The guys "bears" are super nice, the establishment screams kindness and if you look around at all the signs you can tell they are for the community -- and it's nice to see people looking out for not only their own but everyone. The place is fun, bright, and exudes happiness. They are very green and environment friendly. Now the food -- the food was so delicious that, we first had a lobster roll and had to come back 30 minutes later to try a scallop and crab roll. Everything was top notch, including their freshly made tartar sauce. My boyfriend and I want to come back every single time we are in DownEast Maine. We need to try the whole menu. Hi friends, your traveling foodie here with another tish delish review for Riverside Takeout. This place is the best take out in Machias, hands down. It is run by two incredible people who know their food and are too funny as well. Not only that, if you have furry family with you (your pet) they get a free treat too and doggie ice cream! Who does that? They do apparently! Not to mention that everything you get, receives a tiny rainbow flag. It's adorable! We seriously love these guys. Everything we got here, we loved. Here are the highlights: We had their lobster roll (light and delish), shrimp roll (it was perfect), fried clams (yum!), fried pickles, broccoli bites (fried broccoli and cheese served with ranch), fish and chips (the best hand down), haddock sandwich, their delicious ice cream in a generous portion with an ice cream cone fantastic for sharing. If you are on a diet, do not worry, they have some healthy options too. They've been around for 12 seasons. They are not open during the winter. Their menu changes so they'll have something new the next year. Depending on what you get, it can be a bit pricey, but the quality is well worth it. Whichever you pick, you will enjoy! Have been in the past and was impressed. Went today and was underwhelmed. Clam basket had a very skimpy number of huge, bordering on grotesquely large, belly clams. There was almost more tartar sauce than clams in the basket. We ordered a mixed seafood platter at the much fancier sit down place right down the way and the belly clam portion on the mixed platter was larger than the entire portion of this clam basket for the same price and the clams were better at the other place. Fries were not done, which is always a let down. Lobster roll was good but was on a mini bun, expensive for what you got. Overall, pretty meager offering compared to what it once was. I stopped by Riverside Take Out on my way back to Campobello Island after visiting the Blueberry Festival in Machias this summer. Having passed this little outpost a few times, and leaving the festival somewhat hungry, I thought it was a perfect time to see what they had to offer. I was craving a crab roll - so I ordered their regular version (served on a hot dog roll and can be made with or without lettuce). They have a large (or jumbo) option that is on a hoagie roll but I wasn't ready for that much food. Though it is a counter service style place, they were friendly and prompt. I also wanted to mention how glad I was to see the plethora of pamphlets and advertisements on the nearby walls in support of the local area parks and animal shelters. It was nice to see such forward thinking being promoted. Very Disappointing! I have no problem paying for good food...but this food is mediocre at best! I have been here many times over past 8 years but last 3 years just really noticed quality going down hill, even the tartar sauce for the haddock was noticeably lacking in anything green,,,just mayo and maybe one peice of relish in 5 bites! Let's just say I came back the next day... ...for another crab roll. A gigantic, creamy (but not too mayo-y) crab roll on a buttered toasted hot dog bun. For under $7 "gasp" my Maine-bred, Brooklyn-based heart skipped a beat. Additionally, these guys are friendly, serve excellent sweet potato fries and make a crisp homemade coleslaw (with a hint of horseradish?). Oh my goodness, some of the best food we had on this trip to Maine. We pulled up, drawn in by the inclusivity displayed in human rights and diversity flags. Then we ordered their special monster haddock burger, potato salad, and a garden salad. Culinary creativity met fresh ingredients and danced across our tastebuds. Salad was made with fresh greens, flowers, and outstanding delicious (inadequate to describe it but will have to suffice) homemade blueberry dressing. If you're heading north out of Machias you can easily miss Riverside Takeout since the windbreak trees beside their sign now hide it. Heading south on Route 1 it will appear as a simple mobile home in a lot beside the highway as you enter into town. But no matter which direction you are headed make sure you do NOT miss this dog-friendly lunch treat. From a distance their food trailer appears tattered and worn, but as you approach you discover that every inch of their restaurant has been hand decorated with either menu information or community notices. On the menu you notice the term "monster" is used liberally to describe the "large" size of many of their dishes. This is true Maine diner food: hamburgers, hot dogs, and lots of seafood. The prices are VERY reasonable and the service is extraordinarily friendly. Heading north we had the lobster roll, the monster crab roll, and a cheese burger, all of which was very good. The non-monster Lobster Roll was a reasonable portion and made without heavy mayonnaise -- just lobster tossed in butter on a toasted hot dog bun. On our return visit I had what has to be their signature dish: a monster haddock "burger" and curly fries. The haddock "burger" is a whopping slab of haddock fillet that spills liberally from the bun, breaded and fried to perfection. They included a fork with the sandwich, which makes sense after the tender and tasty haddock begins to disintegrate after a few bites, falling in clumps back into your sandwich basket. It was good to the last bite. The curly fries were right out of the fryer, crispy-creamy, and free of a heavy spice coating. They were especially good sprinkled with a little malt vinegar they offer on their condiment rack. The "free ice cream for dogs" is no joke -- they really REALLY want to make your dog happy and will almost insist that you treat your dog to a bowl of vanilla with a dog bone garnish. They also offer burgers for dogs (not free) that are conveniently served without buns. read more

The food was better than it used to be, and the prices were good, but the waitress I had was rude to my family and myself. We were in a small group of 6 and she wouldn't put tables together so we sat away from each other. When we said thank you she didn't say your welcome or anything. At the end of our stay we were about to leave and asked for desserts in a to go box and she didn't put mine in a box so when i went up to ask for one she said "you should have asked for that before". This is what my childhood tasted like during the warm Spring and Summer months growing up in Downeast Maine. The owners are honestly the nicest guys ever, and make you feel so welcome when ordering over the phone to make a pick-up order, or when you order from them in person. It may not be the fanciest, in fact, it's messy at times, and has a real "eat with your hands" vibe, normally coating your hands in the salty sweet oils of butter, but this place has a certain class and charm that makes it stand above the rest. Don't let the look of the place deter you. It's just a take-out spot without any frills. But if you want a nice fresh lobster roll, this is the place to go in the Machais area. And here, they ask you if you want lettuce on it. Which is great,because I usually forget to ask to skip the lettuce. There are two size rolls. I chose to get the smaller size which was $10.99 , and it was absolutely delicious, and plenty for me. Both men at the window were extremely friendly and it was a real nice experience.
