Riding on the River Rose Cruise is one of the best things to do down at the River Front in the Hudson Valley.

It's an all wood vessel designed after the old sailing sloops. And I must say it's a very good-looking vessel. The crew, which was made up of almost all volunteers, were great and very personable. As part of the trip, we all got to help hoist the sail which was quite the experience. It actually takes a lot of work and people to hoist this massive sail. We sailed in the evening and got to watch the sun set over the city. We were lucky that there was enough wind to get us moving but not too windy that it made the sail rough. We had a such a great time and wished that the sail was longer!

The sloop was hanging out by the Boat Basin off Riverside Park when I wandered in and got to speak to some of the volunteers who work there. They do school tours regularly, but also have tours open to the public and can be hired out for private events. The really cool part is not only do they offer the option to volunteer on the boat, but even if you're paying for a tour you get to actively participate in the actual sailing of the vessel, which takes a lot of work! It's a really unique experience, especially in this city where not many of us really get to interact with boats, much less understand how an older replica like this actually functions. I also got to see and pet some of the wildlife that live in the Hudson, among them a clam. eel, and a little bottom feeder whose name I can't remember. See picture ;)

I'm a licensed captain with a masters. a south wind of any size can be dangerous because of the long fetch from the south, and the poorly angled floating dock- jetty. the Dockmaster could see as we were docking that we were trying to tame the beast and he just walked away. yes- I should have left but other circumstances prevented me from doing so also- and teenage party errupted at 1 am directly across the dock from our boat. Coming from the nearby Gull Harbor Marina, I'm quite jealous of the condition and atmosphere of Riverfront Marina. The only thing holding me back from Riverfront, which is more of a matter of personal preference rather than quality, is they have no breaker wall. I watch some of the smaller boats bounce around in the marina like swimming pool toys and I enjoy the tranquility of the barges used as a breaker wall at Gull Harbor (that's about all I like about Gull Harbor; see related review). Whenever I pull up to the guest dock at Riverfront, I am almost always greeted by at least one or two girls offering to grab my ropes and assist me in docking and tying off. They are always friendly and very courteous. The condition of this marina absolutely amazes me. The docks are in immaculate condition. You can comfortably walk around your dock barefoot if you wanted to. Everything seems to be well maintained. There were times when I was at my friend's boat when I noticed the girls were out clearing some minor debris from the water surrounding the docks and some of the boats. They obviously care about their customers and keeping the boats free of debris. The office usually appears to be staffed. Any time you go there during business hours, somebody is usually in the office. If you need something, there is always somebody around you can contact. The prices here are reasonable and in competition with the others. The location is also prime if you're into the nightlife at the Newburgh Waterfront. Parking can be a little tight. Having so many people around makes it seem a little more safe. The nice part about them not having barges surrounding the place is it makes for a great view. The downfall is when the river gets rough, sitting out on the dock isn't all that relaxing. If they'd install a seawall around the marina, this place would by far be the best around.
