I had some sort of fried food with nduja (a spicy sausage that I forgot how to spell) for my starter and it was incredible. Then I had a beef and onion pasta that was great but the onion was completely different to what I imagined. The place looked really nice with mutti candles and other nice decor. But the best part was the service. The workers made me feel welcome. It felt like the whole restaurant was a big family gathering. Shame that the menu changes because what I had was great and I would order it again. Will come back

Adorable little Italian restaurant with authentic flavors, fresh dishes, and friendly service!…read moreHighly rated and for good reason, we had to book a reservation in advance and you get charged for no-shows or last minute cancellations as the restaurant is very small and would lose out on a table. The menu is rotational and the one in my photos are for the summer; we ordered a side of bread that came with olive oil/balsamic vinegar and was given a complimentary cup of gazpacho. They complimented each other very well and it was so wonderfully fresh with tomato, onion, basil, and oregano. My sister ordered the seafood linguini & I got the Agnello (Scottish lamp chops with veggies & potatoes). The linguini was quite salty that made the dish a bit unbearable but my lamb chops were absolutely delicious! They were a lot smaller than I anticipated, even though there were four I left the restaurant pretty hungry which was disappointing.

Good food, fast service. I skipped the drinks and dessert for budgetary reasons. The bill for 3…read morepeople (one of whom had a glass of wine) was the equivalent of US$74. But it all came crashing down at the end when I went to pay and the waiter tried to guilt me into tipping - which is not a common practice in the UK. He hovered over me as I put my card in the machine and the dreaded percentage options showed up on the screen as well as "No Tip" and "Custom Amount." I felt I was back in the U.S., where there's quite a lot of controversy about these screens but at least the staff usually look away at that time. This guy helpfully explained that I could tip - or not tip. Yeah, thanks. OK, buddy. No tip for you. I should have gone to Wetherspoon's.

When my friend suggested we go and try this place, I decided to do a bit of stalking first and look…read moreat their website - partly because I didn't know anyone who'd ever been here before, and partly because it was a distraction from revising for my finals. Their website looked really upmarket, with promises of amazing service and dedication to preparing the best and freshest food etc etc, so I was expecting it to be quite pricey. I wouldn't have minded paying twice as much as we did for the food, if not more; our meal was that good. We went for their 3 Course Set Lunch offer which will set you back a grand total of £6.50 a head (?!) and this place is now my favourite Italian restaurant in Edinburgh. It's nothing fancy, but then it doesn't try to be: from the second you walk in you immediately pick up on the family-run, authentic vibe and it makes you feel really relaxed. I love italian food and I've been searching all over Edinburgh for that perfect little local Italian place, the one you go to when you can't be bothered to cook but still want to go somewhere you know will be good yet cheap. I've lived here for 4 years now, and I think I can stop looking.

AND it just so happened that our taxi driver, Jim and his wife have date night at dal Patino every Thursday night. Between 5 of us the first night and 7 of us the second night (we invited Jim and Barbara to join us) we definitely tried the majority of the dishes. Click on the following link for the full menu http://dalpatino.co.uk/menu/a-la-carte/. Massimo, the maitre'd and server was amazing. They actually recognized our voice when we called for reservations the second night. Reservations are recommended as this place is small and quite busy. The food is fantastic! Quite possibly the best Italian I've had to date. We tried appetizers, main dishes and desserts. These three are at the top of my list: Crostini Calabrese Pacherri Gamberi, Asparagi E Pancetta Gnocchi Al Trionfo di Bosco If you go because of this review tell them the 5 Americans from Hawaii say Hi!

The quality of the ingredients is absolutely incredible, so fresh and tasty. Focaccia perfectly cooked and even the bruschetta (trust me is not easy to find a real bruschetta and focaccia in Edinburgh). The abundance of every dish left us full and happy. Amazing pasta too and the chef was stellar. Strongly suggested
