MJ Design Custom Cabinets

While other customers have had positive and satisfying experiences with this vendor - our personal…read moresaga has been much different. Our review is solely based on what we have personally and individually gone through in utilizing this sub-contractor. We needed custom cabinets for two basement bathrooms on a new home build. MJ Design was recommended to us by the folks that did our granite countertops. We set an appointment, and Jared came out to our home for an initial visit. We identified our needs and shortly thereafter we received an initial quote. Much to our surprise, the price was well above our expectations, yet we felt like Jared's initial "sales pitch of being a perfectionist" and considering customer support & communication with the client" two of his highest priorities - we swallowed the bitter money pill and paid approximately $9,000 for two, bathroom cabinets.- signing the verbose and somewhat occluded work order/authorization (here, like pretty much every other homeowner we trusted in good faith that we not only would be taken care of, but more importantly we would have a credible voice in the event something went astray). During our initial design visit we unequivocally expressed and explained to Jared what specific stain we wanted on the cabinetry to the smaller bathroom. Jared assured us that he could produce what we requested. At no point did he provide either a sample or even a photo of what "ebony" stain would look like as a final product. Our primary requests where to ensure that the expensive walnut grain would be clearly seen through the stain - Once again we put our faith in him as the expert he proffered to be. When the cabinets arrived for installation - it was immediately apparent that there was a problem. While the larger bathroom cabinetry was fine, the smaller bathroom cabinet was stained a dark, pitch black and not in any form what we originally agreed upon. That same day and before any installation occurred, we notified Jared of the problem, we stated our preference - that the problem cabinet was not to be installed, that it be taken back to his shop and fixed as to what we expected/needed. His immediate response was to have all the cabinets installed and we "could work things out later", so once again - with concern now growing, we allowed for the installers to do their job. What followed as one might identify as a "remedial effort at reaching an acceptable solution" instantaneously decomposed into overt events of "doubling down and falling back on what was requested per the work order/authorization" - now days after the installation had occurred Jared produced a definition of "ebony" a definition which was unknown to us when ordering - as a point of interest it was at this time that we found that the specific language found within his work order/authorization is crafted in such a unilateral manner that it leaves the customer without any significant legal recourse- should you elect to undergo a contract with this individual, it will be to your greatest benefit to read every single word in the fine print. This obvious a case of "Buyer Beware". Jared did come out to our house and see the problem for himself. At that time, he let us know that the outside panels of the cabinets would have to be made anew, and that he shouldered "part of the responsibility - during that specific conversation" (at no time did he identify or assign any additional expense for us). We were left with the expectation that the new cabinet panels would arrive shortly and be installed as per our original work order/contract. After his visit - we received an email for a change order and an additional $800.00 charge for the new cabinet panels. This is when we witnessed in fact what "perfectionism and customer support" truly mean in this venue. For two weeks we texted, called and emailed. In every single one of those communication platforms, we optimistically searched for a way to reach an acceptable solution (our intent has always been to help protect the brand name of those folks who take great pride in the quality of their trade). The few replies we received, unfortunately contained (once again) the same verbiage of "what was ordered" and the menace of possible additional costs that (according to the contract) he could, should he wish, bring forth. Just to further clarify, I am quoting his last email to us: "There is no use going back and forth, this will be my LAST email". How would you feel as a dissatisfied and frustrated customer? Home building is stressful enough without these gauntlets. How we wish that our experiences with MJ Design would have been different, the real irony is that they very well should have. in 2010 we had a new roof installed by this company. We loved it and the service we received at…read morethat time. A few years ago we had them come back to place vents in the roof because we did not want to use an attic fan anymore. The installer should have cut an approximately 24 inch vent, but he only cut about and 8 inch vent. He was picking up his tools and my husband went in the attic to look at his finished work. He noticed one vent was about 8 inches when it should have been closer to 24 inches. My husband made the installer resize the vent hole to its correct dimension. In 2020 we had CK Builders remove our existing gutters and install new gutters and leafless guards. BIG MISTAKE. They installed the down spout gutter sleeve backwards so water would run out of the joint instead of down through the spout. This fall my husband went up on the roof to plug a hornet's nest and noticed there were 2 big holes in the fascia. He also noticed one of the gutter screen joints did not match up. The joint slopped backwards and left a 3/4 inch gap for leaves and debris to blow into. The reason we had the gutter guards installed in the first place was to keep leaves and debris out of the gutters. When we contacted them about the holes in the fascia they said they were from the previous gutter system spikes. However nobody mentioned this to us at the time of the install. Also they could have patched it with the materials they had on hand at the time of the install or at least talked to us about this issue. Upon contacting them they said "the gap is minimal and should not cause any problem and the holes were from the old gutter system." Yes they were responsive but we have to live with the big holes in the fascia and the 3/4 inch gap in the leafless gutter cover for leaves and debris to blow into. They have responded to us they believe their work is correct and there is no need to send anyone out to our house. Needless to say we are very disappointed in their craftmanship and their customer service. I would not recommend this company.

I am joining the other yelp reviews regarding CK Builders in solidarity, and also being hopeful…read morethat others will make the right decision to never have CK Builders darken their doorway, let alone work on it! Read those reviews and mine very carefully, so your hard earned money, spent with the intent to improve likely one of your largest financial investments, won't be just throwing good money after bad by using CK Builders. Lack of skill sets starting with the owners and all the way down the line. We hired CK for a residential remodel, only to quickly regret that decision. Promised us skilled and trusted trades people, we got whomever they could scrape up, and that's probably a result of their reputation. They WILL NOT stand behind their work, or their mistakes, even though they tout a 4 year warranty when you sign up with them. Robynn (an owner) will be the first one to dodge the issues and make excuses, then Chad (an owner) will back her up. All the while twisting the facts and spending more time trying to escape responsibility for problems. They look for ways to add to the bill, charging for talking to the customer or their subs, driving to the shop, picking up materials, anything to add on! Billing errors and oversights a continual occurrence. In our neighborhood, CK is now known as THAT contractor to stay away from. Terrible, inconsistent work patterns, never cleaning up after the day, or even the week. Usually no trash cans in the house, painters dumping paint water on our bushes by the front door. The sheetrock guy thoughtlessly splashing his white sheetrock mud all over our brown bricks and windows. Sheetrock and screws and just general debris left in our nicely groomed flower beds. Bushes trampled down. Painters dumping paint water that they used to water down the paint, on bushes, grass, and in the street. Not the responsible disposal of chemicals you would expect. No regard or respect for the homeowners property, PERIOD! The previous 2 reviews here on Yelp also mention common issues. Very frustrating to pay 10's of 1000's of dollars for shoddy work and unprofessional behavior. Framers that show up and spend most of the day on their phone instead of working, tape and mud guy unreliable, that is WHEN he showed up. CK's painting co., 5 star subbed out the work to another company whose work was to put it mildly horrible. Thinned paint, improper or not the necessary equipment to do the job right, did not sand doors etc where needed. Overall sloppy prep and finish. We thought the free paint promo that Five Star was offering would be a great way to save some money on this expensive remodel, only to find out they get that money back 10 fold by cutting corners and not providing the paint products or painter expertise advertised. Instead they sent us the D Team for our project that we paid top dollar. Who ever heard of rolling paint on a steel door. Plumbers, electricians, flooring, cabinets, nothing but problems every step of the way. Should be 0 stars for CK they did nothing to earn even one!

Do you want to work for a company that care about you as an employee, follows through on promises,…read moreand gives good benefits? Are you looking for steady raises or a owner that knows you by name? If you answered yes to ANY of these questions then run, run far. This is the worst place to work and stay away. Information was kept from us while on the job, raises were NEVER given out (they always want more). They have a stupid system where if you are late by 1 min you get a dollar an hour taken out of your paycheck for the week. Just an excuse to say they pay us more but they dont. They offer the worst medical insurance money can buy (I was told they cover coughs and not much else by the supervisor). Customers stay away too. There are several time product went out bad because no supervisor checked to see if they were up to standard. Several time customers came to pick up doors that had 30 min of work left on them because management never let us know. The straps that hold on doors may as well not be there and several times doors fell off and we were told to just ship them out with out looking at them for damage.

Pay is average at best and they've been known to tell an employee if they want to work there they will have to take a cut in pay. No benefits. I would not recommend working there.
