First Avenue Funeral Service

East Harlem

Then in 2019 when my uncle passed we went back thinking we'd get the same quality service we received before, boy was I wrong. The moment we walked in we were met by pure ratchetness. Dudes that looked like they belong elsewhere eating wings and a so called funeral director (not the same one I dealt with in 2013) just as ghetto. No tact no empathy. I requested a change of casket since the one my cousin chose wasn't up to par and I was told it couldn't be done bc allegedly the body was already in the casket which I suspect wasn't true. Finally the morning of the burial they were over an hour late to pick him up and go to the cemetery. No reason given just kept telling us they were on the way. Unless this place has changed management and staff in the last 7yrs I would not use this place. I'd rate them no stars but that's not possible.

I was pretty much in shock when I contacted First Avenue Funeral Service in October from another…read morestate to make arrangements for a funeral. From the start they were compassionate, gentle and kind. There was no attempt made to upsell their services. They quickly took possession of my brother before I arrived in New York and it was a comfort to my family that he was no longer in the city morgue while I flew out to NY. They made the entire process of his wake and cremation as simple and gentle as possible. Mr. Lee was the one who prepared my brother for viewing. Mr. Lee is an artistic genius, due to throat cancer my brother did not look as he once did but Mr. Lee worked a miracle and despite the circumstances of his death my brother looked as if he had just settled down for a nap on my sofa. I half expected his ankles to be crossed as was his habit in life. While searching for a funeral home I found out that the one my family traditionally used was having legal issues over quality and was forced to look elsewhere to arrange funeral services. I'd contacted several funeral homes before deciding to go with FAS due to their location and was surprised to find that they were the least expensive out of all the funeral homes I'd contacted. They were budget friendly without being skimpy. Located in an area with several funeral homes, they are small, not so flashy and easily overlooked but they provide wonderful service and are kind and compassionate. I highly recommend them and will use them again should the need arise.

I've been to many funerals and, unfortunately, have had to arrange several myself. The McCorrys are everything they claim to be and more: kind, tactful, fair, and deeply understanding. They went above and beyond to help me make everything beautiful yet affordable, at a time when I was already devastated and struggling financially after losing my mom unexpectedly, at a time I had no work, during COVID. They worked with her burial benefits whereas the place mom had always wanted to be attended to (like many Cuban American from Union City) refused. Their compassion was not just professional -- it was human. In an industry where that can feel rare, the McCorrys stand out as extraordinary. I will never forget their kindness and will never go anywhere else. And I'm sure Mom would agree!

My father passed away on August 11, 2015. This was a tough time for my family, and we chose Central…read morebecause of a Korean funeral director on the staff, Ms. Gina Chong , that can communicate more clearly with my mother. After arrangements for the wake, cremation, funeral services were made, $9000 was given promptly to Central, including $1700 for a casket that was going to be reused by them anyway( I learned this from a crematory worker) After the funeral , my mother requested a copy of the death certificate . She assumed it was included in the bill. Ms Chong told her it wasn't but my mother paid her $100 to get one made. A month later, no death certificate copy was made. We called, but no return calls were made. My mother wished to visit the location where my father's ashes. So she called Ms Chong. She simply stopped picking up and started to block her calls. My mother has hypertension and was very stressed by this. I was just seething at the total indifference of Ms Chong. Finally Ms. Chong told her , " I don't know." It is New Jersey law for funeral homes to have an official document that indicates the location, time date, name of vessel, etc. if the remains are buried at sea. I called in a very influential friend for a favor to get this resolved. Almost instantly, Ms Chong produced the death certificate, the burial at sea documents, and an apology. The thing that angers me the most is that Ms Chong had the things we wanted ( and paid for) ready. She kept this from us either out of flippancy, laziness,or callousness. Not what you want from a funeral director. Her completely lack of empathy borders on sociopathy . The old adage about crooked businesses : they stop caring after the money clears. Yes, apparently includes this funeral home. FYI, my original review, was expletive laden, but I'm choosing the high road. Dad would have preferred it that way.

Central Funeral Home in Ridgefield, NJ services were top notch and flawless from start to finish…read more They offer great options, and everything is clearly laid out for easy navigation with cost/service. Beautiful, modern, tastefully decorated facility inside. Ample parking for guests. Funeral Director Gina, thank you so much for holding my hand through this process. You are a gem, helping people navigate through this journey. Staff is extremely accommodating. Central did all the work, I just had to make a few decisions. Central made this journey less painful and smoother process. There is a florist conveniently located across the street, The Flower, who provided beautiful arrangements. Experience at Central Funeral Home was seamless and easy during a difficult time. Final resting moments done properly. Thank you
