This is a wonderful neighborhood establishment. Harry is a great bartender. The first time I visited, I ordered a dry martini, up, with olives; he had run out of olives and left the place to buy a large jar of olives from some local establishment. That is what I call service. I've lived in Central New Jersey for fifty years, but I never visited the Tavern until two months or so ago. In my five or six visits, I have never had a conversation with the patrons which was not interesting and which compelled me to return to the place. And the burgers are great! Some of the reviews on here claim that the regular clientele here are mostly older, male, & "homogenous", but on a weekday late lunch, that was not case. People of all ages, genders, & walks of life were here enjoying the great food & drinks. Everything here is reasonably priced, & the staff & other patrons were very friendly. Clean inside, separate men's & women's restrooms, & ample parking. The Buffalo wings were awesome, & would be amongst the best of NYC, if they were in NYC, & not an hour away in Piscataway. I don't think there are too many places around here like this - the other pubs seem large & corporate, & it seemed like everyone here really appreciates this place. You don't need to go to Philadelphia for a cheese steak no more. Holy hell, this place is serving up one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever had in New Jersey. Yes, I've been to Philly before and yes, I would put this sandwich up to the best there. Perfect balance of meat, cheese, peppers and onion on wonderful soft bread. The guy in the kitchen is a wizard. I also got the onion rings and it paired well with my 2022 cheesesteak (You see what I did there?). If you haven't been here before , stop in and try the sandwich. This local watering hole ACTUALLY puts out great food... My favorite menu items are the burgers, and the fish tacos are delicious AF! I work in the area and usually order out for lunch to-go. But, sometimes I'll sit for a drink while my food is being made, and there's usually a good conversation to be had with one of the regulars. There is ample seating indoors at high top tables and standard tables, plus there is outdoor (under a tent) seating post-COVID. The bartender (a tall gentleman whose name escapes me right now) is very nice, super accommodating and easy to talk to. He actually put me on to the fish tacos. If you drive too fast, you will miss it but I highly suggest not doing so. The food is good and they have specials that switch out weekly. They just went through a renovation recently as well. This is a town bar, small, great people, great food. The bartender was really nice and we had a great conversation when we picked up our to go order. Even enjoyed a drink while we were waiting. We stopped here for a drink and stood for a couple of hrs. That's how I describe this tavern. It's so lax time flies, food is ordered, more drinks and before you notice your at the jukebox playing music. No intention of leaving any time soon. I had a great time with great nachos. Great local bar to have a drink and food. It's a small place, but the vibe is friendly and the food is pretty good. Peej and I will order wings when we go there and even sometimes for takeout. It's convenient because it's so close. We love the location! You can also grab packaged goods at a fair price. Debbie is friendly to all the patrons and you always feel welcomed. We'll definitely be back and try more menu items. They also have trivia night every other Wednesday which makes for a nice respite for the middle of the week. read more

I really like the River Road Tavern's cheap beer, good food and friendly service. I worked for nearly a decade in the area and I'm pretty unhappy that I didn't find this place until the last year. The RRT is a great dive bar, a relatively small place with a few guys smoking outside the door, a bar that nearly fills the room, and every head turns to look at you when you walk in. Uh oh.. but no worries, everyone was friendly. This is definitely a place where the tradesmen hang out at the end of the day. It was nearly all guys, most in t-shirts and work boots. We were the ones a bit overdressed in khakis and collared shirts but they didn't hold it against us. Sometimes it was quiet, sometimes Credence played loud, just perfect for a low-key beer after work. A pitcher of Stella Artois was only $10.50! Plate of buffalo chicken fingers was just $5! Huge quesadilla plate was $7! The food took a while but was great, fresh and hot. We were told the cook makes the chicken fingers himself, not just bought from some supplier and they were excellent. The service was a tad slow because just one lady bartender was taking care of the whole place but she was very friendly. We're going back next week for wings and garlic bread! read more

Stopped in around 2pm after a small hike/walk at the Rutgers Ecological Preserve. Typical divey/neighborhoody bar with a friendly bartender and good bar food. We split the mozarella sticks and chicken cheese steak and both were really good. Ordered some Yuenglings and sat back to listen to the regular at the other end of the bar joke with the cook and talk to the bartender about his son's problems. Like I said, typical neighborhood/locals bar. Eventually at some point the bartender came back over to us and asked if we ever tried the new Not Your Father's root beer beer. They'd been waiting weeks to get it in and she was excited. She opened a bottle and gave us a taste and we loved it! She mentioned it would be good in a float and wanted to try it sometime, and that's when the light bulb went off. I sent husband across to the convenience store and he picked up vanilla ice cream, and the next thing we knew, there we were having root beer floats at the bar with the bartender. It was delicious! Tasted just like a root beer float. We left the remainder of the icecream pint and the root beers were on the house. Thanks! We'd stop in again if in the area again. I've been here a couple times for lunch. The place is a bit small and doesn't look like much from the road but I think that's part of the appeal. My kind of place. For such a small establishment the food is excellent. Lunch specials have been different every time I've visited, however, I have a hard time straying from the FatBoy Wings. You only get 8 but they're big and the favor is outstanding. I did get a burger once and it was one of the biggest burgers I've seen in a long time. This place is a great local spot for a drink and good food. Don't come here expecting 5 star dining, it's pleasantly just your local unpretentious pub. The place is small, there are a few tables in the back area but not many. The Tap beer selection was a great mix of craft beers and all the popular beers which is tough to find. My wife had the burger, which was wonderful and plentiful. The fries that came with her burger were amazing.I had he wings, they were huge and tastey. Enough spice to make them buffalo but not so much that you can't enjoy them. The wings were so big i couldn't finish my order by several wings. This little dive bar on the side of the road may not be much to look at, but it is a rough-around-the-edges gem of a place. Food: We ordered burgers, sandwiches, and wings, and they were all great. The fries and onion rings were also very good; in general, it's the paragon of comfort food. Only drawback is our drinks were a little flat, but nothing to really complain about. Atmosphere: It's a dive bar with fun music, and the best people. Kind of reminded me of Cheers where there are regulars where everybody knows your name, and super inviting towards newcomers. A good friend of mine had visited the River Road Tavern the previous week having nothing but good things to say. After catching a Rutgers lacrosse game, myself and a few others headed over. What. A. Place. Great atmosphere, friendly people, and the bartender couldn't have been any nicer. I went with the homemade Corned Beef sandwich, after the bartender had told me he made the Corned Beef himself. What a delicious meal that I had with a great tasting Guinness. My only only complaint is Bobby wasn't there, as a Syracuse fan, the fellow bar members told me he would've been rooting along the Orange with me as they took down Michigan State. Next time Bobby. I can't tell you how many times I had driven by this place before I actually stopped in. This is definitely a regulars type hangout - no question about it. My buddies and I were going to a Rutgers sporting event and we wanted to grab a couple beers and some food before we actually got there. Instead of dealing with downtown New Brunswick, we chose River Road Tavern. The place looked a lot like I would have imagined it to. The bar takes up the majority of the space and the lady bartending seemed to know the majority of the guys there drinking. Like I said before, definitely a regulars hangout. Sometimes when you go to these places, they aren't the most friendly but not this place. Everyone working there was very nice. We ordered some draft beers - beer was cold and tasted good. Can't ask for much more than that. I went with a grilled chicken sandwich with some fries and it was very good. I was actually pretty impressed, as I wasn't expecting much from the food. The sandwich tasted great. If I remember correctly, everything was very reasonably priced. If you are on your way to the RUT and looking to grab some food and drinks beforehand, give this place a shot. read more

I've decided to up the RRT a star after going a few more times--I've since been there later in the evening, with friends and alone, once after a Rutgers football game got out, and yes, it gets rowdy, in that middle-aged-crowd rowdy way. Fun, but I started to feel very much misplaced as the kid (comparatively) at the end of the bar! But the real reason I want to update my review is that their food has improved a great deal since I first went there a year ago, in some small ways, and a few big ones. For example, small way: krinkle fries are no more, now they have shoestring, and they seem fresher. But furthermore the cook is trying very hard to please, and doing a pretty good job of it, mixing up the menu, getting creative. I had a friend who didn't want fries; the bartender said "Let me talk to the cook," and came back to inform us that he was going to make a rice dish. Turned out to be rice with vegetables, well seasoned, a pleasant surprise for a place like this. Another time one of the regulars had been fishing and brought his catch over; the cook fried them up and passed them around the bar for free, to see how people liked it. I've had a lot of fried fish in my day and he did a very good job of it. Definitely becoming my preferred neighborhood spot, though I remain a bit younger than the average demographic. Finally, the drinks are inexpensive compared to places over in New Brunswick. If Yuengling is the standard not-light beer in this region, then here's the math: $3 a pint, and $1.50 during happy hour, compared with around $5 elsewhere. read more
