We were visiting the nearby Billings Farm and a staff person there recommended that we pick up…read moresandwiches at the Village Butcher (five minutes away) and then have a picnic on one of their many tables at the Farm. This was a great suggestion. I selected the House Roast Beef sandwich ($13) - with lettuce, tomato, Vermont cheddar, and garlic aioli, served on a kaiser roll. The roast beef was rare, juicy and the other ingredients helped to make it a hardy and delicious sandwich. My wife had the Veggie Lover's Delight ($12) - with roasted red and yellow peppers, red onion, lettuce, tomato, and cucumber, served on sourdough bread with a goat cheese and pesto spread. Their refrigerator cases had the makings for a simple picnic to an extravagant spread -- and everything in between. It's called the Village Butcher because it also is a butcher shop in addition to selling sandwiches. There is no inside seating, but there is plenty of outdoor tables. This is the kind of place you wouldn't discover on your own, but it makes for a great lunch spot.

We had actually stopped by the Village Butcher Shop last year, but didn't write a review, so we're…read moregoing to do it this time since this was our final meal in Woodstock last weekend before we hit the road. We got there pretty early and were the only ones in the store, and we do have to say that the service here is impeccable. We were greeted with such genuine warmth and kindness, and the young man helping us could not have been more hospitable. Unfortunately, there's a pretty limited selection for breakfast items, but we were happy to score a spinach-cheddar turnover that had just come out of the oven. It was BEYOND--so good with a healthy amount of spinach and flaky, not greasy puff pastry shell. We salute you! (Last year we had a mushroom turnover that was equally impressive despite not being straight out of the oven.) The egg & cheese breakfast sandwich was a little more dull in comparison--still good, but could have used more seasoning and pizzazz. Anyway, we think it's probably better to come here for lunch to get a heartier meal because sandwiches seem to be their thing. We're looking forward to trying one on our next visit. Either way, a great place worth visiting if you're in Woodstock.
