Castle Lake Campground

I tried to find a listing for the actual Castle Lake but instead just found the campground. To be…read moreclear, the campground is a short distance prior to the actual lake which has its own parking lot and trailheads. Once parked at the lake, you can embark on the moderate trail to Heart Lake. Approaching the lake, the trail is to the left of it and climbs along the lake shore with intermittent views. As you take a gradual but steady climb up, you will start to see views open up and eventually see Mt Shasta itself. Most hikers stop at Heart Lake which is a scenic spot with granite on one side and on the outlet side of the lake for Shasta views. If you're wanting a little bit of a longer hike, when facing the lake, make a right and log hop across its outlet and follow a faint but obvious trail to a rocky outcropping. There you will reach an amazing vista of Castle Lake and Mt Shasta. It's a great spot to have your lunch and take some amazing photos. Take care on the way down as there are some steep drop offs and slippery rocks. Most of the trail is exposed, so I'd go earlier in the day in the warm months. Depending on how far you go, it's 3-4 miles out and back. Wonderful way to have amazing mountain scenery in a short hike. Free parking at the lake and pit toilets (not the best, not the worst I've seen.)

Trail was a steady incline for the most part and becomes very steep near the end. Furthermore, trail transitions from a wooded area to a rocky and exposed terrain. Stunning views of the nearby mountains and lakes at higher elevation! Heart Lake was actually referring to a small lake at the top. At the end of the hike, you get a heart shaped view of Castle Lake! Short video of the hike for those interested! https://youtu.be/Xc34KEsV1TE By the way, the address on Yelp is incorrect. Use AllTrails or Google.

You'll receive the warning of bears but have not seen one yet. Continue to practice prevention is highly recommended. Many things to do such as fishing, kayaking, swimming, and a 7 mile hike around the lake. Family oriented campground. To avoid crowds reserve between Sunday to Thursday. Tent or RV full/partial hook-ups are available. Campground is ridiculously large with so many sites available. Our stay was detoxing and an absolute glamping experience. The cabin is not for small kids or people who rub their hands along walls. None of the wood is finished or sanded so splinter heaven. It is dirty and stains around the walls. We loved staying a cabin here, we have always done tent sites before so even though the price is more than I think it should be for the condition of the place we still preferred a cabin over the campsites. It is a bit over priced in my opinion. A small bundle of wood was $15. The stay per night was $187 plus an extra $10 for our 11yr old and $5 for a dog so a total was $368-ish for two nights. They do charge for anyone over 10yrs to stay at the cabins even though the cabins say the hold 4-6people. They charge for more than two people.

This trip, bar none, was outstanding. Now, maybe it was the guide affect? Our guide Ben gave us far more then we anticipated. I had my 20 yo daughter with me and she had a blast. Ben created a fun and relaxed atmosphere void of any tight-ass guide power trips. A full day doesn't mean a full day of class III. The class III rapids are a blast but the stops at the N. Fork, the unreal waterfall hike, jump rock and plenty of swimming opportunities are an added bonus! Enjoy!

It was my daughter's 11th birthday, and I couldn't imagine having more fun doing something else. Our guide Glenn was awesome! He was fun and personable. He knew the river, kept us safe, and taught us what we needed to know. He brought lunch for us. He took us on a hike to a waterfall. He gave us opportunities to swim, jump off rocks and even taught my daughter how to steer the boat. We also got to witness a masterful backflip off the boat into the water by Glenn. Thanks Glenn for the EPIC trip and the great memories. If you don't use Trinity River Rafting as your guide, you're making a big mistake.

100% TRUE TO THEIR WORD In an era where reliance on the…read moreinternet to research a regularity nowadays, I know how some can be skeptical of what they see vs what is actually delivered. In this case, EVERYTHING promoted and promised on the website is what you get! Doug, Heidi, their family and entire staff do an amazing job to make you feel welcome and part of the Marble Mountain Ranch family. From the moment we arrived at the Ranch, we were met by Doug, who hopped on his ATV and led us to our cabin, gave us a tour and informed us about dinner that first night. I'll break the rest of this review up into parts to help you get an idea of how much fun MMR is as well as how everything they promise is delivered upon...all while trying not to spoil the surprise of how amazing being there is. BOOKING: It is a working ranch and know that it is normal to get their answering machine when you call. Leave a message if you don't get Doug or Heidi on the phone with your number and know they'll definitely call you back. Heidi is amazing and will answer any and all questions you have. Do make sure you have a "Plan B & C" as dates/weeks fill up rather quickly. Be sure to have your whole party size ready as well as Heidi does a great job making sure your whole party has adequate and appropriately comfortable accommodations for your party. ACCOMMODATIONS/LODGING: The cabins are beautiful and plenty spacious for all your party's needs. Every cabin is equipped with a window A/C unit that keeps everything plenty cool on hot days and a floor heater for those trips where the weather turns cooler. They are stocked it's pots, pans, dish and silverware, a full refrigerator/freezer and microwave. Bedrooms are perfect size for every guest as well. FOOD: Fresh cooked breakfast, lunch, and dinners are prepared by Heidi and her staff and provide you delicious meals that sufficiently fill you for the day ahead or to fill a hungry belly after a full day of activities. There's a variety of options for everyone - and at dinner time, there are wine and beer options as well. ACTIVITIES: You WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! Everyone, at every skill level will have an opportunity to experience everything. From your time in the arena learning how to guide, ride and get comfortable on a horse, to being on the trails taking in the forest and amazing views, to your time on the River going through the rapids, you are never disappointed. Doug and Heidi employ some of the most knowledgeable, kind, and engaging staff our group has ever met at a vacation getaway. Heidi makes sure you provide them, when booking, your skill levels to ensure everyone has a safe and amazing time. CONCLUSION: In the technological age where we're perennially connected to all things electronics, this was an amazing opportunity to unplug, get away from the hustle and bustle of busy life and enjoy nature in all its glory. We had two teenage girls in our party and they didn't miss being unable to scroll social media, or the internet all day long. By the end of each day you were physically spent and happy to have downtime with family and other ranch guests. Each night there were activities and opportunities to engage with and get to know Doug & Heidi, their family and staff. Our family came in with no expectations other than the excitement of a new and different opportunity at a getaway vacation. We were blown away at how amazing the experience was and we're already planning a return visit in the coming years. From our family to Doug, Heidi, their family and staff we say THANK YOU for an AMAZING experience that we will not soon forget! I hope this review helps continue to bring you great business and prosperity in the future...and we look forward to seeing you all again soon!

There is a depth and breadth of expertise and care in how it is run that makes this a very special experience. The horses are loved, well-trained and contented, the staff are all adorable, the food glorious. We were fully occupied from morning until night, coasting from one unforgettable and enriching experience to the next. The ranch itself is stunning, and set in a spectacular landscape. Each activity was of the highest quality and it felt enormously luxurious to be in such capable hands throughout. It was a stretch for us financially but absolutely some of the best money we have ever spent

First of all, he gave me his jacket when I said I was cold. Second of all, he made sure he got a snack for the group ( cookies! ), and made sure that he showed literally everything. He is the best tour guide ever. I recommend him to any group or family. He taught me how to drive the raft and he even asked me, I didn't ask! I would rate this 5 stars! He also made sure that he took us in a SAFAIRI JEEP!! It was amazing! I loved it so much! If you want to go to Shasta, this is on your bucket list! My wife floated down in the raft while I joined another group of kayakers following behind. This is a Class II trip, but with the big winter we just had the river is flowing fast and cold (51 degrees right now). Us kayakers wore wet suits and I was glad I did as I was "initiated " in the first rapid. I had trouble getting back in my raft so Libby and Joe helped me out. From there I mastered my technique to be sure I didn't head sideways into a rapid and stayed in my kayak the rest of the trip. It was a fun float on a beautiful river with top guides to match.
