We hired RCD for a residential remodel earlier this year on the recommendation of my real estate agent who said Robin is "my all time favorite designer". Everyone in Seattle (particuarly real estate agents) know Robin's work and she has a good reputation. She is also a very nice person. I was very excited to work with her because her website is magnificent. She has a wonderful aesthetic in the commercial, large scale, projects shown on the site. As a residential customer, though, I was deeply disappointed. In contrast with the previous review (when Robin was working alone) hiring Robin Chell now involves hiring her entire agency and the level of skill from person to person varies widely. It's also incredibly expensive because multiple people touch your project throughout and you are billed each time. Residential projects are the bottom of the priority list and it truly shows. Robin herself is not that hands on anymore. Junior people are far too involved. I can count on both hands mistakes that were made in the process of our design project-- from lying to me about an appointment they forgot to make (but I was at home waiting for and found out accidentally via the subcontractor was never scheduled), to blaming other service providers for failures to follow through and rarely taking ownership, to ordering window coverings that gave us no privacy in private areas like bathrooms (which wasn't fully rectified for 6 MONTHS!), to letting items that we deemed a priority be forgotten until I (repeatedly) brought them up to keep things moving forward. The biggest frustration I had with the whole process was how expensive it was for how little actual "design management" I got in return. So many hands were in this process and everyone billed (like a law firm). Yet it moved like molasses. And we paid law firm prices for a so-so job that took 6 months. Ultimately I'm okay with the outcome but I don't LOVE it like I expected to. And I paid LOVE it prices to essentially manage my own project throughout. If I were you, reader, I would probably go with a one person operation because it would be less expensive, errors could be rectified more swiftly, that person would be more available to you, that person would know you, and your tastes, better, and you would not dilute the project with lots of other people who cost a ton of $.
