    Sassy and friendly foal

WOW. River's Bend Ranch provided me and boyfriend an experience we unanimously considered to be few and far between. The scenic site was home to the meditative retreat we didn't know we needed. After looking to schedule a horseback trail ride through Groupon, we decided it best to stay overnight in the area. Caroline, I believe her name, at front desk reception scheduled us last minute for a two night stay in the Wild West Cabin on the property. The cabin was spotless upon arrival. The horseback ride was tranquil and we enjoyed seeing the animals (pig, goat, horses) who were all very friendly. The foal was also quite sassy and friendly with much personality. River's Bend Ranch is located about 20 minutes from Massanutten and about 35 minutes from James Madison University. If you're looking to stay in the area, River's Bend Ranch is better than any airbnb or hotel by far. Visit Dates: 9/21-23/19

We went here for my daughter's birthday. She loves horseback riding and we were greeted with a friendly smile. The staff was courteous and very good with young children. My niece was a little nervous at first but they give you time to get to know the horses and get comfortable. The trail was ideal for young kids but if you want to go fast you would have to get a private lesson. We went at a slow and steady pace. Saw a bunch of the deer along the way and had a great time. Would highly recommend if you're looking for a great bonding moment with your kids.

We are on a family vacation and looking for outdoor activities to do, being in Virginia horse riding came in mind. River's Bend Ranch gave a great experience to our group! We had 4 children and 3 adults. The 2 guilds worked well with the kids who where a little nervous at first. The trail ride was nice it was about an hour long, it took you down by the Shenandoah River, though the woods and up and down the path. So it's not just one level a nice ride. I would recommend it for beginners, experience riders they also offer private rides. In all it was a great morning and I would do it again.

My husband surprised me with date here to go horseback riding and it was such a delight! My husband and I were the only ones on the tour and the guide made great conversation. The horses were very friendly and so gorgeous! The trail goes by a river and has a beautiful view. We will definitely be back in the future and I definitely recommend coming here! !

Connect with nature at the Ranch!

I visited the Ranch for a yoga retreat and had a wonderful experience! The entire group stayed in the Lodge House which had plenty of rooms and most rooms had connecting bathrooms, which was great privacy. The house was very clean and our group enjoyed both the top and bottom porches for lounging around and watching the sunrise and set! I also went on a horseback trail ride which was conducted by 2 great staff members at the Ranch that did a fantastic job of managing the horses on the trail even when a few got unruly :) For the cost of $35 for the horse back riding experience was great and I would recommend it, especially in the Fall. I should also note here that our house and a fabulous hot tub outside that was spectacular for relaxing and taking the night sky in. I look forward to coming back to the Ranch as it offers the perfect remote getaway from the city!

Sunrise from the rocking chairs on the cabin porch.

We stayed in one of the cabins for a few nights and WOW - what a relaxing and beautiful place! The cabin was comfortable, spotless, and chock-full of amenities (full kitchen, massive jacuzzi, and a porch with a view of the sunrise and the ranch's rolling hills). We made full use of the propane grill, as well as the firepit behind the cabin each night (which came fully stocked with weeks' worth of firewood), took a relaxing trail ride on horses with Cassie, and, most importantly soaked in the peace and quiet the entire time. A big thanks to the staff for being so welcoming and accommodating, and we are looking forward to coming back.

This was our first visit, and I would go back in a heartbeat! We stayed in the Cowboy Cabin. It has everything you need! Clean, and with great views. Fire pit out back w/picnic tables. The horseback ride through the trees and along the river was fun. The ladies who led the ride were great. Some of the friendliest customer service around!

What a great place!!! The staff was very friendly. The cabin was so clean, updated, and roomy. This was a last minute check in, after hours, and the staff was happy to accommodate us. The view is beautiful. This ranch is a wonderful place to relax and enjoy yourself. We also did a trail ride, the girls that took us out were friendly & professional. This a great place to connect with nature in a modern cabin with all the necessities, even a Jacuzzi tub. We will definitely be back for a longer stay. A huge thank you to the employees for making our stay great!!

Came here for a one night stay on a whim and I'm so glad we found this gem! We stayed in one of the one-bedroom cabins and there was plenty of room and an amazing Jacuzzi tub. Guest service was wonderful and the place was very clean. I loved being away from the noise and under the stars with the amazing mountain view. Utensils and cookware is provided and there's a grill and fire pit available. There is an outdoor hot tub in the common area, but we didn't use it because we'd have to drive down. We did a ride on the horses in the morning, the scenery was gorgeous and we rode alongside the river. I highly recommend and hope to make my way back some day to see the fall foliage.

Found this place on Groupon for a trail ride. Wonderful experience. The staff was warm and welcoming and the horses were well trained. The property was beautiful and riding along the river was awesome. Highly recommend for a weekend getaway or a day trip.

A group of 16 of us booked for the weekend and I honestly can't think of enough great things to say. Seriously, everything about this place was AMAZING! I organized the trip, so I got to work with one of the owners, Jesse, to get everything set up. He was helpful, responsive, accommodating, and really kind. I organize a lot for my friends and myself, and this was one of the easiest. Upon arrival we were checked in by the other owner, Gary, who immediately made us feel like we were at home. He gave us a wonderful tour of the property and told us everything we needed to know for a wonderful stay. This property is nestled in the hills of WV and the views are STUNNING! Every space and room is beautifully appointed, really leaning into the upscale rustic vibe you'd expect in a mountain retreat. So many beautiful nooks and crannies to sit and read or play games or just nap. The pool and hot tub are gorgeous and Logan at the pool bar will take amazing care of you! They provide a complimentary breakfast of freshly cooked eggs, meats, and biscuits/scones. The lunch and dinner menus are varied and everything we had was delicious. Our servers, Rain (spelling ??) and Angie were stellar and the ambience was just perfect. Every single one of us left feeling refreshed and we were all sad to leave. Do yourself a favor and make the trek out to Lost River and treat yourself. This place is amazing and I'm already planning my next trip here with my partner.

A winding road through a rocky valley with a mountain stream that flows to the Lost River. Then you turn into the Guesthouse and the stunning main building and cute cabins are so perfectly placed on the property with lovely landscaping. Walk into the main lobby to be greeted by Gary, one of the owners. He was super pleasant and took us on a tour of the property pointing out the dining room, bar, pool (although it was still closed for winter), hot tub and sauna, gym, multiple media rooms, game rooms and lounge areas, and then our room in the Hobson Cabin. The room was well appointed and clean. The shower was beautiful and had great water pressure and temperature. The balcony had wonderful views of the parks close by. A country breakfast is served daily at 9 and is a great start to the day. The dining room is open in the evening for drinks and dinner with a menu for anyone! Gary and Jesse are always close by if you ever need anything and make you feel most welcome. We can't wait to visit again in the summer so we can make full use of the pool and enjoy some nearby hiking!

The private hot tub and fire pit were awesome and we used both. We wanted a cozy getaway and that's definitely what we got. The only downsides were that the fire pit solo stove didn't have a lid to help it go out so we had to wait outside longer than we planned until it went out and there were a good amount of bugs (expected in the area the cabin is but it was still a lot). The views and our overall experience at the cabin was exactly what we were hoping for so we will definitely be back! We stayed in Cabin #8. The privacy is on point. The hottub and the swing, perfect! We did some grocery shopping to make our meals on site. They also had a small grill. The washer and dryer in the cabin made a huge difference because we went hiking a couple times and it was hot out! The only thing that threw me for a loop was their small pond. It looked amazing in photos but in person it was a small pond with rocks and gravel. But everything else was wonderful! You can go offsite to see beautiful waterfalls etc. There is a community rec center across the street with a large pool. We stopped in to see it. Staff there was informative and friendly. So if you wanted to hop out of the Hawksbill gate and go across the street you can enjoy the pool!

The cottages are in Dyke, VA about 20 minutes from Skyline Drive so it's very easy access for hiking. My husband…read moreand I both love the outdoors and love to hike, and we were looking for a location that would cater to both of these where we did not need to travel far. When we found the web page for Whispering Oaks, we knew that we had found our place. This home was exactly what we had been looking for! It looked warm and inviting, comfy, spacious, and it was close to many of the things that we wanted to do. We booked right away. The home did not disappoint. We arrived in the evening after dark, but the instructions were so specific for check in that we did not have any delay in finding the home or getting in. Everything was set up perfectly and was spotless. We booked at the beginning of December, and our hosts even set up Christmas cds for us and put movies out as well. We were able to come in and get settled quickly, and before we knew it, it felt like home. We put on a fire (there were firelogs as well as a huge supply of firewood waiting), turned on the television, and enjoyed lounging in the living room. The living room is huge-- the pictures truly do not do it justice. The ceilings are incredibly high and impressive, and it truly does make you feel like you are living outdoors (without the cold that is). The remainder of our stay was wonderful as well. We had all of the kitchen supplies that we needed to cook as well as other basic supplies that we needed to function as if it were our own home. Hiking, our main goal for the weekend, was also incredibly convenient. Our first day in town we ventured to the Nature Center to get oriented for a hike (this was not necessary, however, as our hosts left maps of all of the trails for us in the kitchen, but it is always nice to get a person speaking from experience about the trails nearby). We decided on the Upper Shamokin Falls trail, which did not disappoint- it was both challenging and beautiful. The second day it was a bit drizzly, so we decided to travel the walk around the golf course to the nature trail around the corner. We had an easier trail for this, but it was gorgeous and we still got a few miles in with the walk around the course. There are tons of trails to choose from within a short drive or walk, so no worries on variety. Overall, this has to be one of our favorite places that we have visited in the past few years. If you are looking for a place to stay in the area, Whispering Oaks is a wonderful choice.

The view from my room overlooked the lawn where all sorts of activities take place, from folks walking dogs to groups posing for wedding party photos. The ground level entrance to the building features a lovely reading room stocked with plenty of newspapers, books and magazines. The room next door offers complimentary beverages and snacks and stocks a good library of brochures highlighting local sights. My room, located on the second floor, was accessible by an elevator and stairs. That level also has a large banquet room, a parlor with a beautiful piano and access to balconies overlooking the lawn. There is also a pantry stocked with breakfast items in the morning including yogurt, fruit bars and cereal. And plenty of coffee (plus coffee makers are in the rooms). Guest can opt for daily maintenance of their rooms to have beds made, towels replaced and the basket of personal care amenities replenished. The desk and free wi-fi made it easy to handle emails and other tasks in the privacy of my room. And the large closet and full-sized dresser amply accommodated my wardrobe. A real highlight for me was the chance to spend mornings jogging around this beautiful campus or strolling over to the collection of boutiques, coffee shops and dining spots that border one end of the university. There were also nearby bikes that could be rented for a cycling excursion as well. A nighttime stroll included a stop at a nearby room in a separate building where Edgar Allan Poe once lived and worked when he attended classes here. The location provided a perfect hub for exploring the area's weekend farmers' market, nearby wineries and scenic hiking spots and historic landmarks. The Colonnade Club is definitely worthy of being on the college honor roll!
