I just had a call from a member of the family that owns/runs Schoem's Menorah Chapel, who apologized for the way I was treated in 2021. She assured me that the employees who had repeatedly broken their promises to me, we no longer there. Their recent Yelp reviews appear to bear this out... My original review appears below, and is based on my experience in 2021. I hope that now, in 2023, with new office staff, this doesn't happen to anyone else, and I have changed my rating from 1 star to 3, in hopes that the changes in office staff have eliminated the problems there. read more

Jordan and his entire staff were simply wonderful. My mom passed away January 20, 2021 after a heart-wrenching battle with dementia. Let's simply say Jordan spoke my language. I called him about a week or so before she died, clueless as to what we would even be able to do in today's Covid world. He was patient, compassionate and clearly gave me confidence that they would handle things and that we could have the type of funeral we wanted. The cemetery was in Long Island and our rabbi was from Pennsylvania and he worked everything out and everything went along smoothly. I believe part of what made things so successful was that I trusted them. I loved that there was no hard selling from moment one. Jordan was open about prices. My mother loved fine woods and he went crazy to get us the more reasonably priced one of the two caskets we choose when I would have given in to paying for the other one. He also talked out all sorts of decisions with me, patiently giving me options and encouraging me to do what I wanted and felt was right. They offered to go back to her assisted living facility to pick up her dress which the staff did not give them. My daughter went to empty her apartment and the dress had not been picked up so she took it to drop off at Schoem's which was just down the highway. When she got there, one of Schoem's staff called as they were at the facility and couldn't find the dress - put simply they got there minutes later! Diana was wonderful and patiently listened to me. Howard attended the funeral itself and was very respectful. Losing someone you adore as much as I did my mom was horrible, but I truly feel indebted to Jordan for making things easier for me, for being truly supportive and for providing the funeral that I wanted for my mom. read more

Not good. That's what I rate Robert Schoem in Paramus. Never thought I'd be leaving a negative review for a funeral home, but this place was unprofessional all around. Starting with our first meeting with Jordan Schoem, his mask kept falling off his face, his demeanor was nervous and fidgety, he did not have the great listening and communication skills one would expect from a funeral director handling the death of your loved one. He said awkward things in regards to my father's passing (at the time of our apt, my father was not dead yet). He did not provide us a receipt for our pre-payment of services. His questioning was scattered and he kept apologizing before asking us important questions such as, "I'm sorry to ask you this, but what kind of casket would you like?". It felt awkward and uncomfortable. My mother and I left the funeral home feeling uneasy. Did Jordan have any experience? It didn't seem so. Fast forward two days before the service, I was emailing with Diana because our friends & family were asking for the Livestream link to view the service. She responded that she was having trouble with the livestream :"Working on it right now. I just want to make sure all my ducks are in a row before we publish it. If they go through the site i can edit it no problem if I have to but if they save this link and then there's a problem I have to fix I don't want them to have a problem. So please send a disclaimer to check our site if they are having a problem at 12:45 or after " What kind of convoluted response is that? All I wanted was a link! We have elderly people tuning in, and they can't be held accountable to check the site if having problems,etc. Why couldn't Schoems get it under control? The day before the funeral I inquire again about the livestream link, Diana's response: "It's not on yet because I just finished setting it up. I'm trying to get it on the website but I'm also away from desk and working on 6 other funerals as well." Who SAYS THAT to someone? When we are paying over $10,000 for a funeral, want a livestream link to send to people, and you are going to REMIND me you are also working on 6 other funerals???? One would expect that the funeral home makes you feel like your funeral is important. It was an unacceptable response. The day of the funeral, we all show up early and Diana is tending to the computer (with her mask pulled below her nose), and I ask what is the status with the livestream. She responds in a really nasty tone (which my whole family heard), that "they are working on it!!" (with no apologizes). They could not get their YouTube streaming link to work and everyone joining the Youtube Link, would not be able to view. Finally, after 30 minutes of not getting the Youtube Stream to work, the Rabbi had a great idea- why don't we tell them all to move to HIS personal Zoom account, and we would try it on there. So we posted in the YOUTUBE chat, "please go to this ZOOM link!" You can imagine how difficult this was for most people to do this in a hurry. Many people missed the funeral because they could not get the live stream to work. This is already 8 MONTHS into a pandemic when they should have this DOWN by NOW!!! Also, it wasn't recorded & saved like it would have been if YOUTUBE worked, so a friend stood on the side and recorded the whole service on her cellphone and later uploaded to Youtube for those that missed the service. Thank goodness for her. Also, did I mention it was the Rabbi that ended up saving the day? In addition to not being able to stream as promised, Robert Schoem Funeral service completely forgot to book the Rabbi. The day before the funeral my mother called the Rabbi just to double check and confirm she was coming. "I did not know of a service tomorrow and I will be out of town!!!" Again Robert Schoem dropped the ball. My mother was able to procure a different rabbi from a neighboring town, but what a nightmare! Oh and once we finally got people onto ZOOM, about 10 minutes into the service Diana walked away from the computer, so my husband and I sat at the computer, allowing people into the room one by one (as they straggled in). Halfway into the funeral I realized that participants were not MUTED! So again, I did that myself. A professional who had been doing this for months would have thought of this. It was not on my mind during my father's funeral. From first meeting to the actual funeral, this place caused us much stress and disappointment. read more

Planning & facilitating a funeral/burial is never an easy task. Especially if a family member lives out of town. I can't recommend Robert Schoem's Chapel & funeral services enough for making it the most seamless & easy process. Jordan, the funeral home director was so professional and knowledgeable, helping us every step of the way. They were great with communicating with us during the entire process. I am extremely disappointed with the service and empty promises we received here. My Parents and I decided to arrange prepaid funerals for them. They met with Jordan Schoem several times and wrote up a contract for two prepaid funerals. Throughout the meetings he emphasized that unlike other funeral businesses they are a family run business, honest and trustworthy. He told us numerous times that he is the most honest person we would ever meet. We scheduled a meeting to finalize the contracts, but he canceled our meeting a few hours beforehand saying he was too busy that day. He stated he would call us to reschedule. We waited about two weeks and he never tried to contact us. Subsequently we left several messages on his personal voice mail as well as explaining the situation to two other employees, who both promised he'd get back to us soon. He never did. We would have understood if he needed to modify the contract but he never had the decency to get back to us. This is not the type of treatment I would expect to get at a place that works with families during a time of grieving. As a result, I would never want to work with them during such sensitive times. It felt disrespectful and unprofessional, and completely misleading. I will make my family arrangements elsewhere. read more

It is difficult to rate a Funeral home that does not return calls or emails in over 2 months time. I tried to make arrangements for pre-paid funeral so that in our time of need, our children would not have to deal with these details and expenses. I called and left messages with the office staff at least 4-5 times I emailed the funeral director but still no response.Although they have a slick web site and nice premises they must be missing compassion. I don't know how to get a response so I will go elsewhere. read more

This place is simply despicable. Do I even have to give it one star? First phone call - all wonderful. After that nothing. Take a look at the reviews. Some are 4 Stars others are 1. When choosing a funeral home after a loved one passes - do you really want a "hit or miss" situation?? I am in that right now. These are not good people. They do no return calls - unless they want money. They did not even create an obituary for our mother who is now 3+ weeks deceased. If I can help even one person steer clear of this place this has been worth it. Also - I am in the process of filing complaints with the NJ licensing bureau against this business. read more

From start to finish, Schoem's Menorah Chapel took very good care of us. Mom lived and died in California, so we worked with Sinai Chapel in Redwood City, CA to make the arrangements. They know everyone in the NJ/NY area, they considered several, but they quickly chose Schoem's Chapel as the best. This endorsement meant a lot because Sinai Chapel was...well...very picky. There was a lot of strain because part of our family is ultra orthodox religious and wanted Mom to be buried immediately. The other part of the family wanted a little time to gather friends and family to honor Mom. That was Mom's wish. But she also wanted the ancient traditions to be observed. We couldn't have imagined what came next. The religious side of the family, from NY, didn't understand that by California law, in order for a body to be transported across state lines, 18 signatures from the Dept of Public Health have to be collected. Since Mom died late on a Friday night, and since government offices are closed on the weekend, it was impossible for Mom to be buried on Sunday, in NY, which is what they were demanding. The religious zealots called, screamed, harangued Schoem's Chapel many times. All the while, everyone at Schoem's was calm and diplomatic while under heavy bombardment, And, they carried out Mom's wishes to the letter. Diana, the office manager was terrific. I called to confirm the financial arrangements - she was on top of it. And she made sure that the body wasn't buried before we could get there. This took a great deal of effort. We were afraid there would be trouble at the funeral. So, Schoem's dispatched Howard to be their representative. He efficiently, courteously, professionally and compassionately took care of the paperwork and made arrangements in case there was a disturbance. At the same time, he also was compassionate towards and cared for the needs of the religious members of the family. But what I am most grateful for was what Howard did next. He took me aside, helped me to breathe deeply, meditate, calm down and connect with my Mother. At my request, he took me to visit Mom privately one last time at the hearse. The dam finally burst and all the emotions tumbled out - grief, regret, sorrow. I was surrounded by my husband's beloved family who held me up as my legs failed me. The release I felt was profound and allowed me to go through the rest of the day calmly, even joyously, knowing my Mother's spirit was freed from her frail earthly body and was reunited with Dad at last. Howard looks, and I'm sure, can be tough when needed, but he is also a very compassionate and gentle man. When someone passes away you don't even know what you need. But Schoem's guided us through it and gave us what Mom wanted and what we needed. read more

Terrible place. They had a funeral scheduled after ours. So they rushed us through. At one point, all our guests were standing in the lobby talking. Mr. Schoem actually came up to me and started talking threateningly to me, because our guests hadn't left fast enough. It made a sad day much more stressful. I can't recommend them at all. read more
