To be…read moreclear, the campground is a short distance prior to the actual lake which has its own parking lot and trailheads. Once parked at the lake, you can embark on the moderate trail to Heart Lake. Approaching the lake, the trail is to the left of it and climbs along the lake shore with intermittent views. As you take a gradual but steady climb up, you will start to see views open up and eventually see Mt Shasta itself. Most hikers stop at Heart Lake which is a scenic spot with granite on one side and on the outlet side of the lake for Shasta views. If you're wanting a little bit of a longer hike, when facing the lake, make a right and log hop across its outlet and follow a faint but obvious trail to a rocky outcropping. There you will reach an amazing vista of Castle Lake and Mt Shasta. It's a great spot to have your lunch and take some amazing photos. Take care on the way down as there are some steep drop offs and slippery rocks. Most of the trail is exposed, so I'd go earlier in the day in the warm months. Depending on how far you go, it's 3-4 miles out and back. Wonderful way to have amazing mountain scenery in a short hike. Free parking at the lake and pit toilets (not the best, not the worst I've seen.)

Stunning views of the nearby mountains and lakes at higher elevation! Heart Lake was actually referring to a small lake at the top. At the end of the hike, you get a heart shaped view of Castle Lake! But our experience from the beginning to end was extraordinary. And in the beginning, we also called him like 100 times because we kept getting lost but he was patient and directed us back. Gave us advice to pick up snacks for the calm parts of the river - which we were thankful for 2 hours in to the 3 hour rental. Gave us safety guidelines that were also worth knowing about the river- we definitely would of panicked as there are several bends and just keep in mind the first 3 bridges come fast and then the last two take quite some time as we did sign up for the 6 hour tour. You'll receive the warning of bears but have not seen one yet. Continue to practice prevention is highly recommended. Many things to do such as fishing, kayaking, swimming, and a 7 mile hike around the lake. Family oriented campground. To avoid crowds reserve between Sunday to Thursday. Tent or RV full/partial hook-ups are available. Campground is ridiculously large with so many sites available. Our stay was detoxing and an absolute glamping experience. Grab a soft serve at their convenience store and a few rounds of beer next door.

The cabin is not for small kids or people who rub their hands along walls. None of the wood is finished or sanded so splinter heaven. It is dirty and stains around the walls. We loved staying a cabin here, we have always done tent sites before so even though the price is more than I think it should be for the condition of the place we still preferred a cabin over the campsites. It is a bit over priced in my opinion. A small bundle of wood was $15. The stay per night was $187 plus an extra $10 for our 11yr old and $5 for a dog so a total was $368-ish for two nights. They do charge for anyone over 10yrs to stay at the cabins even though the cabins say the hold 4-6people. They charge for more than two people.

My wife and I had a super fun trip on a full day trip down the French Creek section of the Trinity…read moreRiver. My wife floated down in the raft while I joined another group of kayakers following behind. This is a Class II trip, but with the big winter we just had the river is flowing fast and cold (51 degrees right now). Us kayakers wore wet suits and I was glad I did as I was "initiated " in the first rapid. I had trouble getting back in my raft so Libby and Joe helped me out. From there I mastered my technique to be sure I didn't head sideways into a rapid and stayed in my kayak the rest of the trip. It was a fun float on a beautiful river with top guides to match. My family and I have been renting jet skis around the globe for years, and not once did anyone perform a post-use inspection. I have no problem with them performing a post-use inspection, but if you are going to do that, you need to also do a pre-use inspection in front of us. We were on the lake, away from debris and the shore, yet she said the jet ski sucked up something and was damaged. We were charged an additional fee for parts and labor for repairs. The thing is, if you didn't perform a pre-use inspection in front of the customer, how do we know this isn't previous damage? Do they do this to all unsuspecting customers? Who knows. Lesson learned for next time.
