I visited Verrill Farm for the first time on August 20, 2026…read more Unfortunately, an incident outside the market and the staff's response left me extremely disappointed. At approximately 1:00 p.m., I was outside waiting for my friend while she finished making her purchases. As she walked out of the store, she tripped over a bike rack positioned along the walkway. She fell hard, injuring and bloodying her knee and scraping her hands. She was visibly shaken, and the pie she had just purchased was destroyed in the fall. I went inside to tell an employee what had happened and to ask whether the pie could be replaced. While I was speaking with the employee, my friend came inside, limping. My friend asked whether the employee had heard what had happened. Rather than expressing concern or asking whether she was okay, the employee's reaction struck both of us as surprisingly dismissive. My friend then asked whether she could have some ice for her injured knee. The employee said no and walked away. Because I was surprised by that response, I asked another employee who was stocking muffins whether he could get some ice for my friend because, I explained, she had just fallen and injured herself. He also indicated that he could not. The first employee later returned and explained that there were no more pies available, and my friend was refunded for the pie. What happened next was the strangest part of the experience. As we were leaving, the employee came after us and quietly told my friend that she would get her some ice if she promised not to tell anyone. My friend accepted the ice. I cannot explain why providing ice to an injured customer apparently needed to be done discreetly. What bothered me most was not simply that my friend fell. Accidents happen. It was the response afterward. A customer was bleeding, shaken, and asking for something as basic as ice. I would have expected someone to ask whether she was all right and to offer reasonable assistance. Instead, the response we experienced initially felt defensive and indifferent. The pie was refunded, which I appreciate. But the overall interaction left such a negative impression that I do not intend to return.

I just finished reading all the reviews and while most of them were positive and well deserved, a…read morecouple of things stood out that I think deserve some comment. Before I get to them I want to jump on the bandwagon and say Rob and Jannette (the owners) are some of my favorite people now. I park my car in the garage across the street from them and feel a gravitational pull to the market every time I park. I sometimes go in there with no need and no idea why I'm going in and walk out with something special. Now to the complaints (which were few but shouldn't go unchallenged). First, some complained that the prices are high. That's true, as well as inevitable at such a small scale. I know the owners aren't becoming rich via this venture. If you're the type of person that only considers prices when forming a value statement, you might be better off going to BJ's. For me, value is a complex calculation that doesn't actually result in something that you can put a dollar sign in front of. I live in the neighborhood so convenience is a factor. The selection, in particular the beer and wine choices, is something that I literally can't find at any other grocery store nearby, thanks to the invisible Puritans in my state that voted down a referendum to allow grocery stores to sell beer and wine. Much of what's available is sourced locally. More important than those, and something that I saw in many reviews, is the wonderful relationship I have with the owners. I can't even walk past the place without a friendly wave from them. They know their products and are happy to answer questions about them. And they know me. They know I try to only eat vegan foods, their amazing Muffaletta sandwich being a notable exception. They know I'm allergic to chocolate. As a regular customer, I get special treatment from them. Try THAT at Market Basket! Just this morning, I ran out of turmeric and ran to the market. They didn't have it on the shelf, but they had it in the kitchen. Rob got me what I needed and refused to take my money. What's something like that worth to you? I also saw some people complain that the produce can be on the edge of spoilage. I can't deny that there have been times when I purchased things only to have them inedible the next day. I understand that this is just normal for a small, owner-operated grocery store with moderate turnover and minimal staff. But instead of writing them off, I alert them when I think something in the display fridge should be removed. Also, I don't stock my refrigerator from MSM. I buy what I need when I'm going to use it and inspect it before putting it my shopping basket. In other words, I don't attempt to treat them like a tiny Hannaford. I treat them like an amazing pantry, which is easy for me since they're in the neighborhood. Before the MSM opened the city conducted a survey among downtown residents that attempted to figure out what types of businesses people would most like to have appear in the neighborhood. A small grocer was at the top of most resident's preferences. I'd like to remind people that now that we have one, we'd better use it... or we'll lose it. I'd also add that whatever problems may exist at MSM, they'll only get better if we reach out to them the way they've reached out to us.

Market Street Market is the only locally-owned grocery store as of the time of writing this. The…read moreowner of the store also owns the building, and he is as friendly and helpful as anyone could ask for. The market carries a nice assortment of fruits and veggies (mostly local), deli meat & cheese, pastas, sauces, breads, coffees, etc. They have a great MA-roasted coffee that is excellent, and you can even get fresh-squeezed OJ by the glass - there's a fancy contraption that allows you to watch the process - or you can get watermelon by the slice. Perfect for those hot summer evenings. There are some muffins and pastries if you need a quick snack, frozen foods, and a decent selection of laundry soaps (like method) and other household necessities. In short, pretty much anything (basic) you'd need to run your home, especially if you already eat out several nights a week. They're open 8am - 8pm. Also, since it's a smaller store, I'm assuming that the owners will stock anything you ask for if there is a growing demand for it. They seem pretty flexible and are definitely open to opinions and feedback on how to make store as good as they possibly can. So why didn't I give it 5 stars? Well, it is pretty small, so there's no way they can stock EVERYthing that I need, which means I'll still probably have to go to a larger store for some things. That and the prices have to be a little higher because they get such small quantities. Otherwise, I'm a fan. I'll try to get at least a few items there every week just to keep them in business, because it's something that was sorely missing from the downtown Lowell area. Stop by and check them out! Not too much mayo on the Roast beef and I am overwhelmed with the amount of beef that is put into the sandwich. The beef was super tender, very tasty and not bleeding. It's so good to see you get what you pay for here, they put local sub shops to shame. The Italian sub was just as awesome and it was made with generous portions as well. The chili is saturated with beef and has a heat that sneaks up on you. The store is eye pleasing with a variety of groceries including fresh protein, frozen meals, sauce, salads and more. Toppings (sausage and mushroom) were few and far between, especially the mushrooms which were almost nonexistent. Toppings, sauce, and cheese came only half-way to the edge, just dough after that. Top was way over-browned to the point where the cheese was disagreeably chewy. And I'm not sure if this was meant to be a thin-crust or a deep-dish pizza because it was both: thin in the middle half and three times thicker in parts of the outer half. Obviously whoever prepared this has no clue to how to do it properly. The ONLY good thing I can say about this mess is the dough itself was fresh and had a good texture. It wasn't just one. We were a group of 5 and ordered 3 pizzas. Everybody agreed they were bad. They should be ashamed to serve these. Didn't anybody notice leaving the kitchen they were unservable? So I would never consider here for take-out. But we were here for trivia night so maybe I'd try again to have something to eat while playing? But next time if they come out like that I'd be refusing delivery and demanding a new one - that's for sure. As far as the trivia, I might not return for that either. The room was very loud from the crowd, and the announcer's microphone never did work properly so it was very hard to hear. And, knowing how many good wines and beers they sell in the general store on the first floor, it is painful to have a choice of just 5 very generic wines upstairs. Why can't they offer all the wines from downstairs, with a reasonable mark-up for restaurant purchase of course?

We supported a different farm for our bulk grass-fed beef for many years but decided to switch to…read moreKalon Farms last summer because they were closer to us and because the other farm, while having fantastic quality meat, weren't the best at butchering. We tried Kalon beef a number of times by buying from their storefront but finally decided to buy half a cow. It took a couple months to finish off the previous cow we'd purchased before getting to the Kalon cow but immediately knew something was wrong as soon as we tried our first steak. There was a subtle "off" taste to it. Over the next month or so, we tried multiple different cuts and all the ones with any fat or marbling had the same issue. The leaner cuts were mostly okay. I reached out to Kalon using the form on their website. No reply. I reached out again via email. No reply. I was very clear that I wasn't expecting a refund or reimbursement of any kind because I knew it had been a few months. I just wanted to inform them and ask if anybody else had reported the same issue. Still nothing back from them. Eventually, a few months later, I remembered that I still hadn't heard anything back so I called and asked to speak to someone in charge. They were super sarcastic on the phone. It started with "Are you sure you bought from us? I don't even recognize your name." It progressed to "Many people complain about the taste because they don't know what real grass-fed beef tastes like; it's not like store-bought meat." It ended with "We had another complaint a few months ago but our owner took the beef home and ate it all and it was fine." I went there three days ago to drop off the over 240lbs of what remained. Around 80lbs of assorted steaks and cuts. Around 20-30lbs of roasts. Around 100lbs of mince. Around 30-40lbs of bones, tallow, organs, etc. I was very polite to the person at the desk (it's not her fault, after all), we were respectful of the space and brought everything back in cooler boxes and placed them neatly inside. I handed them a letter (pic attached) and included my phone number in case the owner wanted to call me back. Still zero response. There are a few other reviews online complaining about the same "off" taste but there's seemingly always some sort of excuse as to why it's the customer's fault or that the customer just doesn't understand what good beef tastes like. I also saw some posts about their farming practices, stating that their animals were feeding on what used to be dump grounds. I didn't see that for myself so I can't comment but it was worth noting that it's being said by more than just a few people. Personally, I've accepted the loss of, literally, thousands of dollars of meat. It would've just been the professional thing to reach out to me at least once to discuss the matter. Instead, I get complete radio silence. I included a pic of the email I'd sent and the letter I left. I also included a comparison pic of Kalon's mince to the mince from my previous farm. Theirs looks extremely pale and anemic in comparison. It also doesn't match what they sell in their storefront. I suspect their storefront gets meat from their healthy cows but bulk orders are not from the same batch but, obviously, that's purely speculation so take it for what it's worth. I have no evidence one way or another but the discrepancy in quality between bulk and storefront is visible/tastable.
