    Caledonia eggs

Perfect Sunday brunch! The place is really close to my home, and since I moved here I wanted try it. So it was our choice for a Sunday brunch! I order the caledonian eggs with smoked salmon! There were delicious!! Super tasty! My boyfriend ordered a sweet one, pancakes with mapple syrup and nutella, and were really good too! The place is so cozy and the staff was super nice talking to us in Spanish to practice with us! A must in my Glasgow brunch's list!

Great value for lunch last Sunday with two well sized courses & glass of wine for £12. The Argyll game casserole contained meat cooked to perfection and the Sunday roast was declared almost too large a portion. Pleasant service throughout and overall an agreeable atmosphere in the reataurant. Make the effort to head further out of the city centre than you ordinarily might and give this place a go.

So the last time I was at RBJ it must have been 8/9 years ago so I was quite keen to try it again. We booked for my dad's birthday as its close to the new six degrees north. This area is quickly becoming a destination of its own. I booked through 5pm but I might have had a few wines when i booked because I booked the completely wrong date and for the wrong size of party. First I thought this is going to be a nightmare to cancel and rebook but I was so wrong. I quickly called the restaurant and it was no problem to change the whole booking. The deal we got was 2 courses and a drink for £15 which was decent. I started with the rare beef salad! Which was delicious, rare thinly sliced beef with sesame seeds. Not at all heavy. And for mains I had Venison tagliatelle. Which was very nice. Unfortunately I was driving so it was soft drinks for me! This place hadn't really changed at all l. Good home cooked food. It's more bistro style than fine dining. The place is relaxed on a Sunday afternoon and still atmospheric on a Saturday night. The staff are super friendly, relaxed and ready to help. I'm not sure if they have always done this or I have only just noticed is that they now do breakfast. I'd be keen to try a weekend brunch menu!!

Well it's certainly a name you won't forget in a hurry. RoastingBJ's as we rather immaturely dubbed it is a small bistro like venue on Dumbarton Road serving fairly traditional Scottish fayre with the occasional twist. We booked a table for Saturday night and went not really sure what to expect. The menu is pretty safe, not necessarily a bad thing, but for those with a more adventurous palate you may be a little disappointed. The atmosphere was intimate but lively thanks to a large table not far from us and it was clearly popular as a seat didn't stay empty for long. For starter I had pigeon, a new culinary wonder for me, with a kind of sweet and sharp jammy compote type thing that I'm not sure if I liked but the pigeon was a taste sensation I would have again. As a group we also shared some of the best calamari I've had crisp on the outside soft in the middle and served with aioli, For main I had the duck with lentils, which was tasty. At one point I was using the fingers to mop up the gravy (I love gravy!) and we also shared some chips that were soft in the inside and crunchy on the outside with an unmistakable potato-y taste. An odd thing to praise but worth noting none the less. Overall it was a nice meal in a nice setting. Perhaps a little safe for my liking but all tasty nonetheless.

Had their cooked breakfast and it was huge! Can add extra items for £1. They are happy for you to change it up too e.g. Scrambled instead of fried eggs. The waiter was very nice and chatty. Great location re near transport and ideal for sitting to watch the world of Partick roll by. Better music would have helped but won't hold that against them. Will be back for dinner definitely.

Having had a wee nosey at the other reviews for this place i was a bit surprised to see that they weren't to enthusiastic, as my experiences here have been good on the main. It was only as i started to write did i realise the reason for the differing experiences. On both of my visits here i have been part of a large crowd, say 10 to 15 folk each time. This would explain why i had no recollection of the previously derided seating arrangements as they had moved the tables around to accommodate our parties on both occasions. Would have to say that in terms of nosh, this place ticked all the boxes for me, but left some in the group a little disappointed (i had rump steak on stornoway black pudding in red wine sauce....good god, some women say they like chocolate better than sex.....steak is the male equivalent.) Anyway, from my visits i would have to give the thumbs up, great service, kid friendly ( if no changing table), good grub and an intimate feel.....but i can see where others may be coming from.

The restaurant was small but cute and we'd made a reservation so although it was crowded, we were seated right away. We started with a tomato soup (great) and a fig tartlet with goat cheese (amazing). The three of us then shared a fish dish (can't remember what kind, but it was good), scallops (really yummy) and prawns (SO GOOD!). The seafood was really fresh and delicious (and what they are known for). We also got a good kick out of one of the appetizers, "cullen skink," because we were being immature and it sounded funny.

The decor is so opulent and under the sea themed- like the Little Mermaid meets The Water Babies! The service is really friendly and non-intrusive as well as being super efficient. The pre-theatre is available until 7pm- among the latest cut offs I've come across and at £15.95 for 2 courses and £17.95 for 3 it's an absolute bargain for food of this quality. While we waited for our starters we were offered (and accepted!) complimentary bread and dipping oil and vinegar, and were offered and accepted seconds! For starter I had a beautiful Camembert filo parcel with lovely salad. This was melt in the mouth tasty and a surprisingly very large portion. This restaurant is renowned for fish so I ordered that for my main course- the fish of the day was sea bream with dauphinois with potatoes and tomato salsa served with vegetables. It really was jaw-droppingly good. Everything was perfectly cooked and the quality of the ingredients made this a meal to remember. We ordered a grand sharing platter of desserts from the a la Carte menu and were delighted to tuck in to all 4 full size desserts from the menu- Nutella cheese cake, sherry trifle, sticky toffee pudding and 3 ice creams from a selection (we went with Mint choc chip, vanilla and Dime bar). All 4 in my party have big appetites and couldn't finish! The tea was served in beautiful silverware - it's worth mentioning that the cutlery and crockery throughout the meal was a joy to use. We also got a whole plate of tablet left on the table. Really generous dining with copious amounts of food in generous surroundings. Excellent value for money- I can't wait to return.

I heard…read morea rumour that they changed the name because people kept asking them who 'An' was... are people really that thick? It's changed a lot since then - physically there seem to be more tables than I remember, and the menu is now a single-page affair of broad-spectrum Scottish fare including meat dishes, whereas before it was a multi-page seafood-only extravaganza. I still fondly remember the shared seafood platter... mmmmm. However, although the menu may have downsized, the quality is still as high as ever. I started with crab spring rolls with a chilli jam dip, which were light and very tasty, followed by a Thai-style seafood medley in coconut sauce, which managed to carry a fair degree of kick without overwhelming the delicate flavours of the fish. Delicious. Herself had scallops to start, which were really fresh and cooked to perfection, and followed this with the lemon sole with salmon mousse. I had been tempted by this, but when it arrived I was quite glad I hadn't picked it as it looked a bit too creamy for my taste. Yet it disappeared without trace so clearly was appreciated! We were both hungry enough to manage a dessert - Herself had a kiwi and mango pavlova that seemed absolutely huge; I went for an intriguing coffee jelly in brandy snap basket with caramel sauce, although I declined the clotted cream option. I wasn't sure about the coffee jelly as it was a very different taste, but maybe it would grow on me over time. Overall, a fantastic meal; good portions, superb presentation, perfectly cooked and generally scrumptious all round. Although it was pretty full when we arrived for the early evening shift, the staff were attentive and helpful at explaining everything on the menu (to my disappointment, it turned out that a 'financier' on the dessert menu had nothing to do with accountants). The chairs are sumptuous and comfortable, although some could do with replacing as the seats are getting a bit on the saggy side; luckily cushions had been provided for those that were a bit too far gone. Oh - and there's a giant pink and yellow raffia giraffe called Felicity in the gent's loo... I have no idea why, but it's quirky and I like it.

As it was only lunch I restrained myself and opted for a starter of the fish cakes with a side order of chips, which was just as well as the fish cakes were a tad on the small side. This was mildly disappointing at the time, but actually they would have been fine as a starter if you were moving on to something more substantial. I was glad I'd ordered the chips as well though. Herself as usual went for the eponymous bivalve molluscs that are the house speciality. These were quite on the large side, and disappeared before I had a chance to get a picture of the bowl so must have been good! An Americano coffee to finish was of good strength and taste, even if it was only just over half a cup; presumably they were leaving a gap for the milk that I didn't ask for and don't want. Still, I guess if they'd topped it up with water it would be weaker and that would be almost as big a sin. The restaurant is quite large and was pretty empty on this particular lunchtime. They have a mezzanine area upstairs that you can rent for private groups, which would be great if you had enough folk who were seafood lovers.

The standard of the food is outstanding, the service is impeccable, they have a small but select wine list and a good cocktail menu. All in a relaxed and not overcrowded atmosphere. It's been too long since we'd visited, but it was just as good as we remembered. I had the tuna sashimi to start - which unexpectedly came with chopsticks - while Herself went for the tuna tartare. Both absolutely delicious, melt-in-the-mouth good. For mains, it was the halibut and scallops for her; I tried the monkfish, although with some slight trepidation over the banana, green lentil and chickpea sauce. I needn't have worried though, it wasn't a very strong curry and actually worked really well with the monkfish and the haddock. Just enough room to squeeze in a dairy-free sorbet for me - they had a lovely cucumber sorbet that was served with the tuna tartare, so I tried that. Herself can never resist a good cheese board, and this one was good (so I'm told). All in all, a fantastic meal. So good that I completely forgot to take any pictures. The sad news is that Derek, the owner is apparently planning to retire and is looking for someone to take over the business, so my advice is to get in there quickly before he's gone.
