The best gelato, even the best frozen milk-based dessert I have ever had! We came here on our last night in Florence for an adult dinner of gelato and found everything we were looking for and more. I had the Crema Buontalenti, featuring delicate honey and lemon flavors. The husband chose Cremina Rivareno, with white chocolate, hazelnuts, and giandula swirl. Both were just heavenly. Unlike the places with the helot piled high (which means it has to be hard and somewhat crystallized), this gelato is kept in covered pots, probably the very same ones used to churn it. It is so creamy there is no way it could be stacked high. Also, there aren't 35 flavors to choose from, which is another sign of quality. The flavors offered are thoughtful and meant to highlight the natural flavors of the ingredients, masterfully combined for your enjoyment. I definitely recommend this place for gelato! read more

I have learned much in my short time in Firenze, but perhaps no more important or impactful than the following statement: If gelato is displayed as visible, turn and SPRINT away like Usain Bolt at the 2012 London Olympics or Tom Cruise in any Mission Impossible movie. Gelato should be served ONLY in a stainless-steel container that is completely covered, and with a metal spade as opposed to an ice cream scoop. This is exactly how Rivareno does things. The beautiful thing about this place is that it is not overrun with tourists yet, the cat is still in the bag. You have the rare opportunity to see a Leonardo that has yet to be attributed. I got the Stracciatella (obviously) and strawberry. An odd combo, I know, but I'm kind of an odd guy. The strawberry was the best fruit flavored gelato or ice cream I have ever had and the stracciatella was everything I wanted it to be and then some. Also, they have a cone cup. What an innovation. The best pistachio gelato I have ever had, and I've been to all over Italy (more than 10 cities) trying them. Also the best rendition using roasted pistachio paste. There are two types of pistachio gelato there, Salty and sweet (with bits of a caramelized toffee-like crunch) and regular. the salt and sweet while good, can't beat the classic IMHO. It is also sweet with a slight salt undertone, smooth, creamy and rich--even thought it just uses pistachios, brown sugar, and water. The owner was very nice and informative. My daughter and I stumbled into this place today. The first thing one notices from the street is the glowing counter that slowly changes color. On entering I first noted that, rather than artfully displaying the gelato in the window as with most places in town, the gelato was all under stainless steel lids. That got my attention. I was not surprised to get to Yelp tonight and find that others agree. It's a little away from the touristy parts of Florence. That's a feature, not a bug. Take the short walk. You'll be glad you did. UPDATE: We went back today. Daughter had (very dark) cioccalato and cinnamon. Yes, cinnamon gelato. Out of this world. I tried the New York, New York (maple syrup and toasted pecan): Smoother than Sinatra in his prime. And Limone, which is just intensely lemon. Found this place just by walking around without any direction on our first night in Florence. We have been 3 times now, and may go once more before we leave. This is the BEST gelato I have had in Rome or Florence, and I have sampled more then my fair share. It's even better than the one I liked best in Rome.
