If you want to create your dream house or apartment, whatever your budget, then look no further…read morethan Spatial Matters. Afters years of moving from place to place, both near and far, I settled into a unique loft space in what was once a classroom. As my own tastes evolved, I wanted to realize my aesthetic potential to match the wonders of my high ceilings, giant windows and large living room. I knew what I liked, but lacked the expertise to replace my tired furnishings with new pieces and create an innovative and functional floor plan. It's one thing to look at countless design magazines with pictures of professionally staged rooms and quite another to pull things together unless you are talented in ways that I knew I was not. So I looked online at local decorators' websites and carefully scrutinized project examples. I liked the photos on Spatial Matters's site because they included small spaces inhabited by one person, like me. Christina Collins-Pezzner, the artful, ingenious proprietor, came to my place for a consult. Right away I was struck by her expertise, creativity and lack of pretension (a major hazard in the design world). She quickly created a plan, measured like a fiend and photographed my space. Like a sorceress, Christina inserted the photos into a software-executed magician's box, out of which popped a mock-up of a dream come true: a jewel box with echoes of Gustave Klimt, which was one of my goals. I was floored. Despite all the inevitable delays and extra obstacles of COVID-19, Christina and her crew sourced and acquired wonderful, unique pieces that fit my budget. I now live in a perfect place. My friends and neighbors walk in and gasp. And let me tell you: if you have to shelter in place and have the means to do it, redecorate and stay put in splendor!!!!!

Where to begin. We contracted Jen to do a restaurant remodel. We had been operating the same space…read moresince 2016 and when we opened at that time we didn't invest heavily into design. We recently decided that it was finally time to give the restaurant a fresh start and a makeover. Jen was incredible. Her attention to detail, creativity, and final vision are genius. Her knowledge of design and her work ethic are incredible. I've mentioned many times that she reminds me of Joana Gaines from HGTVs fixer upper. Jen is the ultimate problem solver. The hallway to our bathrooms needed lighting and she was able to find an effective and chic fix right away. We had an old bench that my painters suggested throwing away before she stepped in to show them how to spray paint it and refurbish it without spending a lot of their time. She noticed a light fixture in front of the restaurant that I had never noticed and all it needed was a light bulb which transformed the entrance. She free hand painted a mural for us which was amazing. She was able to reorganize seating to allow for more space and more seats. Finally she was able to open up the space and brought in more natural light by choosing different colors/lighting. The space really transformed and we didn't have to do any heavy construction. We planned on doing the restaurant in 3 phases. So far we were able to complete the first phase which has had great feedback from our customers. The restaurant already looks new and I can't wait to see the entire project get finished.

Avoid Rockwell Interior Design, which is also operating as Chic Cabinetry…read more(Rockwellcabinetsdesign.com) in Gig Harbor, WA. We chose Rockwell/Chic at the recommendation of our contractor, as this was their preferred cabinet provider. This proved to be a mistake, as Liane Rockwell was more interested in satisfying her sense of design than meeting our needs within the space available. Our contractor needed to intervene to get the design changes we needed. Then the design mistakes showed up with the cabinets. Drawers would not fit under bathroom sinks and had to be remade, the kitchen appliance garage was missing the internal box and shelves, and the storage cabinet for our laundry room was delivered without anything to support the internal shelves and it was 2 inches shorter than needed, preventing the installation of the adjacent cabinets flush to the ceiling as desired. The Liane's response was, "Those things happen", and she refused to correct the situation. Leaving our contractor to deal with the cabinet manufacturer.

She took the time to listen to our goals for the house and made sure to strike a balance between what my wife and I wanted. She was very respectful of the house's age and focused on creating a timeless design for each room. We hired Rebecca in December of 2021 to work on three rooms -- our entryway, living room, and…read moremaster bathroom. Our contract stated that she would provide design and project management services. We also purchased furniture from her for our living room. In total, we paid her approximately $50k for all of these services and products. Throughout the project, Rebecca made us feel as though we were her absolute lowest priority and frequently showed little to no regard for our time. After we paid her for the furniture, Rebecca stopped communicating with us. Her contract states that she will respond to questions and comments within 3 business days, but she frequently ignored our emails and we would typically not hear from her for 4-6 weeks, only after repeated emails from us requesting updates. For 6 months, Rebecca repeatedly told us our technical drawings would be ready within 1 or 2 weeks. Then we would not hear from her for 4-6 weeks, and would often have to email her two or more times before we would even receive a response. In her response, she would simply repeat that we could expect our drawings within 2 weeks. This cycle repeated for 6 months, and we finally received technical drawings in March of 2023, nearly 15 months after we began working with her. The drawings themselves lacked details such as terminations and returns, and even included the wrong colors. These issues were never corrected. Rebecca showed very little regard for our time. She frequently canceled appointments at the last minute without explanation, usually in the middle of the day that she was supposed to meet with us. We generally did not hear from her again for 4-6 weeks at a time, only after repeated emails. After 18 months of this behavior, we finally sought legal counsel. Only after this did Rebecca finally respond to us and deliver our furniture. However, when we had an issue with one of the chairs that required a warranty claim, the same behavior emerged. We would not hear from her for many weeks on end, and appointments were canceled at the last minute, on the day she was supposed to visit. We had a remarkably poor experience with Rebecca. Our project for 3 small rooms should have taken several months, but has instead extended to nearly 2 years without being completed. We would strongly recommend avoiding her services.

I always have a pretty good idea of what I like and how I want the space to feel, but the execution part is always tricky for me! That said, I was really hesitant to use a designer for fear of 1: not seeing eye to eye design-wise, and 2: being over-charged for a service that I would be only somewhat satisfied with. Despite my reservations, a friend of mine introduced me to Keri and I instantly knew she would be a great fit. First of all, she is pretty much the nicest human being on the planet. I'm not kidding. And I could tell that she had a great sense of style and design by the way she dressed (is that shallow?). ;) As it turned out, Keri was and has been everything I HOPED a designer would be: very open to hearing my ideas, and yet decisive and clear about what might and might not work in a specific space (I tend to be wishy-washy and can never make up my mind); incredibly creative and resourceful; willing to work with any budget; and just extremely easy to work with. As the mother of a toddler, she also understands the specific needs that we as parents have in terms of furniture that is both aesthetically great AND functional. I am so happy with the work she has done for us thus far.. We have almost our entire house completed, and I have been having a blast every step of the way. There are not many services that I can honestly say this about, but Keri has been worth every penny. Overall, she has saved us hundreds of dollars, not to mention time! We'll continue to use her until our house is finished, and I'll recommend her to all my buddies.
