There was an air conditioning unit in one window which had a cord trailing to the wall outlet and would therefore not allow the shutters to properly closed and with no shade to pull down it kept the room exposed to the outside. Fireplace did not work. Continental breakfast was extremely sparse. How hard would it be to get some baked goods from the next door bakery. Due to room availability, we stayed a few nights in Room 10 and then Room 8 for a couple nights. Both rooms are on the second floor. This was the first time we stayed since the remodeling. The updates are very nice and most welcome. At all times, the staff was friendly and engaging. Nanette and Maggie were especially helpful. I wish that this could be a five star review for this charming and historic inn. However, some important issues subtract stars. MINUS 1 STAR: The lack of an elevator requires one to climb the staircase, a task made more difficult with luggage. The stairs present a challenge for seniors and those with health concerns. Though quaint, the round doorknobs and metal room keys present challenges for those with arthritis or other conditions. MINUS 1 STAR: The prior reviews regarding the HVAC in the rooms remain in force. Adjusting the heat was difficult. We ultimately found it easier to turn the gas fireplace on and off as needed. And the water heater is insufficient. On Sunday morning, we ran out of hot water as other guests were first to shower and bathe. MINUS 1 STAR: The remodel sacrifices guest functionality for accessorizing. Nearly every flat surface in both rooms was filled with pottery and other decorations. As a result, we laid our hard side suitcases open on the floor and operated from there. In Room 8, which features dark blue walls and a dark wood floor, a pair of short black tables holding pottery and other objects sit at the corner of the bed. To avoid tripping over these at night, I draped a white tee-shirt over these.

Shortly after, the refrigerator began making a loud, repetitive knocking noise. We contacted the host again to report this issue and asked that it be addressed when checking on the fireplace. The unit above us was occupied, and we experienced excessive noise throughout the night, including loud stomping that made it difficult to sleep. When we contacted the host the following morning to ask whether the upstairs unit would also be occupied for our second night, her immediate response was that we could "just check out." This was not a reasonable or helpful solution, especially considering we had paid for a two-night stay. We expected the host to communicate with the upstairs guests and ask them to be mindful of the guests below. Additional concerns included water pressure issues. While the bathtub is visually appealing, after running the water for approximately 20 minutes, it barely filled, making it unusable. Flooring throughout the unit is uneven, with large gaps between planks partially covered by rugs, creating both comfort and safety concerns. While snacks and drinks were provided, one of the items. a mini loaf had visible mold and was not safe for consumption. Due to the combination of unresolved maintenance issues, excessive noise, and poor communication from the host, our stay did not meet reasonable expectations for the price paid.

Melt my heart When we entered the house we were told there are two separate rooms on the second floor. This house does not have an elevator so you have to carry up your luggage. The first floor is a common area to enjoy. The decor is clean, classic, and suitable for the home. The home smelled fresh, the areas were wiped down and organized. We even had breakfast waiting for us in the fridge and home made cookies on the counter. Up to the second floor and into our room to the left we were greeted with a spacious king bed with a working fire, seating area, and best of all, jacuzzi tub. Stand up shower but the tub is where it's at. Doug walked us through all the features of the TV, remote controls, jacuzzi buttons, and history of how this once barn became a home. By the time he left we felt like family. Wish we found this earlier so we could have stayed longer. Before he gave us the keys and retired for the evening we were given restaurant suggestions in walking distance along with a coupon good to use at a few of them if interested. Built in 1830 in the town that gave rise to the Civil War, this charming B&B, a stop on the Underground Railroad, is a virtual museum of mid-18th century and Victorian American History! (And this place is supposedly haunted by a previous owner!). The current owners Joe and Susan are a wealth of knowledge of the history on the house and the area! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED to adults and teens (with adults) of any age! (There are too many antiques around for tiny hands to touch.) Hallauer House is just 4 miles from the heart of Oberlin, but trust me, it will be worth the drive to this gem on the Underground Railroad if you are looking for peace and quiet, an exquisite 5-Star gourmet breakfast, a spa package, a workout room, if you so choose, and delightful hosts who work very hard to make their guests feel warmly welcomed. The bed & breakfast itself has quite a bit of history within it's walls. The hosts, Susan and Joe, are happy to acquaint you with myriad antiques and artifacts they've collected throughout the years. The house is quite old - 100+ years. Of special note are the leftover markings and trap door from the underground railroad which used to run through the house in the 1800's. I would highly recommend booking with the Hallauer House as far in advance as you can. They get booked up quickly AND there isn't a better place to stay in Oberlin!

The Western Reserve Academy is two blocks away across the street, so book early if your trip falls around graduation ceremonies.
