Everything. Very friendly. Dr Tonks made vme feel comfortable. Dr Tonks explained everything related to my sacrum issue and what was involved in the surgery. During surgery he discovered that I also had vertebra issues and immediately sent me to Dr Mundis at Green. Within a few days I had surgery for this issue with Dr Mundis who was also amazing. Without hesitation I would highly recommend Dr Tonks for his skills and for his personal care and concern for his patients. read more

Dr. Tonks did surgery on my badly fractured wrist; I broke two bones. He did surgery on the evening of my injury about six weeks ago. I am still healing, but improving steadily. Dr. Tonks seems to care about his patients. His manner is light-hearted and a bit quirky, but I very much like his personality. I trust his expertise and am glad to be under his care. Also, he has an excellent staff, and so far I've been able to get in touch easily for appointments or questions. read more

I fractured my left patella (knee cap) and Dr. Tonks was the ER surgeon on call at Scripps in La Jolla. He is not on my insurance network and the hospital admitting department couldn't tell me if he'd be covered. The hospital wanted to send me home but I couldn't stand or move an inch given the terrible fracture (in pieces). I cried in agony when the PT asked me to try to stand with crutches. Thankfully a very nice nurse advocated for me, called someone in charge and said I was at risk for a terrible fall so they admitted me. Dr. Tonks saw me first thing in the AM and he assured me he'd be covered because it was an ER situation and he was the only ortho surgeon on call, and the hospital is in my network. He was right! That the hospital couldn't answer this was surprising. Dr. Tonks was very professional and confident (which I like to see in a surgeon) and cleared things up with admitting. The surgery turned out well and I'm in PT now, improving day by day tremendously. I have a very fine, thin scar on my knee as if a plastic surgeon cut me and appreciate that very much! Dr. Tonks is an excellent physician and surgeon who is passionate about helping people. read more

Dr. Tonks is an excellent surgeon. I had a fall and fractured my hip and Dr. Tonks was the on-call physician at Scripps Memorial. I am very impressed with his expertise and bedside manner. He is extremely professional, and also has a very good sense of humor and strong communication skills. I am very lucky to have had him. I also want to give a shout out to the gentleman, Joseph and his office who handles pretty much everything. From the very first time I called Joseph he was professional, knowledgeable, and gets things done quickly. He was never irritated at all of my questions, He followed through on every single request. It's so rare to have an excellent physician and an excellent staff working together, but in this instance, it absolutely is happening. Very impressive. I highly recommend this position and his office! read more

SCRIPPS PATIENTS EDUCATE YOURSELF ON SURPRISE BILLING. Dr Tonks is not in-network with Scripps plans and will surprise bill you. My wife died of septic shock at age 50 after multiple surgeries by Dr Tonks. I won't get into what a horrendous doctor he is, or the lack of social skills or bedside manner. I'm here to talk about greed. Dr's will try to shake down patients by not disclosing that they are not part of your insurance network. My wife was double insured, BC/BS and Medicare. Medicare picks up whatever BC/BS doesn't. I NEVER received bills on her. We always stay with Scripps. A month after my wife died started getting hounded by Dr Tonks' bill collector, Eric Marquis. Dr Tonks and Eric are now sending me to collections for not paying them $47,000.... The amount they overcharged BC. Why not bill Medicare? Why not inform the patient of charges, before doing surgery? Apparently he doesn't work with BCBS and can charge whatever he wants, and just bill surviving spouses what he feels is adequate. So do I sit here pondering what this 47,000 bill will do to my credit. Everytime Dr Tonks billers shake me Dow, I think of my late wife, and cry a little. STAY AWAY FROM THESE GUYS. If you received surprise billing, report him to the government and complain to Scripps. Consumer Protection from Surprise Medical Bills... What is a surprise bill? Before July 1, 2017, consumers sometimes received unexpected bills from out-of-network providers when they sought services at an in-network facility. The bills were a result of a billing disagreement between insurers and out-of-network providers. Here are some examples of when consumers have gotten surprise bills in the past: A consumer had a surgery at an in-network hospital, but the anesthesiologist who provided care was not in their health insurer network. Even though the consumer did not have a choice in who their anesthesiologist was, that provider sends a bill to the consumer after the surgery. A consumer goes to an in-network lab or imaging center for tests and the doctor who reads the results is not in their health insurer's network. That doctor then bills the consumer for their services creating a surprise bill. read more

Simply look him up on the California department of commerce physician website. All you need to know.

Completely unprofessional and shameful medical office with shockingly illegal billing practices. Tonks takes advantage of patients who need emergency surgery and then bills them for thousands of $$ in flagrant violation of the No Surprise Act. his ASSistant Erik Marquis ignores the law and will continue to bill you incessantly in an attempt to extort money. Next step is a class action lawsuit. DO NOT USE THIS MEDICAL PROVIDER! read more

Receiving harassing bills from Dr Tonks "billing advocate". I have been advised by my insurance company that their direct billing is illegal per the No Surprise Act. My insurance company has also notified the billing office directly. They continue to try and directly bill me though my insurance company has already paid the share and advised them to stop. read more

I got a surprise bill from this doctor today with more than 15k. My insurance already paid them in network fee. This definitely violates no surprise bill from state and federal government. read more

Dr. Tonks is an excellent trauma surgeon. I had a nasty fall and he did a great job of putting me back together. Thanks Dr. Tonks read more

Dr. Tonks is a miracle worker! I severely dislocated my ankle and had multiple fractures. I was so lucky that when I went to the Scripps La Jolla ER, Tonks was the on-call ortho surgeon that weekend. He's not a man of many words, and he doesn't show up a lot in the hospital room, he is very brief, tells you to eat lots of protein and wraps your foot a very specific way that you aren't allowed to touch. He's very particular, and that's ok, I don't care, he's amazing at what he does and even the nurses would say he's who they would want operating on them if they needed it. The work he did putting my ankle back together was amazing. I have a rod, a plate and screws now in my leg but they cause no irritation and won't need to be removed. Only TWO weeks after the surgery he had me walking on it! They took his special dressing off, and that was it! No cast, no boot, nothing! It's scary but damn! I didn't need it! Everything you read online says 4-8 weeks! Everyday it got easier. My pain level even after the surgery was very low. I didn't have to take pain meds after day 4 or 5. The swelling was the only source of pain. I am 90 days post op and the only have some typical swelling that is not painful. I stopped limping after 5 weeks post op. I can walk on it all day and feel great! I forget about it most days already! A broken ankle can be one of the worst things, but Dr. Tonks has already made it feel like a little blip in time and moved it behind me so quickly. The man has major skills. I am so appreciative of him! read more

By far the BEST Trauma Surgeon in San Diego. I felt the need to make a review since I've been with him for 7 years. He is a very busy man! But worth every minute in his waiting room. Keep in mind he is a Surgeon on call so he's in surgery often. But if you want the best care.. He's your guy! I feel the need to refer to past reviews due to the front desk comments. A year ago he recently made a change of employees and now has a wonderful office manager. His previous two employees were always kind to me but I did notice they weren't the sweetest ladies. He now has a wonderful office manager who I've experienced nothing but the best just like the man she works for. If I'm ever in need of surgery, Dr. Tonks is the only doctor I would want in the surgery room with me!! read more

3 weeks ago Dr Tonks amputated my fiancé's ring finger and today as I look at his hand I am in awe of what a beautiful job he did. Anthony's hand simply looks like he was born that way. Dr Tonks is by far the best and most respected surgeon i have come across during my many hospitalizations and surgeries. after being in a near fatal car accident 8 months ago, Dr Tonks was on call and fixed my shattered pelvis/hip and my torn PCL. he always provided excellent care and really shows how much he cares for his patients. he's a super funny guy but also serious- he explains things very concise but very well at the same time if that makes sense. overall, i respect him SO much and i'm very thankful that he was one of many on my trauma surgeon team. read more

I had an appointment scheduled 5 weeks in advanced. When I arrived for my appointment I was 15 minutes early. 105 minutes later I asked the front desk how much longer must I wait to be seen. The ladies said "Oh, He is on his way here." Why did they not call and ask me to show up later or reschedule my appointment? They could have at least told me while I was waiting that he would be late or not even come in. read more

HORRIBLE customer service! I was referred to the office by sharp emergency on Friday, called this morning and the woman who answered the phone was so terribly rude and would not let me finish a sentence let alone help me. read more

Dr Tonks operated on my son after a fall that shattered both of his legs, ankles and feet. I have nothing but awe, admiration and praise for Dr Tonks as a surgeon and as a person. When every other doctor said, "ampute both legs" or later "fuse both ankle bones" (which would have left my son walking like Frankenstein and unable to walk uphill without falling over backwards) Dr Tonks kept saying, "let's give the body a chance" and "let's see what the bones will do". His hopeful optimism was a breath of fresh air and his surgical prowess was our saving grace. We kept sticking with him and his suggestions (and not listening to the others) and lo and behold - the body and bones came through. It's been many years since the multiple surgeries Dr Tonks performed on those bones, but not a day goes by that I don't see my son walking without even a limp and thank God for Dr Tonks. read more

As far as I'm concerned, Dr. Tonks is a miracle worker. I had an emergency surgery due to a compound fracture with my bone sticking out of my leg. Dr. Tonks performed the surgery, and, here I am, 18 days later, already able to walk ( very slowly, but still). Everything I read about this same injury had the patients in bed, casts, what have you... for 3 months to over a year. That's what I thought was going to be in store for me. Thanks to my miracle worker, Dr. Tonks, my leg is free of any dressing, and I'm going to be running around in no time at all. read more

Here is what I posted on my social media page today regarding "Doctor" Tonks: Damn this country's f**ked-up health care practices. Called DR. TONKS' 'office to find out what time my shoulder surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. The secretary asked me what kind of insurance I had: I told her Emergency Medi-Cal. She then told me DR. TONKS "doesn't accept that." After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I asked her why the hospital referred me to him, since it was the hospital who got me qualified for Medi-Cal..,she said the hospitals don't know in advance which doctors accept it or not. Here's the best part, though: DR. TONKS was the one who wanted me to go home and wait 5 days for the swelling on my shoulder to go down...the secretary told me that if he had operated on it THAT NIGHT, I would have qualified for his services because I was still in the ER as a "trauma" patient. I am now waiting to hear back from Scripps La Jolla as to what the hell I'm supposed to do now. And HEY, DR. TONKS--YOU'RE A REAL TRIBUTE TO YOUR HIPPOCRATIC OATH!!! "GOD BLESS AMURRICA, LAND THAT I LOVE..." read more

Dr. Tonks pieced back my shattered ankle and foot from a car accident I had last October. It required 6 screws and a plate up my lower leg. Honestly he told my husband he wasn't sure he could save my foot. Not only did he save my foot, he did a tremendous job & on every follow up appointment spent as much time as my husband and I needed answering all our questions. I'm now seeing a ankle/foot specialist closer to my home & he said "Your trauma surgeon did an incredible job, everything is exactly where it should be". Dr. Tonks is a busy man, but well worth any wait you may have. His assistant, Laura, is remarkable and always takes the time to answer my requests via phone or email. ~ Kym McQuiston read more
