if you need it, Rock City has it. The only reason to go into this place is to buy beer. You don't really have any other options near the city. The lady was extremely rude, and very slow at ringing people up. Not to mention the store has an awful floor plan to accommodate more than 5 customers. We waited in line for 15 minutes while she checked out 3 people ahead of us, people started to form what they thought was a line going out the door when there was already a line established towards the restroom. We gave the place one more chance the next afternoon. We came into get some pizza, as we walked in she snapped at us and announced their no water bottle policy. (3 of my party had nalgenes all clear and clearly filled with only water) we thought this was a bit odd.. We walked on the place entirely. Maybe they wanted to charge us for water? Who knows, but they did lose a group of 5 hungry climbers about to devour $50+ of pizza. Bottom line if this place had any competition at all they would be out of business a long time ago. Take your business to the Tracy store, it's run by a little old man and his wife they're much nicer. read more
