Love this place cuz you can get the latest issue of The Alpinist, shop ice screws and load up on cool clothing with most of the top brands. Also a great selection of climbing shoes and hard core crampon-ready ice climbing boots. Staff are always helpful and nice. Great place to come for rentals on climbing equipment. I came here to rent two big crash pads for $20 a piece. They were in good shape. In addition, this place also sells used equipment for ski, climbing, and other outdoor activities. Excellent outdoor gear shop. I wanted to rent snowshoes to use in the Catskills and a quick online search led me here. It's actually two stores: a consignment shop with good deals on used items and a regular one. The staff were enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful with answering questions. The snowshoes rental included an option for a seasonal rental ($60!), a great way to test the gear and see if you enjoy snowshoeing, especially since the need for the equipment is unpredictable. Hiking clubs often insist that you bring snowshoes to the trail on the day of a hike, even though you may wind up leaving them in the car. The price for a day rental is $15, and you pay half price if you need them for an additional day. The rental also includes poles, and that added bonus made me opt for the seasonal rental. (On this trip, I wound up using the poles and not needing the snowshoes, so I'm glad to hang onto them for the next time.) It doesn't include a carrying case, which would make it even easier to schlep them home, but that's ok. I also wound up buying a pair of hiking pants that I'm very happy with. They have a frequent buyer club. You get a cute brass colored medallion with a number to hang on your keychain and get a $25 voucher after spending $500. If you buy outdoor gear, you know that adds up quickly. The store and staff had that chill college town vibe. They told me if there's still snow in early April, the return date is flexible and wished me a fun trip. Places like this love to remind me when I'm not in NYC. Sigh. If you are new to climbing, buy your shoes here, not on the internet. Knowledgeable help is important. You will be much happier. Paragon, REI & EMS generally do not have knowledgeable staff regarding climbing. The Internet stores are not going to tell you how to get to the new climbing area that does not have a guidebook or fit your shoes properly. read more

I went into rock and snow looking to buy crampons, but had no experience hiking the catskills in winter so I had a lot of questions. All of the staff were very patient and helpful and it was clear that they were all sincere in making the best suggestions rather than trying to make a sale. Rich, the owner gave me a lot of useful advice about what hikes to take and more importantly, discouraged me from taking some hikes I shouldn't. He even fielded a call from me at the trailhead asking for directions. They have an awesome consignment shop next door, the store has curated a great selection and the inventory is displayed really well. Came here after watching some guys and girls rock climbing, (whom allowed me to use their gear and let me climb up, very grateful for that!, now I got ANOTHER hobby) Well that won't be my last time climbing, it was exhilarating. Ridiculously overpriced used gear, unorganized and random selection. PLEASE save your money - I'm not sure if this place just takes advantage of newbies to the area and outdoor sports but wow do they rip you off. Almost everything used sells at or even above new market value. I saw an osprey pack - worn, missing buckles, stained - with a tag of 150. I bought the same pack brand new a few months ago for 135. The staff is also unhelpful and unknowledgeable (and you really need someone to know at least a little bit about what they're doing when they're helping you buy rock climbing gear). As someone who values the outdoors and wants them to be accessible and affordable to anyone, this place is a shame. read more

I have never rock climbed. First, I am afraid of heights and I also have what were once referred to as "pencil arms". But, I just spent a week hiking various trails in the "Gunks" (Shawagunk Mountains) and visiting New Paltz. This store has really cool outdoor clothes, great sales, books and maps. Plus, the staff were incredibly nice and helpful. We spent a lot of time (and money) here and we came out with some very cool clothes. The staff are friendly and helpful, and a great source of information and beta for the area. They will also match the price of anyone else, even sale prices (I think)- Just show them the link on your phone, or tell them where and they'll look it up for you. It may feel a little awkward / obnoxious to ask them to lower their price, but it's much better than not buying from them at all! I admit I buy most of my gear online from the big retailers (backcountry, ems, REI), but I try to support Rock & Snow when I can, even if it's just stopping in once in a while to buy a few carabiners. They really are a good business, and they contribute to many local climbing organizations, and serve as an impromptu lost & found for gear that you find abandoned at the crag. Stop in on your way to the Gunks, say hi, and buy something! (They also have a nice clean bathroom, and your friends can browse gear while you wait..) read more

I was recommended to go here for mountaineering equipment by some personnel in Campmor. However, looking around the store was frightened by the prices and surprised at how little it was footprint-wise. Now I know this stuff costs money, but when the prices of items are 20% more than that found at other retail outlets such as Campmor or Ramsey Outdoors, that is just ridiculous. Ended up buying my new snowshoes and ice axe online, and saved maybe 150$ dollars. My GF ended up buying alpine boots (not the heavy duty plastic molded types) for under 100$ elsewhere. Suppose if you are in a pinch and need equipment or are loaded where money is no object, then come here. Otherwise, look elsewhere. read more

With all sorts of outdoor activities available in and around New Paltz it's little surprise that there'd be a great gear store in town. Rock and Snow has all the clothes, gear, and info to outfit your forray into the surrounding mountains and beyond. Like every brick and mortar store their prices are higher than online but no more than other outdoor retailers and and they prove indispensible as a source of last minute gear and area info so I always try to partonize them when in town. The clothing selection is good and rock gear selection is excellent. They rent ice gear and x-country skis annd other miscellany. They have a wide selection of area guide books. They also offer rock & ice guiding as well as running the annual Ice Fest. I've known and climbed with a couple of the guys there and all are very knowledgible, safety oriented climers. The back room looks like its off limits, like its staff only, but go ahead on in it's the clearance racks and you'll find some great bargains. read more

Fantastic and very knowledgable staff make Rock and Snow a great place to gear up. Climbing is the forte here and if you need advice on what to put in your rack, the staff here can tell you exactly what you need, even give you tips on specific routes and make recommendations. I had a detailed conversation about fitting and material stretch with one of the staff when buying climbing shoes here. When one of my cams was recalled, R&S called me to make sure I knew and was OK. Phenomenal. Otherwise a decent selection of hiking gear, there are also x-country ski and snow shoe rentals as well as some other equipment. Yes, they're a little more expensive than what you might find online. But the knowledge, the service, and the support of local folks who love getting out as much as you do is more than worth it. read more

Love this place I funky stuck in the sixties New Paltz. The staff is knowledgable without being pretentious and the gear is limited but top notch. Yes,of course you'll pay more than anything off of Amazon but with that comes the service and advice . If you want to save a few bucks by going to Ramsey Outdoor(yech,they should hire a cleaning service) or Campmor,go ahead, it's only 80 miles or so away. You pay peanuts, you gets monkeys and Rock and Snow has no monkeys working there. Climbing is a serious business and they have serious staff to help you along. Took an ice climbing lesson from Jesse in March through Rock & Snow (sort of) it was with Alpine Endeavors. I'm overweight. I struggle to climb, but I do. I lost a bit of weight and wanted to give this a try after only indoor gym climbing. Jesse was so awesome it almost made me cry. He made me feel like I could do it. We ended up doing way more than I thought we would and he wasn't judgemental when I had to stop and struggle. I used to be pretty devoted to online shopping, but these folks make brick and mortar make sense. You can't beat the personal attention, the local intel, or the friendliness. These are people who live and play in the area, and are experts at the activities you're interested in, so there's nothing about your sport or that region that they can't help with. You can buy or rent a wide variety of climbing, hiking, x-c skiing, and camping gear. They drilled a hole in my climbing guide for me even though I bought it elsewhere. And when I last made a big-ticket gear purchase, the price was as good as the best deal on the Internet. This place has been around a long time and deserves to be. With corporate big box stores now finally on the decline, we are lucky that businesses like this have survived and will flourish in the future. The original owner, Dick Williams, is a Gunks legend if you didn't know and a really cool guy I got to climb with many years ago. Places like EMS and Campmor used to be OK for private label clothes, but when it comes to technical gear/info there is no comparison to this shop. Glad they're still around! read more

Now, anyone that knows me knows that I'm no stranger to the outdoors. I've been outside plenty of places to know my way around. But if you want to talk about a place that is everything for everything, so much so that it'll leave you lost without a compass (in a good way!) then Rock and Snow is a place for the inner outside in you to come out and indulge. First things first, I gotta let you guys know that they have TWO stores. Really cool! One is the regular store and the other is an outlet store where I learned after asking that they sell new and used wares of all kinds but that's for another review (incoming!). So after being directed further down the street by the jolly upper lip accessorized gentlemen, I swung open the door and rang the bell. I remember coming here a long time ago before the bell but its been a welcome addition. Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle! A plethora of odds and ends to get you up and around even the steepest mountain. Now, let me be clear, I've been called something of a "gear head" when it comes to climbing and sometimes my friends say its to a fault (don't tell my wife!) but in all my travels inside and out, this candy shop has enough of the latest and greatest sweets to give you a toothache! Need a carabiner to rack your cams? How about 10 different kinds in 20 different color combinations? Too much? Too bad! This ain't grandpa's shop with one lonely carabiner collecting dust on the wall, this place is for the true, overly obsessive, gram counting, gotta have it straight to my veins nerds out there. They even have ovals. Very Cool! When you frequent the outerdoors as much as I do, you come to realize that certain shops become more than just a place that sells you things, they become a lifestyle. Rock and Snow, just like the climbing they sell, IS a lifestyle and a really cool one at that. Just check out all the cool shirt designs over the years and you'll come to realize this place is LITERALLY the Velvet Underground of the above ground (and even above the above ground!). They're a place that can unite a group of people without ever having to introduce themselves. You'll be in the outdoors one day and run into someone wearing a weird climbing t-shirt that has a race car on it for some reason that says "rock and snow" and without even hesitating you'll feel right at home and ask "what does your shirt mean?" At which point you'll spend hours trying to figure out the deep complexities of a climbing shop with layer upon layer of didactic analytical thought processes that would make Derrida think you're being pedantic. Very cool! In summation, Rock and Snow is a shop of ever amassing intricacies. Once you think you have a handle on what this whole thing is about they come at you with a shirt with a big hammer on it with German text that seems really cool but also evokes the mysteries of the universe and leaves you with nothing but a mathematical proof that it is, in fact, funny. Around every corner a mystery, on every hanger a story, and in all our hearts a song. Unfortunately that song is Roadrunner and its playing non-stop. On belay! read more
