What a great find! I was traveling for work in E Lansing, and have a rule of visiting Small Town USA, mom & pop type of places for dinner when I can. I chose River House Grill this trip since it was a beautiful night, and on the water. While getting off the interstate and heading in to town, I noticed this eerie presence, nothing was open, signs were dark, stop lights not working... I got to River House and a few regulars were still milling around the bar, I was told they were closed due to a power outage throughout the entire city. After some conversation, they said if I had cash, I could still buy a beer (always carry cash!). The regulars moved on, and I was finishing my drink when the power comes back on! The owner Mike had already sent most of his staff home, as the estimated power restoration was well beyond their normal operating hours, but he said he would turn the fryers back on, and start the pizza oven since I was there. I told him he didn't have to and I would head back to East Lansing, but he insisted, at this point I was the only one in the place! Ordered a pizza, and boy was it delish! By the time my pizza had arrived, a few others had managed to come in and fill up the place! Thanks to Mike, Jen (bartender) and the staff who stayed! We met my mom here for a late lunch and I was pleasantly surprised! Our waitress was absolutely incredible, checking with the kitchen for allergy friendly items, bringing my kids applesauce and just generally being patient and helpful. There were a few TVs with different sports on which entertained my kids so I could talk to my mom! My mushroom Swiss burger was delightful and the sweet potato fries on the side were perfect. My kids enjoyed their cheese pizza and burger with fries. The place sits right on the river and we went for a lovely walk along the bridge after our meal. We're from metro Detroit, and was on the way home from a trip to Grand Rapids... stopped in and was puzzled on what menu item sounded good to me, bacon cheeseburger or loaded grilled cheese. The server is extremely nice and recommended all the right things. I went with the loaded grilled cheese and a side of fries, my man went with the salmon (the best fish he's ever ate at a bar). Recently my husband and I were in town visiting my mom and we decided to get some mushrooms on our way back home. I called the restaurant from just a couple of blocks away (my husband was driving) to place my order and they told me the mushrooms would be done in just a few minutes......and they were. Well.........they WERE done when I got there but the cook decided that they weren't perfect so he redid them. What a hidden gem in Mid Michigan! We found this awesome little place right at the head of two rivers! On the patio you get a fantastic view of the rivers, good music and the service was great! Short jog from the highway. Better than fast food, but not exactly fast. We showed up a little before the lunch rush and it was a little longer than expected for two sandwiches. The server admitted the kitchen forgot to start my jambalaya so that made it even longer. I had a cup of their homemade gumbo for a starter. Was ok, but not as thick as I would like. The jambalaya was ok as well (not much Cajun in these here parts), but it really lacked the shrimp and seafood aspect. For lunch, try should offer a lunch portion. 2017 update.... No longer Dukes, hasn't been in a coons age. Most everytime I visit I ask why I didn't go to the wheel or to the Mulliken roadhouse. Since the name change the service has not been welcoming, always a wait, and food is not worth the duckets. Beer selection is good, but most places are now days. We met friends here because it is near the middle between Williamston and Grand Rapids. What a surprise. When we walked in I knew it could be a nice surprise or a horrible experience. The place is not much to look at. It is a very simple bar & grill. The food is, however, is quite good. I had a pizza with garlic & olive oil base topped with ham, italian sausage and pepperoni. I was quite pleased with it. I am picky as far as pizza goes and this was solid. My wife had a cajun pasta dish that was quite tasty as well. My one knock was with the salad. The honey mustard dressing was essentially pure mustard. I like mustard, but it needs the balance of the honey to make it a suitable dressing. I was stunned to see the Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay on the wine list, and it was only $45. I have seen it for nearly twice that at some restaurants. read more

First, disregard old reviews, because this place changed hands a few months ago. The new owners are making some nice improvements, with more underway. Our service was very prompt and friendly, and all the staff were professional in appearance (during past visits when it was Duke's, this was not always the case). I tried the pulled pork sandwich, with a side of house-cut sweet potato fries. Nice soft bun, tasty pulled pork with a tomato-based sauce, and a generous serving of fries. I also tried my friend's jambalaya, which was traditional and delicious - just could have used a bit more rice or less broth. The food came out quickly and was piping hot - even the fries - which is important! The building is a bit run down, but that's part of the charm. It's clean and doesn't detract from the dining experience. I'm looking forward to dining on their river(s)front patio when the weather gets a bit warmer - it looks like they are putting in an outdoor fireplace, which should be a nice addition. read more

So, needless to say when the pizza arrived and I had a puzzled look on my face and I was asked what up and I said this does not look right. It looked like a large frozen Jeno's pizza with VERY SMALL diced onions and peppers. We had ordered the supreme with extra onions and peppers. First off, I take a slice and it is limp as can be, not cooked, uggg! Lastly, no meat! No nothing except onion and green peppers! LMAO!! I could not believe it. I had to go hunt the waitress down and explain to her our situation. She came to our table and she was looking at the menu to see what is on theSupreme. That is a bit odd as anyone who has had pizza or worked in a place that has pizza knows what is generally on the pizza. SHe looked at it looked at the menu and had to go back and have another pizza prepared. We also asked for the pizza to be well done so the middle was cooked. Needless to say, we got the pizza and literally, there was a sprinkling of sausage and pepperoni. Very hard to make out. It still looked like a cheap frozen pizza and it was not cooked as we had asked for. The middle was limp and not cooked thoroughly. We had enough and wanted to leave but again we had to hunt our waitress down to pay and go. Needless to say, this was a simple thin crust pizza that was undercooked twice, nothing like any pizza I have had anywhere in the world. Why not use big pieces of veggies and meat? Why such tiny bits of everything? This is what makes a pizza. Large pieces of veggies and meat along with a great sauce. Oh, and cooked thoroughly. They missed the mark not once but twice. Extremely disappointing meal. I could not recommend this place to anyone. read more
