While living in Florence this summer, this place was ranted and raved about for being the best Gelateria in all of Firenze. God help me, they weren't kidding. I used the occasion of a buddy visiting from Stuttgart to finally make the trek out to find this place, and boy was it worth it. I was literally salivating looking at the wide variety of fresh-made gelato. Literally. Salivating. My go-to gelato benchmark is nocciolo, but I couldn't help throwing an orange peel flavor in. I can't even describe it. This was the best frozen dessert I've ever had in my life.

I will not have ONE favourite gelateria in Firenze, I will have multiple favourites and I will trek to each corner of the city for their signature flavors. That's the conclusion I am coming to. Tonight, I decided to stop into Il Procopio because I pass it everyday, maybe two or three times a day and I have never once stopped. However, on the last couple of times I noticed something about an award from the city of Florence for their gelato... or something to that effect. I was worried that I was a bit too late, but at 8:30 p.m. they were still open, a customer sitting outside eating a popsicle. I went in and was greeted by the man behind the counter (very tall by the way... as I looked up from the gelato I was staring straight at his chest). I was taken by the flavor called "Il Procopio". Apparently it had won an award for being innovative. Of course I had to try it, not to mention it looks absolutely stunning with pistachios, candied orange peel, and almonds on top of a bed of creaminess. I ordered my usual piccola copetto (1,70) and started to get out money when the guy said, "But what flavor do you want?" I just went into gelato etiquette mode. So I told him that I wanted Il Procopio and then he asked if I just wanted one flavor or to mix. I said out loud, "That's a really good question!" He looked at me like I was crazy. So I went with one that had a name that didn't really describe the flavor, Don Raffae. From the case, it looked like a tan gelato with some chocolate drizzle and maybe some nuts on top... to be honest, I think it tasted a bit like coffee, but I was paying far more attention to the Il Procopio. There has to be a story behind Don Raffae, as I did a bit of Googling and discovered that it is a song... a politically charged song... maybe I need to go back and ask for more information about that flavor. However, the real reason I am giving Il Procopio five stars is for the Il Procopio flavour. It is an almond gelato with plenty of candied orange peel, pistachios, and almonds. It is absolutely heavenly. I don't usually like candied orange peel, but it worked really well with the almond gelato and really well with the salty bits of pistachio. And they aren't fooling around with just a couple of pieces on top, there is a surprise in every bite. If they could ship that to the states, I would be ordering lots of it. I actually think, in reviewing all of my favourite flavours from my favourite gelateria, that this flavour is now my new favourite. I don't know about the other flavours and although they certainly looked delicious, you really do have to try their signature flavor Il Procopio.

Only in Italy...Art on a cone!

Wow! You haven't had a true gelato until you've had one from this place. I learned today in our tour that gelato is made every day from fresh ingredients...and you can tell this place takes that seriously. The flavours of the ice cream go perfectly together and some flavours are not exactly what I would have thought would go together but they do! Our server was describing his gelato like it was art and was very helpful for us in deciding what to get. It definitely was art on a cone! This gelato will make your trip in Florence one to remember. A must stop if you're in the area!

Il Procopio provides an array of interesting flavors. I'm a fan of their award winning flavor with pistachios and orange peels as well as their cinnamon apple flavor. I would have never noticed this place if it not for my group of classmates that came in here. I'm glad we did come in here though because the flavors are just so special and the gelato was made perfectly. One more gelato spot to save on my list of amazing eats in Firenze! yummmm

This was the best gelato we had in Italy. I recommend trying it here at least once. You won't be disappointed.

From what I've seen, it tends to be more crowded in the afternoon than in the morning, and that matched my experience. The line looked long at first, but there are actually two lines you can join, so it moves more efficiently than it seems. From getting in line to receiving my affogato, the whole process took about 20 minutes. Most people grab their affogato and sit along the street to enjoy it before bringing their dishes back. It's a fun, casual atmosphere and well worth the wait if you're in the area.

We came to Florence on a cruise and probably one of the hotter days of this year. We showed up at Vivoli and clearly the Tik Tok went viral, because it was very crowded. We waited in line and it moved rather quickly. We debated on ordered the regular and the pistacchio, but decided to go with the regular affogato. Upon ordering and entering the establishment, it gave off the cutest old time coffee shop vibe. The staff was working diligently to process orders. We watched this well-oiled machine of a staff for several minutes while they passed out 10-15 affogatos within 30 seconds. We sat on the curb and enjoyed ours in the glass cups they gave us. This was a highlight for us. The creamy gelato with espresso on the spoon was perfect for a hot day. I hope this business continues to thrive and I look forward to recommending it to everyone I know heading to Florence.

To be transparent, one of the things that drew me to La Strega was the name, I wanted to see what was so witchy about this gelato - and of course the positive reviews helped. The gelateria itself was lovely - soft music playing with intricate decor and a good amount of space. There were a few chairs and stools in case you wanted to sit and enjoy, though they were a little awkwardly placed. There were several flavors of gelato as expected - instead of being on display they were in tubs covered in lids. I heard that's the "proper" way to store gelato as it remains fresher, though the jury is still out for me on that one. Anyway, I got the smallest cup size where I was able to choose two flavors - so I went with the cream and the chestnut. The gelato was really good - creamy with great flavor. Service was great, and overall this was a solid gelateria - La Strega is definitely worth stopping into when in Firenze.
