As an individual non-member shopper, they will give you a one day pass if you want to buy something here but there are some restrictions like no shellfish purchases allowed and such. To be an actual Restaurant Depot member, you need to have an Illinois business license. It's a huge warehouse and most customers are wholesalers or restaurant businesses. Shoppers walk around with large carts because they are typically buying large quantities! So it's all about bulk purchases, and much bigger bulk than say at Costco. Like as displayed at the entrance, you could buy a giant 50 lb bag of potatoes for $12.80! So, the store can be handy if you have the need as well as the storage space for such big bulk purchases.

I thought they would have what I was looking for: rectangular grater - there's a few types; chopping block - the wooden thick block I like was incredibly expensive; cous cous - 3 different kinds but none are organic. In fact there aren't much non-gmo or organic stuff here. I had high expectations I suppose. I also found a large bucket of tahini.

I'm not a barber nor a stylist. Just a consumer that wanted to get my first flat blade razor. Sure,…read moreI could have ordered it online and found loads of deals($). Or I could have searched Yelp for a noteworthy shaving goods store($$$). Instead, I found a shop where barbers and stylists go to buy their goods en masse. A trading shop per se, with products from all over the world and pricing from cheap to expensive. The shop is setup like those created for merchandisers, shop owners, and those buying in bulk. It's not pretty nor are products setup in a brilliant display. A shop keeper is on hand and not in view when one enters the store. There are racks upon racks with nondescript items piled. Tell the shopkeeper what you're looking for and off you go. So what'd I get? I was shown a number of flat blade razors. Some super cheap, some super pricey and others in-between. He mentioned having the old style and the newer. The older style is a safety razor which is a one-time use blade. Looks easy to use but also seems to be wasteful. I opted for a cheap plastic import which uses disposable blades. I paid about $11 dollars for two items and I have blades that will last me for the next couple years! (Blades used in this sort of shaver are ultra thin and create less waste than what's purchased for say a Gillette or Schick type razor). I'm using Youtube to teach me how to use the blade. The shopkeeper only knows so much..

Ever since, if someone asks me where I got the tools to cut my hair, this is the place. The prices were cheaper than I have seen anywhere else. There is many deals there that as real as you can get. Advance Distributors is on the SE corner of Pulaski Ave & Argyle across the parking lot from Aldi…read more My wife is a Filipina and anyone who knows Filipinos know about the Balikbayan Box that they like to send or bring home loaded up with American items that are coveted in the Philippines. Her brother Ed lives in Quezon City w/his daughter and 3 grandkids. 2 girls and 1 boy. My wife calls frequently to check up and see how he's doing (I mean even if there was a problem he wouldn't tell her). So anyway she was talking to him last night to see how he's doing and if there were any specific items that he needed. The 7 year old granddaughter was asked if she wanted anything. She doesn't want anything like a Barbie doll she wants an i phone X. Yeah right let's get her a $1000 i phone X. Maybe one for her sister too lol. We recently found out after years of driving by that it is open to the public. This coupled by our plans to go to the Philippines early next year we ventured into the building that houses Advance Distributors to see if there was anything we could find. Upon entering we found row after row of merchandise some of value and others not so much (kind of like a giant flea market). I met one the owners Vijay who told me they have been there since 1974. It was originally owned by his father and now he & his brother run Advance Distributers. He told me he would give me a discount, but much of the discount is volume driven and I didn't need to buy more of certain items. Unfortunately there wasn't much that we needed from the store & many of the items that were name brand items I have bought when on sale at other stores at lower prices.

If that sounds like you, this is the place for you. That's doubly so if you want both absurd and designer fragrances at discounted prices. Once in a while, things cost the same as at a regular store (hello, seasonal candy), but generally these are Five Below prices. Some things are sold in bulk for even more savings--nag champa super hit is a steal here! I like to come here for packing and mailing supplies. Never spend $5 for a roll of packing tape again! Bubble mailers of all sizes are $1.50 for two! These are the exact same things you'd buy at the UPS store but without the steep markup. The staff is a whole lot friendlier, too. It's also good for coloring books--so cheap, and some kids just go right through them. Now, the downside. They sell out of things fairly often. The place is not beautiful. You get dollar store quality for many items with dollar store prices. There's often only one type of a given item, so if you don't like the color on hand, tough cookies. It's close to both the Lawrence and Pulaski buses, but not the train or bike racks, and parking a car can be a pain. Keep your expectations low and your mind open to have the best possible shopping experience here.
