I can not write enough great things about Universal Tires! Where do I start?…read more I came in around 11 to get a price on 2 tires. Mr. Ray, the owner, greeted me by asking my name. (He did not forget it through this whole process.) After getting my tire size, we realized they were not in stock. He advised me they will be in about 3pm today. Since I am visiting the area, I took this as an opportunity to go shopping. While I was out, my car broke down(ish). It started to sputter, shutter, and stall out. I've been traveling, its an old car with high milage so this action did not catch too much off guard. Anyhow, I made my way back to Mr. Ray in hopes he could not only put my tires on my car but help me figure out why I am stalling out and not going over 30mph. I came to a slow roll into his shop. "PUTT PUTT PUTT" and my little Mazda Tribute cuts off. Mr. Ray did not hesitate to try and help even though he said this was out of his specialty. He pushed the gas petal to the floor & a huge cloud of black smoke came out of the back. In conclusion, he put on the tires I needed, checked my oil/topped it off (at no cost), did an all around inspection before I left. What made it ABOVE AND BEYOND service (besides the top off on oil) was the fact he called a muffle shop (as he suspects I had a cat. converter issue) to get some quotes on help. Not only did he call for quotes, he had one of his mechanics FOLLOW me to the shop to insure I got there safely since my car was stalling out. (Follow me to the review on Bob's Mufflers. They are just as awesome!) This shop goes ABOVE AND BEYOND the call of duty. While shopping for tires, this is the place to go. By the way, 2 tires, after balance and rotation only cost $240. That is for Goodyear new tires. ;) (At Walmart, my tires were $87 each at lowest cost, not including putting them on. That goes to show you how great his price is. )

. Unfortunately I looked at the reviews and believed that I could trust this shop to be transparent…read morewith pricing. A couple red flags I should have noticed from the start was how they refused to quote me for the job. I got several quotes around RTP to bench mark the replacement of the transfer case chain and this was the only shop that wouldn't provide me a quote unless I dropped off my SUV and it would be a 160 diagnostic fee. I physically went into the shop to speak with David the service advisor and he mentioned how they were experts in MB, we discussed the common issue with the stretching of the borgwarner transfer case chain and it gave me confidence that these guys knew what they were doing. He also told me that they would not be the cheapest shop, but they will price accordingly. Prior to coming into the shop I asked David to provide me with a clear answer on the break down of parts and labor associated with the repair. They were not able to do that and kept beating around the bush giving very arbitrary numbers. The parts itself is 100 bucks and a liquid gasket is 10 bucks, so labor ended up being 1700! David was not able to give me the break down and at one point to me the gasket was priced at 50-100 dollar range. In the end it wasn't worth my time to argue with these guys as they continue to give me the sales pitch of "we sell a solution and do not provide a break down of labor cost" I can clearly see why they use that line because based on my calculations their labor rates are 300-400 per hour. When I picked up my SUV I got the invoice and asked for a break down of the repairs. Adam came out and discussed with me how they don't break down the cost and how they provide a solution. He asked if they came in at a lower price would I be so concerned about the transparency and pricing break down. I, of course, would not be as concerned about the breakdown because the math would have worked out. Even if you were priced at a 30% premium to other independent shops that would be reasonable, but in the end their pricing was as much as MB dealership prices which break down their parts and labor cost. Even McLaren breaks down their parts and labor cost, so I am not sure why it was such a big deal. In the end the pricing was reduced from 1793 plus tax for the repair to 1700. Lesson learned for me to not blindly trust any shop if they are not willing to quote for a specific repair.

The service dept is horrible. I only went there because I bought the car from Flow Honda in WS and I live in the Raleigh area. All the times I have been there I have had an appt for an oil/filter change. At one appt it was 2.5 hours for an oil/filter change; utterly ridiculous. With the modern tools they have that should take 45 minutes at most. I have never seen such dancing around issues and taking a position that they are right when evidence shows clearly they are wrong. The general manager said they found an alignment issue on my car when they didn't even mention it and it isn't on the service ticket. I was the one that pointed it out. They recommended just to get new tires, which of course would not have fixed the issue. I have a video that shows their recommendation on this. And don't expect them to return any calls or voice mails. Long story short, take your car anywhere else but here. I have had good experiences with Flow Honda in Winston-Salem, but Flow Mini in Raleigh is horrible.

I appreciated the provision of a nice loaner car, with no hassle getting it. I booked my appointment the day before and drove in early next morning, cautiously, with an engine overheat warning "pull over in safe place" flashing on my dash. They knew this. I arrived opening time 8am. No one contacted me the entire day(!) with a diagnosis/ cost estimate or update of any kind; I was not aware my car would be kept overnight. At 4:50pm, ten minutes before close, I telephoned and was told $2,400(!), it might take 3 days/ 2 nights in the shop. I asked for a detailed estimate and for the second time, gave my email. Still, an estimate was not sent.... That cost estimate was high compared to other mechanics. Standard customer service for an early morning "drop-off" (advance appt.): contact customer by 3pm that day, explain repair, provide a cost estimate for approval. Start work right away, priority to finish if a second day. That did not happen. Nobody seemed to care if it did. For a $200 repair, no big deal- but for $2,000/ 3 days in the shop, IT MATTERS. PRO A loaner car while being repaired repaired with OEM car parts skilled diagnosis of Toyota 24month/ 24,000 mile parts warranty CON left me hanging on diagnosis, repair cost no written description/estimate provided high price compared to competition (corrected at the end) no apology for dropping the ball on service In the end, the actual charge was $1,821.97 which was in line with local estimates, considering the use of OEM parts. I appreciated that adjustment. And it appears they did quality work. Time will tell. Will I go back? Probably not. Lacked valuing me as a high-dollar customer; too much time and drama.
